Chapter 6: Acronyms, Terms, Translations

My military training taught me to provide a reference for acronyms and unfamiliar terms. This is slightly more than that.

I can acknowledge that many of my readers do not speak English as a first language. Even that quite a few of my readers are from other Nations. I get that. Military culture is different enough to civilian culture, even in the US, that there is a cultural gap. I have tried to address this by identifying idioms, slang, military slang, and referencing them here. This way when you see a phrase you don't get... 'cherry pick' or 'par for the course'... You can look it up here to try and figure out what the intent behind the phrase is. This will help you understand my local culture.

ACRONYMS-TERMS-TRANSLATIONS

Angel's Rest Free Clinic - Fictional. Location. Free Medical Clinic in the Glades for the underserved poor population. Founded by Dr. Rebecca Merlyn. Location Rebecca was leaving when she was killed.

AU - Acronym. Alternate Universe.

爸爸 [Bàba] - Chinese. Dad.

Carpe Diem - Latin. Phrase. Seize the day.

CEO - Acronym. Corporate Executive Officer. Company leader.

Cherry Pick - Idiom. To choose something very carefully to ensure that the best option is chosen, perhaps through means that provide one an unfair advantage or from a selection that others do not have ready access to.

да [Da] - Russian. Yes.

DCU - Acronym. DC Universe. Common way for authors to identify when the source material comes from the DC Comics.

Demon's Fang - Nab al Ghul. Arabic. Branch of the League headquartered in Nanda Parbat. Elite hunting branch of the League led by the Heir. This branch takes responsibility for long hunts with various difficulties. Headquartered at Nanda Parbat, Tibet.

Demon's Venom - Daghn al Ghul. Branch of the League responsible for magic, sensing, poisons, infiltration, stealth, and distractions. It Covers Central and South America. Headquartered in Lima, Peru.

Glades - Fictional. Location. Poorest district in Starling [Star] City.

Inner Eye - Fictional. Ruya sense. The inner eye (also called the mind's eye or third eye) is a mystical invisible eye which provides perception beyond ordinary sight. The inner eye is a sixth sense to those with the sight.

Ley Lines - Term. Ley lines are straight alignments drawn between various historic structures, prehistoric sites, and prominent landmarks. The idea was developed in early 20th-century Europe. Ley line believers argue that these alignments were recognized by ancient societies that deliberately erected structures along them. Since the 1960s, members of the Earth Mysteries movement and other esoteric traditions have commonly believed that such ley lines demarcate earth energies and serve as guides for alien spacecraft. Archaeologists and scientists regard ley lines as an example of pseudoarchaeology and pseudoscience.

Microbotics - Field. Technology. Sub field of Robotics. Microbotics (or microrobotics) is the field of miniature robotics, in particular mobile robots with characteristic dimensions less than 1 mm. The term can also be used for robots capable of handling micrometer size components.

Nanorobotics - Field. Technology. Sub field for Robotics. It is an emerging technology field creating machines or robots whose components are at or near the scale of a nanometer (10−9 meters). More specifically, nanorobotics (as opposed to microrobotics) refers to the nanotechnology engineering discipline of designing and building nanorobots with devices ranging in size from 0.1 to 10 micrometres and constructed of nanoscale or molecular components. The terms nanobot, nanoid, nanite, nanomachine and nanomite have also been used to describe such devices currently under research and development.

Nexus - Fictional. Location. Magical and mystical convergence point of ley lines. Location size of the Nexus depends on how many ley lines converge at that location. Two Great Nexus exist. North and South. Major Nexus exists where three or more major ley lines converge. Minor Nexus exists where two ley lines converge or three minor ley lines.

Paparazzi - Slang. Freelance photographers who specialize in capturing candid photos of celebrities for media outlets.

Par For The Course - Idiom. Normal, typical, or to be expected (especially when something is a source of annoyance or frustration). An allusion to golf, in which par is the number of strokes that it should take a player to get the ball into a particular hole on a golf course.

QC - Acronym. Short for Queen's Consolidated Inc. Acronym for Oliver's family company.

Queen Consolidated - Fictional. Business. Queen Consolidated is a family company primarily run by the Queen family. QC for short. Headquartered in Starling [Star] City.

Queen's Gambit – Fictional. Vehicle. Private yacht for the Queen family.

Robotics - Field. Technology. Robotics is an interdisciplinary field that involves the design, construction, operation, and use of robots. Robotics integrates many fields that deal with specific aspects of robotics. For example, within mechanical engineering, the term robotics refers to the construction of the physical structures of robots, while in computer science, robotics focuses on the study of robotic software.

Ruya – Arabic. Ability. Sight, vision. Identified by the League as a special ability that can only be used by special sentients.

生存[Shēngcún] - Chinese. Survive.

SOB - Slang. Military slang. Swear word. Son of a Bit*h.

Sodium thiopental - Drug. Truth Serum. Chemical Name.

Starling [Star] City - Fictional. Location. Large city on the Puget Sound in Washington. I placed it in the rough location of Seattle, WA. I may move it to Tacoma, WA. Either way, major port city on the Sound. Mostly ocean trade and traffic. Gateway to the Pacific.

Tempest - Fictional. Organization. Group Name. Malcolm Merlyn's cabal of city leaders that he uses to manage his blackmail project with the eventual goal of destroying the Glades.

TV - Acronym. Television.

Undertaking - Fictional. Project Name. Tempest's final project to destroy the Glades conceived and enforced by Malcolm Merlyn.

USA - Acronym. United States of America. Country.

WA - Acronym. Washington. State. Inside USA.

Wahy – Arabic. Oracle. League Elite designation for Oracle skill. Given to Shadows trained to use their Ruya.

White Knight - Idiom. One who saves another person from harm or a difficult situation.
