Chapter 1: One Mission at a Time
Sarah puts her arms around Chuck and whispers in his ear. "Chuck, give me your watch."
Chuck gives her a puzzled look. "Why?"
"Because it's all a lie. They're going to move you underground. Casey is waiting at Castle to take you into custody. We have to run."
Chuck takes off his watch and using Sarah's body to hide it from the camera passes it to her. She takes it. Taking his hand she leads him to the door, a blind spot for the camera.
Casey sees them head for the parking lot and stands at the foot of the stairs leading from the yogurt shop. He trains the tranq gun up at the landing.
A man walks into the Buy More, and Sarah bumps him. She smiles. "I'm sorry sir. Let me make it up to you. That yogurt shop is giving away free pints, but only for the next fifteen minutes."
He smiles. "Thanks miss, my kids love that stuff." He turns and walks towards Orange, Orange.
Sarah grabs Chuck's hand and pulls him. "Come on Chuck, we need to move." As she runs towards the parking lot, she pushes the button on a key fob. Hearing a horn blast she heads towards it. "Come on Chuck that's our ride."
Reaching the car she pushes another button. The doors unlock and the horn stops sounding. "Get in Chuck, move. We don't have a lot of time."
Sarah starts the car and moves it out into traffic. "Chuck, we need to mask this car quickly. Any chance you have some kind of screwdriver on you?"
Chuck nods, "I have my Swiss Army knife."
"Good get it out. We'll need to move quickly. Sarah drives off the main road and gets into the quieter part of town. "Chuck keep your eyes open. We need another car, similar to this one."
"Sarah what are you talking about? Are you going to steal a car?"
"Chuck how do you think we got this one? I lifted the keys when I dropped the watch in that guy's pocket. For now we just need one you can switch plates with."
Chuck is distraught, "Sarah, what are you doing?"
Sarah sighs. "I'm saving you Chuck, so we can save your father. Are you going to fight me or help me?"
Sarah turns onto a quiet street, the houses spread out. A small park is empty leaving no prying eyes on the street side. Pulling over Chuck gets out and staying low he moves behind a car similar to the one they stole. Sitting on the street behind a tree he starts to remove the plates from the car. While he does that. Sarah pops the trunk of the car they're in and roots around to see what she can find. Chuck finishes switching the plates front and back and climbs back into the car. Sarah is wearing a cap, her hair tucked up into it. She hands him a cap. "Here put this on. Keep your face down. We don't want to get picked up by the traffic cams."
Sarah pulls out staying to the back streets. "Okay one more stop and then we're in the wind." Sarah pulls onto a dirt road that leads into a small woods. "Come on Chuck, you can help. We have to get in there before we lose the light." She's moving quickly.
Chuck smiles as he works to keep up with her. "Not to worry Sarah, my cell phone has a light in it."
Sarah stops abruptly. "WHAT? Are you kidding me? Give me that damn phone."
Chuck feels like he's done something wrong. Sarah takes the phone and angrily smashes it against a rock until it cracks open. She pushes around the parts until she finds the sim card. She hits it with a second rock, splintering it. Then she pulls the battery out. She digs a small hole with her hands and buries the remains. Then covers up any trace up with leaves. "Damn, now we really need to move. We just lost our head start."
She turns and runs into the trees, "This way, follow me." She looks around until she spots something and moves in a deliberate way. Getting to a tree she gets on her knees and starts to dig at its roots. "Don't just stand there, help me."
Chuck gets down on his knees. "Sarah, what are we doing? Why did you smash my phone?"
They're both digging with their hands as she answers. "Chuck, The moment that guy walked into Orange, Orange Casey started the process to track our phones. I dropped mine under the wheels as we drove away. I should have asked for yours. This improvising thing is more Carina's style than mine.
We switched plates because people don't notice when their plates have been switched. They'll be looking for the plates from the car we're in. The owner of the second car won't report his plates stolen. That buys us some time until we can find another car. As to what we're doing now." Sarah smiles. "We're looking for this." She pulls up a small duffel bag wrapped in plastic. "It's my go bag. It has IDs, money, and weapons in case I have to disappear in an emergency. If we ever get out of this, remind me to help you make one for you."
Chuck stares, amazed at what's happening. "Sarah, I'm scared."
She smiles. "I know. Trust me so am I. Right now we need to move. Help me fill in this hole and cover it. We can talk later." They move quickly back to the car and drive away from the area.
Chuck sits in the passenger seat staring straight ahead. He's afraid to look at Sarah. He knows they're in trouble and what she's doing for him. It terrifies him, his thoughts reflect it. How can I ask her to do this, give up the life she loves, risk everything for me? I can't let her do it.
Finally, he turns to look at her. "Sarah, turn around."
Sarah turns and looks at him, "What? Why? Is someone behind us?"
Chuck shakes his head. "No, I mean turn the car around."
"Why would I do that? They want to throw you in a cell for the rest of your life. Roark has your father and… never mind. I'm not going to let them do that to you. "
Chuck is adamant, "Sarah you're committing treason. You could wind up in prison for the rest of your life."
Softly Sarah responds, "I know."
Chuck demands, "Sarah turn around, I won't let you do this. It's bad enough they want to lock me up. I can't let you throw away your freedom, your life. You're too important to me."
Sarah smiles as she says, "Shut up Bartowski. Keep your lady feelings to yourself."
Chuck turns back to the front and watches the road disappear under the car. "Sarah what about Casey?"
Sarah takes a deep breath, "What about him? He was fine with following the orders to lie to you and bring you in. In his words he was glad 'operation moron' was ending. That's why Beckman sent me. They knew you would trust me. That I could lie to you, and you would believe me. I couldn't do it. You're important to me too."
Chuck's face shows his sadness at Sarah's words. Suddenly, he looks at Sarah and exclaims adamantly, "No, Casey is part of the team, our partner. We need to give him the chance to make a choice. Where were you when he agreed?"
Sarah shakes her head, "We were in Castle. What does that have to do with it?"
Chuck gets excited, "It has everything to do with it. When you walked into Buy More were you sure about what you would do?"
Sarah shakes her head, "I wasn't sure until you told me you trust me. I knew I didn't want to lie to you, but I was under orders. When you said you trusted me, I couldn't do it. I couldn't betray you."
Chuck is bouncing in his seat, "Exactly, you were in front of Beckman. You were given orders. You needed a moment to decide what you wanted to do. Casey has had some time. Let me call him."
Sarah shakes her head, "Chuck that's crazy. You'll be putting both of us at risk. Not to mention we won't be able to save your dad if we're locked up." Sarah shakes her head again. "Chuck this is crazy." She sighs, "But your instincts have always been good up till now. What do we have to lose. At least they'll give us three meals a day and a warm place to sleep. Being on the run is no fun. Fine we'll call him. But we do it my way."
Sarah continues to drive until she hits a truckers stop near a highway interchange. Pulling in she tells Chuck, "Stay in the car, keep your head down. They can access cameras anywhere." Stepping out of the car she makes sure her face is hidden from the camera. She walks into the store and pays cash to fill the tank. She also buys two burner phones and some sandwiches and drinks.
Returning to the car she opens one of the phones and sets it up for use. "Chuck, are you sure about this?"
Chuck nods. Sarah shows him the phone, "This is exactly what you say and do." She gives him specific instructions. Taking a deep breath and saying a silent prayer she dials Casey's private number and puts it on speaker. She waits nervously as the phone rings. "Remember we need to keep him on the phone for at least a minute."
On the third ring, "Casey, who's this?"
Chuck takes a deep breath. He coughs and remains quiet.
"Bartowski is that you. You're in a lot of trouble nerd."
Sarah taps her watch and gives Chuck a thumbs up."
"Fifteen seconds Casey. Team Bartowski, in or out?"
Casey doesn't hesitate "In." Sarah smiles and gives him the okay sign.
Chuck smiles, "I'll be in touch." He hangs up and Sarah turns the phone off.
"Okay, that gave him enough time to track the phone." Getting out of the car she starts to fill the car slowly as she strikes up a conversation with the trucker filling up next to her. "Nice rig, where are you heading?"
The trucker is clearly taken by this beautiful woman chatting him up. "Heading towards New York, Ma'am. How about yourself?"
Sarah gives him a big smile, "Bummer, I was hoping we were heading in the same direction. I'm heading to Seattle. Oh well, drive safe."
Sarah pulls out the burner, turns it on and slips it into a hole in the truck next to her. She finishes filling the car with gas, smiles, and waves at the trucker. Climbing back into the car she points it north.
Sarah finally takes a big breath. "Okay Chuck, Casey says he's in. That doesn't mean he is. I made sure he doesn't know where we're headed, but I'm still concerned. Chuck, John is a soldier, a Marine, he follows orders. He's… not as invested in you as I am."
Chuck smiles, "Casey is our partner, our friend. I need to take the risk alone. I'll meet with him. You stay in the car, hidden. If he takes me in you need to be free, to save me later."
Sarah stares at the road ahead of her. Chuck doesn't see the tears in her eyes. "Okay, that makes sense. I don't like it, but it makes sense. However, I want to take the night to think it over. If we still decide to do it, we'll call him in the morning."
The rest of the drive is pretty quiet. Suddenly Chuck gets excited and exclaims, "Sarah look it's a Road Runner." He points at a long-legged bird running along the side of the road.
Sarah shrugs, "Okay it's a bird, so what?"
Chuck laughs and bounces in his seat, "You don't know who the Road Runner is, meep, meep? Please tell me you know who Wile E. Coyote is."
Sarah shakes her head and laughs at Chuck's excitement, "What the hell are you talking about?"
Chuck stares out the window taking in the stark surroundings. Nothing but cactus and sand as far as the eye can see. Then that little bird shows up and changes everything. Chuck's thoughts take him over, I was ready to give in. I figured there was no way that this was going to work out okay. My only thought was how do I get Sarah out of this when I go down. Then that bird shows up. That dumb coyote never gives up. He strives and strives and strives, and he doesn't even have Sarah Walker on his side."
Chuck turns back to look at Sarah. "Sarah Walker, you're the best thing to ever happen to me. We're going to make it work. We're going to rescue my dad and get out of this, or my name isn't Chuck "Wile E. Coyote" Bartowski."
Sarah laughs hard, "What the HELL are you talking about?"
Chuck laughs like a little boy, tickled with himself. "Wile E. Coyote is this cartoon character that chases a Road Runner because he's starving. He comes up with all these silly schemes. They include, skates, rockets, bombs, and the Acme Company that ships things to the middle of the desert. The Road Runner outsmarts him every time. The coyote winds up falling down cliffs, getting run over by trucks and trains, and being blown up."
Sarah laughs at Chuck's exuberance, "That sounds ridiculous. Why you are so excited about a cartoon?"
Chuck bounces up and down in his seat rocking the car, "Because I'm Wile E. Coyote, and I keep doing ridiculous things. And they always work. Do you want to know why it's different. Do you know why he always fails, and I don't?"
Sarah shakes her head and laughs, "I'm afraid to ask. Sure go ahead, educate me."
Chuck sits back against the window to get a good look at Sarah, "He fails because he doesn't have Sarah Walker. I won't fail because I do. You're the best. Best friend a guy could have. Beauty, brains and guts all wrapped up in one package and my partner."
Sarah takes a deep breath and sighs, "Best friend, partner, huh? You're sure there's nothing else I can do for you?"
Chuck sits back calmed by Sarah's question. He once again turns his attention to the cactus and sand rolling by. A few minutes pass and he talks to the window, "Sarah, you said you don't want to hear my lady feelings."
Sarah is glad he's not looking at her. "Yeah, I guess I did say that. Perhaps that's for the best. Yeah, maybe so. Chuck, you're my best friend too."
Sarah is pensive for the rest of the drive. She pulls over to the side of the road. "Chuck get in the backseat and lie down on the floor." Chuck looks at her like she's crazy. "I'm going to pull into that motel up ahead. They're looking for a couple, not a single women. Please stop fighting me. I know what I'm doing." Chuck nods and climbs over the seat to do as he's told.
She pulls into the motel. It's far away from civilization. The only movement in the darkness is a few tumble weeds lit by the strobing neon sign. "Chuck stay in the car and stay down." Chuck groans. "Chuck, I mean it. I'll just be a few minutes I'm going to get us a room. Unless you would rather sleep with your bird friend and the snakes."
Chuck nods, "I'll be good."
Sarah walks into the motel office. She looks around. Spotting the camera she's careful to keep her face away from its view. An older man walks out of an opening behind the counter. It's clear he's spent his share of time in the sun. The leathery look of his skin attests to it. His eyes are bloodshot, and the smell of alcohol and sweat wafts off of him assaulting her sense of smell. "Evenin' Ma'am. How can I help you?"
"Hi, I'd like a room, something away from the road noise if possible."
"No problem, I can give you number 16, it's in the back. It's 25 a night, in advance. I don't take none of them fancy electronic money things."
"Sounds good. She puts a twenty on the counter, then adds a ten. Make sure I have privacy, and you can keep the change. There's another twenty if you never saw me." Sarah puts another twenty on the pile. The man nods, grabs the money and puts a key on the counter. He walks back into the opening and Sarah is alone.
When Sarah climbs back into the car Chuck is relieved. "Hi Sarah, nice to see you."
Sarah shakes her head and smiles. "Yeah, nice to see you to. Stay down until I'm sure we're clear of cameras. Time to get some sleep. We're going to need it. We have some rough times ahead of us."
Sarah drives around to the back of the building. Looking around she ensures there are no cameras. "Okay Chuck, let's go." They enter the room. It's barely tolerable. Dirty, dusty and the smell of stale booze and urine is overpowering. The screen on the TV is cracked. Chuck is sarcastic, "Are you sure this is better than that cell? There's only one bed, maybe I should get a separate room."
Sarah is hesitant, "No Chuck, I'm not sure it's better. But it's what we have. No separate room. Remember I'm here alone. As long as we're on the lam I need to keep my eye on you. I'm going to grab a shower.
"Right behind you, don't want you to lose sight of me."
"That's fine Mr. Bartowski, I'll trust that you'll stay safe and not leave the room.'
Chuck shrugs disappointed as Sarah heads to the bathroom. He climbs into bed. when Sarah comes out of the bathroom in her underwear. He's aroused but keeps it to himself, "I can sleep on the floor."
Sarah climbs into bed and pulls the cover over herself, "No that's alright. You don't need to do that."
They lie quietly for a moment, "Sarah why are you doing this?"
She responds knowing what he means but ignoring it. "Because the floor is gross. I'm not going to make you sleep on it."
Chuck smirks, "That's not what I mean, and you know it. Why are you throwing away everything you've worked for, to help me?"
Sarah thinks for a moment and decides to deflect. "Because after everything you've done for your country, you deserve to find your father. You deserve to get rid of the intersect and live a normal life. Plus it's my job to protect you."
Chuck is sad, "And when it's not your job to protect me, what happens to us then?"
Sarah looks at him and gently says, "One mission at a time Chuck."
Sarah turns out the light and lies down facing Chuck. His arms are behind his head as he stares into the darkness broken by the strobing neon sign outside the room. She closes her eyes.
Sarah is awakened by the sunlight pouring thru the well-worn curtains. The green glow they cast does nothing to quell the yearning in her heart, or the need between her thighs. Her eyes still closed she can feel Chuck's body against hers. His arm is over her hips. His hand holding hers. Her eyes still closed she rubs her fingers over his. A signal that she's awake and willing.
Chuck slowly plays with her fingers. Taking the risk he pushes his face between her neck and shoulders to kiss her throat. Sarah's heart starts to race, her mind with it. Can I do this? It goes against all my training. He's an asset, I'm an agent. Fuck it." Sarah rolls to face him, and Chuck's mouth meets hers. They're finally letting it happen. Two years and they finally let their desires win.
Sarah sighs as she holds him tight. "Chuck… I need you. I need you more than I've ever needed anything in my life."
Chuck lifts his head to look in her eyes, "You have me, Sarah. You've always had me. And now we have each other."
His hands slowly roam over her body touching the places he's wanted to touch for so long. He slides his hand under her flimsy tee shirt. Her breast is soft, parts firm against his hand. Her moans serve to drive his passion. His hand slides down into her panties.
Sarah's back arches. "Oh, Chuck I'm on fire. Please don't make me wait. I've waited so long."
He pushes her underwear down and moves on top of her. His weight feels wonderful to her as her legs spread of their own volition. Time stops and becomes unimportant to the two lovers as they couple. Expressing what they've hidden for too long. The sounds of desire and passion fill the cheap motel room as they satisfy their need; their emotional, physical, and spiritual need for each other. Nothing exists in this moment but the two of them. There is no space between them. They're at long last, one.
Their passion sated for the moment, Chuck holds Sarah close, her head on his chest.
He takes a deep breath, "Are you okay?"
Sarah smiles, "Yes Chuck, I'm fine. You know, I've had feelings for you for a long time. I'm sorry I made things so rough for you."
Sarah can hear Chuck's heart speed up as a shiver runs down his spine. "Sarah, I'm scared. Not because I'm with you. I've wanted that forever. I'm scared because I could lose you. I can't lose you, now more than ever. You have to go back. Tell them you tried to find me, to bring me back."
Sarah stretches up and kisses him, "Sorry Chuck, we're in this together now. Bonnie and Clyde, Butch and Sundance, and now Chuck and Sarah. No going back only forward. Right now we need to find a place to lay low. A safe place where I can take a breath and figure out a plan. A plan to find and rescue your father. We'll deal with the rest after that."
Chuck pulls her in tight, "You do know that Bonnie and Clyde, Butch and Sundance, died in a hail of bullets."
Sarah smiles and kisses his neck, "Did they? Well, they didn't have Chuck "Wiley Coyote" Bartowski, and I do. I believe in us. We'll be fine."
"Are you sure there's no way I can convince you to go back, be safe?"
"Bartowski, are you insinuating that I'm a one-night stand? I'll repeat. We're in this together. Till the end."
Chuck smiles, "You mean we get to do that again? Okay, you can stay."
Sarah laughs. "Only you can make being on the run, fun. Chuck, you realize it's us against everybody. The CIA, the NSA, the FBI, all the alphabets are looking for us, plus Fulcrum. Any ideas on where we can hide out?"
Chuck thinks a moment. "Can we afford an inexpensive laptop?"
"Define inexpensive."
"If we can get to a used computer dealer, around 200. I may even be able to barter for repair work."
Sarah sits up on the bed. "Exactly how does one find a used computer dealer?"
Chuck smiles. "Get me to an internet cafe. I'll take care of the rest."
Sarah leans over and kisses him. "Couldn't you just call the Acme Company and have them deliver one?"
Chuck grabs her and rolls her over on top of him. "Sarah Walker, I believe you were listening."
Sarah smiles. "A good spy always listens to her mark. You never know what information may be useful later."
"So, I'm a mark? Am I still not allowed to talk about my lady feelings?"
She moves her hand up to move a wild lock of hair off his forehead, then puts her finger on his lips. "No, you're not a mark. But wait until we're safe. Then I'll listen to anything you have to say. I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say. Remember one mission at a time."
A/N Okay I am about to get honest. I've been going through some tough times. Health issues that have led to time in hospitals and rehabs. So here's what I'm thinking. I have been depressed and my writing has been affected. I started a story but have been unable to write recently. I am going to post the first chapter and I'm hoping that feedback from my readers will energize me and get me writing again. So I apologize for using my readers as an experiment. I hope I won't disappoint. Watch for chapter two soon.
