AN: Hello everyone! Here's another 'Legend of Korra' story, but this time, one of my favorite characters in the anime world will be present, the protagonist of the anime 'Witchblade', Masane Amaha.
For those of you who haven't seen it, I totally recommend it. It's so good.
So good that I decided to write crossovers of her, this being one of them.
I hope you like it, especially what I have planned for her.
I don't own anything.
Darkness.
That was all she felt and what she could see and she didn't know if it was really what was around her or if her eyes were closed.
She also felt like she was floating, like she was underwater, but there was no water, just… emptiness.
Where is she? Why is she there?
These questions circulated through her mind.
For some reason, she felt that she had done something before she ended up there, something very drastic, but she also felt that what she did was worth it and that gave her some relief.
However, she also felt that she had left something behind, something very important to her, so her relief was mixed with sadness, not only because of that, but also because she was unable to remember what it was that she left behind.
Suddenly, she felt a light begin to illuminate the emptiness around her.
It was a warm, welcoming light.
She felt like grabbing that light or running towards it, but she found herself unable to move her body.
Fortunately, the light began to increase, covering everything, including her, so she could feel the warmth of the light more closely.
Suddenly, the emptiness she felt was replaced by something else, something solid.
It was then that she let out a moan as she opened her eyes.
When she opened them fully, she sat up, revealing herself to be a teenage girl with brown hair and eyes, wearing a yellow shirt that revealed her belly and jeans.
The girl looked around and realized she was in a snowy area with nothing but snow around her.
"Where am I? How did I get here?" asked the girl, but try as she might, she couldn't remember anything. "I… I don't remember anything. Why?" asked the girl as she looked down at her hands, frightened as she had no more memories of herself except for one thing.
Despite that, she knew it wasn't a good idea to stay there all the time, so she got up and proceeded to walk across the tundra, hoping she could find someone who could help her, specifically, find answers about herself.
A couple of hours passed and the snowy field was all she found.
Worst of all, her clothing was ill-fitting for such an environment, so she was now hugging herself as she shivered from the cold.
"I-I'm so cold. P-Please let there be someone nearby." began the girl starting to feel tired to the point where she started to stagger and her eyelids were getting heavier. "Someone… Please… help me." said the girl before unconsciousness overtook her and her eyes closed as she fell to the snow.
Her last thoughts were pleas for someone to help her, not only to escape the cold, but also to find answers about herself.
Earth. Fire. Air. Water.
Since time immemorial, humanity has been divided into two types.
The benders, who possess the gift of manipulating one of the four elements; and the non-benders, who don't possess that gift.
Because of this, mankind was divided into four nations based on those elements.
The Air Nomads, the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation.
For generations, the four nations lived in peace and harmony, but all that changed the day the Fire Nation started a war to conquer the world and in the beginning, they annihilated the Air Nomads.
However, there was one person who could defeat the Fire Nation and save the world.
That person was known as the Avatar, the only human being capable of controlling the four elements.
The Avatar was a being that had existed as long as the benders existed, but he wasn't a single person, since, when he died, his spirit was reincarnated in another person based on an endless cycle of reincarnation.
Avatar Aang, born among the Air Nomads, together with his friends, managed to defeat the Fire Nation and after that, they formed a new nation in which benders and non-benders of all nations could live together in harmony.
Unfortunately, Avatar Aang's time was over, but with that, the time of a new Avatar began, a girl from the Southern Water Tribe named… Korra.
Due to certain things, it was decided that Korra would train in a complex run by the White Lotus, a group dedicated to training and guiding the Avatar.
Many years had passed since the Avatar Korra was discovered and she had bent the firebending, waterbending and earthbending, but she still had the airbending.
Due to the near extinction of the Air Nomads, there were currently only a few Airbenders, one of them being Tenzin, the youngest son of Aang, as well as his children.
He was supposed to train her, but because he is a member of the main council of Republic City, the capital of the nation founded by his father, he had no time to go there and train her, so her training was being postponed for a long time.
Now, Korra can be seen wearing battle armor and throwing a couple of fireballs from her kicks towards a firebender who tried to protect himself by putting his arms in front of him, but ended up knocked down.
Two other firebenders, who were behind Korra, jointly launched a flare at her, engulfing her in fire, but with a circular swing of her arms, Korra dispelled the flames before positioning herself to fight.
One of the firebenders launched a fireball from his fist at her, but she dodged to the side before undoing an incoming fireball with her fist and then dodging another.
Korra charged at the firebender as he did the same and the other firebender moved to the side.
The firebender heading for Korra leapt into the air to launch a wave of fire and a fireball from his foot, but Korra dove down and with her hands flat on the ground, slammed her foot into the firebender's, causing him to stumble and fall to the ground.
Korra got up in time to see the other firebender throw a fireball at her, but she deflected it with her hands as she turned her head slightly to kick the previous firebender who tried to attack her from behind.
She then undid another fireball before launching a pair of fireballs from her fists that knocked down the firebender in front of her.
The one in back threw another pair of fireballs at her, but Korra deflected the first with a mid-jump kick and the second with her arm before throwing a fireball and then quickly turned to deflect a fireball with a side kick before putting her arms up protectively to defend against another fire attack.
With a deep breath, she thrust her arms forward to launch a powerful blast of fire that knocked the firebender to the roof of the area where the White Lotus members were watching the fight.
"She's strong." said Katara, one of the former Team Avatar members and Aang's wife.
"But she lacks restraint." said the leader of the White Lotus.
The last firebender steadily formed a giant fireball with his arm outstretched like a flamethrower as he ran towards Korra who in turn ran towards the firebender with a smile of excitement.
With her arms outstretched, Korra stepped into the fireball and blew it apart like smoke before approaching the firebender, much to his surprise.
She then leapt into the air, using the firebender as a springboard, somersaulted into the air and threw a fireball at him with a kick and then, bringing both fists together, with a small space between them, she launched a powerful blast of fire, knocking down the last firebender.
"Woohoo!" exclaimed Korra excitedly at her victory before approaching where the White Lotus members were standing. "Hey, why all the doom and gloom, people? We should be celebrating! Three elements down, one to go!"
"You're getting ahead of yourself as usual, Korra. We haven't decided if you passed your firebending test yet." said the White Lotus member who was a firebender.
"Ever since you were a little girl, you've excelled at the physical side of bending, but completely ignored the spiritual side. The Avatar must master both." said the White Lotus leader.
"I haven't ignored it, it just doesn't come as easy to me. But that's why I should start training with Tenzin immediately. He's Mister Spiritual." said Korra.
"Do you believe she's ready, Master Katara?" asked the White Lotus leader.
"Yes. If anyone can teach her what she needs to learn, it's Tenzin." said Katara.
"Very well, Korra. It's time for you to begin your airbending training." said the White Lotus leader, much to the Avatar's delight.
"Yes!" exclaimed Korra before jumping up as she did a flip in the air. "Finally!" began Korra before noticing the people present. "I mean, *Crackles* thank you all for believing in me." said Korra politely before walking away with a smile.
When she got far enough away, she ran off with a big smile on her face.
Korra, in her typical attire, arrived at the stables where a good friend of hers was standing.
"Naga, you should have seen it! I kicked some firebender butt, and I passed!" began Korra hugging the polar bear dog's head and petting her. "Tenzin will be here in a few days." said Korra as she got licks on her animal friend's face, much to her amusement.
Later, Korra, wearing a typical Water Tribe coat, was on Naga's back heading for the gates of the complex of the White Lotus.
"Just taking Naga out for a stroll." said Korra to the sentry at the gates who was looking at her with doubt as to whether or not to do so, which caused Korra to look at him with annoyance. "Don't worry, we're not going far."
Shrugging, the sentry opened the gates, allowing Korra a view of the frozen tundra of the South Pole.
From the distance, a pair of White Lotus guards watched Naga begin to run across the field with Korra on top of her.
"Naga, go! That a girl. Go! Go! Go!" said Korra causing Naga to pick up speed as she looked ahead with joy and determination.
Soon after, the two were standing on a hill overlooking the ocean, but, despite the beautiful view, Korra was more focused on the fact that she was soon to receive training to airbending, the last element she had left to be a full Avatar.
She couldn't wait to be able to become as great an Avatar as Aang and perform great feats in order to bring peace and balance to the world.
It was then that Naga began to feel something and turned her head to the side, which Korra noticed.
"What is it, Naga?" asked Korra curiously.
In response, Naga took off running in one direction, taking her rider by surprise.
Naga kept running across the tundra until she slowed down and sniffed the ground.
She kept this up for a while until she stopped.
"Is it that you found something?" asked Korra getting off the polar bear dog's back.
Instead of answering, Naga set about shoving some of the snow away from the spot and it was then that Korra saw something that made her gasp in horror, for in front of them was a girl about their age lying unconscious on the ground.
"Oh, no." began Korra before standing next to her and checking her pulse. "She's still alive, but at this rate she won't last long." said Korra before lifting her up bridal style. "We need to get her to the complex as soon as possible." said Korra climbing onto Naga's back. "Come on, Naga." said Korra, making Naga start running back to the compound without wasting any time.
She felt like she could get in trouble for taking a random stranger to the White Lotus complex, but she wasn't about to let someone die who was in dire need of help.
What kind of Avatar would do that?
Right now, all that mattered was getting her to safety and hoping they could save her in time.
It wasn't long before Korra came through the gates of the complex.
"Katara! Katara!" shouted Korra calling for the best healer in the place, but the first to arrive were the members of the White Lotus.
"Avatar Korra, what happened?" asked the leader of the White Lotus.
"And who is that young lady?" asked a White Lotus member.
"There's no time to explain. She needs help urgently!" said Korra getting off Naga with the girl still in her arms.
"Stand aside. Let me see." began Katara pushing her way through the White Lotus members to get a closer look at the girl. "Her temperature is very low. We must treat her as soon as possible."
Without further thought, Katara and Korra led the girl away, being followed by the White Lotus members.
Later, they went to a hut full of small pools filled with water where they put the girl in one of them.
After that, Katara proceeded to move her arms in a circular motion, making the water in the pool glow, intending to use her healing abilities to treat the girl.
Meanwhile, Korra was having a conversation with the members of the White Lotus, who didn't seem happy about what she did.
"Do you realize what you've done?" asked the leader of the White Lotus.
"Uh… Saving her life?" asked Korra.
"You brought a stranger into the White Lotus complex." said a White Lotus member.
"And what did you want me to do? Let her die? Tell me, what kind of Avatar would I be if I did that?" asked Korra scolding the White Lotus members for scolding her for doing something good.
That made the White Lotus members start to feel bad about it, as it raised a good point.
"Well, I admit you're right about that, but we still don't know who she is." said a White Lotus member.
"I guess we'll have to wait for answers." said the White Lotus leader.
After that, Korra approached Katara to check on the girl's condition.
"How is she doing?" asked Korra.
"I was able to get her temperature stabilized. Now all that's left is to wait for her to wake up." said Katara.
Korra was relieved to know that she would recover, but she kept wondering who this girl really was.
All she could do was wait.
Darkness surrounded her field of vision again.
"Hello? Is anyone there?" asked the girl looking around.
It was then that she sensed that there was something there, something… familiar.
"W-Who's there? Do you know who I am? Please, I need to know." said the girl pleading for answers.
However, all she received was silence.
Unlike before, instead of feeling the cold touch of snow, she felt something comfortable under her and something warm covering her.
Opening her eyes, the first thing she saw was the roof of some structure and looking down at herself, she was surprised to see that she was in a bed with a blanket covering her.
"You finally wake up."
Turning her head quickly, she saw a brown-skinned teenage girl with three braids sitting in a chair next to her bed.
"I'm glad you did." said Korra with a smile.
The girl sat on her bed, causing the blanket to fall off her and reveal that she had other clothes more in keeping with the cold weather.
"W-Where am I?" asked the girl.
"You're at the White Lotus complex. I found you lying in the snow and brought you here." said Korra.
"R-Really? T-Thank you so much." said the girl even though she didn't know where exactly she was.
"You're welcome. Wait here, I'll go tell Katara." said Korra getting up from her chair to leave the room for a moment.
The girl was relieved to know that she had managed to find a safer environment than that frozen tundra she woke up in, even if it had happened in a way she hadn't imagined.
She hoped that the people who saved her could help her with her questions, especially the most important one.
Soon after, Korra returned with Katara, as did the members of the White Lotus, though the latter weren't coming because Korra wanted them to.
Katara approached the girl with a friendly smile.
"How are you feeling?" asked Katara.
"Quite a bit better." said the girl.
Katara put her hand on her forehead to measure her temperature.
"You seem to be recovering. I'm glad. If Korra had taken longer to bring you in, I'm afraid I wouldn't have been able to heal you." said Katara.
"Wow. Well, anyway, thanks for helping me." said the girl.
"You're welcome." said Katara.
"All right. Now tell us, who are you?" asked the White Lotus leader with an authoritative tone that made the girl nervous.
"Hey, don't talk to her like that. She just woke up." began Korra looking at them with a frown before looking at the girl with a kind smile. "I feel sorry for them. Can you at least tell us your name?"
Despite being nervous about the White Lotus members, the Avatar's presence managed to calm her down a bit.
"I am… Masane. Masane Amaha." said the girl introducing herself.
"Masane, huh? My name is Korra. Tell me, how did you come to end up in the middle of the South Pole?" asked Korra.
"I…" began Masane trying to remember, but again… nothing. "I… I don't remember. I don't remember anything." said Masane to the surprise of those present.
"You don't remember anything?" asked Korra.
"No. All I remember is waking up in the middle of that place and then passing out and waking up here. Other than that and my name, I don't remember anything else." said Masane.
While the White Lotus members looked at her with slight suspicion, Korra and Katara looked at her with pity, as not remembering anything must have been horrible.
"Well, don't worry. You'll be safe here." said Korra with a smile.
"Thank you." said Masane with a smile.
"For the time being, it would be best if you stay in bed resting a little longer and make sure you wrap up warm. I'll ask them to bring something warm to eat." said Katara.
"I appreciate it." said Masane.
With everything finished, Korra, Katara and the others left the room, leaving Masane alone, who lay down on the bed as she covered herself with the blanket.
She may not really remember anything except for her name, but she had a feeling that with these people, especially Korra, she might find the answers she was looking for.
Meanwhile, Korra and Katara were in a meeting with the White Lotus members to discuss an important matter, Masane and the conclusion was something the Avatar didn't like.
"Send her away?!" asked Korra surprised by the White Lotus' decision. "You can't do that!"
"Avatar Korra, we don't know who she really is. We don't even know if it's true that she doesn't remember anything." said the White Lotus leader.
"Well, I believe her!" said Korra.
"She's right. I could see it in her eyes. She seems to be suffering from amnesia." said Katara.
"If it was amnesia, then she wouldn't remember her full name." said a White Lotus member.
"It's called selective memory and sometimes it allows you to remember little things. On this occasion, her name." said Katara.
"Mmm. Okay. The amnesia thing may be true. In that case, it would be best to send her to a specialized center for such cases and have them take care of her." said the White Lotus leader.
"No. There has to be another way." said Korra not wanting that fate for Masane.
"Well, if you have another suggestion, we are open to it." said a White Lotus member.
Korra began to urgently think of a way for Masane not to be taken away.
It was then that an idea occurred to her.
"Wait, what if I take care of her? I could help her remember things. Besides, we're the same age." said Korra hoping that would do the trick.
"I agree with her. Moving her to another facility now could be detrimental to her physical and mental health. As a doctor, I would recommend that she stay here with Korra." said Katara in support of the Avatar.
The White Lotus members looked at each other, visually debating the Avatar's suggestion.
After a while, they came to a decision.
"All right, Avatar Korra. She can stay, but you will be the one responsible for her actions and behavior, understood?" asked the White Lotus leader.
"Thank you. I appreciate it." began Korra bowing in thanks before getting up. "If you'll excuse me." said Korra before leaving.
By the time she left the room, Korra jumped with happiness that she had won another White Lotus debate in a single day.
She had done it before, but after what happened the first time, she knew better than to get carried away again.
Now that everything was settled, she set off to tell her the good news.
While Korra was in her meeting with the White Lotus, one of the local servants came to Masane's room with a bowl of hot soup.
With a puff per spoonful due to how hot it was, Masane ate the soup with gusto due to the good taste, feeling better than before.
TOC-TOC
Suddenly, a couple of knocks were heard at the door.
"Who is it?" asked Masane.
"It's me, Korra. May I come in?" asked Korra from the other side.
"Sure. Come in." said Masane, allowing the Avatar to enter.
"How are you feeling?" asked Korra.
"Much better now." said Masane.
"Glad to hear it. Anyway, I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that the White Lotus people wanted to send you to a facility far away from here." said Korra.
"What?" asked Masane surprised and scared.
"But… The good news is that I convinced them to keep you here. Under my care, of course." said Korra.
"Really? Thank you so much for all you do for me. I hope I can repay you someday." said Masane with a smile.
"That won't be necessary. All that matters is that you make a full recovery and that includes getting your memories back." said Korra with a smile.
"Yes." said Masane.
Apparently, Masane's hunch was right, as now that he had Korra by her side, her life could change for the better.
Soon after, with Masane recovered enough to get up and walk, she and Korra decided to walk around the cleared grounds of the complex for a bit.
Masane had been given some typical Water Tribes clothing similar to Korra's, but at the moment, she found herself adjusting it anyway.
"What's the matter? Are you uncomfortable in those clothes?" asked Korra.
"No. It's not that. It's just… it's a little tight on my chest." said Masane.
Korra looked down at Masane's chest and had to admit it was bigger than she thought, even bigger than her own.
"Why do I feel defeated?" asked Korra confused not realizing she brought a hand to her chest.
Suddenly, the two heard footsteps heading towards them at high speed and before anyone could ask, Naga lunged at Masane and knocked her to the ground, causing her to let out a startled yelp.
Korra was about to freak out thinking that her animal friend was attacking her, but then, Masane went from screaming to laughing due to Naga licking her face, which made her laugh a little while reassuring Korra.
"Haha. Stop. Stop. You're tickling me. Haha." said Masane laughing due to the animal's licks.
Korra giggled a little before pulling the animal away from the girl.
"Masane, this is Naga. Naga, this is Masane Amaha." said Korra.
"Aw. Aren't you a cuddly little thing? Who's a cuddly little thing?" asked Masane petting the head of the polar bear dog, who responded with a lick that made her giggle.
"So, you don't remember anything at all? About whether you have family or where you're from…? Nothing?" asked Korra getting back to the main topic.
"No. I wish I could, but all I find in my mind is a void and… I'm scared I can't fill it." said Masane with her head down.
"Hey. Easy." began Korra placing her hand on her shoulder, causing her to lift her head. "I'm sure, someday, you'll get your memories back. And if not, well, you can always fill that void in your mind with new memories." said Korra trying to be positive.
"Yeah, you're right." began Masane with a smile. "Anyway, where exactly are we? You said it was a White Lotus complex, but what exactly is that?"
"Oh, right. I guess, not remembering anything, you wouldn't know what's going on in the world. Well, let me fill the void in your mind a little. The White Lotus is a group that is dedicated to helping the Avatar be able to bend the four elements." said Korra.
"Avatar?" asked Masane with an arched eyebrow.
With a flick of her foot, she used earthbending to erect a couple of rocks from the ground that they used as chairs.
Needless to say, Masane was surprised by this and hoped her new friend could explain it to her.
"You see. There are normal people, but there are also special people called benders. Those benders have the ability to bend one of the four elements. Air, water, earth and fire." began Korra with the explanation.
"Wow. Wait, you think I'm one of those benders?" asked Masane.
"Mmm. Good question. Let's try it. Close your eyes and concentrate. Try to feel the environment around you and breathe deeply." said Korra using the knowledge she gained during her teachings.
Masane closed her eyes and as Korra asked, she concentrated deeply.
She tried to find something inside her that would tell her what a bender was and what kind she was.
Even though her eyes were closed, she felt like she was looking down a very dark tunnel that went deep inside her.
She kept walking down that tunnel until…
"No. Nothing." began Masane, opening her eyes. "I don't feel anything. Maybe it's not one of those benders."
"Well, that's all right. The important thing is that we already know something about you." began Korra with a smile that Masane returned, as it really was a step towards the goal of getting his memories back. "Anyway, unlike normal benders, I'm more special."
"Why is that?" asked Masane.
"Because I'm the Avatar." said Korra.
"You said that before. What is it?" asked Masane curiously.
"The Avatar is the only one who can bend the four elements and bring balance to the world." said Korra.
"Wow. So you're an amazing person!" said Masane with stars in her eyes.
"Thank you, although, if I'm being honest, I'm still not quite the Avatar." said Korra.
"What do you mean?" asked Masane confused.
"At the moment, I can waterbend, earthbend and firebend, but I have yet to airbend." said Korra.
"Don't you have someone who can teach you?" asked Masane.
"Yes, but he's always busy with his political duties in Republic City, so he doesn't have time to come here and train me." said Korra crossing her arms in annoyance.
"Republic City?" asked Masane.
"It is the capital of the United Nations. It was founded by Avatar Aang and his friends for the purpose of creating a place where benders and non-benders from all over would live together." said Korra.
"Wait, I thought you were the Avatar." said Masane.
"And I am, but there were others before me. The thing is, when one Avatar dies, another is reincarnated in his place. When Avatar Aang died, I took his place as Avatar." said Korra.
"Amazing." began Masane impressed by the Avatar's powers and abilities. "So how can you be the Avatar if you can't airbend?"
"Oh, don't worry about that. This morning they decided that Tenzin would come here and begin my airbending training. Once I do that, I can go out into the world and do my duty." said Korra standing up with her fists on her hips.
"I'm sure you'll make a great Avatar." said Masane with a smile.
"Thank you." said Korra with a smile.
It had been a couple of days since then.
In that time, Korra had been helping Masane learn all about the world, like what nations there were, a bit of history and the odd thing or two.
They were hoping that some of that might help her recover some memories, but they were getting nowhere, much to Masane's sadness, but Korra always managed to cheer her up, making the girl enjoy the Avatar's company more.
Fortunately, they did manage to find out something about her and that was when she wanted to help in the kitchen in thanks for letting her stay.
What they found out was that she was very clumsy in the kitchen, as sometimes, whatever she cooked would burn to the point where they needed a fire or waterbender and once she accidentally caused an explosion.
As a result, she was banned from using the complex's kitchen.
Because of Korra's situation with regard to the White Lotus, the only times Korra and Masane could leave the complex was when they went for a ride on Naga's back.
On occasion, Korra would show Masane her skills in bending the elements and she would always give her a loud round of applause and words of congratulations and encouragement.
Needless to say, some of them made Korra blush slightly.
The day that Korra had waited so long for had finally arrived, the day Tenzin would arrive to teach Korra the airbending, the last element she had yet to bend to be a complete Avatar.
In the middle of the sunset, Korra, Masane and Katara stood at the gates of the complex awaiting the arrival of the airbender.
They were quiet for quite a while until Masane noticed something in the sky.
"Hey. I see something." said Masane pointing in the sky, where a flying bison was seen descending from the sky flying towards the complex.
"It's Tenzin's flying bison. He's really come." said Korra excited to finally be able to complete her training.
Masane was happy to see that her friend was about to fulfill her dream of becoming an Avatar like her predecessor was.
Although they were still without answers about herself, she was glad to see her friend happy.
The three of them stood waiting for the bison to land and, despite the height at which the flying animal was, someone could be heard talking on its back.
"Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? It looks like we're there. I know it, this is very familiar! Are we here yet? Are we here yet? Ooh, please tell me we're here!" said a childish voice as the bison landed on the ground.
"Yes, Ikki, as I've been telling you for the last fifteen minutes, we are, finally, here." said Tenzin in an exhausted voice as a child bit his head like a coconut.
At the news, two girls on the back of the flying bison created an air scooter to glide along the bison's tail as Katara approached her family.
When the girls reached the end of the tail, they undid the scooter.
"Hello, Mother. I can't tell you how happy I am to see you." began Tenzin very exhausted as the boy tugged on his ears and the girls stood beside him. "Please, help me." pleaded Tenzin as he bent down, allowing his mother to grab his son.
Katara laughed at her son's plight.
"Unhand me, strange woman!" said Meelo jerking to escape his grandmother's grip.
"That's your grandmother, Meelo." said Tenzin.
Meelo broke free from Katara's grip, stepped over her leaning on her head and landed behind her before running back to her father.
"It's so good to see all of you." said Katara happy to see her grandchildren.
"Gran Gran, I've been reading all about your old adventures. I've been dying to ask you: What happened to Zuko's mom?" said Jinora.
"Well, Jinora, it's an incredible tale…" began Katara before suddenly the other girl stood in front of her.
"Gran Gran, you look old. How old are you? And why is it so cold in the South Pole? Can we make a campfire, and all huddle around it, and tell scary stories, and make snowmen? And then can you make the snowmen move with waterbending and chase us? Wouldn't that be fuuun? Huh? Wouldn't it?" asked Ikki as she jumped up and down, much to her older sister's annoyance as Tenzin approached the bison to help his pregnant wife.
"Pema, let me help you. Careful now, careful." said Tenzin holding his wife's hand, but she pushed her away soon after.
"Stop doting on me. I'm not helpless, I'm just pregnant." Pema said looking at her swollen belly.
Katara approached her daughter-in-law and the two shared a hug.
"The baby's strong." began Katara with a hand on Pema's belly. "I see another airbender in your future." said Katara causing an expression of annoyance and weariness to form on the woman's face.
"All I want is one child like me, a nice non-bender, who doesn't blast wind in my face every five seconds." said Pema before turning an annoyed look to the side.
"Mommy, look." said Meelo who was inside a pile of snow and whose two sisters were on either side playing with the snow. Soon after, Meelo popped the pile of snow with airbending as he spun in the air before landing. "I'm a snowbender!" exclaimed Meelo with a smile while Pema still had the same tired and annoyed look with bits of snow on her which she then shook her head off.
"Were Tenzin and his siblings this crazy when they were kids?" asked Pema to Katara.
"Kya and Bumi certainly were, but Tenzin has always been… rather serious." said Katara.
"Mother, please." began Tenzin not wanting to hear stories of his childhood at the moment before turning his gaze to a certain someone. "Korra?" asked Tenzin cheerfully, causing Korra to approach him with a smile as the airbender put his hands on her shoulders. "Look at you, so big and strong. You've grown into quite the young Avatar."
It was then that he noticed the other girl.
"And who are you, if I may ask?" asked Tenzin.
"Master Tenzin, this is Masane Amaha. I found her lying in the snow when I was walking with Naga and brought her to the complex." said Korra introducing the girl to the airbender.
Tenzin was a little confused by the fact that she found her lying in the snow in the middle of nowhere.
"That's right, Korra found her and if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be here." said Katara confirming the facts.
At that moment, Ikki stood in front of Masane.
"She found you in the middle of the snow? What were you doing there? Were you taking a nap? Are you a bender or a non-bender? Why do you have them bigger than my mother?" asked Ikki innocently, though the last question made her mother blush with embarrassment as she patted her face at her youngest daughter's rude question.
Korra covered her hands with her mouth trying to contain her laughter while Tenzin was surprised by it before looking away from the girl's assets.
Meanwhile, Masane stared at the middle daughter with a blank expression.
She didn't know why, but something about her was familiar and the worst part was that she couldn't remember why.
"Masane? Are you okay?" asked Korra, snapping her out of her state.
"Huh? Oh, I'm so sorry. I don't know what came over me." said Masane bowing apologetically.
Tenzin was a bit confused by that, but fortunately, his mother came with answers.
"You see, the poor girl suffers from amnesia, so she doesn't remember anything except for her name." said Katara surprising her son.
"I see. I am sorry for your situation." said Tenzin.
"Don't worry, Master Tenzin. Even if I don't remember anything, I'm happy to have Korra by my side to help me as much as possible." said Masane making the Avatar smile.
After that, Korra focused on the previous topic.
"Master Tenzin, I'm so glad you're here. I can't wait to get started." said Korra eagerly.
"Yes, well…" began Tenzin not knowing what to say, but from the look on his face, it wasn't good.
"You're going to have to tell her sooner or later." said Pema knowing what he had to say.
"But tell me what?" asked Korra with slight concern.
Katara seemed the only one who knew what was going on.
"You're not staying, are you?" asked Katara with slight sadness.
Tenzin let out a sad sigh.
"I'm afraid not. We're only visiting for the night. Then I have to return to Republic City." said Tenzin.
"But… no, you're supposed to move here. You're supposed to teach me." said Korra trying to convince the airbender, but to no avail.
"Please, Master Tenzin, can't you really stay?" asked Masane trying to help her friend.
"I'm sorry, Korra. Your airbending training is going to have to wait." said Tenzin with his hands on the Avatar's shoulders to make her understand the situation.
That same evening, Korra, Masane, Tenzin and some members of the White Lotus were at a table having dinner.
"So, how long until you're ready to teach me airbending? A week? A month?" asked Korra.
"It could be much longer." said Tenzin.
"I don't understand. Why are you making me wait?" asked Korra.
"I have a responsibility to Republic City. I am one of its leaders, and the situation there is very unstable right now." said Tenzin.
"W-Well, I guess that's a good reason." said Masane.
"But you also have a responsibility to teach me. Believe me, I'd be happy to find another airbending master, but you're the only one. We're stuck with each other." said Korra.
"I wish there were another way." said Tenzin.
"Uh… Can I say something?" asked Masane getting the attention of the others, so she continued. "If Tenzin really can't leave Republic City because of his business, what if Korra goes with him?"
"That's… That's right! That way, I can get training while you're off on your political duties. It's perfect!" said Korra in complete agreement with her friend's idea.
"Absolutely not! The city is far too dangerous. Avatar Aang tasked us with keeping you safe while you mastered the four elements." said the leader of the White Lotus.
"I get that, but I don't think keeping me locked up in this compound like a prisoner is what he had in mind." said Korra.
"She's right. It doesn't seem right, if not cruel." said Masane.
"That's none of your business." said the White Lotus leader, making the girl nervous.
"Hey, don't talk to her like that! She's just trying to help!" said Korra defending her friend.
"I know this is difficult to accept, but it's not the right time for you to come to the city." said Tenzin.
"Whatever." said Korra getting up and leaving, being followed by Masane, leaving the two elders let out a deep sigh at the Avatar's situation.
Soon after, Korra and Masane was walking through the halls of the complex, with the Avatar very frustrated at the outcome of the situation.
"Grrr. I don't get it! All my life I've done what I've been asked to do and all I get is this!" said Korra.
"I'm sorry. I wish I had done something else." said Masane.
"You don't have to apologize. You brought up a good idea, but I see they are too stubborn to think properly." said Korra.
"I don't understand. From what you told me about Aang, he was free to travel and learn from others, but you're left locked up here like you're a collector's item." said Masane.
"First of all, it was wartime and the White Lotus had to remain hidden back then. Secondly, I don't know why I'm here. At first, I lived with my parents, but for some reason, I was sent here never to leave." said Korra.
"You never knew the reason?" asked Masane.
"The only thing they would tell me about it was that it was for my safety. I'm the Avatar, not a crystal figure." said Korra.
"And you haven't seen your parents since?" asked Masane.
"Of course I have. They usually visit me from time to time or I visit them thanks to Katara." began Korra before looking out a window. "Other than that, I don't know anyone else outside these walls. Other than Katara and Naga, I've always felt lonely in this place."
Masane felt sorry for her friend.
She may have been the Avatar, probably the most powerful person on the planet, but deep down she was just a girl who had grown up isolated from everything and everyone, which caused her to have no friends her own age.
After all she did for her, she wasn't going to let her feel that way anymore.
So, with a serious expression, she walked over to her and gave her a hug, much to the Avatar's surprise.
"You are no longer alone. You have me by your side now." began Masane, surprising the Avatar. "Those old men in the White Lotus may treat you like this, but I will always be there for you. No matter what."
That touched Korra and she gave him a smile before hugging him back.
"Thank you, Masane. I feel better." said Korra.
"That's what friends are for." said Masane with a smile.
The two stayed like that for a while until they parted and went to their rooms to sleep for the rest of the night.
The next morning, Katara was saying goodbye to her family who were on the back of the flying bison preparing for takeoff.
"Goodbye, Gran Gran!" said Ikki.
"Oogi, yip-yip!" said Tenzin.
At the command, the flying bison flew high and away, leaving Katara wiping her eyes in sadness.
"Katara."
Katara turned to see Masane approaching her.
"Have you seen Korra?" asked Masane.
"She went for a walk with Naga, but she hasn't come back yet." said Katara.
"I feel terrible for her. I wish there was something else I could do." said Masane before she felt a hand on her shoulder and looked up to see Katara giving her a smile.
"You already do so much for her by standing by her side. I'm confident she'll pull through and I'm sure you'll be by her side supporting her like a good friend." said Katara, making the girl smile.
Meanwhile, Korra was on Naga's back with her resting on the edge of a ledge in the middle of the tundra.
Suddenly, the two turned their heads to the side to see Oogi and his passengers ride past them.
They followed them with their eyes until they were lost on the horizon.
Korra was depressed, just when she had mastered waterbending, earthbending and firebending, she thought she could complete her training by learning airbending under Tenzin's tutelage.
But what happened?
That due to his political duties, he wasn't going to be able to train her right away and the worst part was that he didn't know when he could start.
Hell, she was beginning to think that by the time she started her training, she would be the same age as Katara.
No.
No more waiting.
Aang didn't have to wait years to be the Avatar (except for the 100 years he stayed frozen), so she wasn't going to wait to be the Avatar anymore.
If Tenzin and the White Lotus members weren't going to do anything to help her, she will have to help herself even if the way to do it wasn't legally correct.
Later, in the middle of the night, Korra found herself entering the stables and taking Naga's saddle, but as she was placing the saddle…
"Are you going to leave without telling me?" asked a voice that startled Korra as she turned, only to calm down when she saw that it was Masane, with her first outfit and a bag over her shoulder. "Did you think I would just accept it? You're horrible." said Masane with a pout.
"I'm sorry, Masane, but I'm tired of standing here doing nothing. I'm going to Republic City and have Tenzin train me." said Korra.
"I figured as much, that's why I'm going with you." said Masane.
"What? Really?" asked Korra.
"I already told you, Korra. You won't be alone anymore and there's no way I'm letting you do this alone too. I told you I'd be supporting you and that's what I plan to do." said Masane with determination.
Korra couldn't help but smile at her friend's words.
"Thank you, Masane. I appreciate it." said Korra with a smile that Masane returned.
The two set about getting ready to leave when…
"Nice night for an escape, isn't it?" at the new voice, Korra and Masane turned their heads with an expression of fear and concern as they saw Katara standing in the doorway.
"I have to leave. I have to find my own path as the Avatar." said Korra approaching Katara.
"I know you do." began Katara with a sweet smile, causing Korra and Masane to smile as well seeing that the waterbender master agreed with the Avatar. "Aang's time has passed. My brother and many of my friends are gone. It's time for you and your generation to take over the responsibility of keeping peace and balance in the world. And I think you're going to be a great Avatar." said Katara with a proud smile.
"Thank you." said Korra hugging the waterbender.
After the hug, Katara turned her gaze to the other girl.
"Masane, whether or not you get your memories back, I trust you will help Korra on her journey." said Katara.
"I will, Katara. I promise." said Masane hugging the waterbender.
"Goodbye to both of you." said Katara.
Quite a distance away from the White Lotus complex, a hole formed in the middle of the snow and out through it came Korra, Masane and Naga.
After Naga shook the snow off, Korra and Masane climbed onto her back, with Masane behind Korra and proceeded to ride away from there.
Soon after, Korra was hugging her parents in front of their house while Masane waited by Naga's side.
"Mom, Dad. I'll miss you." said Korra undoing the hug.
"We love you so much." said Senna.
Seeing that, Masane couldn't help but feel something inside her heart, something she could only classify as grief, but she didn't know what it meant, as she couldn't remember if she had parents or any family members who would surely be worried about her.
She could only hope and pray that, at some point, her answers would finally come, but until then, she would be accompanying her friend on her adventure.
Korra left quickly to keep the situation from becoming sadder than it was.
She climbed onto Naga's back along with Masane and they rode off across the snowy field.
Soon they reached the dock and with stealth and speed, they sneaked inside a ship bound for Republic City.
Hours had passed since they set sail and Korra, Masane and Naga remained hidden among some crates in the cargo area to hide from the crew.
With the sun rising, the ship finally arrived at its destination, Republic City.
At the time, the three stowaways were sleeping peacefully until Korra began to open her eyes and when she heard the noise outside she knew they had reached their destination.
"Masane, Naga!" said Korra waking her friend and the polar bear dog.
"W-What's wrong? Are we there yet?" asked Masane rubbing his eyes.
"You bet. It's time to disembark." said Korra with a smile.
Soon after, the door to the ship's warehouse opened, allowing the sun's rays in and the three quickly ducked out of sight as they saw several men enter.
As those men were carrying the packages, Korra and Masane, who were on Naga's back, took advantage of that to run out of the place.
"Thanks for the ride!" said Korra to a worker as she exited the ship, startling the handlers.
"Sorry for the inconvenience!" said Masane as they walked away.
Soon after, Korra and Masane stopped so they could take in the huge city before their eyes and, needless to say, they were impressed.
"Wow, look at this place, Masane. I've never seen so many Satomobiles." said Korra.
"Yes, I had read about them, but I didn't expect to see anything like this. This place looks amazing." said Masane.
"You're right." said Korra before focusing her look of amazement on the statue of the former Avatar.
"Is that Avatar Aang? That's awesome." said Masane.
"I know and I hope to become just like him." said Korra.
"I'm sure you will be. I even think they'll go so far as to make a statue in your honor just like him." said Masane with a smile.
"Hehe. Well, I don't expect that much either." began Korra with a smile before turning. her gaze to a nearby island. "Air Temple Island. That's where Tenzin lives."
"Do you think he'll agree to train you regardless?" asked Masane.
"There's no harm in trying." began Korra determinedly. before looking back at her mount. " You ready for a little swim, girl?"
But then, Naga began to sniff something in the distance.
"Hehe. Looks like someone's gotten hungry from the long ride." began Masane before a growl came from both her stomach and the Avatar's. "And she's not the only one."
"Okay, okay! Food first, then air temple!" said Korra before Naga started running in another direction, but unfortunately they were going in the middle of a road.
"Watch out, Naga! Look out!" shouted Korra.
"Straight ahead!" shouted Masane just as they passed near a satomobile that slid down the road until it collided with another one. "Sorry!"
Naga went from running on the road to running through the people in the area.
"Whoops, sorry about that. Excuse us. Coming through. Heads up." said Korra as they strolled past complaining passersby.
"Eh, sorry, we're new in town." said Masane, who had grabbed onto Korra to keep from falling.
Naga crouched down to follow the trail until she came to a stall selling food.
As soon as she saw what they were serving, Naga began to gasp with her tongue lolling out, wanting to taste the food.
"Naga, wait." said Korra making Naga groan in sadness.
"Take it easy, precious. We'll have something to eat soon." said Masane petting the polar bear dog before she and the Avatar got off and stood in front of the attendant.
"We'll take one of everything, please." said Korra picking up a stick wrapped in meat.
"That will be twenty yuans." said the stall attendant.
Korra's eyes widened as she hadn't thought of that and looked at Masane for help, but she shook her head quickly in a sign that she didn't have any.
"Uh… We don't have any money?" said Korra, causing the attendant to get angry and snatch the meaty stick from her.
"Then what good are you to me?" asked the manager angrily.
Disappointed, Korra and Masane walked away and stood next to Naga.
"I'm sorry, Naga. We couldn't get anything." said Masane petting her to comfort her.
"But don't worry. The city is huge. I'm sure we'll find somewhere where there will be something to eat." said Korra as the three of them walked away.
Later, Korra and Masane were on the banks of a river, with Korra heating 3 fish strung on a stick with her firebending while Naga rummaged in the river for more fish.
They happened to be in a huge park in the middle of the city.
Once she warmed up the fish, she gave one to Masane.
That may not have been exactly the right thing to do, but they were starving and had no money to buy anything, so they had no choice but to come to that, although she had to admit that the smell of the cooked fish was tasty.
She was about to eat her fish when suddenly, next to her, through some bushes, a strange man in dirty clothes peeked out.
They both noticed the presence of the wanderer and were a bit startled by it.
"Uh, say, think I can I get one of them tasty-smelling fishies?" asked Gommu
"Oh. Uh. Yeah, sure." said Masane agreeing to share.
Gommu walked over to her, picked up a stick with a fish strung on it and started eating it.
"So, do you… live in that bush?" asked Korra curiously.
"Yes, presently that is what I do call home. Took me a while to procure a bush that beauteous. This park is quite popular with all the vagabonds." said Gommu.
"So there are a lot of you out here?" asked Korra.
"But I thought everyone in this city was 'living it up'." said Masane, making Gommu laugh.
"Hey, you've got a lot to learn, newcomers. Welcome to Republic City." said Gommu.
Korra and Masane looked at each other after what the wanderer said when the sound of a whistle reached their ears.
The two girls turned their heads to the side to see a guard near where they stood.
"Hey, you! Stop! You can't fish here!" said a guard running towards them.
"You best skedaddle!" said Gommu before turning back to his bush.
With a hiss, Korra called to Naga and she and Masane jumped on her back to flee the scene.
"Sorry!" said Masane as they rode away.
The guard tried to chase after them, but tired and stopped to catch his breath.
Behind him Gommu could be seen peeking out from his bush to say goodbye.
Soon after, Korra and Masane were strolling through the park on Naga's back when suddenly they heard a sound that caught their attention and they approached the source to see a table in front of a poster of a masked man and, on the table, there was a man speaking through a megaphone.
"Are you tired of living under the tyranny of benders? Then join the Equalists! For too long, the bending elite of this city have forced non-benders to live as lower-class citizens. Join Amon, and together we will tear down the bending establishment." said the protester.
"What are you talking about? Bending is the coolest thing in the world." said Korra in defense.
"Oh yeah? Let me guess: you and your friend are a bender." said the protester.
"Well, I'm not, but she is." said Masane as Korra nodded in agreement.
"I see. Then I bet you'd just love to knock me off this platform with some waterbending, huh?" asked the demonstrator trying to turn the conversation in his favor.
"I'm seriously thinking about it." said Korra crossing her arms.
"This is what's wrong with this city! Benders like this girl only use their power to oppress us as her friend!" said the protester, getting the people who were listening to him to groan at Korra, who looked confused.
"What? But I don't feel oppressed." said Masane.
"Exactly. I'm not oppressing anyone! You're… you're oppressing yourselves!" said Korra trying to excuse herself.
"That didn't even make sense. " said the protester as the three of them walked away from the spot.
"You know she's right, right?" asked Masane.
"What did you want me to do? I didn't have anything suitable for that moment." said Korra trying to defend herself.
Later, Korra and Masane were walking alongside Naga through the streets of the city.
"It's getting late. I think we should go to Air Temple Island now." said Masane.
"Yeah, you're right." said Korra before approaching a couple of people.
"Excuse me, I think we're lost. How do I get to Air Temple Island from here?" asked Korra.
"Just head down this street." began an older lady, who was standing next to a man, when suddenly, across the corner, a red satomobile appeared. "You should get moving, young ladies. It isn't safe." said the older lady running away in fright, much to the confusion of the Avatar and her friend.
The red satomobile stopped and out of it came three men who approached a man who was cleaning a phonograph.
"Mr. Chung, please tell me that you have my money, or else I can't guarantee I can protect your fine establishment." said one of the men wearing a hat, who looked like the leader, while another man behind him created a flame from his palm to emphasize what his boss was saying, much to the horror of the man with the phonograph.
"I'm sorry, business has been slow. Please, take one of my phonographs." said Mr. Chang approaching them to offer him the phonograph he was cleaning earlier.
The firebender lifted his leg with a small flame on the sole of his foot and as he lowered his leg he struck the flame against the phonograph, setting it on fire in the process and scaring the master of the store so much that he fell sitting on the floor.
"My friend here is not a music lover. Give me the money, or else…" began the leader with the typical mobster threat when…
"Or else what, hoodlum?" the three mobsters turned around to see Korra standing behind them with a cocky grin and hands on her hips.
"K-Korra?" asked Masane surprised by her friend's act before moving closer. "I-I don't think it's a good idea to get involved." whispered Masane covering her mouth with her hand.
"I'm not going to let them hurt that poor man. You relax, I've got it under control." whispered Korra covering her mouth with the back of her hand as she gave him a thumbs up and a confident smile.
That was enough to make Masane nod at her with a smile, for if she had to be honest, she would have done the same if she were in her place.
The three mobsters looked at each other in confusion before bursting out laughing.
"Since you're obviously fresh off the boat, let me explain a couple things. You're in Triple Threat Triad territory, and we're about to put you, in the hospital." said the leader.
"You're the only ones who are gonna need a hospital and, for your sake…" began Korra before slamming her fist into her palm. "I hope there's one nearby."
"Who did you think you are?" asked the leader starting to get pissed off along with his two flunkies.
"Why don't you go over and find out?" asked Korra with a toothy grin and a narrowed gaze as she cracked her knuckles.
Masane had to admit that she was excited to see Korra fight, as, until now, she had only seen her use her powers for demonstration and display purposes.
The leader's eye twitched a bit before he reached into his jacket and threw a water bullet that Korra caught with her hand before throwing it back at its owner, hitting the head and freezing it, encasing it in a block of ice.
The leader staggered a bit towards her before Korra kicked him aside, sending him crashing into the red satomobile, causing the ice on the head to shatter and freeing him, albeit unconscious.
The other two men were shocked to see their boss knocked down.
The larger of them, an earthbender, turned to Korra with a scowl and lunged toward her with a shout as he prepared to make a bending attack, but Korra was quicker and raised a stone platform beneath him that launched him upward.
"What just happened?" asked the older woman from before.
"Did she just earthbend?" asked the clothesline man next to her, who was very surprised.
The earthbender fell onto a rope which pushed him against a sign, then fell onto a tent pergola which threw him against a hanging cloth which he tried to grab onto, but the cloth broke and he ended up falling onto a box full of fruit before falling to the ground knocked down.
The last of them, horrified to see the larger one knocked down easily, screamed in desperation as he threw a flare at Korra, but she leapt out of the fire undoing the attack in the process before grabbing her opponent's hands with her own.
"Can she waterbend, earthbend and firebend, too?" asked the older lady.
"Could she be?" asked the man beginning to understand who this girl was.
"Yes, she is. Come on, Korra!" said Masane with a smile as she cheered her friend on.
With her hands still gripping the evil man's hands, Korra began to spin, taking the man with her and with a groan of effort, threw the man into a watch store, breaking the glass of the display window in the process.
Korra approached the downed man with a small chuckle between her teeth.
"Got an idea about who I am now, chumps?" asked Korra arrogantly.
"Woohoo! Way to go, Korra!" exclaimed Masane with glee.
Suddenly, the two heard an engine noise and turned to the side before turning away from the red satomobile that quickly arrived on the scene.
"Come on!" said the earthbender as the red satomobile passed by the watch store just as the firebender got up, so he started running to catch up with them.
In the end, the earthbender, erected a platform underneath him, throwing him into the back of the vehicle as he continued on his way.
Seeing the bad guys running away, Korra didn't hesitate to run after them.
"You're not getting away!" shouted Korra before using earthbending to send a jolt of earth that hit the satomobile and launched it into the air, but it landed on its feet, though the shock of that caused them to steer the satomobile directly into another tent.
Korra, Masane and Naga arrived at the crash site to see the three mobsters fall from the toppled vehicle.
Before anyone said anything, they began to hear sirens.
They looked both ways before looking up to see a blimp above them.
"Police! Freeze where you are!" said a voice from the blimp.
The doors of the blimp opened and from them, three men in uniform jumped out.
In mid-fall, they threw, from their sleeves, metal ropes that dug into the walls of the street and then used them to slow their fall, allowing them to land softly.
"Unbelievable." said Masane impressed by the cops' acrobatic skills.
"Cool! Metalbenders!" said Korra.
When a fourth metalbender landed altogether, they retracted the metal ropes back to their original place.
"We caught the bad guys for you, officers." said Korra pointing to the three mobsters staggering and groaning out of the tent.
"Arrest them!" said Sergeant Saikhan as his men took a few steps forward and then threw the three mobsters metal ropes that wrapped around each of them, trapping them as they fell to the ground.
As the cops led the mobsters away, Saikhan approached the two girls and pointed his finger at them.
"You're under arrest, too." said the cop to the Avatar's and the girl's shock.
"What? Why? They're the bad guys! ¡They were crushing a vendor!" said Masane explaining the situation.
" From the looks of it, your friend smashed up a lot more than that." said Saikhan referring to the stores Korra had smashed in their fight.
"Uh… I'm sorry?" asked Korra with a nervous smile.
"An apology won't be enough. You'll both be questioned." said Saikhan before throwing Masane a metal rope, but Korra stepped in the way and caught the rope.
"Wait, you… you can't arrest us! Let me explain!" said Korra.
"C-Can't we talk about them?" asked Masane trying to avoid a fight with the police.
"We will, but at the police station." said Saikhan before retracting his metal rope and trying to hit Korra with it, but Korra flipped backwards with a somersault.
He then tried to grab Masane with his rope, who raised her arms in defense, but Korra managed to push her away in time.
Before Saikhan attacked again, Naga hit him from behind with her body, pushing him to the ground.
The other policemen, seeing the situation, moved in for the attack.
Korra and Masane jumped on Naga and began to flee.
Quickly, Naga turned to the side, allowing Korra to kick a policeman who jumped towards them before Naga continued to flee with her passengers on top of her.
One policeman threw his metal rope which became entangled in a cable.
Pulling it back, he lunged upwards and slid down a cable as he chased them.
He tried to hit them with two metal ropes, but Naga dodged in time, causing them to hit the ground.
Soon after, Naga turned a corner in time to dodge another pair of metal ropes, though they slipped a bit in the process before continuing their escape.
Suddenly, as they were crossing a bridge, a policeman jumped from a rooftop and threw metal ropes that tangled in Masane's hair, making her groan in pain from the pull.
"Masane!" exclaimed Korra before using waterbending to lift the water from the river and freeze it to form a wall of ice, which the policeman crashed into, causing Masane to break free of the rope.
"Thank you." said Masane.
Korra and Masane glanced back to see the policeman who had crashed into the ice wall slide to the ground.
After that, they turned their attention to the front.
Naga ran up some stairs until she reached a bridge, forcing a satomobile to stop in the process.
Naga continued running as her two passengers looked to the side to see two policemen sliding down the wires.
"They're gaining on us!" said Masane.
"I've got an idea! Hold on tight!" said Korra before pulling Naga's reins to the side, causing her to run to the edge of the bridge and jump off it just as a train passed underneath.
Fortunately, they were able to land perfectly and both let out a sigh of relief that they managed to escape before turning their gaze towards Air Temple Island.
"We have to get to the island. Maybe Tenzin can help us." said Korra.
"Good idea." began Masane before hearing the sirens and looking up. "Oh, no. We're in trouble."
Korra turned her gaze upward to see the police blimp flying overhead.
Korra tugged on Naga's reins and the polar bear dog started running down the train and jumped toward another building, but no sooner had she landed on the roof than several metal ropes wrapped around Naga's paws and lifted her into the air.
Before Korra or Masane could try anything, a pair of metal ropes wrapped around them to restrain their arms.
They tried to free themselves from their bonds for a while until, at last, they gave up, realizing that they had been captured.
In the Republic City police station, where there was a statue of Toph Beifong, the founder of the force and former chief of police, Korra and Masane were handcuffed on a table in an interrogation room.
To say they were nervous would be a lie, as they came to the city to see Tenzin and ask him to train Korra, but they didn't expect Korra to fight some mobsters and then run away from the police, who eventually managed to catch them.
Korra was worried, as she felt that, if Tenzin found out about that, he would send her straight back to the South Pole, to the White Lotus complex, where she would most likely stay there until the bison shaved their own paws.
Masane was somewhat nervous, but for a different reason.
For some particular reason, that situation where she was arrested and taken to an interrogation room was a bit familiar to her, as if she had already experienced a similar situation, only for a different subject than now.
Try as she might, she couldn't remember anything.
Shortly after, the doors of the room opened and an older woman with gray hair and a couple of scars on her right cheek entered with a file cabinet in her hand and, from her expression, she didn't look happy at all.
"Let's see. Multiple counts of destruction of private and city property, not to mention evading arrest…" began the older woman as she walked behind them before slamming the filing cabinet down on the table, startling them in the process. "You're in a whole mess of trouble, young ladies."
"W-We're so sorry. We didn't think it would end up like this, we just wanted to help." said Masane.
"That's right, there were some thugs threatening a helpless shopkeeper, and we had it..." began Korra trying to explain again.
"Can it! You should have called the police and stayed out of the way." said the older woman stepping to the front of the table.
"But we couldn't just sit by and do nothing. It's my duty to help people." said Korra.
"After all, she is the Avatar." said Masane as Korra smiled, hoping her status would do some good.
"Oh, I am well aware of who you are. And your Avatar title might impress some people, but not me." the older woman said with her arms crossed.
"All right, fine. Then I want to talk to whoever's in charge." said Korra.
"You're talking to her." revealed the older woman as she sat down across from them. "I'm Chief Beifong."
While Masane was nervous about having the police chief in front of her, Korra was surprised by something in particular.
"Wait, Beifong? Lin Beifong? You're Toph's daughter!" said Korra surprised at the revelation.
"Wait, Toph Beifong? Avatar Aang's earthbender friend?" said Masane with surprise and excitement.
"What of it?" asked Lin.
"Well then, why are you treating me like a criminal? Avatar Aang and your mother were friends. They saved the world together." said Korra remembering the stories of the previous Avatar.
"That's ancient history. And it's got diddly-squat to do with the mess you're in right now. You can't just waltz in here and dole out vigilante justice like you own the place!" said Lin.
Before they could continue talking, a part of the wall opened to reveal another policeman behind.
"Chief, Councilman Tenzin is here." the policeman reported.
"Let him in." said Lin before getting up.
Then, the wall opened from side to side, allowing Tenzin to enter the room and from the look on his face, he wasn't happy to see them.
"H-Hello, master Tenzin. Nice to see you again." said Masane with a nervous smile.
"Sorry… I got a little sidetracked on my way to see you." said Korra trying to sound innocent, but to no avail.
With a deep inhale to reduce his annoyance, Tenzin turned to see Lin with a smile.
"Lin, you are looking radiant as usual." said Tenzin greeting an old friend.
"Cut the garbage, Tenzin. Why is the Avatar in Republic City? I thought you were supposed to be moving down to the South Pole to train her." said Lin.
"My relocation has been delayed." began Tenzin before shooting an angry and disappointed look at the two girls, who lowered their heads at that. "The Avatar and her friend, on the other hand, will be heading back to the South Pole immediately, where they will stay put."
"What?" asked Masane in surprise.
"But…!" began Korra trying to explain, but was interrupted and ignored.
"If you would be so kind as to drop the charges against them, I will take full responsibility for today's regrettable events and cover all the damages." said Tenzin.
Lin glanced over her shoulder at the two girls.
As much as she wanted to teach them a lesson by locking them in a cell for a night, she couldn't refuse her old friend's offer.
She turned her gaze to the airbender and let out a small sigh.
"Fine." said Lin using her bending ability to espouse Korra and Masane without even looking. "Get them out of my city."
"Always a pleasure, Lin. Let's go, girls." said Tenzin walking out of the room with Korra and Masane behind him as they rubbed their wrists together.
Masane stopped for a moment in the doorway to bow to the police chief.
"A-A pleasure to meet you, Chief Beifong," Masane said before continuing on her way.
Lin threw the Avatar a two-fingered 'I'm watching you' gesture, a gesture that Korra made to her, much to the police chief's confusion.
Later, Korra, Masane and Tenzin were in a waiting room, where Korra was trying to keep them from sending her and her friend back to the compound.
"Tenzin, please, don't send us back home." said Korra.
"You can't do that." said Masane.
"You blatantly disobeyed my wishes and the orders of the White Lotus." said Tenzin.
"But Katara agreed with me that Izuku and me should come. She said my destiny is in Republic City." said Korra.
"And she said I could help her on her journey while I try to get my memories back." said Masane.
"Don't bring my mother into this!" exclaimed Tenzin with an angry red face, causing Masane to startle.
"Look, I can't wait any longer to finish my training. Being cooped up and hidden away from the world isn't helping me become a better Avatar. If I want to become one, I need to experience the outside world directly, not through elder stories." said Korra.
"She's right. We saw a lot of the city today and it's totally out of whack. I understand now why you need to stay. Republic City does need you, but it needs Korra too." said Masane, causing Korra to smile at her friend's support as the airbender stroked his beard.
"You… ah…" began Tenzin unable to find counter argument to the girls.
Before anyone else said anything…
"Is this your polar bear dog, miss?" asked a guard with Naga at his side while holding the leash.
Masane walked over to Naga and started petting her.
"Oh, you've been good, haven't you? Of course you have, because you're such a good, cute little thing." said Masane getting a lick from the polar bear dog.
"Yes… Cute." said the guard.
That same night, on a ship bound for Air Temple Island, Korra and Masane were leaning on the railing as they gazed at the nighttime lights of the city.
Despite the beautiful sights, the two were worried, as they had made a whole journey only to end up returning to the starting point and possibly forever.
Tenzin looked at them for a bit before looking at the statue of his father, Avatar Aang.
At first, he was a simple airbender child who enjoyed playing until he discovered he was the Avatar and his life changed completely.
When he awoke 100 years later, he had to learn how things were in the world through physical contact and not through what others told him.
He also began to think about the previous Avatars who had their interactions with the world, while Korra had remained excluded and all she knew of the world was from books and oral histories.
Surely his mother had told her about what the city was like during her days there, but now things had changed and according to Korra and Masane, for the worse.
The city needed something more than just a group of politicians who weren't capable of solving all the problems.
They needed something more.
He turned his gaze back to the girls and began to think if he was really doing the right thing about sending them back to the White Lotus complex.
Finally, after a while of waiting, they reached the island, where, on the other side of the harbor, was a larger ship, with three White Lotus guards waiting at the entrance.
Korra, saddened by the situation, made her way to the ship with Masane at her side.
Just then the three noticed Tenzin's children flying in their gliders towards them and landing on the ground shortly after.
"Korra! Masane!" shouted the three children going to hug the two girls.
"Are you coming to live with us on the island?" asked Ikki before Korra and Masane knelt down to their level.
"No, I'm sorry, Ikki." said Korra.
"Unfortunately, we have to go back." said Masane.
"Oh…" groaned the children in disappointment.
Tenzin stood with his children watching as Korra, Masane and Naga headed back to the ship.
But when they were halfway there…
"Wait. I have done my best to guide Republic City toward the dream my father had for it, but you're right. It has fallen out of balance since he passed. I thought I should put off your training in order to uphold his legacy, but you are his legacy. You may stay and train airbending here with me. Republic City needs its Avatar once again." said Tenzin bringing a big smile to the Avatar.
"Yes! Thank you! You're the best!" said Korra with great joy as the airbender turned his gaze to the other girl.
"As for you, Masane, seeing how good friends you two are, it would be impossible to separate you now, so you may as well stay here with us. And by the way, I hope you can get answers about your forgotten past." said Tenzin.
Masane smiled seeing that she was going to be able to stay with them as well.
"Good! Thank you very much, master Tenzin!" said Masane.
The young airbenders began to cheer with joy and happiness.
Korra was so happy that she brought Masane, Tenzin and his children in a group hug and Naga rubbed her head on Korra's back, much to everyone's amusement, except for Tenzin who wasn't sure how that would all turn out.
The next day, in front of Republic City's city hall, several people, including journalists, gathered for the main topic of conversation, the arrival of the Avatar.
Korra stood behind a podium full of microphones, looking at all the people who had come while being bombarded by the photographers' flashbulbs.
On one side, there was Tenzin and Masane, and on the other side was Naga and Lin.
Korra was a little nervous, but as she looked to her side, she saw Masane giving her a thumbs up with a wink and a smile which Korra returned as she tossed her nerves aside.
Korra cleared her throat a little as she approached the mikes.
"I'm Korra, your new Avatar." said Korra introducing herself to the audience and listeners as the crowd cheered.
"Does this mean you've moved to Republic City?" asked a reporter.
"Were you trying to send a message to the Triads yesterday?" asked another journalist.
"Will you be fighting crime or the Anti-bending Revolution, or both?" asked another journalist.
"Will you be working with Chief Beifong and the police?" asked another journalist.
Needless to say, Lin looked very annoyed by that question, as the last thing she wanted was a teenage girl, or the Avatar, in her police force.
" Yes, I am definitely here to stay, but honestly I… I don't exactly have a plan yet. See, I'm still in training, but look, all I know is Avatar Aang meant for this city to be the center of peace and balance in the world, and I believe we can make his dream a reality. I look forward to serving you!" said Korra as the photographers began taking more pictures.
Inside some building somewhere in the city, several people were listening to Korra's speech on the radio.
"I'm so happy to be here. Thank you, Republic City!" exclaimed Korra from the other side of the broadcast.
"All right, that's all the questions." said Tenzin from the radio before someone turned it off.
"Amon, how do you want to handle this?" asked a guy in a suit, glasses and mustache to a man who was holding his hands behind his back while his back was turned to him.
"So, the Avatar has arrived early. It looks like we'll have to accelerate our plans." said Amon as he turned his head, allowing us to see that he was wearing a mask covering his face.
AN: This has been the first chapter of this story.
I hope it has been to everyone's liking.
If you think I've gone back to Masane being a bit OOC, I'm very sorry.
I do what I can with that character, but again, I hope it's to your liking.
Again, check out the 'Witchblade' anime.
I'm sure you'll love it.
