Chapter Five:
"The 0-8-4 specs. Asgardian weaponry, portal creation, Donnie's weather machine. If they get their hands on Gravitonium in The Fridge—"
"—It's below The Fridge. No records." Coulson cut Ward off.
He, Ward, Selena, and Skye were all bundled in the lab, going through all the things they had acquired during the year.
Selena was just sitting in her usual place on a table, watching Ward intently, fiddling with an empty beaker because neither Jemma nor Fitz were there to take it away from her as they usually did.
He didn't look like a Hydra agent, but then again, looks can be very deceiving.
She wanted so much to believe that whatever she overheard earlier, was just taken out of context and he and Garrett were loyal to S.H.I.E.L.D., but she had a feeling in her gut that said that wasn't true.
Every time she looked at Ward, the alarm bells of her mind went off, which couldn't mean anything good.
She'd have to wait for him to slip up.
"Okay but, on the off chance we'd give them the designs to weaponize it. The drug from T.A.H.I.T.I. sir? All here. If Hydra's really about to seize this plane—"
"—We should wipe the system." Coulson caught onto what Ward was saying.
"I'm backing it up on this hard drive to keep our edge." Skye typed away on her laptop.
"Then do it." Coulson approved. "Scrub the plane clean."
"It'll take some time."
Selena's eyes narrowed as Garrett made his way into the room with Fitz. "We're working on buying you some." And her glare didn't falter until he was completely out of sight.
He was definitely Hydra. He had to be.
Meanwhile, at The Hub, Simmons and Trip were trying their very best to contact the team, but nothing seemed to be working.
"I'm telling you." Jemma shook her head. "This signal is clogging everything up. Something terrible has happened."
Before Trip could actually answer her, the doors behind them flew open, prompting them to spin around to find soldiers pointing their guns at them.
"Freeze!" An agent ordered. "Show me your hands!"
This was a complete mess.
As soon as The Bus made it to its destination, Garret led everyone through the hallways of The Hub, being careful not to be seen.
"It's called a mouse hole." Fitz rattled off his knowledge. "It cuts through anything, really. I designed it a year ago and submitted it for testing, but never reached distribution."
"Top agents always hog the good stuff." Garrett commented.
Selena just raised an eyebrow, choosing to keep quiet.
Did she mention that she flat out didn't like this man? Oh she did? Well, you get to hear it again.
Selena really really disliked Garrett. Everything about him made her skin crawl.
"You're right." Skye addressed Ward, handing him something before she took her sister's hand and pulled her along with them. "The hard drive's safer in your hands. You haven't taught me how to hold up under torture yet."
Watching them attempt to flirt without actually flirting was torture and Selena seemed to be holding up just fine.
Maybe she was more of an agent than she thought she was.
Ward just smiled at her and put the hard drive into his backpack. "We'll get to that. It's real fun."
Ewww. Gross.
"Alright, here's where we split up." Coulson spoke from the back of the group. "Skye and Ward?"
"Heading to the nerve center." Ward answered.
"Disable their systems, most importantly their control of our plane."
"Copy that." Skye nodded.
"Remember, these agents are under orders. Use I.C.E.R.'s only. We'll find Simmons, get her out. Selena, you're coming with me."
Coulson honestly didn't know how relieved Selena was to hear him say that. She was getting away from Ward and her sister's star-crossed romance!
"We should go straight to Hand." Garrett suggested. "Hydra's always talking about getting their heads cut off, right?'
"Saving Simmons and Triplett, that's our priority."
"I agree, and that's how I'd get it done. Hope you have a better plan." Garrett moved quickly, keeping up with Coulson, with May, Fitz, and Selena following behind.
"Phil, I can help you if you…..." May held up her handcuffed wrists.
"We need your help, but the cuffs stay on." Coulson told her unapologetically.
Selena honestly felt bad for her, so she gave her a small smile.
May believed that what she had done was right.
No one could fault her for that. Not even Coulson.
Maybe when he got done with being so angry, he'd see that too.
The team made their way outside of a room full of surveillance monitors and rushed in as soon as the door was unlocked.
Garrett pushed May and Coulson in first. "We caught 'em. Agent May took one of mine in the arm." He said before pushing Coulson again. "Softy there, wouldn't let her bleed out."
"Do you need medical assistance?" A guard asked, resting a hand on Garrett's shoulder in concern.
"Just your sidearm." Garrett struck the man, taking him by surprise, giving Coulson and Fitz a window to ice the other two guards in the room.
Once they were all knocked out of commission, Fitz made his way over to the monitors and immediately began to work. "Okay, come on Simmons. Where are you?"
"There." May pointed to a something on the screen she had begun to look at. "Agent Hand. Outside the east wing situation room."
"This is definitely a situation." Garrett nodded as he, Fitz, and Coulson looked over her shoulder at the monitor.
"Is Simmons there?" Fitz asked, hoping his best friend was alive and well. "We don't move until we find Simmons."
"I'll say it again." Garrett reiterated. "Best bet to save her, use the ventilation system to get above the sit room. Drop down using Fitz's sweet little mouse hole, and put two bullets through Victoria Hand's heart."
This alarm bells in Selena's head were going off like crazy.
She had been occupying herself by standing by the door to keep watch, but the more Garrett spoke, the more nervous she got.
This guy was just no good.
She didn't trust him.
"Yeah, that's an option sir." Fitz agreed, willing to do anything to get Jemma back.
"Without questioning?" Coulson was clearly not on board with that line of thinking.
"Questioning what?" Garrett scoffed. "Whether she wants to kill us fast or slow?"
"Last time we did that, we shot the wrong man."
"Because she wanted us to! Phil, this is a battle for S.H.I.E.L.D.'s soul, and we're on the frontlines. History will remember us this day."
Selena couldn't take it anymore…...she had to say something.
He's Hydra. She mouthed to May, discreetly pointing at Garrett.
May furrowed her eyebrows, not exactly catching what Selena had been trying to tell her, so the ten year old tried again.
This time, she used what little bit of sign language she knew from teaching herself with books. He's Hydra.
And to Selena's surprise, May didn't brush her off or act like she didn't know what she was talking about.
She just nodded and moved closer to Phil to back him up, should he come to need it.
Selena literally let out a big breath of relief as some of the weight on her shoulders and queasiness in her stomach went away.
Maybe she should've said something sooner.
"That's right." Coulson answered Garrett. "It's for S.H.I.E.L.D.'s soul. And murder without consideration is a sure—"
"—Consideration? Consider this, she had one of my men killed with a bomb rigged to his gas pedal. The other two were floating in the hotel pool, and they weren't doing the backstroke!"
"But we can just as easily I.C.E. her." May subtly motioned for Selena to come further into the room.
If this suddenly got messy, which it probably would, she could not be by that door.
Selena saw the gesture and quietly walked over to Fitz, looking at what he was doing.
"You don't put someone like her on ice. She had Skye shot in the stomach. In the stomach! Because she was curious. Mike Peterson, burned alive and turned into some kind of freak. Ordered one of the kid's foster parents to make her life as miserable as possible, physically and mentally! She tortured you, using the same machine she used to brainwash that girl in the flower dress!"
Selena's jaw dropped.
She had been right.
This man did know too much. She had never ever uttered a word about her foster parents or even that she had been in the system around anyone. Including Garrett.
"And right now, she's probably doing the same to Agent Simmons. Oh, I've considered it plenty, my friend."
"No. Simmons will be fine." Fitz said firmly.
"Just being realistic kid."
"I never mentioned that." Coulson realized.
"I'm telling you." Garrett tried to move on from that point. "Killing her quick would be a mercy."
"I never said Raina had been inside the machine." Coulson continued. "I never told that to anybody."
"I must've read it in a report then." Garret tried to over up his mistake.
"You weren't with us."
"The point is, how many more have to suffer before Vic gets hers?"
"After Skye was shot, Quinn said it was so I would lead The Clairvoyant to the cure. That's exactly what I did." Coulson gasped. "That's exactly what I did."
"Phil…...look, it's been a rough day. I—I get it. But you need to take a second—"
"—There were no records with specific details of when I was living at any foster home...…" Selena's voice was just above a whisper as tear glazed her eyes. "How do you know that? Does that mean that…..." She trailed, not wanting to think about how Hydra had actually had a hand in ruining most of her life.
There was an uncomfortable silence that filled the entire room as everyone began to see that Garrett was in fact, Hydra.
"I was hoping it wouldn't come to this." Garret sighed sadly before a swarm of soldiers barged into the room.
"Freeze! Don't move! Hands where I can see them!" One yelled.
The five put their hands up, glaring at Garrett.
"Easy fellas." He smiled at them.
"Take Agent Garrett into custody. He's the murderer they call The Clairvoyant. He's a traitor." Coulson spat.
But the soldier didn't move, they just kept their weapons trained right on them.
"Anytime boys." Garrett waited patiently as some soldiers in the back wiped out the others. "Hail Hydra."
"Hail Hydra!" The remaining soldier chanted.
A lone tear left Selena's eye as she saw everything falling apart.
There was no going back now.
"Those three men in your unit, I guess they asked the wrong questions." Coulson gathered.
"Until today, it was all about keeping secrets." Garrett shrugged nonchalantly.
"Are you gonna kill us?" Fitz asked from beside Selena.
"That wasn't my plan, really." Garrett sighed and moved closer to them. "If it was, I could've done that at any time I wanted. No, Coulson and I go way back. Back to the when Nick Fury was teaching us tactics." He smiled at Coulson. "Cleaning corners, slicing pie. Remember Phil?"
"Fury would bury you for this."
"Probably." Garrett seemed to be taking all of this far too lightly. "Instead, he'll just have to roll over in his grave. He must've uncovered our secret. Top brass did what they had to do. Explain why we've suddenly come out of the shadows. Not a minor inconvenience. I might add."
"Top brass?" May questioned.
"Oh, my, yes. Tip-top. We had a good thing going too. Waving the S.H.I.E.L.D. flag as hard as we could. I guess we'll be changing colors now."
"For Hydra?" Coulson asked. "Your really believe all that crap, spreading death and destruction?"
"I would say I'm a true believer. Let's just say I felt the wind changing direction and swung my sail. You really should too."
"I would die before serving Hydra."
"I hate to tell you but...…you've been serving Hydra all along." Garrett smiled. "I guess death is the only alternative. It's a sad thing. I consider you my friend. I was happy when I heard you'd make it through."
"So happy, you had me tortured for three days to find out how they did it."
"I didn't enjoy that Phil. This is me being honest."
"No John, this is you being a psychopath."
"I know you'd follow him to the grave, so...…" Garrett moved onto May and pouted, before laughing in her face and moving onto Fitz. "As for you Agent Fitz, you'll hold a very high rank, run our tech division, if you volunteer. If not, you'll have no rank and a lot of pain. Of course, either way—" He bowed mockingly. "Your services will be required."
"You're gonna suffer for what you've done." Fitz fought to keep the control in his voice. "And I plan on being a big part of it."
"I like you kid."
Selena could see the tears slowly making their way down Fitz's cheeks before Garrett stepped up to her, gently grabbing her chin in his calloused hand.
"You're a brave little thing, aren't you?" He questioned in a sickly sweet tone that made Selena want to spit at him.
"Get your hands off of her!" Coulson made a move to get him away from her, but the soldiers trained all their weapons on him.
"Move and they shoot." Garret warned, still holding onto Selena. "Of course, with all we've had you go through, why would you be anything but brave? You knew all along that I was no good. Listening in on my conversations, giving me weird looks, not trusting me. You were right not to trust me. You're going to be a good asset. You're a little older than Romanoff when she started, but you're a lot stronger and smarter than she was when she was your age. We'll see if we can create another Widow yet."
Selena just glared at him for a moment before he pulled away to address his troops.
"Alright, let them have it." He ordered. "But shoot this one in the kneecaps and spare that one." He pointed to Fitz and Selena, respectively. "She can't train if gets injured."
The soldier got ready to fire as Garrett grabbed Selena and pulled her out of the way, so she wouldn't get caught in the crossfire, when an explosion went off nearby.
Selena saw that he was distracted and sunk her teeth so far into his arm, that she drew blood.
Garrett let out a growl and slightly released his hold on her, giving her enough time to rip herself out of his grip before kicking him in the groin.
He keeled over in pain, but grabbed her again in a tighter grip.
This time, she took two fingers and shoved them as far up his nose as she could, before pulling, making him howl in pain, forgetting all about his hold on her.
Selena didn't stop until she saw blood trickle out of both nostrils, and ran to Fitz, who was taking cover under a desk.
Coulson immediately jumped into action and picked up a wrench, clocking him with it as hard as he could, continuing to throw punches at him.
Meanwhile, May had expertly gotten her handcuffs off and kicked a gun out of a soldier's hands. The weapon slid on the floor and stopped near Fitz and Selena, who looked at each other nodded.
Garrett somehow managed to get the upper hand in the fight and slammed Coulson up against a wall. But Coulson bounced right back and returned the favor, eventually getting him into a headlock.
May had taken out all but one soldier and was working on the last one, as she threw a slick punch that had him scrambling back.
A soldier May had previously taken down, came to his senses and reached for his gun, pointing it directly at her, But she hadn't noticed because she was already occupied.
"May!" Selena yelled to get her attention, which she did, but it was already too late.
At the same time, Fitz grabbed the gun with shaky hands and shot the soldier three times before dropping the gun, mortified by what he had just done.
Coulson and Garrett were still trying to best each other, but Garrett pulled a knife out of his pocket and cut Coulson's wrist, prompting him to let go, giving Garrett the opportunity to sit on top of him in order to finish the fight.
Fitz suddenly remembered the cylinder and called to Coulson before tossing it to him.
May quickly got down before Coulson slammed it onto the ground, allowing a device to fly out of it and hit Garrett, knocking him out cold.
"Hands up! Drop your weapons! Don't move!' Some agents burst through the door along with Victoria Hand herself.
Fitz and Selena crawled out from under the desk as Coulson and May stood up with their arms raised, knowing the fight was over.
Simmons pushed her way past all the agents and pulled Fitz into a tight hug once she laid eyes on him, before wrapping her arms around Selena as well.
"I'm not Hydra." Coulson didn't even feel like pleading his case.
"We heard." Victoria nodded. "Everything."
"Who is? How deep does it go?"
Victoria smiled sadly before leading them all down stairs into a hallway, where undercover Hydra agents were being escorted out.
Selena watched for a while, before sliding down onto floor to sit down. This was all a little too much for her ten year old body.
It was all a little too much.
"It's all gone." Skye looked around The Bus.
"In pieces, at least." Simmons nodded.
"Skye, try to restore some of the firmware in the plane's systems." Coulson began to order. "Fitz-Simmons, get a crew together. Help May patch the holes. And Selena?'
"Hmm?" Selena had been sitting on what was left of the couch, staring into space.
"Good work." He complimented, alluding to her little 'fight' with Garrett. "That took guts."
That got a smile out of her.
"Now help patch the holes."
"Yessir." Selena mock saluted, halfheartedly and got off of the couch to do as she was told, leaving Coulson and May alone.
"She's got guts." May commented. "Any other kid would've screamed and cried for help, but she jumped in headfirst to help herself, and knew when to get out."
"Yeah." Coulson agreed, watching Selena get further and further away from them. "We were ready to jump in and get Garrett away from her, but she took advantage of the fact that he was distracted and defended herself. Even broke his nose. She'd make a great agent one day."
"She told me Garrett was Hydra a few minutes before we figured it out."
"Garrett said she knew." Coulson nodded. "I wish she would've told me. I wonder why she didn't."
"Why don't you ask her?"
"I will."
There a period of awkward silence between the two before May spoke up again. "You still want me onboard?'
"You're not a friend." Coulson shook his head. "But I do believe you're an ally. We need all the allies we can get."
"What are you planning to do next?"
"Survive."
A/N: Okay so...obviously, Selena just couldn't keep her mouth shut and she told May that Garrett was Hydra. But I'm proud of my little bean. She fought dirty, but she got away! Unfortunately, as we all know, the battle is far from over...
