Chapter 7:
A Rude Awakening for some…
(And A Real Eye Opener For Others)
{*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^} *-Simon-*-Simon-*-Simon-*-Simon-*-Simon-* {*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^}"I-b-but wait…you're girls." Ritchie reiterated, blinking, head shaking in confusion, looking over at Walter, pointing towards Bindy and Dani.
"Dad- they're girls."
"Yes Ritchie; I can see that."
"And you gave him your word that y-"
"Yes I know."
"But then doesn't count right? I mean h-"
"Actually…yes it does. You give your word on something you keep it; even if the other person was lying though their teeth. You're not responsible for their integrity but you are for your own…" He sighed, scoffing faintly, folding his arms, gaze shifting over the group before settling back on Alec, glaring irritatedly.
"You just be sure to watch for any other tricks. They fool you once it's on them, anymore it's on you."
Alec sighed, holding his hands up placatingly.
"Look Walter I know it wasn't the most honest move but it was the best one I had. Our company- our team- these people right here-" He paused, shrugging, gesturing towards the group.
"Are the only people with the knowledge and technology to get you home. They are the ONLY ones. Your only option if you want any chance of getting back home and back to your normal lives. Anyone else finds you you're out of our jurisdiction and you're out any hope of ever getting back home.
That is the last outcome any of us want. We needed a way to get you to genuinely listen to the situation that you are in and really understand the stakes here. This is not a world you'll know or understand or likely even recognize in many aspects.
It is going to be shocking, probably unsettling. There are gonna be a lot of things that don't fit for you. This is not the world you know and literally your only chance of getting back to the one you understand is this group-" He paused, gaze flickering over to Ritchie, catching his eye pointedly.
"Yes these 'girls'. These 'girls' are your only hope…" He held his gaze a moment longer before shifting back over to Walter, giving a slight shrug and a bit of a wave.
"Look Walter; I know the way I went about it was underhanded; I apologize for that but it is imperative that we have your cooperation here. I needed you to really listen to the situation and understand that this team is your only hope at getting back home.
Can you honestly tell me if you knew from the start that half your rescue party was made up of women you would have really taken us as seriously? Or would you have just waved it off, dug in and assumed that I didn't really know what I was talking about because I have a 'girl' doctor and a 'girl' head of security?" He paused, brow quirking in challenge, folding his arms, waiting for his reply.
Walter faltered, clearly unable to argue the point but also clearly unwilling to outright agree. He eventually just settled on glaring and huffing faintly, giving an annoyed shrug.
"Well we'll never know, will we?"
Blake snorted, raising a finger to interject.
"I know."
"Blake? That's not helping."
"Wasn't trying to Aunt Millie."
Walter glanced over, flashing a faint glare at the young women before his gaze shifts over to his wife, meeting her eyes questioningly. She takes a deep breath, flashing a faint, encouraging smile. Walter holds her gaze for a moment before shifting back over to Alec.
"Maybe you have a point. Doesn't make what you did any less shifty."
Alec sighed, giving a faint shrug.
"Come on Walter, you're former military. Surely you know that sometimes on a mission you gotta take a less than straightforward route to get the best possible outcome. I wasn't deceiving you just for the hell of it. I was doing it in order to ensure we got the best possible outcome here. The best outcome for you; for your family.
I know you hate this. I know and I totally get it. Situation reversed I'd feel the same way. You can't purposely deceive someone and then turn around and expect total trust and cooperation from them. Even so that's basically what I need to ask of you. What I need to ask you to do in order to protect your family and get you back home.
I know feeling like you were played sets you on edge and makes you want to fight this. It makes you want to argue. Want to just blow what I'm saying off as nonsense or as just another trick and find some way to fix it yourself but I'm telling you Walter; that will not work.
Your only hope for getting back home is us.
Your family's only hope for getting back home is us.
I get that you don't like it and I totally understand but this isn't about what you like or what you're most comfortable with; this is about keeping your family safe and getting you all back home safely.
That's what matters most to you…right?"
Walter huffed, shrugging irritatedly.
"Of course it is b-"
"Well we're the only way that happens. I'm sorry but this is the only option we had here."
"Eh…I wouldn't say the ONLY option…I had an alternative." Bindy chimed in, casually slipping over a bit closer to Walter.
Alec huffed, rolling his eyes, glancing over at her, shaking his head.
"Yeah, pretty sure he'd prefer my option."
"I don't know Boyscout; I'm actually kinda with him on this one. Your way was really underhanded." She shrugged, giving a falsely innocent, sweet look, smiling at Walter, casually settling between Walter and Ritchie.
Ritchie glanced over, gaze flickering over her, clearly checking her out, subtly shifting a bit closer. Simon just barely managed to cover a laugh, clearing his throat, shaking his head faintly. Walter glanced over at Simon in confusion before shifting back over to Alec, brow raising expectantly, gesturing towards Bindy.
"See, even your own team thinks that was a snake move."
Bindy nodded, reaching up casually resting her elbow on his shoulder, other hand shifting up, resting on Ritchie's, squeezing lightly, flashing a fake sincere look at both of the men before shifting back over to Alec.
"Oh it was…my plan was much more honest and straightforward. No lies, no deception. Just neat, clean and straightforward. Hell, it'd of been quicker too. With my plan we'd likely already be nearly done and loading back into the transport by now."
Walter blinked, head tilting, looking from Alec over to Bindy before shifting back over to Alec, gesturing towards the smirking woman.
"Really sounds like her way would have been better. You're saying they're equal members of the team. If that's the case why didn't you go with her plan?"
Alec snorted, brow quirking in amusement.
"Because I thought a bit of deception would be easier to get past than knocking you and your son out with a stun gun and locking you in a cell till the anomaly reopens?"
Bindy chuckled, shrugging, smirk picking up a tic, lightly squeezing Walter's shoulder.
"I never said anything about a stun gun."
Both Ritchie and Walter freeze, blinking, gaze shifting over to Bindy.
"Your plan was to knock us out?"
Bindy shrugged, head tilting.
"Yeah; but just you two. Thickheaded adult males would be the biggest complication from your time. I'm not about to knock out a teenager and I like the girl's spunk, figured she's good. And I'd never hit a lady…well so long as they weren't actively trying to kill me in any case…
Especially not one so pretty." She smirked, gaze flickering over the other woman appreciatively, flashing a flirty wink.
Millie blinked in alarm, looking somewhat thrown. Bindy chuckled, shrugging unconcerned, waving her off.
"Relax princess; I'm just messing with you. I'm not really that into the prissy, fussy, girly-girl type. Besides I already have a girlfriend-total knockout…in every way." She chuckled, turning from the other woman, shifting her attention back over to the men, brow quirking dangerously, near eager, gaze shifting between them, squeezing their shoulders.
"Hey there's still time; we can always switch plans…what do you say boys?"
"Umm…"Walter swallowed, blinking, shifting back faintly.
"Can we take a vote cause I-"
"Blake!"
"Girlfriend?" Ritchie trailed off, blinking in confusion, shifting over to Alec, pointing over at Bindy.
"But she's a girl?"
Alec chuckled, nodding.
"Yes…yes she is…very observant."
"But she said she has a-"
"She does…Valerie; she's terrifying. They're a perfect match."
He sputtered, shaking his head, looking over at his parent's, gaze shifting quickly over to Blake and his brother, catching the shocked in a whole different way expression on the teenagers face, starting faintly, shifting back over to Alec, again shaking his head.
"I-b-but that...that's not…that's not right."
Alec shrugged, head tilting.
"In your time? Yes that was the general view. But a lot's changed in the last two centuries. There are gonna be a lot of things that confuse you, this is likely just the first of many."
He blinked, head again shaking.
"I-b-but wait…I don't understand-"
The title to your biography…Simon thought, just barely managing to keep the groan internal.
Good lord this boy was dense…
They've been through this already; everyone else gets it.
Walter gets it- he's not happy about it and he thinks Alec's a shifty snake for the way he went about getting him to give his word but he has too much pride to go back on it so here we are. I mean Simon's not an idiot, he has no doubt he'll be watching like a hawk for any slips, trips or stumbles to call them out on but he's at least gonna make a half-assed attempt to cooperate. But this Ritchie?
Oh my god at this rate they're gonna spend the entire time waiting for the anomaly to re-open just trying to get the basics through the dudes thick skull. Seriously dude was a football player; was his time like BEFORE helmets were a thing? Kinda thinking a concussion might be the only explanation for this level of stupidity. That or just willful ignorance. Or he's just a total tool and playing dumb to screw with and annoy them.
If it's the last option dude should go into acting; could make a fortune.
"Okay b-"
Oh good lord seriousl-
Simon's thoughts are cut off by a beeping, booping trill from above. He starts faintly, glancing up, spotting Becks still gliding, colors shifting and flaring in annoyance.
"Oh damnit!" he muttered, interrupting the idiots idiocy, waving up to Becks, giving a little click, signaling the all clear.
A series of dolphin like clicks followed, Becks colors flaring more on his descent. He reaches up, holding his hand out for him.
"Woah!" Kasey breathed, eyes wide.
Becks gliders retract, landing delicately, tendrils finding purchase on his hand, quickly scrambling down Simon's arm and over his head settling on his opposite shoulder, a cacophony of trills, clicks and boops sounding. Simon sighed, nodding, holding his hand up placatingly.
"I know bud, I know. Sorry! I got sidetracked; you never wait for me to signal you, just kinda do whatever the hell you want. I didn't realize you were actually waiting."
Becks huffed, rolling his ocular sensor pointedly, gesturing towards Alec and the others than back at Simon. Simon huffed out a faint laugh, head tilting concedingly.
"Okay yes, your right; new job, new rules. And thank you for taking it so seriously. I appreciate the consideration and sorry I left you hanging so long, I'd of called you back as soon as we got a natural break…it just never really happened." He trailed off, head tilting faintly towards the older brother, subtly rolling his eyes.
Becks snorted, ocular sensor rolling right back, nodding animatedly, a series of blips, boops and clicks emitting. Simon snickered, nodding.
"Oh yeah, big time."
"Hey! Are you talking to that thing about me?" Ritchie exclaimed.
Simon started, standing up a bit straighter, flashing a quick, false smile, shaking his head.
"No, no…nothing like that. He was just reminding me we really need to get a move on. There's a lot of data to collect and some of it is pretty time sensitive so we really need to get started." he finished, flashing another smile, nodding convincingly.
"He understands you? Does he understand me?" Kasey exclaimed, eyes wide and amazed, shifting forward eagerly.
Simon glanced up, smiling at the teenager, nodding.
"Yeah he understands you; this is Becks."
Kasey beamed, giving a geekily animated wave.
"Hi Becks! I'm Kasey."
Becks clicked and trilled, making a little fluttering movement, a glimmering holographic projection of prismatic colors illuminating, colors shifting, rolling and turning, forming 'Hello Kasey' in bright shimmering letters. Kasey started excitedly, giggling, eyes sparkling in amazement.
"Oh that is far out!"
Blake chuckled, settling closer to the teens side, moving a bit closer, looking Becks over curiously.
"It really is." She murmured, before pausing, head tilting, glancing up at Simon, nodding towards Alec.
"She said you're the one who built him?"
Simon smiled, nodding.
"Yeah he was one of my very first inventions."
Ritchie blinked suspiciously, glancing back at his parents, gesturing over at Becks.
"I think the robot was talking about me!"
Blake smirked, nudging Kasey's shoulder, flashing a wink at the teenager.
"Hey maybe it was just saying it thought you were cute."
Becks very audibly snorted, animatedly shaking his head, waving two tendrils in a very clear negative.
"Oh man I like this little guy." Blake chuckled, Kasey nodded, eyes sparkling bright, trying to cover a snicker with a cough.
"He really does grow on you." Dani offered, shifting closer, flashing a bright smile at the little tredectipod.
Becks stood up a bit straighter, trilling and booping, colors flashing, chattering before again gesturing towards Ritchie, rolling his ocular sensor, glancing over at Simon giving a series of dolphin like clicks and squeaks. Simon snickered. Ritchie sputtered, eyes wide.
"Hey! I know that was about me, what did it say?!"
Simon blinked.
"I-uh…I didn't quite catch it. Think it was about us needing to get to work as we're on a time crunch."
On his shoulder Becks snorted, shaking his head, again repeating the clicks and squeaks.
"I think the robots making fun of me! Wha-"
Alec sighed, stepping forward, shaking his head, cutting him off.
"Yeah he kinda does that- you get used to it. And Simon- or Becks or whoever- has a point. We are on a time crunch and have wasted far too much on this explanation. We have a job to do here. Specifically Simon and Becks do. We need to just give them space and let our resident scientist and his assistant do their job."
Becks set up, squeaking, ocular censor widening, giving a loud trill. Simon sighed, shrugging, glancing up at him.
"Hey it's better than Mascot."
Becks huffed, shaking his head, gesturing towards him. Simon snorted, shaking his head right back.
"Oh I am not! And anyway-"
"You're the scientist? You don't look much older than Kasey." Walter interrupted, brow rising, questioning gaze shifting over Simon.
Simon felt a bit of a flair of nerves before pushing it down, standing up a bit straighter, nodding.
"I'm twenty four; just look a bit young for my age. But I am an oasis scientist and I am the scientist assigned on this mission."
Walter looked over him disbelievingly, once more shaking his head.
"I don't really thin-"
Alec sighed, shrugging, waving him off, stepping between Simon and Walter, shaking his head.
"Well that's irrelevant. This is the rescue party you got, this is the only shot at getting home you have and he is the scientist with the knowhow to find out when we'll be able to do that. I already told you our team will not be what you were expecting. You gave your word that you'd let us do our jobs and show all members of the team proper respect." Alec paused, head tilting, brow rising challengingly.
"Simon is a member of the team and he's here to do a job. Are you gonna keep your word and let him do it, or are you gonna be an- as you said- low down, dirty, two bit shyster fink?"
Walter huffed, glaring, beginning to shake his head before just settling for folding his arms and glaring. Alec stared him down for a moment before shifting over to Simon, flashing a faint smile, giving a little wave.
"Go ahead and get to it; faster we can get that data back to base into your algorithm and get an ETA thinking the better. Just go ahead and do what you gotta do, we'll keep out of your hair- if you need help with anything just let us know."
Simon blinked faintly in surprise, somewhat caught off guard by the level of confidence he seemed to have in him before covering that, doing his best to go for confident and self-assured, giving a quick, sharp nod.
"Sure thing Alec. I got it." He flashes one more quick smile at Kasey and Blake before turning from the group, beginning to make his way down the beach, smile slipping, blinking nervously.
Crap! How'd this happen?
He's gone from being the newbie on their first official mission to being THE scientist on the team! Magnus staying back at the base means all of the scientist type things are gonna be on him! Damnit!
How the hell did he miss that!?
Alec's the leader, Dani's medical, Bindy's the scary muscle and he's the freaking scientist!
Geez…good thing there's no pressure…
But…well…he's been telling them all this time he can keep up with them. Guess this is the part where he actually makes good on that.
Again no pressure…
He took a deep, steadying breath, making his way a few yards down the beach, following the tire marks in the sand from the car, focusing on the task at hand, letting the chatter of the others fade in and out.
Okay relax…this is just like what you and Becks have done dozens of times. You're not proving yourself; you're just out investigating one of the gateways…just like every other trip.
You're fine…you got this.
He closed his eyes for a moment, talking one more deep, steadying breath, purposely relaxing, slowly blinking his eyes open, bright, sharp gaze shifting curiously around the beach. Hmm…okay so he can see the skid marks and disruption from the tire treads. From the looks of it the car came through the anomaly, careened about fifty feet before it finally came to a stop. He can see where the marks begin. It looks like the anomaly opened just a few yards in front of a small thicket of scrub, rocks and scraggly trees.
He surveyed the area, slowly moving this way and that, trying to piece together the trajectory of the car. Finally he paused, head tilting, holding up a finger, signaling Becks.
"Becks, run a thermoscan, let's see what we're working with."
Becks squeaked, nodding, shifting on his shoulder, ocular sensor shifting to emit a bright blue green light, scanning over the beach. Simon watched the beam intently, looking for the telltale flare.
He catches the shimmering flickers first, the little after effects that always signaled an anomaly. He gave a little wave, indicating for Becks to slow down a bit- it was always really tricky spotting the after effects, insanely easy to miss if you're not really careful.
He hums, breath catching, giving another faint wave for Becks to slow down a bit more, giving a flick of his wrist, indicating for him to move up a bit. He does, light shifting carefully, catching on the faint, barely there glimmer.
"Stop! There…"
He stops, the beam of light shifting over the faint, mirage like flickering. He hums softly, taking a few slow, deliberate steps back until the entire expanse of the anomaly afterglow is encompassed in the beam. He smiles, nodding approvingly.
"Kay we got it. Run the particle reconstruction simulator."
Becks gave two clicks, the blue green light shifting, flickering off before emitting a brilliant violet pulse. The light shimmers, catching on the remnants of the anomaly, the barely there mirage like glimmers shimmering and sparking into full view.
He hums softly, head tilting consideringly, gaze flickering over the glimmering void in interest.
"Huh…blue…never seen the blue afterlight before tha-" He's cut off by the sound of rushed footsteps on the craggy rocks.
"Hey what's it doing? Is it reopening?"
He turns just the others reach his side, starting, quickly shaking his head.
"No, no it's not reopening, it's just a simulation. A holographic view of it. See a lot of the data I need is visual so it really helps to be able to actually see the anomaly. Sorry for the confusion."
Walter huffed irritatedly.
"Well you could have mentioned it was going to d-"
"It's fine Simon. You don't have to explain your work- and quite frankly after setting in on some of the projects and listening to you guys trying to explain them it'd of likely just been a waste of time as most of us wouldn't have understood what the hell you were talking about anyways. Sorry for the interruption."
Simon smiled faintly, shaking his head, waving him off.
"It's fine Alec, and I should have thought to give a heads up..." he paused, glancing over the group apologetically, flashing a bit of a sheepish smile.
"Sorry for getting your hopes up, it really wasn't intentional. I'm just used to working on these with me and Becks. It never occurred to me that you'd think it was actually re-opening."
Ritchie huffed.
"Well it should hav-"
"No need to apologize, you were just doing your job. Sorry to interrupt you, we'll let you get back to it." Millie interrupted, shaking her head admonishingly at her son, flashing a gentle smile Simon's way.
Simon shook his head, waving them off.
"It's fine and you guys don't have to like run away or hide on the other side of the beach or whatever. You being nearby isn't gonna mess up any of the data. I mean I kinda have to concentrate on it so I can't answer a lot of questions in the moment or anything but there's nothing wrong with you seeing what I'm doing.
Besides this does concern you, seems kinda rude to keep you out of the loop when it's something directly affecting you." He shrugged, glancing about the family, flashing a faint smile.
Millie blinked in surprise, relaxing faintly, smiling back, nodding.
"Thank you, that's very considerate of you, Simon was it?"
Simon smiled, nodding, giving a little bit of a wave.
"Yes ma'am; Simon Lewis, hi, nice to meet you…and…well…sorry about all of well…this." He trailed off, giving a faint shrug, gesturing about the bird infested island.
She smiled reassuringly, shrugging right back.
"No need for that; it's hardly your fault. We do appreciate your help getting us back though." She smiled again before starting, blinking, looking around the group.
"Oh dear! Where are my manners! So sorry, just a bit out of sorts here." She stood up a bit straighter, flashing an apologetic smile and an elegant, graceful head tilt.
Hello, I'm Mildred Aldean- Millie is fine and this is my family. My husband Walter- you've all already met him, just not officially. And these are our children Ritchie and Kasey and my niece Blake." She smiled again, gesturing gracefully to them before turning back to the others, giving a proper, regal type head tilt, looking around the team once more.
"Thank you all so much for your help here, we really do appreciate it as well as you extending us a bit of leeway in regards to whatever the social conventions of the day are. I'm afraid we might be a bit out of our depths here so please know any missteps or slights are completely unintentional." She paused, gaze shifting over the group, landing on Alec.
"And Captain Lightwood I do hope you won't take my husband or sons initial reaction as a slight. While the way you went about things was less than honest given the circumstances it was more than understandable.
We genuinely do appreciate everything you are doing for us even if it doesn't appear that way."
Alec blinked in surprise before flashing a faintly reassuring smile, nodding, wave her off.
"Of course no harm done and we appreciate how hard this is for you and what a huge culture shock it will be. I'm not gonna lie; it's likely gonna be a pretty steep learning curve and there's gonna be a LOT that doesn't line up for you but just the fact that you're willing to at least make an attempt is honestly leaps and bounds ahead of what we were expecting.
Thank you ma'am."
"Millie's fine."
Alec smiled, nodding.
"Thank you Millie. And I promise so long as you guys just give us a bit of the benefit of the doubt, let us do our jobs and trust that we do actually know what we're doing here we will get you back home." She paused, glancing back over at Simon, nodding for him to keep going.
Simon nodded back, flashing a quick smile, relaxing faintly, turning back to it, sharp gaze flickering over the holographic anomaly, slowly walking the perimeter.
"Kay Becks, back to it; I need a full spectrum analyses, the seismographic readouts for our exact coordinates for the last five hours and a thermodynamic topographic breakdown and then we can cross reference the readings with our control stats."
Becks gave three sharp chirps, nodding faintly a new projection flickering into view, the data and readings beginning to scroll across the readout. Simon shifted, lifting his arm, bringing up his data chart on his holowatch, gaze flickering over the scrolling information, mindlessly imputing the readouts as they appear subtly casting a surreptitious glance over at the family, idly wondering just how this was gonna play out.
Okay so…dad's stubborn but moral…morals wildly off by today's standards but still it's something. Whether that's gonna be something good or something bad remains to be seen. Older Brother's stubborn as a bull and about half as intelligent. That could be an issue; thickheaded, stubborn and wildly out of his depths- that could definitely work against them.
But on the plus side mom seems to have it together and while dad may be the head of the family it's pretty clear mom keeps things running behind the scenes. So he's the figure head and she's the brains. That could work for them. And the two youngest members don't seem like they'll be any issue so…
Three out of five's not too bad…
Well…it's something…
He thinks…
Guess they'll find out…
And…well…if anything they always have Bindy's plan as backup.

*****End Of Chapter Notes*****
{*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*][*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*}
Ugh…okay sorry I know it was a really random, abrupt cut off but this chapter has been giving me fits and I just had to get the damn thing to end. I honestly don't know that I like this one that much- it's kinda…not really 'filler' so much as just like a transitionary kind of chapter. Just a way to get from point A to point B (that I restarted and reworked six different freaking times before getting to at least this).
I do really like Blake, she's a lot of fun and Becks is always adorable (and I have a feeling I'm gonna have to be very careful with those two names so I don't get them mixed up lol) and we did get our data and actually officially meet the family- plus we got to have Bindy freak out some homophobes so that's always fun…I do like Bindy, she's a real kick. And I did like Millie kinda getting the situation under control and smoothing everything over. Thinking that's kinda a thing from that era; like the dad's the head of the family and he's 'in charge' but the mom's who keeps the household running and keeps everything spinning like it's supposed to.
I'm hoping I can get back to this one fairly quickly. I completed the story for this round for V7 so that should help speed up the updates a bit. I think all the chapters I have planned for this story from here on out have 2 parts so while this one was a bit short and kinda more of a whimper than a bang it was kinda what we needed to get us to where we needed to be for all the rest of it.
When I get to chapter 10 is when I kinda really pick up the pace as I finish 10 jump to 12 to write it (so I have extra time to proof and edit the final part of the story) then double back and write chapter 11 and post both back to back.
After this update all the verses are through ch7, I have 2 that will be into chapter 9 for the current update (V2 and V4) so those after the next round I'll be pushing through. Even so before I do that I intend to get another chapter up on this one.
It's really frustrating cause I really do adore this verse- it's my 4th favorite but the last like 2 chapters have just been fighting me tooth and nail. Don't know if I've ever had so many false starts and total rewrites.
In any case I hope you liked what we had here.
So here's the ever present update List:
Picture Perfect (Verse 8) {5}
Love Bug (Verse 2) (4)
Death Was Just The Beginning (V3) (5)
The Demon In The Mirror (Verse 4) (4)
Nosey Neighbors (Verse 9) (5)
A Study In Chaos (Verse 6) (5)
You Can Go Home Again (Verse 1) (5 )
The numbers at the end show how many chapters we have left for that story. So all in we have 33 left…which as we start with 108 chapters altogether doesn't really sound too bad (think I'm gonna keep the chapter count downs on there, it kinda helps it seem like not too much.
Next up is V2- I'm really looking forward to that one.
So what do you think so far?
