Day of the game. Kel said he was a forward on the court. That meant he was the one jumping up to make the hoop every time. It looked like Nearby City was winning, yet Aubrey couldn't help but feel impressed seeing how active Kel was. It was like the rest of their hometown team couldn't keep up with him… which was probably why they were losing.

Kim was with her. So was Charlene.

"Y'know Aubrey, you've been getting real close with Kel lately…" Kim said.

"Yeah?" Aubrey wasn't fazed.

"Well? Are you guys dating?"

Aubrey rolled her eyes, "Just quit it, Kim. He's one of my friends. Just like you are."

"Charlie saw him walking you home the other day."

Charlie said nothing, as usual, but Aubrey also said nothing which was unusual.

"Oh my gosh! I knew it!" Kim started getting excited, "Alright, tell me all the details…"

"I miss Sunny."

Kim raised her eyebrows, before taking on a much more pitiful expression, "Oh, Aubrey…"

Charlie also seemed taken aback.

"Let's just focus on the game, looks like we're gonna lose anyway." The clock was ticking down to its last seconds, and Faraway Town was nowhere near catching up. Nearby City had a 5 point lead on them and there were only 5 minutes left. Kel was near the hoop, waiting for his teammates to pass the ball to him, but they were fumbling at getting it past the court's midline against the city kids.

Aubrey stood up, the only one standing in the whole crowd on the Faraway side. She stuck out even more with her bright pink hair and electric blue ribbon. She took in a big breath and hollered, "GODDAMN IT KEL, JUST GET THE BALL!"

She could see him cower in the upper corner of the court, looking blank and struck like a deer in headlights.

"I SAID GET IT!" and in an instant he darted the opposite way on the court, flitting past city kids and his own teammates to claim the ball. She could see from the way the coach's arms were waving around that he was shouting at Kel for leaving his spot. Kel took possession of the ball and dribbled it down by himself, weaving seamlessly through the Nearby City kids and straight into the hoop with just 30 seconds to spare. The Faraway crowd erupted into cheers. They still lost the game, but at least they had a little bit of an underdog moment.

Aubrey sat down, and audibly sighed, as if she were the one who had just been sprinting around. Kim laughed next to her. Charlene was smiling.
