Musutafu Police Station (Day)
'Maybe I should've thought this plan through a bit more.' Dominic thought to himself as he sat quietly in his cell. Even though it was for Eri's sake, he still didn't like being detained. Granted, he could escape whenever he wanted, but he needed the local law enforcement to trust him. Or at the very least, stop considering him as a threat.
While the boy was contemplating his own imprisonment, Detective Tsukauchi was trying to figure out the mystery behind the teenager's sudden appearance. Unfortunately, nothing they had on him, his photo and fingerprints, matched anything in the database. This meant he wasn't registered as a Japanese citizen, which only puzzled Tsukauchi even more. The boy's Japanese was perfect, implying some sort of previous experience with the country.
Naturally, Tsukauchi's next move was to check the registry of other countries. The boy's family name sounded Chinese, and his given name, plus the boy's tendency to speak Italian, pointed to him coming from Italy. However, nothing came up. After that, the detective attempted searching in every country's database. But somehow, nobody with the name Xiao-Long Dominic was ever recorded. It was like the boy just blipped into existence.
With no other option, he decided to interrogate the child. As a precaution, he was moved to a special room that could theoretically withstand a bomb blast. Even if Xiao-Long allowed himself to be arrested, there was no assurance he would remain that way.
"So, you're stumped about me, are you?" Dominic asked, smiling. "I'm not a fan of cheating, but let's face it, you're not going to learn anything about me unless I explicitly tell you."
Sighing, Tsukauchi sat down across from the teenager. "Xiao-Long Dominic. 15 years old, no family, no DNA matches, and no record of having ever existed. You're right when you say I'm stumped by you." The blonde smiled at what he took as praise. "But there are two things I do know about you. For the past few weeks, you've been showing up to fight villains and the occasional hero if they get in your way. And thanks to Eraserhead, we know you've been looking after a girl named Eri, correct?"
Dominic's smile became strained at the mention of his ward. "She was abused by whoever she was with previously." he explained. "I'm not completely familiar with how her Quirk operates, but I know it'd be unwise for her to be put in an orphanage right now."
"Why's that?" Tsukauchi asked, curious.
"Eri has the ability to, as far as I can tell, reverse the time of any living organism that gets too close." the blonde said, shocking the detective. "She isn't able to fully control it yet, so it sometimes activates whenever she gets stressed out. The only reason I'm here talking to you is because my own Quirk protects me from most of Rewind's effects."
Sensing that the boy's statement was true, Tsukauchi decided to prod further. "What is your Quirk exactly?"
"Volcano." Dominic said simply. "It's a Mutant Quirk that makes almost every part of my body, save for my skin, made of molten rock. This also allows me to spew flames and freely control minerals." Bringing up his arms, the boy stabbed his left hand's thumb into his other hand's wrist, drawing magma from the wound. Before Tsukauchi could act, the wound was already healing itself. After three seconds, it was like nothing had happened. "Since my body is mostly made of molten rock, it heals really quickly and dampens how much pain I feel. If I mutilate myself while Eri's Quirk is active, I can bypass its effects without any lasting harm. But since she trusts me now, I don't have to do that anymore."
Another truth. This was starting to get depressing. "Okay, where do you come from? There has to be a reason you're in Japan."
"Oh, that's actually a fun story!" Dominic said, beaming. "So, I was in a bit of a...scuffle with someone much bigger and much older than me." Truth. "And, yada yada yada, I got punched across the world." Truth.
Tsukauchi didn't know how to take that. Despite the story being so outlandish, his Quirk was registering it as true. "Can you be more specific? Were you fighting a villain?"
"Uh, technically?" the boy answered. "But I don't think it'll come to Japan any time soon."
Lie. "What kind of Quirk did this villain have?" Tsukauchi asked, hoping to alert the hero commission about this potential threat.
"It could do so much. It could fire laser beams, spread its body by turning into darkness, control people's minds with Petrified Darkness, and even create rifts in space." Dominic answered. "When I was fighting it, it formed a rift and then blasted me through, which is how I ended up here. The only reason I survived was because of my own Quirk's defenses. After that, I found Eri in the hospital, and you know the rest."
Truth. "One last question." Tsukauchi said. "Why did you go out of your way to fight villains, even when it could've ended in your imprisonment?"
"Call it my own personal way of changing the world." Dominic said, looking up at the ceiling and grinning. "In my opinion, the only way to truly live is to abide by your own wishes. Mine is to create a world where everyone can be happy. It might not be legal, but I would do anything to achieve my goal. Everyone deserves happiness, don't you agree?"
Truth. This boy was completely sincere in his words. It wasn't often a vigilante was brought in who didn't have any intention of helping themselves. "Listen, even if you had good intentions, you still committed vigilantism and injured several heroes in the process. That's not a simple charge, you know."
"I'm sensing a 'but' coming." Dominic said, smirking.
"But there might be a way for you to be let off easy." Tsukauchi groaned at the 'yararara' the boy sitting across from him gave. "I just need to make a call." Stepping out of the room, the detective got out his phone and dialed a number. "Toshinori, there's something you need to hear about."
"I saw the news reports. I take it that you want to speak about the boy?" Toshinori said from the other end of the line.
"The kid's a good person. He doesn't deserve to have his life ruined just because he was trying to keep a four-year old safe." Tsukauchi said. "I'm thinking of becoming his legal guardian."
"Why would he need a legal guardian?" the top hero asked, taken completely by surprise.
"He's got nowhere else to go." Tsukauchi explained. "For the past four weeks, he's been sleeping in a run-down hospital. There's also the matter of the girl he's protecting. Her Quirk is dangerous for people she doesn't trust, and it wouldn't be smart to separate them before she has full control of it."
"I find it hard to believe that you're doing all of this just out of the kindness of your heart." Toshinori said.
"There is something else." the detective said. "Xiao-Long said he was brought to Musutafu by a villain with a portal-creation Quirk, as well as the ability to shoot beams and control people's minds. Doesn't that sound familiar?"
"I don't want to believe he survived, but even I can't understand how another villain could have the same exact abilities he did." Toshinori said, worried. "You're trying to protect the boy, aren't you."
"I don't know why he's being targeted, but my conscience won't allow me to just leave him in the hands of someone else." the detective explained. "Do you think I'm doing the right thing?"
"I haven't met the boy, but if you're convinced he won't be safe otherwise, then I trust your judgment." Toshinori said.
"There is...one last thing." Tsukauchi said. "The kid's practically itching for the next chance to use his Quirk. I saw him shaking in his cell as he tried to stop himself from starting a fire. That's why I wanted to enroll him in UA."
"You think he'll accept being near so many of the heroes he fought?" Toshinori asked.
"To be honest, I think that'll just make him want to go even more." Tsukauchi explained.
He had no idea how right he was.
