"Darling time to wake up?" Adam kissed all over her face. He smiled watching her snuggle closer into his chest. "Oh I know. But we have work today. And then Eric will be here tonight. So we need to get moving." He saw her stretching out a bit but still hadn't opened her eyes. "How about I start the shower while you wake up more." He kissed her on the lips before moving from the bed. He heard her huff as he left. He just chuckled and continued to the bathroom to start the shower. After returning to their room he saw her sitting up yawning in all her naked glory. "This is all I ever dreamed of. And I wish I could show you how much but right now shower time." He watched her pout a bit before getting up to kiss him sound,y on the lips before heading to the shower. He patted her butt before throwing on some clothes and heading out to wake the kids.

He watched as Tiger ran into their room looking for Kim. "Bathroom little dude!" Adam chuckled watching him run into the bathroom looking for Kim. He loved the bond they had. He headed to Allie's room first knowing she was easier to get moving. "Hey sweetheart! Good morning!" He watched her dancing around trying to tie the back of her shirt. "Morning daddy Adam!" She ran over to get her hug. "How about I help you with your shirt?" He asked as he hugged her. "Yes please!" He placed her down gently then tied her shirt. He watched as she twirled around before heading out of her room to the bathroom. Adam laughed loving how happy Allie was. He moved to Riley's room next seeing his son still asleep. "Hey buddy. It's time to get up." He watched him stretch a bit before sitting up. He leaned into Adam's arms snuggling closer for a minute before moving out of bed. "Thank you buddy." He watched him head to the bathroom as Sallie was coming out. Adam headed into the bathroom with Riley to help out if needed.

"Alright let's get you changed and down for breakfast okay?" Adam asked as they e tied the bathroom. "Okay daddy!" He was awake enough now. Adam let him pick his outfit before getting him dressed and down the stairs. Adam moved right to the kitchen to start breakfast for the family. Allie was already cleaning out the litter box and feeding Tiger while Riley played. Kim came down dressed and ready for the day. "Morning babies!" Kim announced. "Morning mommy!" Both kids ran over for hugs. Adam plated breakfast for the family as they sat down to eat. The kids talked about what they were looking forward to later in the day. Once breakfast was finished Kim cleaned up the kitchen as Adam ran up to shower. Kim then made lunches for the kids while they played together in the living room. Tiger was playing with the kids as well. It was cute watching them play together.

Kim finished making lunches and joined the kids as Adam came down the stairs with Kim's badge and gun as well as his. "Alright kiddos let's get going!" Adam called out to the kids watching them get their coats and shoes on a they then headed to the garage. Kim was the last one out of the house making sure to grab the lunches on the way out. Adam took the kids to school and Kim headed right to work. They tended to take two cars because they never knew when Adam would be done with work. But Kim always had a set schedule so they took two cars so she could leave to get the kids on time daily. Kim waited in the parking lot till Adam arrived. They walked hand in hand till the entered the locker room. He gave her one last very long kiss before they went their separate ways. "Be safe darling! Behave my little nugget!" Adam kissed her belly before he left. "Be safe baby!" Kim smiled as he left. She headed to her desk to finish the work she started the day before.

Adam entered the bullpen noticing he was the last one. "Morning!" He dropped his stuff before heading for a coffee. "Morning! How was Kim last night?" Kevin asked. "She was great! We made plans for the wedding. Talked about going to visit my grandparents with the kids. She was happy all night. No nightmares. It was great." Adam knew everyone was concerned with the Upton issue the day before. "That's great! What wedding plans did you make?" Erin asked. "She decided she wanted to wait till after the baby is born. She doesn't want to look fat so we now can start actually planning. At first she wanted to get married right away so she wouldn't look like a whale. Her words not mine. But I think that was just the shock of being pregnant sooner than he had planned." He shrugged keeping the July wedding a secret. That hadn't specifically said not to tell anyone but he assumed since it was going to be just the 4 of them.

"That's great! And I agree the shock probably had her thinking all kinds of crazy things." Erin laughed remembering how crazy Kim was the last time. "Yeah the shock was definitely a thing. She couldn't even say the words. She had the test in the hoodie pouch. She looked stunned, surprised, confused, literally speechless. I thought something was wrong but she started to ramble about getting married right away. I told her I needed to know why, it was fine but I needed to know the why behind it. That's when she just handed me the test. Her hands shaking. I was pretty shocked too. But she never mentioned it after that. So I'm happy she finally made a decision." He was smiling wide thinking about that day. "Sounds about right. She was beyond shocked the first time. Though that time she cried for days." Jay laughed remembering that day. "Sounds appropriate given the circumstances." Adam laughed thinking about it. "Yup!" Erin laughed and heads back to her desk.

Adam pulled out his phone after feeling it vibrate. "Please don't tell anyone about the wedding please! Also I'm thinking a simple beach theme babies room? Good for either a girl or a boy. But since it's a boy I'm sure he would love it!" Kim texted as she started her day. He laughed loud as he walked to his desk. The team look at him curious. "Nothing crazy but Kim is convinced it's a boy. She won't hear anything else. It's kind of funny. I just hope she won't be too sad if it's a girl." The team laughed knowing how it worked. "Why is she so convinced?" Antonio asked. "Well she said it's a gut feeling. But she also thinks because she can only come up with a perfect boys name it has to be. Not sure I agree that's how it works but if it makes her happy then so be it." He smiled thinking about their little nugget.

"So what's this perfect boys name?" Jay asked. "She told me that it was going old school back to 2009. I was confused but then reminded me that when we met we both stayed on Christoper Drive. So she suggested Christoper Adams. It's perfect, it really is." Adam gushed over his life. "Sounds like a good idea since it's where you met but also reconnected and then got engaged and conceived a child. Makes perfect sense." Kevin nodded along. "Well this little one wouldn't be here without that beach so I agree completely. I can't wait to get back. It's the perfect getaway and Kim's place is perfect for all of us." Adam mused before seeing all the confused faces. "What? What did I say wrong?" He was confused as to the looks he was getting.

"What do you mean Kim's place?" Kevin asked. "Yeah Kim owns her condo there. She bought it with her settlement and then rents it out to help pay for it. She really made a great life for herself. I'm so proud of her! Even that first day together again I was so proud of her." He loved talking about his life with Kim. "We had no idea she owned that place. We just thought she rented the same place all the time. Wow that's really great." Kevin was shocked but Erin and Jay looked like they knew. "She said she got it when Allie was around 1 so they had a place to go to make memories. Build a life. It really is great. I wish the shower was larger but it's three bedrooms, two bathrooms. Full kitchen, deck with ocean views and a screened in porch. We spent lots of time in the porch talking, working through the past. Plus the kids can play in there without getting tons of bug bites. Or sunburn. It's just great." Adam really loved it there. "Sounds great. Might need to check it out sometime." Kevin mused as they headed out for a case.

The case was brutal and horrific. It was a hate crime. The first Adam had worked. It bothered him more than he thought possible. He knew getting justice was the only way to put this behind him. They all worked different angles of the case till they heard the gate opening. They saw it was Kim and knew she was there to grab some food from the fridge. Voight didn't care that she was there. She was family and should really be working in the unit. They did however stop working when they heard her gasp. "Kim? What's up?" Adam asked getting up to walk closer to her. "Kevin! How did you not see this?" She looked at him with fear in her eyes. "Kim what did I miss?" Kevin asked. "Look! He looks like that liquor store owner that was always nice to us. The one who always gave us that Cuban coffee." Kim pointed to the man in the photo. "Oh yeah. You are right, Mohammed. We will go check on him. Just don't stress about it." Kevin felt bad for not recognizing the man. "I'm going with you!" Kim was adamant about it.

"Kim I don't think that's a good idea. It could be unsafe." Voight stepped in knowing Adam would be freaking out right now. "Please? I just need to know that he's okay. He was always so good to us." Kim pleaded. "Look I understand your hormones are going nuts right now. And I can appreciate how you feel about this man. So how about I let you go but you have to stay with Ruzek and Atwater at all times. And as soon as you know he's okay you come right back here. We will not risk your life or the life of your child understood?" He was stern and harsh but she needed that. "Okay I promise." The trio headed out after that Kim was on edge. They knew it was the pregnancy but Adam saw her true love for the job and the people on her former beat.

As they arrived Kim was behind them being protected. "Officers what can I do for you today?" Mohammed asked. "You're okay!" Kim cried out from behind the guys. "Officer Burgess? Of course I'm okay. Are you okay?" He was worried seeing her in tears. "Yes we have a victim that looked so much like you I got scared that you were hurt. You've always been so good to us." Kim smiled as he pulled her in for a hug. "Oh sweetie. I'm fine! And so are you. Please don't let this diminish your glow." He rubbed her back. Adam watched smiling wide about how gentle the man was with his women. "Alright how about a coffee for the road for you gentlemen? You missy can't be drinking that type of coffee in your condition." He laughed as he started the coffee. Adam walked closer to hug Kim holding her tight. "You have a beautiful heart and soul my love." He whispered as he held her.

"Mohammed could you look at a photo of our victim? Maybe you know him?" Kevin asked. "Of course." He replied happy to help. "Okay it's a little brutal but here it is?" Kevin showed him the photo. "Um I don't know his name but he looks like a man who works at the bodega around the corner. Check there." He pointed in the direction the needed to go. "Thank you for the information, the coffee and for being so kind with my girl here." Adam offered a hand shake to the gentleman. He nodded as they shook hands and then the trio headed out again. "Let's get you back to the district. And then we can head out again." He kissed her head as he helped her in the car. They drove her back to the district walking Kim back into the district before heading back out again. "He's safe! He did give the guys an idea of where to look next so they dropped me off and headed back out again. He didn't know his name but where he worked." Kim shrugged grabbing her snack and headed back to her desk.

"Kim's invested in the beat you two worked together huh?" Adam asked still in awe of the scene in the liquor store. "You have no idea. We worked neighborhoods she shouldn't have been in but she always won them over. I remember one case where the white business owner called us in because a black woman stole a loaf of bread to feed her kids. Kim tried to calm the guy down and let the woman go but he wasn't having it. He threatened to call the real police. She went nuts going over his licenses and pointing out rat droppings till he agreed to let the woman leave with no charges. Kim paid for the woman's loaf of bread. She wanted the woman to be able to feed her children. Was damn proud of our girl that day. She was always smart, strong and not afraid to get her hands dirty. Even posing as a hooker for Intelligence once." Kevin explained as the rode towards the bodega.

"Were you partners with Kim when she took the buckshot?" Adam asked unsure who her partner was then. "Nope but Intelligence worked her case. Roman was her partner at the time. It was shortly after I got promoted. He was fighting with his ex girlfriend who they were working with. She went to the door alone. Rang the doorbell and took the shot. She fell straight back on the stoop hitting her head. She was lucky that's for sure. One of us never left her side." He watched Adam process the information. "I know I can't protect her all the time but I wish I could have prevented that one." Adam sighed. "No one could have prevented it. It was a horrible incident but she's good. She strong. No need to dwell on it." Kevin shrugged as they arrived at the location they had been given. "Let's do this!" Adam jumped out of the car headed into the bodega.

They talked to the staff but no one knew anything. It was obvious they were scared. Maybe if the police but definitely scared. They decided to head back to the district to look through immigration records to see if they could find a hit. They also wanted to see if they could find any other similar crimes reported. Everyone was working hard looking into the circumstances around this case. "So they were scared and didn't give us anything. Possibly illegal or they have been threatened. We are gonna look through immigration records to see if we get a match. Maybe similar crimes have been reported?" Adam knew it might be a long shot but it was something. "Hey it's a good idea. Anything is something at this point." Voight retreated to his office.

It was hours later before the team got a lead. The team headed out armed for a fight. They had no idea how armed this perp would be. Kim finished up her shift and headed out to get the boys from school. Allie was with her father so she just had to worry about Riley and Drew since the Halstead's would be working late. The kids played games while Kim cooked dinner. She had been worried about the case Adam was working but she tried to stay focused on the boys in front of her. She loved listening to the kids laughing as they played with Tiger. Tiger was enjoying all the extra attention he was receiving from the boys. "Boys dinner time!" Kim called out as the boys came running to the table. As the trio ate the kids talked about their days at school. Kim who normally didn't answer the phone during dinner answered since it didn't stop ringing. "Hello?" She didn't even look to see who was calling. "Kim! It's Erin. Adam was shot! Not fatally but he was shot. I'm on my way to your place to take care of the kids so you can head to the hospital." Erin rambled. "How bad?" Kim braced herself trying not to think the worse. "It didn't look bad. He was alert the whole time. Pissed off but alert. Didn't look like he would need surgery." Erin tried to stay calm but she was shaken for her friends. "Okay. I'm trying really hard to stay calm right now. Does he have his phone?" Kim asked. "I think so. Not 100% sure though." Erin had no idea as she went towards Kim's as the ambo went in the opposite direction.

"Okay I'm calling his phone now. See you soon." Kim hung up right away. "Darling! It's not that bad. It's a flesh wound. A few stitches and I will be fine. And home tonight. I promise I'm good." He didn't even wait to explain. "What the hell happened?" Kim was trying to stay calm. "Well you know it was a hate crime. Apparently it wasn't just Muslims. It was all races and religions. I took the bullet pushing Kevin out of the way. I had to protect your best friend. Kevin is fine and I took the bullet to my arm. It's being stitched as we speak. Please don't worry too much." He was in pain and it did scare him but it was for the right reason. "Erin just got here I'm headed to you! I will see you soon. I love you." Kim stated calmly. "I love you too." He knew she wouldn't be able to calm down till she saw him.

"I talked to him. He sounded good. Said he would be home tonight. Thank you for letting me know. I'm headed there now." Kim kissed Riley on the head as she ran out if the house. She tried to drive calmly but it was hard. Once she got there she ran inside to see the team waiting for her. "Hey! Have you seen him yet?" Kim asked. "No they won't let us see him till he finished getting stitched. "Oh I'm getting back there, just try and stop me!" Kim barged through the doors and noticed no one was stopping her. Maybe they knew she was a cop or his emergency contact but they just pointed to his room. She threw the door open and saw the shocked faces. "Darling! Come here. I'm okay. See all good!" She reached his bed and started to sob. The doctor continued to work knowing nothing could change the current situation. "Hey I'm good. Really. I'm barely hooked up to anything. They said I can go home tonight." He tried to assure her but he knew she needed to get it all out.

"Ms Burgess. He's going to be fine. I promise you. No working out for a bit but otherwise he's fine. A sling to keep him from ripping the stitches but he's okay. Try to relax for the baby." The doctor stated. Kim never saw him before but she just nodded. "Alright I'm finished here. Going to get you some supplies to keep it covered while you shower and then start your discharge papers. Also I will let your friends back to see you." The doctor left after that. "Hey look at me. We are okay. We are just fine. I love you, our kids and this nugget." Adam tried to stress how okay he was. "I love you too! I'm just scared! This was frightening for sure." Kim leaned in to kiss him passionately. "Come snuggle up with me." He moved a bit to allow her in the bed. As she rested next to him he felt her relax some. The room was filled with the team quickly.

"Dawg thank you for taking the bullet for me. I appreciate it more than I could say." Kevin came over to offer a hug. It was hard but they made it work. "You are my girls best friend, my friend and my children adore you. I would do it again. I also thought neither of us would get hit but I was wrong. But no worries. I'm good." Adam was humbled but really it was never a question in his mind. "What did the doctor say?" Voight asked. "He left to get my discharge paperwork. I'm good to leave. I can't work out with that arm at least. And they want me to wear a sling for a bit so I don't rip the stitches. I can't wait to leave though. Want to see my kids." Adam explained. "Great. We will let you guys rest for the night. See you guys Monday." Voight left as they all shook hands before they left as well. The couple was left to wait once more.

At home Erin was playing with the kids when Eric and Allie arrived. "Aunt Erin!" Allie yelled running towards her. "Hey sweetie! How was daddy time?" She tried to stay upbeat. "It was great! Where's mommy and daddy Adam?" Allie asked, Eric wanted to know the same. "Well daddy Adam had a small boo-boo so mommy went to the hospital to see him. Mommy already let me know they are going to be home tonight." Erin hoped it kept the kids relaxed. "Oh no! Where is the boo boo?" Allie asked. "Oh um his arm sweetie but it's not bad. He will be fine in no time." Erin hugged the little girl before getting up to head to the kitchen. Eric followed her. "How bad is it really?" He asked knowing the risk of the job. "It's really not that bad. Thank god. Stitches only, no surgery. He saved Kevin's life, pushing him out of the way on time. More worried about Kim with her being pregnant. Stress is bad for the baby." Erin explained as she grabbed water from the fridge.

"She just texted they are leaving the hospital now." Erin showed him the text. Relief washing over them. "Alright let's get home baby!" Kim led him to the car and bit more gently than was necessary but it had really scared her and this helped her to feel in control. "I'm ready to see the kids then snuggle with you." He stopped walking pulling in for a long passionate kiss. "Tonight I want a bath with you to relax and then I want to make love you over and over again." His words made her weak in the knees. "Sounds like a rough job. But if I must." Kim giggled leaned in to kiss him again. "Let's go." He was ready to get home. He was over today and wanted to move on. It was getting close to bed time when the couple walked through the door. "Daddy!" Both kids screamed as they ran for him. He knelt down to the floor to receive hugs from his kids. Eric and Erin watching from the living room. Kim standing behind him. "Okay kiddos so daddy has a boo boo but I just need to be careful for a few weeks. But nothing is going to change okay?" Both kids nodded and Allie headed back to the living room while Ry wanted to be held. Adam picked up placing him on his good side carrying him further into the house.

"Glad to see you're okay Ruzek." Erin leaned in to hug him. "Thanks Linds! And thanks for being here so Kim could come to the hospital. I'm sure that wasn't great for you." He had seen the fear in her eyes. "Not great but you were talking and coherent so I felt better about it. I'm gonna take Drew and head out now. If you guys need anything just call." Erin hugged everyone before heading out with Drew. Adam headed to the couch to relax with the kids for a few. He had seen Eric but really wasn't sure how to act knowing he was unhappy about the baby. "Babe I'm gonna reheat some dinner for you. You can't take the pain meds on an empty stomach." Kim headed straight for the kitchen not waiting for a response. She did notice Eric heading into the living room to play with Allie a bit more before he had to put her to bed.

The small family continued to play while Adam ate his dinner and took his meds. He knew the risks with them but he also wanted to spend time with Kim and not be in pain so he figured one or two couldn't hurt too much. And tomorrow he could switch to something less addictive. Once it was bedtime the adults all took the kids to bed. Reading them stories, getting them dressed and in the bathroom before falling asleep soundly for the night. Neither kid put up much of a fight. They were exhausted from playing with Drew. The adults headed back downstairs for a bit before Eric left for the night. "So are we not going to talk about the fact that you got shot today?" Eric asked confused as to why it wasn't mentioned. "The kids don't need to know. Saying boo boo works fine for them. No point stressing them out over something that wasn't that bad. Trust me it's better this way." Adam leaned back a bit on the couch closing his eyes.

"Do you guys want me to take Allie for the weekend? I don't mind." Eric offered looking between the couple. "If she wants to go that's fine. We were just going to be packing for the move next week anyway so not a big deal either way." Kim wasn't sure Allie would want to go. She hadn't been to her father's since the whole birthday debacle. He had taken her for the weekend but they usual went to Florida or Texas where he got work done with her in tow." Kim hated it but at least he was trying to be a better dad. "Alright I'm gonna get a hotel for the night and ask her in the morning. It wouldn't be a long trip but it's something. And I already know if she doesn't want to see my parents she doesn't have to. It's been better over the phone but I know she's still uneasy and I won't force her. So I will see you both in the morning." He left after that leaving a very tired couple alone.

"Ready for bath time?" Kim asked knowing he would be up for it. "Absolutely." He followed her up the stairs with the medical supplies to cover his arm. Kim stripped him of the hospital issued shirt and his jeans and boxers before stripping herself. She started the water making sure it was warm enough for them both. She then took his arm in her hands studying the stitches and the red, angry skin around them. She placed kisses around the wound before covering it with the patch to keep it dry. He got in first like always before helping her in . They settled against each other, his arms wrapped around her body. He sighed as he relaxed. "Thank you for showing such love and strength today. I know it wasn't easy. But I appreciate that front you put up with the kids and in the hospital." He knew she was holding it together but he was waiting for her to let it out. "I was scared, not gonna lie. But Erin saying you were talking and that it didn't look like surgery would be required calmed me down some. I also had everyone reminding me stress is bad for the baby. I think I scared Voight though. He said no one was allowed to see you and I told him I didn't care and barged in like a bull in a china shop. The nurses looked scared. Now it's funny, then not so much." Kim shrugged before turning in his arms.

"I just want to feel her heart beat and hear your heart beat. It calms me." He allowed her to adjust to lay with her ear on his chest. It wasn't the most comfortable but he knew she needed it to prove he was really okay. Neither moved from that spot. Staying in that exact spot till the water ran cool. Kim got out first before helping Adam out. They dried off before heading to bed. "We don't have to if you are in pain." Kim wanted him to know he could back out if he wasn't feeling up for it. "Nope. Just need to make sure I'm in a position that doesn't put pressure on my arm. Which I think actually works best tonight." He wrapped his arms around before he continued talking. "We can feel every ragged breath, feel every clenched muscle, feel every spasm, every chill, feel every vibration before we hear it. We both need that tonight." He felt her body reacting to his words. They broke apart laying in bed to get in the proper position that would work best. Her chest pressed against his, her leg wrapped over his waist. They loved this position.

Neither took long before falling over edge together. And neither were surprised by the combined tears shed. It had been a scary day for sure and both needed to release those pent up emotions. "Mind blowing my darling!" He whispered his breaths still ragged. "Agree completely. Don't want to move from this position. Too comfy." She kissed his neck lightly closing her eyes while trying to calm her breathing and racing heart. "We don't have to. Maybe just your leg and we shouldn't sleep with me inside you." He replied knowing she wouldn't be happy about it but it was best. "Wash up quick then back here to sleep wrapped up together." She suggested though not wanting to move. "Yeah it would be smart. Plus we need to brush our teeth and pee before falling asleep. So let's do it." He helped her up if only because he was afraid her leg would be numb from being over his hip so long. They washed up very quickly and did their nightly routine before heading back to bed.

They laid back in the same position where they both safe and comfortable. Kim falling asleep first exhausted from all the emotions of the day. Adam not far behind her. Thankfully the couple slept soundly through the night. Neither having a nightmare. Which was more surprising for Kim than Adam. But it just reinforced that they were stronger together than apart. No one knew what the next morning would bring for now they were happy, content and safe together.
