(Mariska couldn't find Chris anywhere inside the clinic so she tried the only other place he might be. Taking the fire exit up to the rooftop she finds him looking out leaning against the railing.)
Mariska: Hey.
Chris: (looks over) Hey.
Mariska: What are you doing?
Chris: This is where I come to clear my head.
Mariska: Mmm, well it seems theirs a few rumors going around.
Chris: What?
(She moves next to him and leans over the railing.)
Mariska: Well apparently, I'm dating Sean but I'm also sleeping with you. On top of that, I'm the reason your relationship with Rachel hit rock bottom.
Chris: Who said this?
Mariska: It doesn't matter, I know the truth.
Chris: But it's not right.
Mariska: Hey I have three months left before I can go back home. What someone is saying about me isn't going to stop me from doing what I love.
Chris: (smirks) I like that.
Mariska: Now what's going on with you?
Chris: It's nothing just looking at life differently now.
Mariska: (looks at him) I get that but if you need someone to talk to I'm a great listener.
Chris: (smiles) Thanks, I appreciate it.
Mariska: Anytime.
(He straightened up before fixing his scrub jacket.)
Chris: Well I must get back.
Mariska: Yeah me too before more rumors start to spread.
(She waits a few minutes after he leaves to follow so no one sees them. She meets him in a room where he is checking on a patient. It was a two-year-old who was suffering from an upper respiratory infection. She was an orphan who was brought in by the shelter she stayed at. The little girl was screaming to the top of her lungs backed in a corner.)
Chris: Come on sweetie, no one's going to hurt you.
Sean: Hey Mariska you think you could calm her?
Mariska: I can try.
Sean: Please, I'm not good with children and she's been at it for two hours. She bit one nurse who tried to put an IV in her arm. She's severely dehydrated and she barely ate in the last two days.
Chris: It's worse when they send kids here with no kind of medical history. She's only three and hasn't been to a doctor since she was one. I swear these children's shelters are the worst but they expect of to do our jobs.
Mariska: (walks towards them) Hey give me some time alone with her.
Chris: You sure?
Mariska: Yeah.
Sean: Hey if you can get her to calm down and get an IV, you will have to let me take you out this Saturday.
Mariska: (smiles) OK, can you guys give me a few moments?
Chris: Sure.
(Chris and Sean leave out the room as Mariska slowly walks up to the scared toddler. She kneel down as the little girl moves farther away in the corner.)
Mariska: Hi sweetheart. My name is Mariska, what's your name?
Sidney: Sidney.
Mariska: Sidney is a pretty name. I'm not going to hurt you sweetie you want to come out so I can check out that cut to your head?
Sidney: No, no touch.
Mariska: OK, are you hungry? I have some chocolate candy in my pocket.
(Mariska takes the candy out and holds it in her palm before placing it on the floor in front of the child. Sidney hesitated for a second before she reached a hand out grabbing the wrapped candy. Mariska smiles as she watches the little girl open the candy and eat it.)
Sidney: Good.
Mariska: It is, it's my favorite.
(She watches as Sidney slowly makes her way out the corner and stands in front of her.)
Sidney: More, please.
Mariska: (smile) OK, here.
(She takes out two more and places them in her little hand. She smiles at Mariska before she surprises her and sits in her lap.)
Sidney: I got cut.
Mariska: Oh yeah, how?
Sidney: The mean lady mad I pee myself.
Mariska: Oh sweetie, does she hurt you a lot?
Sidney: Yes, she doesn't feed me if I'm bad.
(Mariska has to bite her lip as she looks up at Chris outside the door.)
Mariska: Are you hungry now, I can get you anything you want.
Sidney: I like pizza.
Mariska: Then pizza it is. Now can I take a look at your cut and make it better?
Sidney: Uh huh, can I stay here with you?
Mariska: I don't know bunny.
Sidney: You are nice and have good candy.
(Mariska laughs at this as she slowly stands with the child in her arms.)
Mariska: Sidney will it be ok if my friend Chris comes in and helps me?
Sidney: Dr. Meloni I like him. I don't like Dr. Hayes.
(Chris laughs at this while Sean shakes his head.)
Mariska: Ok Dr. Meloni only.
Sidney: He gives good hugs and he has good candy too.
Mariska: I'm sure he does baby.
(Chris walks in and stands next to them as Sidney continues to talk. She sits there as Chris and Mariska tend to the cut on her forehead.)
Chris: Your really good with her. She usually don't take to new people this fast. It took me months to gain her trust.
Mariska: (smiles) Well what can I say, I'm good like that.
(He chuckles as they finish checking Sidney over so she can get the IV for the medication she needs. Mariska was able to find a vein and got her comfortable by fluffing pillows around the little girl.)
Sidney: Miss Marisha, can you stay?
Mariska: I don't think so sweetie. I still have a few more patients to see but maybe I can come and check on you.
Sidney: (pouts) I don't like to be alone.
Mariska: How about I come back in an hour and maybe if we ask Dr. Meloni nicely he would let me stay.
Sidney: OK, promise?
Mariska: Promise.
(Mariska kisses her forehead before she leaves the room to go help Chris tend to the other kids. An hour had passed when they walked into the break room to take a breather. By noon she was sitting with Sidney reading her book as she while she ate lunch. Ten minutes later the little girl was fast asleep tucked under the blanket with her stuffed elephant.)
