Chapter 9: Tragic History
The Special Forces are no more than shocked after they returned to the Fire Gardens from their mission. Not only have they found out the Black Dragon has returned and met familiar faces, and met Kano's son Mateo. But they have also figured out part of the plan they are involved in. The plan involves the Kamidogu. The only ones who have personally experienced these powerful objects were Sindel, Raiden, Kotal, Reiko, Skarlet, and unwillingly, the Cage and Briggs family, Kuai Liang, and even Mileena. Alex, despite having used their powers twice, feels more troubled at what else they could do.
The heroes wonder what to do next, or at least try to figure out what the Black Dragon would want with the Kamidogu. But they feel that someone else may be involved.
"These Kamidogu. Now I remember them. Unfortunately, it was not a pretty sight to behold. The worst experience I ever had in my life." Cassie shivered out of fear. She felt traumatized about the Kamidogu when she and Jacqui were taken prisoner by none other than Havik himself.
"Just feeling the pain in my chest still gives me nightmares from time to time. I hated every moment of it so fucking much." Jacqui said. She remembers being the first victim to fall under the Kamidogu and blood magic with Cassie shortly following her and serving Reiko and Havik.
"Okay, wait. Some of us are out of the loop. What are Kamidogu anyway? Some sort of evil daggers?" Anthony Cage asked.
"Powerful objects. And dangerous and can be evil most of the time. I've never seen them as daggers, only as tiles. Other than that, I don't know a whole lot about them." Alex tells him.
"But if the Black Dragon and Red Dragon are after these Kamidogu things, then who knows what they could do. Probably the end of all life." Flora said. Her heart is beating. She feels something going on.
"But the problem is these things have existed for far longer than any of us combined. Probably since the Elder Gods were brought into existence. Not many people know of their powers and what they could do." Hanzo said. "While I have not used them myself, I have been aware of the destruction they can bring."
"You know about them, Hanzo Hasashi?" Vera asked.
"Unfortunately, I do not possess the knowledge of their history. They have existed as long as the gods did. If only Raiden was still with us, he could possibly explain it." Hanzo said. He's not wrong, given that Raiden probably has been aware of the Kamidogu longer than anyone else considering that he has been a god longer than anyone else, possibly more than Fujin.
As everyone thinks on who should possess some knowledge of the Kamidogu, they think of the many allies they have known for years and years to come. That was until it hit a few certain individuals. "Maybe the Shaolin Monks should know. After all, Raiden supervised Liu Kang and Kung Lao. And when this New Era started, Liu Kang improvised and watched over the Great Kung Lao. From what I have been hearing, Fujin also helps out from time to time." Takeda suggested.
They all look at each other out of curiosity. They all remembered how Liu Kang and Kung Lao were Raiden's best students and the history they were told about Mortal Kombat and the realms as well as the evil beings that wonder about the world. "That would be helpful. But one group alone cannot possess all the knowledge of the Kamidogu. Surely there must be more people who know." Hanzo suggested.
Right as Hanzo said that, Alex and Cassie both share the same looks as they may also know who else. "I might have some suggestions. Sindel knows some of the Kamidogu. So should Kitana and Liu Kang." Cassie said.
"Cassie has a point. After all, Sindel has shown me a different way of how it works. With meditation." Alex said.
"If that's the case, I say we should split up. Divide up into teams and find out about those daggers. And find out what the Black Dragon and Red Dragon would want with these things." Kabal said.
"Where should we go?" Flora Cage asked.
"To make things faster, we're gonna divide up into groups. Flora and Anthony. You two will come with me and your dad to Outworld. Kabal will head back to base to keep an eye out on any movement." Cassie said. The twins salute her.
"I'll take Jacqui and Vera to the Shaolin Academy to see Kung Lao, Jin and Fujin. Hopefully they will know something about the Kamidogu." Takeda said.
"Haven't been there in forever. So it'll be worth the trip. Can't wait to see Jin and how much he's grown. Hopefully his ego has toned down alot." Jacqui smirked, making Cassie snicker.
"Well tell him we said hello. And I hope he's been a good teacher. Nothing personal this time." Cassie joked.
"You and I both, sister." Jacqui said before she hugs both her and Alex. Jacqui and Takeda both turn to Kabal and give him a friendly nod. Kabal responds back with the same thing as he leaves with the soldiers as they take off to fly back to base.
"The Shaolin Academy shouldn't take too long. Only a couple of hours. Can't wait to see what it's like. These guys must really have their hands full of students." Vera expresses her curiosity. She seems happy that she gets to explore more places in Earthrealm, especially with her parents.
"What about me, Master Takahashi?" Satoshi asked.
"Stay here and help with repairs and help your teams be on the lookout for any more trouble involving the Black Dragon and Red Dragon. I will send word if we need any help." Takeda ordered.
"Yes, Master Takahashi. May your journey be safe and sound." Satoshi bows his head to him.
"Hey. I'm just glad you're doing alright. You put up a hell of a fight back there. You're becoming more braver than I thought." Vera said, blushing a little.
"Thanks, Vera. Please be safe out there. Maybe sometime we could do something when we aren't on missions or patrols." Satoshi smiles a little nervously.
"I'm counting on it." Vera said. She walks up and kisses Satoshi's cheek, making the young one blush. Vera winks as she walks up to the twins, who are very surprised at what they just saw. "You two weirdos take care of each other….. Or else I'm gonna find you and put y'all in your place. Again." She playfully threatens, knowing how Anthony and Flora can mess with each other from time to time.
"Hey, I'm not the one who's constantly talking to someone I have a crush on and can be overprotective at some points. You worry so much about us, Vera. You and your sister instincts." Flora jokes as they fist bump.
"Maybe. Maybe not." Vera smiles before she turns to Anthony. "Nice job on the first mission as sergeant. Knew you could do it."
"Didn't think I'd pull it off but somehow I did. Still managed to kick Tasia's ass along the way but it was worth the hurt. I want to inflict more hurt on them next time we see them." Anthony said.
"Now that's what I am talking about. You be careful okay, Anthony?" Vera said as she and Anthony hug each other.
"I promise. You too." Anthony replied. Vera smiles once more she goes up to her parents.
"Are we ready to leave, masters mom and dad." Vera asked.
"No need to call me master if it's just us, Vera. And you should know that by now." Takeda smiled. He knows his daughter means well. As the Takahashi leave to head to the Shaolin Academy, this leaves the Cage family.
"So wait. How are we gonna get to Outworld exactly? We don't have any more jets or anything and none of us know magic of sorts." Flora asked.
"Maybe you forgot about what else dad could go. Why else would he give you so much special training?" Anthony said, smiling at his dad.
"Oh, I can handle that. Watch and learn, twins." Alex said. He activates his powers and his silver white aura glows around his body. Cassie looks on in amazement, remembering how much training he had with Fujin, Raiden and Liu Kang on what else he could do as half Elder God.
Alex waves his hands in a pattern and chants foreign words via magic and within moments, a portal opens up. Flora's eyes widened while Anthony smiled in an impression. Alex bends to his knees and catches his breath.
"Holy fuck! I didn't know you could do that! I didn't know I could do that! That is so awesome!" Flora is more than excited.
"Y-yeah. Trust me. It's not as easy as you think, Lieutenant daughter." Alex nicknames her. "It takes a lot of concentration, focus and energy to pull this off."
"You okay there?" Flora asked out of worry.
"I'm fine. Catching my breath. I also have to think of the place I like to go to. I could show you that one day hopefully. But not now though. Come on. Time to head to Outworld." Alex ordered.
The twins saluted once more as they were the first to enter with Alex and Cassie following. "Just like the good times, huh, babe?" Cassie asked.
"Hell yes. Can't wait to see Jade and the others again. And see how their families are doing too. Been a while since we've seen them." Alex said.
"I love good reunions with the good people I know and love." Cassie said, kissing Alex's cheek as they head through the portal as it closes.
At the Shaolin Monk Academy, many students, men and women and young children have settled peacefully there, where they live with friends and families and are trained to hone their skills. Since Liu Kang has left, Kung Lao and Kung Jin have since been taking over as masters. Kung Lao's ego has been drastically toned down since the start of the New Era due to Liu Kang training his ancestor. The same goes for Kung Jin. Liu Kang and Fujin are ultimately relieved that this has changed. They were always annoyed by their arrogance.
Kung Lao and Kung Jin supervise the newest fighters and many veterans as Fujin watches. He observes how well they have been training everyone for the decades. "Remember. Do not rely on just the same fighting style. You would need to adapt to a certain situation. Always have a rational mind in battle. Never think you are defenseless. Always find a way. Pure strength is not everything." Kung Lao instructed as the monks listened as they practiced fighting styles while synchronized.
"Always read your opponent. But they will adapt. Which means you must adapt too. Fight your enemies by any means necessary. The enemy will not hold back on their strength. Which means you should not either, but that does not mean you show no mercy. The Shaolin is about having morality and wisdom." Kung Jin instructs.
The Monks have since been rebuilt and revived since the start of the New Era. It always angered Kung Lao and Liu Kang on their fate at the hands of their revenant counterparts. Thankfully, they stood a very good chance while helping out Outworld and Edenia against the villains during the battle of the Sky Temple. Among the monks training with them is a young girl.
A young, 20 year-old girl with black, long hair. Her name is Kung Gen. The young cousin of Kung Jin himself. Her parents raised her within the academy and raised her fine. Kung Gen was told about her family history, especially with Kung Lao's ancestor being trained by Fire God Liu Kang. She felt no more than special that her family was chosen to fight to protect Earthrealm. Her personality is that she is much more humble than any monk has ever seen, and not as egotistical as her cousin and great-uncle. Kung Gen has the patience of Liu Kang, but also has Kung Lao's arrogance.
"Kung Gen. Step forward." Kung Lao instructed her and she bows her head to them.
"Master Kung Lao. You have summoned me?" Kung Gen asked.
"Yes. The time has come. You have managed to meet all expectations as all other members in the family have. But there are no family favors. As part of the Shaolin Monks tradition, there is one test that you must pass." Kung Lao tells her.
"Right. I must beat the Great Kung Jin and the Great Kung Lao. Something that I have been looking forward to in a long time." Kung Gen said.
"Don't let that arrogance of yours get the better of you in a fight. No matter what. It's time to see what you have learned from us for the last several years." Kung Jin said. Before they could get into position, they are interrupted by Fujin, who was overseeing the entire thing.
"Kung Lao. Kung Jin. Kung Gen. Please stop at what you are doing." Fujin tells the three of them.
"Lord Fujin? What is wrong? Is there any danger?" Kung Gen asked out of concern.
"We have surprise guests approaching us. They are friends. No need to worry, young one." Fujin reassures them. As he said that, the doors open and three people walk in. Kung Jin smiles at the three familiar faces.
"Hello, Master Jin. It's been more than a while hasn't it?" Takeda smirked. Kung Jin walks up to his friend and also smirks. They both shake hands before they hug each other.
"Good to see you too, Master Takeda. How is the Shirai Ryu holding up under your leadership? Hopefully it isn't too much of a burden." Kung Jin said.
"Oh, it is much more than you think. Being a leader, having a family to raise and training new people all the damn time." Takeda said.
"I hear that all right." Jin smirked.
"Hey, Jin." Jacqui smiled before they hug. "Hope being a teacher isn't too bad for you. Better not be teaching them the ways of your ego." She joked.
"Very funny, Jacqui. But no. Those days have long passed. Speaking of which, you remember my niece, right? Why don't you go ahead and introduce yourself." Kung Jin said.
Gen walks up to the three from the Shirai Ryu clan. She looks at them all with a blank face for giving a small smile and putting her hands together and bowing her head before them. "Greetings, Master and Mistress Takahashi. I am Kung Gen. It has been a long time since we have met each other. I hope you have been doing well."
"We are, thank you. Last time we saw you, you had short hair and a few bruises on your face." Takeda joked and smirked.
"I learn from the pain and improvise. I try my best to endure." Kung Gen said. "And is this your daughter?" Gen asked, looking at Vera.
"This is Vera Takahashi. Named after my late mother. You'll like her." Jacqui introduced.
"It's nice to meet a new, friendly face. Been wanting to do so for more than a while. I'm Vera Takahashi." Vera smiles and offers her hand. Kung Gen smiles and shakes it, feeling happy to meet a new friend.
"Master Takahashi. Jacqueline and Vera Takahashi. Welcome to the Shaolin Monk Academy. It is good to see you three again." Fujin said as he bows his head to them.
"Lord Fujin. Wasn't expecting to see you here this early." Takeda said.
"Of course. I must always help improvise the Shaolin. A wish that I am determined to fulfill for my brother. I have not expected visitors sometime today or the upcoming week. I assume that you are here because of something important. More than just visiting us." Fujin assumed.
Takeda and Jacqui both looked at each other. Both share a serious look on their faces and know what they have to talk to their friends about. "Yeah. You're definitely right. And as much as I hate to say it, it's yet another big one." Jacqui said. Both Kung Jin and Kung Lao look at each other, both feeling puzzled. Yet they share the same feeling in their gut that it is not a good thing.
In Outworld, things seem to be going pretty well for everyone. Chang Bao and Daisuki are training with each other at the moment. They seem to be very happy about the results made as a result of their mini tournament hosted by their parents as well as Kotal and Jade.
"Are you sure you are up for this, Chang Bao? I mean this is an entire new experience for you. Being a leader of this group of next protectors. It is a burden that our father and the late Raiden have held." Daisuki shows his concerns for his sister.
"Winning isn't everything. I may be a slow learner, but I feel I am right. But I do get your words, Daisuki. Being a leader takes a lot of responsibility. That's what our parents have taught both of us. But that does not mean we can't take their words for granted." Chang Bao.
"I am actually surprised. You actually remembered something for a change despite your short-sightedness." Daisuki jokes, making his sister chuckle lightly. Liu Kang and Kitana watch from a good distance, both proud of how far they have gotten with their skills.
Jade trains her son Cyan how to fight on both offense and defense. "Don't just rely on one thing. Rely on the eyes and ears as you adapt."
"Yes, mother." Cyan nods as the two trade blows with their respective weapons. Jade is often on the offense due to her many years of experience with her signature weapon. Cyan's is slightly different, but nonetheless, is still learning, slowly but surely. Things seem to be looking good for Cyan as he wraps part of his weapon around Jade's staff and yanks it out of her hand. "Ha. Now you are defenseless." He smirks.
"No one is ever defenseless." Jade replied before she suddenly throws a razor rang at his shoulder, which he barely deflects before she grabs the middle part of his three-sectioned staff and throws him down to the ground. "You let your guard down again." Jade smiles before helping him up.
"You just move so fast. How am I supposed to counter that?" Cyan wonders.
"Nothing is ever easy. You have to remember that. You have a strong mind, my son. But you must learn and adapt. There is nothing wrong with learning from failure. Don't be afraid to use it." Jade advised, placing a hand on his cheek. Cyan gives a small smile.
Over elsewhere, Kotal is showing Shu-Shang how to use her totem powers properly after her fight against Chang Bao. "Now. Channel your inner rage and think of the sun. The sun gives you extra strength. Do not rely on just strength and emotions." Kotal instructed his daughter.
Shu-Shang nods and continues closing her eyes and raising her arms in the air, as if she is actually trying to reach for the sun. Not only that, she is gritting her teeth in anger, just like on her father's instructions. As she does so, a small totem slowly starts appearing from the ground. Shu-Shang's fists are slowly tightening, trying to bring the entire thing up from the ground. As it rises up midway, it suddenly stops and Shu-Shang quickly falls to the ground, exhausted.
"It's….. It's difficult. I try to use my anger as a strength, but it also acts as a weakness. I've been known for throwing the most tantrums compared to the others. How am I supposed to channel all of this at once? Shu-Shang doubts herself.
"Do not doubt yourself, my daughter. You are holding back. I understand how you feel. I was always letting my anger and judgement get the best of me. I learned to always think straight as I make more progress. It has not been easy, but I did take my time to do so after I lost my father and when I originally lost your mother." Kotal reassures her.
"Your father is right. Though your temper has gotten you into trouble from time to time, all emotions must be channeled, anger included. But you also must not let arrogance drag you down to the ground. Otherwise, it will consume you." Jade advised.
"I understand. I am sorry. I am just afraid that my anger will lead me to hurting someone I care about. Cyan, and our two friends Chang Bao and Daisuki. Though we do tend to argue sometimes, they are special to me. I want to awaken my power as much as they do." Shu-Shang hopes. She can't help but smile at the two, especially towards Chang Bao.
"You will someday, Shu-Shang. But we all the time in the world. No reason to rush anything. Shall we try again?" Kotal asked.
"Yes, father. I am ready." Shu-Shang said. Before they could get back into position, an orange portal suddenly opens in front of everyone. Chang Bao immediately draws her odachi out while Shu-Shang draws her sickles. Liu Kang and Kitana both wonder who it is and walk over to the others.
"Who is coming out of that portal?" Cyan asked, wondering as he holds his three-sectioned staff.
"I do not know. An enemy perhaps?" Daisuki hopes not.
Within a moment, four figures start appearing as the images get bigger as they walk through. After taking a good look, the parents all smile, knowing who it is. "Or perhaps some friends." Liu Kang said.
Much to everyone's delight and relief, they recognize Alex, Cassie, Anthony and Flora walking through the portal, stepping into Outworld as it closes. "Surprised to see us? So are we." Alex smirked.
"Hello, everyone." Cassie smiled as she waves her hand and gives a friendly nod to everyone. Anthony and Flora look around Outworld and its changes and could not help but look in awe. They always wondered what the realm would look like under Kitana's rule.
"Alex! Cassandra!" Jade exclaimed. She was the first to walk up to the two and gives them both hugs. "I am surprised that you two came here today. How have you two been?"
"Plenty of things. Parents have retired, us stepping up to fill in shoes and meeting up with the Shirai Ryu, who's also had plenty of changes." Cassie smirked at her friend.
"Always changing for the better, Cassandra. It is good to see you as general of Special Forces." Jade compliments her before turning to her little-brother figure.
"Hello, Jade. I missed you so much, big sister. You haven't changed a bit." Alex smiles.
"I've always missed you too." Jade said. "You, on the other hand, have grown. Regardless, I'll always be your guardian and you'll always be my little brother, Alex." Jade said before she kisses Alex's cheek.
Alex smiles before turning to Kotal. "Hello, Kotal. It's been a long time since we last saw you. How's life as the general?"
"Just like the old days, but better in every way. It is fitting that you are second in command of the Special Forces, Alexander. You are filling in the roles well." Kotal compliments and Alex nods.
As the adults talk, Anthony and Flora meet the children of Outworld. "I was damn hoping we would meet more friendly faces someday. Name's Flora. Flora Cage." Flora holds out her hand.
Chang Bao was the first to step up and shake Flora's hand. "Greetings. I am Chang Bao. Daughter of Fire God Liu Kang and Kitana Kahn. It pleases me to meet the children of my parents' friends." Chang Bao smiles.
"H-hello. I'm her brother, Anthony Cage. I-it's nice to meet you." Anthony said, feeling shy. Daisuki was the next to step up and greetly shakes his hand.
"Hello, Anthony Cage. It pleases us to finally meet. Mother has spoken highly of your parents and how they helped Outworld and Edenia." Daisuki smirks as he admires their parents, making Anthony feel more pleased.
"Well thank god there are no enemies in Outworld. I would've hated that 100%. Never thought I'd see Outworld like this. It definitely feels amazing. Now I know how my dad feels when he came here for the first time." Anthony said. He feels amazed at how Outworld looks now with everyone fighting as one. He always wanted to visit Outworld after his father Alex told him all about it.
"Believe me. A friend of our parents is a friend of ours. I am Cyan. Son of Jade and Kotal. Edenian and a friend to Chang Bao and Daisuki." Cyan bows his head to the twins.
"Cyan. Flora and Anthony." Flora smiles and nods. The twins then look at Shu-Shang, who just nods to them.
"You may refer to me as Shu-Shang. Cyan's sister. I am Osh-Tekk. Father has told me he has allied with Earthrealmers." Shu-Shang introduces herself.
"Yup. You bet your ass they did. Heard that they had issues and damn pulled through hell and back through all the shit with Mileena." Flora jokes.
"Given what our father has told us, you are not wrong, Flora. I hope there is nothing between us though." Cyan tells her.
"Like hell. Mine told us about yours and gotta say, they look badass." Flora smirks.
"So, I wonder how you four fight, huh?" Anthony wonders, with his head tilting out of curiosity.
"Training hard is as important as protecting our respective realms. It is what we were taught when we grow older. But do not think we will go easy on you if we were to fight each other." Chang Bao offers to train them.
"Now you're speaking my language. That sort of shit gets me pumped. Wait until you see what we can do." Anthony said.
"I was just about to say that." Flora looks at him, causing him to chuckle quietly.
"You are not the only ones with gifts, I can assure you that." Daisuki said to them. From his point of view, he sees his powers as gifts as he does everyone else, no matter who or what they are. Flora looks at him wondering, thinking it may be a challenge.
Cassie turns to Liu Kang and Kitana. "Good to see you two again. A god and a khan being in charge of Outworld. How have you two been? Remaining active hopefully."
"Thank you for the concern, General Cassandra. It is nice to see you and your husband in Outworld." Kitana said.
"Yes, indeed. Even as a god, I must say that I am surprised by your presence. I trust that I can say the same for you two. I can assume that you are fitting into your new role for your mother quite well." Liu Kang said.
"It's not easy, but you're not wrong. But it's something I've dreamed of for years. To idolize my parents." Cassie said.
"What brings you here to Outworld on this fine day?" Kitana asked.
Alex and Cassie look at each other with concerned faces, both knowing what they want to say to their friends. "Yeah. About that. We need your help with something. Like very big help. You're not gonna like it. Trust me." Alex said.
The four looked at them with similar looks on their faces. They even turned to Anthony and Flora, who also share the same look as their parents. Given that fact, they immediately decided to listen to what they have to say. "What is it that you wanted to speak to us about?" Jade asked.
The Special Forces and the Shirai Ryu bring their other allies up to speed regarding recent events that took place. Including the return of the Black and Red Dragon clans and the Kamidogu being targeted.
"So the Red Dragon has returned once again. We thought you two took them down alongside Dogron. And before him, Daegon. But that does not make any sense. Who else could be in charge?" Kung Jin asked.
"This is not the first time the Red Dragon has been outed. In fact, our enemies have survived on multiple occasions, especially Geras, Shao Kahn and even Kronika." Kung Lao replied.
"Kung Lao is right. Whoever their leader is, that person has long since been into hiding ever since Takeda and Jacquline killed Dogron. They must have been facing a major setback ever since his death. That must be the only explanation." Fujin said.
"But who else could be part of it? Lang Cho is dead. Skarlet bailed on them so she could revive Geras. There has to be someone else involved. Maybe a familiar face?" Takeda asked.
"Yeah. Maybe someone that mom knows?" Vera asked, turning to her mother.
Jacqui thinks for a moment. She remembers the time she and Cassie ran into members of the Red Dragon when they were briefly captured by Kano and Erron Black. That was until a certain individual came, attacked the Black Dragon and abducted them. That was when the idea may have hit her. "Mavado."
"You know who Mavado is, Jacqueline?" Fujin asked.
"Yeah. In the Old Era, he came to capture me and Cassie. But we killed him." Jacqui answered. Then those Kamidogu got involved. Me and Cass got captured and brainwashed with a stab to the chest. Hurt like hell."
"I have read about those. Lord Fujin has shown me a lot of things while training with Uncle Jin." Kung Gen asked, causing everyone to look at her with a curious look. "There should be a library where we keep a lot of history. With your permission, of course, Lord Fujin."
The god of wind nods. "We will show you the way." Fujin said to everyone. Fujin and Kung Gen begin walking inside the academy with everyone else following behind them and Kung Lao and Kung Jin.
The seven heroes walk into a huge library. The library has many bookshelves and plenty of monks that are currently reading said books and minding their business. Apparently some of these monks also like to be bookworms. Something that Lao, Jin and Fujin don't seem to mind. Even Takeda, Vera and Jacqui seem to be impressed by the way the Academy is designed.
Kung Jin sees the couple smirking. "What are you two so happy about?"
"Oh nothing. I didn't know you became a bookworm, Jin. Probably lessons on how to make your ego more easier to handle." Jacqui teased.
"Hey. You know I've changed in the New Era and you know it." Kung Jin defends himself.
"But you can still be an asshole sometimes and can be a bit jealous sometimes." Jacqui joked. This makes Jin growl out of annoyance and Fujin briefly smirks. For some reason, he seems to enjoy the family being often jealous and refusing to admit it.
Vera giggles, overhearing the conversation between them. Whenever they call each other sometimes, Takeda, Jin, Jacqui, Alex and Cassie tend to tease and mess each other from time to time. Just like in the Old Era. Thankfully they still get along with each other, albeit even better when Alex showed up. As they continued walking, Vera walks closer to Kung Gen. "Hey. Kung Gen isn't it? How is it that you know this place so well? How often do you come here to study?"
"Whenever I am not training, or when I cannot sleep from frustration. I come here as a hobby. Study history. Family history and the realms and what lies within them. Including the races and Kamidogu. My uncles and Lord Fujin have told me about Outworld and Edenia and of course, the heroics your parents have done. I admire that of you." Kung Gen said while complimenting her.
"You know what Grandpa Jax would always say, that's how it rolls in the Briggs home. We're just that tough." Vera said.
Kung Gen sees the right book and brings it down. She walks over and hands it over to Fujin. "Thank you kindly, young Gen." Fujin thanks her before turning to the others. "Now. Let us begin our research on the six artifacts, shall we?" Fujin asked as he opens the book.
"So the Black Dragon and Red Dragon have returned once more. But based on what I was told, Kabal killed Kano and Tasia and Tremor disappeared. For a long time they have been stuck in a dark corner." Liu Kang said.
"It is annoying to see those sons of bitches come back again. They've been known for cheating death from what mom and dad told us. Some people don't know when to stay down." Cassie said.
"Kano has died in both the Old Era and the New Era. They've been known for being damn predictable, but not completely. The most unpredictable thing they've done was ally with the Red Dragon of all people. Everyone else always leaves them for dead." Alex said. "Still. That does not change a damn thing. Why would they do that? I thought they've been known for hating each other. From what I remember you telling me, they turned their fucking backs on each other before the Reiko accords became a thing." Alex remembered.
"The Red Dragon has always been mysterious. They must have had a huge setback much like the Black Dragon did. Still, from what I read while with Shao Kahn, the Red Dragon has been the most dangerous clan anyone has ever known." Kitana said.
"Yet they are more known for having actual mystical powers and dangerous beings such as Daegon and Dogron. The one that Jacquline and Takeda killed. The question is who else could they possibly ally with?" Jade wonders.
"Could it be anyone from the Netherrealm, mother?" Shu-Shang asked.
"A distinct possibility. But Mileena lacks the sanity and necessary powers to escape the realm and build a huge army. Despite her being unstable, she does make a capable leader in Shao Kahn's absence. I speak from experience." Kotal said. He's not wrong, given the time he and Cassie's team allied against Mileena and her recruits being Rain and Tanya, knowing how little power she had when Kotal overthrew her and took the throne.
"They said that Mateo said that the big boss man will return. The conqueror." Alex said, expressing confusion.
"Conqueror?" Kitana asked. But then it instantly hit her. "By the gods. Shao Kahn?!"
"But that can't be possible. When I was Geras' prisoner, I saw Shang Tsung take Shao Kahn's soul. He died. That should've been his final body." Cassie said. His death grossed her out, but nowhere near as disgusting as when Mileena died.
"Unless he had yet another body just in case he needed it. Shang Tsung probably didn't have time to destroy the others when he was in the Netherrealm with Fujin and the others." Liu Kang said.
"The madman may be arrogant, but he is clever at planning." Jade reluctantly admitted.
"But what do they have to do with the Kamidogu? I mean how dangerous can they be? Maybe more dangerous than Shao Kahn himself. They can't be that bad." Flora guesses.
"But they are, Flora." Cassie said.
"But we do not know where to begin. Where and how can we know such knowledge of these things?" Cyan asked.
"That's why we're here." Alex said before turning to Kitana. "Kitana. You and Sindel are the only people I know that have actually used their powers. Sindel herself told me when me and Cassie were in Edenia. How much do you know about these? I've only seen two of these." Alex said, holding up the page with the six symbols.
"I've gained some knowledge about it under the watch of Shao Kahn himself. He has heard of them, but thankfully never planned to seek out their power. He believed that he did not need them in his failed conquest." Kitana said.
"I too have studied many things when I was with the Shaolin. This also includes the Kamidogu. They acted as keys to sealing Shinnok after Johnny Cage defeated him and Raiden sealed him inside his own amulet." Liu Kang said.
"After the Reiko incident, I initially destroyed the knowledge of it after the accords were bound, out of fear that history would repeat itself. I was hoping that we did not need to do so again." Kotal said with reluctance.
"But thankfully, I have said knowledge locked away in case of emergencies. That was after we forged our alliance with Shang Tsung. I would not dare let that fall into the hands of a snake. I know where to find the knowledge we need." Kitana said.
"If that includes the bad shit those things can do to you, you're not wrong regardless." Cassie said.
"We were told about the whole incident with Reiko and Havik by Kotal. As such, we do not blame you, Cassandra." Jade said, giving her a friendly, reassuring smile and a squeezing comfort on her shoulder.
"I shall guide you all to the library. Where we keep our secrets out of evil hands." Kitana Kahn said as she guides them. As they follow Kitana Kahn ti where they need to be, something seems to be off. Liu Kang stops for a brief moment and hears a voice.
"Liu Kang." A familiar voice said. It sounded like Raiden's voice. Liu Kang turns around and tries to find his former master and predecessor. But he found no one. His amulet briefly glowed a light blue, but stopped a moment later.
Chang Bao turns to see Liu Kang not moving and rushes back to him. "Hey. Father. You alright?" She asked out of concern.
"I am fine, Chang Bao. For a moment, I thought I heard something. Someone familiar." Liu Kang said.
"Really? Like who? You can't be seeing ghosts or anything." Chang Bao said.
"Let us worry about that later. For now, we have bigger subjects to discuss." Liu Kang reminds her and she nods. They quickly rush back over to everyone else. Liu Kang is not the only one who has a strange feeling going on.
Cassie has a scary feeling in her stomach that makes her feel uneasy. She wished that she could shake off the experience she and Jacqui went through with the Kamidogu and the blood magic they were forced to go through. Flora looks to her mother in worry. "Mom? You alright there?" Flora asked.
"I'm okay. Sometimes there are things I wish I could just forget." Cassie said, smiling at her daughter.
"But are you sure we should search for these things? Who knows what could happen if those bastards get their hands on them." Anthony shows concern.
"I know, Anthony. But we can't just jump to assumptions without an actual plan or without any knowledge of these things. Have faith in these families in the Outworld." Alex advised.
The heroes make it to the library and Kitana nods to the two guards to let her and her friends pass. The nods swiftly obey her command and opens the doors for them. Kitana leads them to a new library. One so large, it's unlike anything anyone has ever seen. Even the Cage family feels impressed about the size. It feels bigger than any library that they have seen when they were all in college. Kitana continues to lead everyone down walks towards the back of the library and sees a rather large book unlike any other. Kitana grabs it and pulls it down. Kitana turns to everyone, all looking at her with curiosity on their faces, especially the children of Outworld. "Now. Where shall we start?" Kitana asked.
Fujin, Kung Lao, Jin, Gen, Kitana Kahn and Liu Kang begin to explain the backstory of the Kamidogu. Where they come from. What they are capable of doing. Why are they considered dangerous? What kind of power do they contain? And more importantly, where are they currently?
"The Kamidogu have existed for eons. Crafted by the Elder Gods themselves. They contain the essence of the realms. There are six of these daggers, one in each realm." Fujin and Kitana explained to their respective groups.
"There is one in Earthrealm, Outworld, Edenia, the Netherrealm, Orderrealm, and Chaosrealm." Kitana shows the page that Alex gave her. "The latter two that have not been receiving any fortunate or unfortunate visitors for generations. Orderrealm is where law, order and structure prevail over everything else. It is inhabited by a species called Seidans. Seidans have longer lifespans than humans, but not as long as edenians. But they possess strong magic powers. Despite that, the realm has always remained neutral to this day, as the rulers of its government forbids freedom, believing that it will lead to anarchy, chaos and suffering." Kitana explained.
"Chaosrealm is the exact opposite of Orderrealm. It holds no government and some consider it to be more dangerous than the Netherrealm itself. Chaos itself is considered a religion to those who reside in the realm and practice it and pray in front of many temples spread throughout the realms. Despite this, Chaosrealm has remained neutral evil. Among these species are Chaosrealmers. Primitive, wild, vicious, menacing." Fujin explained. He shows pictures of what the Chaosrealmers look like. Some look deformed, zombie-like and bloodthirsty.
"Like Havik." Jacqui and Cassie said.
"Yes. That is what Kotal has told us during the time-merger. But this is not the first time that someone has targeted the Kamidogu. It was mostly out of greed. Greed which unfortunately led to war. A war where Shao Kahn wasn't always a ruler at the time. Not even Fujin or even Raiden have existed as gods yet." Jade said.
"There was one individual who was once a ruler of Outworld. Before he was succeeded by none other than Shao Kahn himself. Onaga was called the Dragon King. His army was nearly undefeatable. Impossible to defeat. Shao Kahn was his general. Onaga wanted the six Kamidogu for himself to rewrite reality in his own image. He was known for his cunning, draconic abilities, dark magic and fearsome leadership. Rumors say that even Shao Kahn feared him, but some believed it to be false. In fact, from what Raiden has told me from the visions he had when he attempted to change the future to stop Armageddon, he unknowingly inspired Shao Kahn to become a ruler. When Raiden transferred his amulet to me, I saw all the visions he had from his future self, including the events that originally led to Armageddon." Liu Kang said.
"During the time me and Jade have been working for Shao Kahn, he himself told me that he was responsible for killing Onaga. The Dragon King."
A huge painting of Onaga appears above everyone's heads. This painting shows him sporting huge, green wings with pointy ends. He wears shoulder pads, two horns sticking out from his head. He wears golden bracelets on his wrists and armor on his legs. with spikes sticking out from where his kneecaps are, all while showing his big, green scales as well as his tail. He also wears an emerald green jewel on the middle of his chest.
"An actual freaking dragon?!" Flora siad in wow. "God damn!"
"Onaga was obsessed with gaining victory and wanting to rule all the realms. Shao Kahn used that to his advantage. He poisoned Onaga's drink and it killed him almost instantly. He knew that he could not kill him by normal means. After he died, his whole army died with him because of his necromancy powers. Without his necromancy, there was no army. Shao Kahn took over Outworld, wanting to expand empires and merge all realms into one." Kitana said.
"That must be when the Elder Gods created the rules of Mortal Kombat tournaments. Because Outworld started becoming more of a threat to all others. To allow the other realms like Edenia and Earthrealm to defend themselves." Alex said.
"Yes. Outworld was the reason Mortal Kombat existed in the first place." Liu Kang said.
"And like mother said, where Raiden and Fujin were not even gods yet. It is possible that they didn't even exist at that time." Cyan said.
"I could say the same for my mother and father. They were still young by the time they married and I was born sometime before Shao Kahn invaded our home. The reason why Shao Kahn killed the Dragon King was because he realized that obsession with wanting the Kamidogu has cost him to be left vulnerable. He believed that he was invincible; no one could touch him, as they are to be one of the most powerful beings in existence." Kitana said.
"Since then, things have changed. The Kamidogu were hidden away by the Elder Gods. The only way they can be removed is through magical means. But anyone who fails to do so through wrong means will die. They have lied dormant. No one has dared to touch them after that incident." Kung Lao stated.
"Knowing Shao Kahn, even Raiden knew that Shao Kahn would not bother to use their power for conquest. He wanted to conquer the realms through the tournaments. He was completely fine with having his minions fight in tournaments." Kung Jin remembers.
"But there is one thing that must be known about the Kamidogu. From what I pieced together from Raiden's visions, it is possible to combine all six Kamidogu into one. Hence the One Kamidogu. Something that Onaga wanted to use to give him god-like power to give him enough strength to match even the Elder Gods and create any wishes from thought, which can have major effects on reality itself including merging the realms. But not on time itself. This was in the original timeline before Raiden prevented it from happening." Liu Kang explained.
"But can they be destroyed? Is it possible to do so? If they want them so bad, then why not?" Daisuki asked.
"No." Liu Kang corrected his son. "The six daggers are the essence of the six realms. They help spring more life, such as the Jinsei. Within them are the pieces of the One Being itself. It is also impossible to rewrite reality in one's image should all of them not be collected."
"So destroying them is out of the question." Alex said.
"So how and where do we know where the rest of these daggers are? They could be anywhere in the six realms. Dad mentioned that he saw at least two of these as tiles over twenty years ago." Flora said.
"That's right. My mother too has used the one in Edenia. And she helped do the same with your father." Kitana remembered.
"So that's what could be their plan. Knowing how greedy both the Black Dragon and Red Dragon are, they are bound to want their powers." Kotal said.
"When Takeda and Vera were inside that man's head, they overheard Tasia and Tremor say that they have allies. The Red Dragon can't be the only ones. Someone else has to be involved in this somehow and someway." Chang Bao said.
"But the problem is who could it be? The Cyber Lin Kuei are gone for good thanks to Frost." Cassie said.
"Mileena." Kitana said in slight anger.
"That's not surprising. Given my personal experience with her, she has been good at recruiting new allies since Shao Kahn died in the Old Era. She's batshit crazy, but she is capable of being a leader." Cassie remembered.
"It makes total sense. Who else but her? I've never met Mileena but I was told everything about her when I got here. But how long will their alliance with the Red Dragon and Black Dragon last?" Alex wondered.
"I sense that it will be more stable than Shao Kahn's alliance with Geras, given the former's treachery. If they find a way to bring him back, then it will make things worse for us. Because Shao Kahn may want to go after the Kamidogu." Liu Kang said.
"Father. What do you suggest that we do?" Daisuki asked.
"We must make our preparations. Gather our allies and forces. If the Red Dragon and Black Dragon have returned, then Mileena's and possibly Shao Kahn's is inevitable." Liu Kang suggests.
"Warn the Shirai Ryu. They must be aware of what is happening and what may come next." Fujin suggests.
"Good idea. I think it is also best if we send word to the Lin Kuei. Grandmaster Frost may want to hear about this." Takeda said.
"Yes. They must be aware of the situation we are facing. Hopefully they will help us solve this crisis. The most dangerous one yet." Fujin said.
"I will inform them, Lord Fujin. We must be ready for anything." Kung Jin said. Fujin nods. "Gen. You're with me." Gen nods and she and Jin make their leave to inform the Lin Kuei of what is happening.
"Looks like we better get going too. The Shirai Ryu must know. I mean the Red Dragon is their archenemy, given the last few times they crossed paths with each other." Jacqui said.
"An excellent statement, Jacquiline. Given their history together, you are not wrong. I know for a fact that Liu Kang himself is also aware and is making plans for us as well." Fujin said. "Good luck to you and your family." Fujin nods and they nod back.
As the family turns to leave, Fujin turns to Kung Lao. "I sense a great danger coming. This feeling. It feels familiar yet deadly. Deception is a recipe for Armageddon." Kung Lao said.
"Yes. Knowing that our enemies are always treacherous, we can only hope we make as much progress as possible before they make a move." Fujin said.
"Do you think it is possible that he might return once more? Given what happened the last time during our alliance with Shang Tsung." Kung Lao said.
"Perhaps. But you are not wrong, given the fact that he has cheated death before at Sindel's hands. We have work to do, Kung Lao." Fujin reminds him and he nods. Kung Lao leaves to catch up to Jin and Gen.
"Someone has to inform Edenia about what's going on. Let Jerrod and Sindel know what is happening and warn them about the Kamidogu." Cyan said.
"Do not worry. I will send word to Nightwolf. He will be informed and perhaps he and I will meet with the king and queen of Edenia." Liu Kang said.
"The rest of us should be getting back. Inform the Special Forces and we can keep in contact with each other and plan our next moves." Cassie said. Liu Kang nods and Cassie turns to her family and they share the same look before they start getting their move on.
As the heroes walk out of the library and back into the Kahn throne room, Kitana taps Alex on the shoulder to get his attention. "Alex. Do you have a moment?"
Alex turns to Cassie, who is wondering what Kitana wants to talk to her husband about. Given the look on her face meaning that it is something important, Cassie nods to him. "Yeah. I can talk." Alex replied.
Alex and Kitana walk alone to talk. She looks like she wants to ask a personal question. "There is something I have been meaning to ask you. Something rather personal."
"What's wrong, Kitana?" Alex asked.
"You are the only one besides me and mother to use the Kamidogu to meditate. In fact, you used two of them. One in Edenia and one in Earthrealm. Mother told me that she was teaching you how to use it to control your inner darkness. When you were inside your own mind, how did you feel?" Kitana asked.
"To be honest, at first I was mind blown by the experience. Like I was in some sort of astral plan. It looked beautiful from my perspective. Sindel was there with me the first time. She gave me advice on my inner demon, being Kronika. The first time it did not end well. Her voice was unbearable. Even Sindel was able to hear it. '' Alex remembered. He hated hearing Kronika's voice ever since he killed her and all of the things she put him through each time she possessed him.
"Because Kronika was there. Trying to make you fall into temptation. To possess you for all eternity. Mother told me. It must have been very haunting for you. And what about your second experience when you found Earthrealm's Kamidogu?" Kitana asked.
"I felt depressed and saddened. Like part of me wanted to give up, live alone so I wouldn't hurt anyone ever again. But then I heard voices. Not from within, but from the Kamidogu itself. Like it wanted me to find it. When I used it, I felt like I was slowly finding myself again. Every time I see or hear Cassie, I suddenly remembered who I was. All the times Kronika took control of me. I remembered what I've been through with everyone, including Cassie, the family, Jacqui, Jin, Takeda. I can say the same with Jade, Raiden, Liu Kang and even you, Kitana." Alex smiles.
"Alex. It's because I care about you. You're my friend. You always will be. It does bring joy to my heart that you care about me and Jade. Even my mother sees you as a good friend. You and I share this pain when I lost my home and you lost your first family and realized your life was manipulated. But we regained what was lost to us. And I am proud of you. You have a wife and a family of your own. You have Jacquline as a sister, and Jade as your sister and guardian." Kitana replied with a smile, putting a hand on his shoulder.
"Kitana. You know I owe y'all so much for being there for me. Back when we first met. It's because of you I've gotten stronger. And I'm glad that you too have gotten far in life and what you've done for us. How can I repay you?" Alex asked.
"There is nothing you need to give me. All I need is your friendship. You have taught your children well so far. I know that you will continue to do so." Kitana said. She smirks and gives Alex a hug.
"Thank you, Kitana. I'll never forget. Hopefully we will make more progress on what we have to do now. Tell Sindel I said hello." Alex said.
"I promise, my friend. Good luck." Kitana nods. Alex runs back to his family as Cassie talks to Jade.
"Sorry this wasn't the reunion you expected. Wish we had more time to spend with each other. Hopefully after this shit is over." Cassie said.
"Do not fear, Cassandra. We will continue talking to each other as we go through this quest and do so after said quest is done. I believe in us." Jade said, placing a hand on Cassie's shoulder before giving her a hug. "Anthony and Flora is it? You two look much like your parents. You have their eyes." Jade smiles at the twins.
"T-thank you, Miss Jade. You look lovely and have a good family of your own." Anthony said out of slight embarrassment, making her slightly chuckle.
"You remind me of your father when we met. If he has so much potential, I believe you and your sister do too." Jade said.
"Well I wish we get to fight side by side with each other soon. I'd love to get to know you more like dad did. He said you're the best guardian and sister he's had." Flora said. "And the way I've seen you fight, you are damn fierce."
"I am flattered, young Flora. Thank you." Jade smiles at the compliment. It pleases her to hear that they're inspired by her because of the good things Alex said to them.
"Well it's true." Alex said, overhearing the conversation. "You've been a badass since we met. I learned to never get on your bad side. I've seen it plenty of times."
"That is what happens when someone dares to touch you or anyone else I care about. And that includes my family. Otherwise, blood will be spilled." Jade said, making Alex laugh.
"You never change, Jade. Never change. That's why you're the best guardian and big sister." Alex compliments her.
"You haven't changed much either, Alex." Jade said, putting a hand on his heart. "You've raised fine children. I know their spirit. You and Cassandra passed it on to them. I am no more than proud of you."
"Thanks, Jade, my big sister." Alex and Jade hug each other. She kisses his cheek once more.
"Anytime, Alex. We shall continue meeting each other soon. Take care, my little brother." Jade said.
"I will." Alex promises as he walks towards Cassie and the twins. "Are we ready?"
"Ready as I'll ever be, sweetheart." Cassie smiles at her husband before she kisses him. Alex steps forward and waves his hands in the pattern again as a portal opens. Everyone walks through the portal. Alex and Cassie look back at their friends with a smile before they continue walking through as the portal closes.
Note: The Kamidogu are daggers this time just like the MKX comics. And Onaga will NOT play a role in this story. I have something else in mind. And I promise you that we will dive in more about the villains, starting with the next chapter. And I apologize about how this chapter turned out. Feel free to leave any constructive criticism. I hope you guys enjoy.
