Hello everyone!
Disclaimer: I do not own Yu Yu Hakusho, it's characters or the references that I make. I do own my own characters and the plotline of the story.
Kimora is a character that I have spent a decade developing, she is one of my first OC's and one that has never left the recesses of my mind and memory. While usually I would have done this story in First Person, I have really loved writing in Third Person.
Please note that this is going to be a bit of a slow burn and slow update kind of story.
I do hope everyone who reads this enjoys it and I would have to hear back on what you think!
Chapter 1
Yusuke Urameshi couldn't help but fiddle with his phone, glancing at it occasionally to see if anything had changed on the screen. Each time it stayed dark, he became more fidgety and clenched his jaw before pursing his lips together before grabbing a beer and taking a sip. It was supposed to be his birthday celebration, but all the Spirit Detective wanted, was to see his sister. Usually they video called on their birthday, but she was late, and Yusuke was growing worried. It was unlike her to be late like this, and it was dragging the party on his part. Fiddling with his phone again, Yusuke frowned when he noticed it was still unchanged. A sigh escaped from him and he stared at his sister's number, his thumb hovering over the call button to talk with her.
"Still nothing Yusuke?" Keiko Yukimura, his fiancée asked softly as she took a seat next to him, her large brown eyes portraying her own worry as she rested a hand on his arm.
"Yeah…" Yusuke admitted, nodding his head as he looked over at her. "It's not like her to be so late… especially not today of all days…"
Keiko nodded her head and gave him a soft smile, squeezing his arm encouragingly. "She'll call, Yusuke, Kimmy always calls on this day." She assured him, knowing that his worry wouldn't leave him until he talked with his sister.
Coming into the living room in the middle of their conversation, Kurama looked at the engaged couple curiously, noticing how Yusuke hadn't been himself all evening since they arrived at Genkai's temple for his birthday gathering. For the past hour he noticed the odd obsession Yusuke had with his phone, and the way he fiddled and checked it. Usually his friend spent his birthdays with a grin on his face and joined in the childish banters that often came about with their group. Tonight, was different though, it seemed that his friend was almost frantic with whatever phone call he was waiting on.
Kurama knew almost everyone in Yusuke's life after everything they all had gone through over the years. There was very little that came to a surprise to him anymore, but something about this situation nagged at him. The name 'Kimmy' was not someone he recognized, and he couldn't recall the name being mentioned in conversation. Whoever this mystery person was, clearly meant a lot to the Spirit Detective, and even to Keiko as the woman kept assuring Yusuke that she was going to call.
Not wanting to bother the couple, Kurama noticed their other friend coming in to join them. Kazuma Kuwabara joined the trio with a lazy grin, though it slowly fell as he noticed the way Yusuke checked his phone with a sigh and a small sigh and shake of his head, as if he knew exactly what was going on.
"Still nothing?" He asked the two and frowned when the two shook their head. "Don't worry, she'll call, she always does, you know this." He assured his best friend, trying to cheer him up.
"Who is Yusuke waiting for?" Kurama couldn't help but ask softly, not wanting to be out of the loop of what was going on.
Kuwabara blinked for a moment before turning to him and set down the drink he had in his hand. There was a somber look on his face and Kurama almost withdrew his curious question, but there was a look in his friend's eyes that made him wait for a reply.
"He's waiting for a call from his twin," Kuwabara revealed as if it was common knowledge amongst everyone. "Since it's their birthday, they always video chat and catch up on life."
"Yusuke has a twin?" Kurama asked slowly, trying to process the news he was just given.
In all the years Kurama had been alive, this news caught him completely off-guard. He tried thinking back to every conversation he had with the group over the years, trying to remember if there was any mention of a sibling. His mind came to a blank though and he couldn't help but wonder if this was done intentionally. Kurama thought back to every interaction where Yusuke was more energetic than usual or when he was less enthusiastic than normal. He had to wonder if those coincided with talking or not talking with his twin now.
"Yes," Keiko decided to ease his confusion, knowing how inquisitive he could be when his interest was piqued. "Kimora, or Kimmy as we affectionately call her, is Yusuke's twin, she was taken from their home just after Yusuke's death…" Keiko's lowered her eyes as she looked over to her fiancé, who nodded and gave her hand a small squeeze.
"The authorities thought it was too dangerous for mom to keep Kimmy around after I died, so they shipped her off to another country." Yusuke spoke up, taking over the explaining, "We've been keeping touch through phone calls and video calls over the years, but we haven't seen each other in person in over ten years…"
"How come she hasn't moved back yet, surely it wouldn't be a problem now?" Kurama questioned, wondering why the two hadn't been reunited after they both became adults.
"She started a business where she is, and she told me that it's taking longer than she expected for her to get everything ready to move. Apparently, it's been quite popular, and she hasn't had time to get things ready." Yusuke shrugged, though Kurama could tell it bothered him more than his friend was willing to admit.
Before anymore could be said, Yusuke's phone began to ring just as a loud crash of thunder rumbled overhead. Yusuke jumped to his feet, a familiar grin spreading over his face as he readily answered the phone with a joyous tone.
"And here I thought you forgot!" he teased the person on the other end, before the caller could get in a word.
Instead of a scoff or being offended, loud, feminine laughter could be heard on the end of the phone. The laughter caused Yusuke's grin to grow even wider and the familiar twinkle in his eyes returned as the woman on the other end finally responded.
The rest of the group couldn't help but watch as Yusuke talked with his sister. He was more animated than he normally was as he spoke with his twin, and it was clear that Yusuke held her with great respect as did Keiko and Kuwabara. The two were listening animatedly as well, wanting to hear what the woman had been up to as they talked. It was a change that Kurama found endearing and became curious about what kind of person Yusuke's twin was like, and if she was anything like their friend.
"The detective finally talking with whoever he's been waiting for?" Hiei asked, appearing next to the redhead as they stared at the trio, listening as Keiko and Kuwabara interjected into the phone conversation.
"Yes, Yusuke's twin sister, Kimora." Kurama supplied, watching as his friend's ruby eyes blinked in surprise, the information clearly catching him off guard to.
"So… there's more dimwits?" Hiei asked dryly, scoffing and rolled his eyes before crossing his arms over his chest. "Makes sense with how cheerful they all are…"
Chuckling, Kurama couldn't deny that Hiei's opinion of the group hadn't fully changed over the years, but he knew that his friend had more respect for them than he ever let on. There wasn't much Kurama could say to him, and instead just took the moment to enjoy the energy that built up over the course of a few moments of simply chatting. It was noticeable change in the air of the room as Yusuke laughed along with his sister at something one of them said, it was clear that the two still had a positive and close relationship despite what happened to them when they were teens.
In mid-sentence, there was a knock at the temple doors, causing everyone to freeze as lightning flashed outside and the thunder crashed overhead. Yusuke stared at the direction of the door, frozen in place as he listened to the same storm rage on, over the phone with his twin. A lump began forming in his throat as he looked around the room, realizing that everyone was staring at him now as his twin called his name.
"Y-you said that you were having a storm too, right, sis?" Yusuke clarified, his mind moving a mile a minute, not wanting to get his hopes up.
"Yeah, it's pretty bad," Kimora chuckled softly through the rain, "I'm soaked to the bone right now, I really wished I brought a raincoat with me today."
The knocking continues and Genkai came out of the back room with Yukina, a small scowl on her face as she shot Yusuke a glare. Instead of responding to the glare, Yusuke merely waved her off, ignoring the intensified glare that the older psychic gave him.
"I'd hate to be you out there, or anyone who opens the door for you." Yusuke teased, poking fun at her predicament.
While he did feel bad for his twin, he knew she wouldn't take his words to heart, his twin was still a lot like him in the way she rolled with the punches. He could practically hear her eyes rolling at him as she scoffed at him.
"Yeah, well, if the person would just open the door for me, I'd be able to get a towel and hopefully dry off." Kimora responded dryly and a third round of knocking echoed through the temple and through the phone.
"Wait… what?" Yusuke sputtered as he looked over at the door and then looked at the phone in his hand. "No way…"
"Wait what, Yu?" Kimora asked him curiously, only to have the call get cut.
"Yusuke!?" Keiko called to her fiancé as the man stumbled off the couch in a rush and watched as he tripped over his own feet as he made his way to the main door.
Yusuke's mind was running a mile a minute as he slid towards the door, stopping short of crashing into it. He barely heard the others behind him, wanting to see what was going on, his heart was beating loudly in his ears and despite not wanting to be hopeful, Yusuke was desperate to see if his hopeful assumptions were true. Throwing open the door, Yusuke stared slack-jaw as he stared at the soaked figure standing in the rain with water dripping down her nose and black hair. Staring back at him with glittering amethyst eyes and a bright smile was the one person Yusuke had been waiting to see for almost half his life.
"K-Kimora?"
