Paul was finally at the garage to check on Perry's car and see if there was anything new added or if it was the same from the time it was taken in when the accident happened.
The mechanic's name was Jeremy. He looked after Perry's car the entire time.
"Hello, Jeremy. I'm Paul Drake."
"Hello, Mr. Drake. How is everybody?"
"Fine. I came to check on Mr. Mason's car. The one that was hit with that accident."
"I haven't touched it, Mr. Drake. Is there anything on your mind you want to talk with me about?" Jeremy asked.
"Yes, there is. There's a court date coming in a few days and you're going to be on the witness stand."
"Me? I don't need to show up, do I?"
"Yes, since you're looking after Mr. Mason's car until it's safe for him to drive again."
"How is Perry?"
"Okay, but just confused about this whole thing, which was to be expected. He's trying to remember what happened until the accident at nine o'clock that morning. That's the time of the court date. We'll see you then."
Paul took a close look at Perry's car.
"So you haven't touched it like you just said?"
"Of course that's right, Mr. Drake. Do you know when he would be able to have his car back?"
"I don't, but his doctor does and can answer your question," Paul answered.
"Okay. I should try my best to show up at court."
"Not your best. Just to do it."
"Do I need to contact you anywhere, Mr. Drake?"
"Not at the moment, but if you need to talk to me, just call my office," Paul said, writing down his number.
Paul added, "Jeremy, answering your question about Perry. He's just in no condition to drive anytime soon."
"Thanks for letting me know."
"You're welcome."
"I'll tell Mr. Mason that you asked about him. There's no telling what would happen if he didn't survive that accident."
Paul's next stop was to the house again.
Like everybody else, Paul hoped this would be over sooner rather than later. He also wanted to talk with the Johnsons about their child and the courtroom, but Perry had already beaten him to it.
Della was still at the office when Perry was talking with Dr. Webber.
"Della?"
Perry walked into the kitchen right where she was.
"Yes, Perry?"
"My doctor called. He has some new stuff to share. He also wants to see me."
"What kind of new stuff?"
"He didn't give me any detail, Della. He said to show up in about three and a half hours."
"I can take you there."
"Thank you. He said he's talked with Paul and Hamilton about this, so this was another reason why he called me. I wonder if Paul found some stuff."
"I was wondering the same thing, Perry. Would you like anything to eat or drink?"
"No, thank you. I'll just help myself to a glass of water."
Perry didn't want to share with Della about what Dr. Webber said about cancelling out on the court date.
"Did he say to bring anything with you?" Della asked.
"No. I don't think I need to."
Paul knocked on the door.
"I wonder who that could be," she said.
"I'll answer it."
He got up from the kitchen table and headed to the front door to see who it was.
"Hi, Paul. Have you found out anything?"
"Of course I did. Mind if we chat for a while?"
"Come in then, Paul. Della's in the kitchen."
"She can listen too. You look like you have something to share with me as well," Paul told him.
"How did you know that?"
"From the look on your face, that's how. Why don't you tell me first, Perry?"
"I got a call from the doctor."
"You did? I thought I talked with him too, but he never said anything about getting in contact with you."
"What did he tell you, Perry?"
"He says we should cancel the court date for a better time."
"I don't think that can change, Perry."
"That's what I thought too," Perry said, walking to the kitchen table and drank some of his water.
"Hello, Della."
"Hello, Paul. Have you found anything?" she asked.
"Perry just asked me the same question. Of course I did. This is why I'm here, Della."
"Della already offered to drive me out to the hospital later, Paul. You're welcome to come, but there's no reason to."
"Thanks for taking care of this, Della."
"You're welcome."
"What time did the doctor give you, Perry?" Paul asked.
"Three and a half hours."
"What stuff has he found that was new?" Della asked.
"I don't know. All he said was to reschedule the court date."
"Just tell him no can do."
"All right."
"Do you have any idea what he would want to do, Perry?" Della asked.
"I don't know, Della. We'll keep you posted, Paul. Then you can pass it over to him."
"Will do."
"I checked out your car, Perry. You don't need to hear about the car news," Paul said.
"Well, I should, since it's my car."
"Not in this condition, you won't. Let's not argue, Perry."
"You have a good point, Paul, but I still need to know about what happened to it."
"Maybe when you're better, you might be able to try driving, but let's wait and see what he says first."
