Aether was sitting on the edge of the bed as he listened to various stories of the events Paimon had recently experienced. Although saying that he was listening to her was a lie.

His conflicted and somewhat lost gaze was only focused on the window in his bedroom who allowed the first rays of morning to enter through.

That moment could have lasted much longer if someone hadn't intervened.

"You are already awake? Shogun-sama requires your care. And as always, thank you for your support." Commented Sara, who had entered the bedroom before Paimon shot her a somewhat peculiar look.

"Why knock, if you're going to come in anyway?" The fairy, girl, floating thing asked as she crossed her arms.

"It's time?" The blonde was brought out of his thoughts as his gaze travelled to Sara. "This may sound a little sudden, but can you take care of her for today?" Aether's words undoubtedly caught the attention of the two present, who looked at him inquisitively.

"Sure, it's not a problem." Sara responded with a nod without taking her eyes off Aether, as if she were waiting for him to say something.

"Ei is a fan of desserts. Make sure you give her something delicious for breakfast." The blonde commented with a smile, earning another nod from Sara, although on this occasion a certain clumsiness was seen in her actions.

"I…okay." Sara responded with a slight stutter. "Then I won't bother you anymore." Sara closed the door, leaving a somewhat thoughtful Aether and a worried Paimon.

"Hey…" Paimon walked around him to get his attention, which worked. "Are you okay?" She asked the question Sara didn't dare ask, earning a long look from Aether.

"I do! Why not?" A smile emerged on Aether's face, a smile that didn't completely fool Paimon. "I've been a little tired, that's all. I just need to clear my head a little."

"If you say so…" Paimon trailed off.

Aether turned his gaze towards the incoming rays of light. His face became somewhat serious again when the following words of a certain Archon returned to his mind:

"To begin with, I have never fallen in love, and I don't think I will in the future either."

_ CHAPTER 8: CONFLICT _

The noise of the empty cup being placed on the tray was the only thing heard in that short period of time.

"Do you want me to add more coffee?" Asked Sara, who looked completely prepared to attend to Shogun Raiden, the leader of her nation, something very common for her.

"Not well. Thank you for your help, as always." Ei commented with a smile.

"Do you want to go somewhere specific when you finish breakfast? Do you want to try other desserts? Do you want to use a wheelchair or would you prefer that I carry you in my arms? Do you want to visit Miss Yae to find out more about certain situations, or would you prefer that I tell you things myself?" Sara asked with her typical relentless intensity about her Archon.

Anyone else might feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed, but Ei looked completely calm, as if she had already had these kinds of experiences throughout almost her entire life.

"It's not necessary, I know they are doing a great job. Today I prefer to stay in my bedroom to wait for him. If you want, you can continue with your work." Sara looked at her with some hesitancy after hearing her words, something that Ei grasped instantly. "What's going on?"

"About the traveler…I don't know if he will come to see you today." Those words puzzled Ei quite a bit.

"Didn't you say he was fine?" The Goddess asked with a slight concern as she thought they were hiding something from her.

"He is. Well…actually, I don't know." Sara couldn't help but lower her gaze after remembering the talk she had with the blonde. "If you wish, I can call him here for questioning." The commander said as she raised her gaze suddenly, reflecting her sharp eyes.

"No, it is not necessary. In fact, that would be disrespectful." Ei responded almost instantly, making Sara lower her gaze even more dejectedly, since she had been scolded by her Archon……according to her standards atleast. "Can you tell me what you saw?" Ei's sudden question made Sara snap out of that small facet as she became serious again.

"I wouldn't know how to explain it clearly. If I had to describe it in any way, I would say that he was…" Sara paused for a moment to think about the word, until she finally found it:

"Disconnected."

"Disconnected?" Ei couldn't help but raise her eyebrow after such a strange description.

"Yeah. It's as if he was stuck in some deep mystery. I think it has something to do with his sister, that's why I chose not to intrude." Sara stated confidently, earning a slight but deep nod from Ei.

"I see…" Was her short response. She chose to address Sara after that, "Then I hope you can find some peace on your day off." She concluded with a neutral look.

A neutral look, which, contradictorily, said a large number of things.

Sara knew her Archon very well, so those eyes that shone with a certain insecurity and even a little sadness did not go unnoticed.

"You two became very close, didn't you?" Sara asked with a slight smile, earning Ei's attention once again.

That question made a delicate smile adorn the face of the beautiful Goddess, who joined her hands with slight emotion and shyness after remembering her precious friend.

"That's how it is."

Watatsumi Islands, Inazuma

A couple of hours later…

Aether fell on his butt to the ground. His breathing was very agitated, and beads of sweat were coming down from his face at great speeds. His gaze rose the moment a shadow landed in front of him.

"We're done for today." The traveler declared, taking a long sigh at the end in an attempt to regulate his breathing.

"So soon? I thought you wanted to train until the afternoon, buddy." Itto commented while extending his hand to help him up.

"That was the idea." Aether half-heartedly responded as he accepted the Oni's hand. "But training all day is of no use if I can't concentrate." The traveler's response earned a somewhat curious look from Itto.

"Yeah you were distracted today. It's like you're not you. Wait, did that make sense?" The Oni commented.

"It's something that's bothering me, but it's nothing important." Aether answered the unasked question as he watched Kokomi search for different flowers and be helped by Itto's henchmen, including Kuki herself. "It's good to see that they finally decided to accept your help." Itto chuckled after hearing it.

"Of course they would! We are the Great Arataki Gang!" He exclaimed as he placed both hands on his waist, puffing out his chest with pride.

"Does that have nothing to do with Kuki talking to Yae yesterday?" The blonde asked with an inquisitive look, making Itto's smile falter a little.

"I think she has helped us, but she didn't want to tell us anything about it." Itto commented, his smile dropping off as he admitted that. "I remember she looked very serious. You know, more serious than she usually is."

"I remember it too, I guess it's weird." Aether commented while crossing his arms.

Both friends watched as the green-haired girl helped her friends and Kokomi with the medicinal herbs and flowers. Neither of them said a single word, until…

"Hey, what's bothering you?" The Oni asked without mincing words.

"We should go back now. Maybe today we will find out what Yae and Kuki were talking about." Aether's comment completely diverted the focus, something that worked perfectly.

You just had to see Itto's expression to confirm it.

"You're right, we have to go back and find out what that woman is up to!" The Oni exclaimed while nodding with great vigor.

A moment later…

"… That?" Itto, who sported a stone face, asked.

Evidently he had heard correctly, but he needed to confirm it.

In front of him and his companions was an extremely calm Yae sitting at her desk, doing her morning paperwork.

"We need to resume worship in our region, but all the priests are dead, except for me, who is quite busy for now. The kind lady will be in charge of the new temple until I can take charge." Yae commented, then looked to his side. "Isn't that right, darling?"

"I will do my best." Kuki, who had changed her clothing, radically responded.

She was no longer wearing her usual mask, and her ninja outfit had been replaced by a cute priestess dress that had a white and red color. Her previously tied hair now fell completely freely on her back. In fact, her beauty was now somewhat more notable, and this was apparent in the blushing faces of her companions.

Although Itto's case was completely different.

"I-i-i!" Itto couldn't even formulate more than two words as he remained paralyzed like a stone.

In fact, such was his shock that he slowly fell backwards, but luckily for him, the members of his gang were there to catch him.

"When he wakes up again, tell him this doesn't mean I'm leaving the band." Kuki proved to be as perceptive as ever in guessing the thoughts that were passing through the Oni's mind.

"O-okay, we'll tell him!" The three men exclaimed at the same time, earning a confused look from Kuki, who just watched as they all left, dragging their boss.

"Hmmm…" Yae hummed with glee as she rested her hand under her chin. "I can no longer wait for you to return to your roots, dear." The Yokai commented with a very suspicious tone.

"It's the last thing I can do after everyone is gone…" Kuki gaze fell downwards, her expression taking a quite melancholic and somewhat sad tone to it. "I owe it to her."

"I already told you before not to carry other people's regrets." Yae commented, giving a slight sigh at the end. "They were my responsibility. If you can't understand something as basic as that, maybe I shouldn't give you this job." The Yokai's tone sounded more serious and dangerous than ever.

"Don't worry. "I promise I won't let you down." Kuki nodded with conviction, and Aether supported her in his own way as he placed a hand on her shoulder.

That simple gesture earned a smile from the young woman, something she responded by doing the same action. Yae watched the entire interaction with a slight smile, but her final gaze focused solely on Aether.

"Dear, could you excuse us? I have to talk to the traveler." The woman commented, looking back at her new priestess. "You can go to the new temple to begin your work." Kuki responded with a slight bow as she said goodbye to both of them.

"Is the search for the novels turning out as you expected?" Aether asked her as they were left alone.

"It is too early to confirm it. The fact that different groups from Inazuma go to all regions raises a lot of questions." Yae responded with a slight shrug of her shoulders.

"I see, if you need help…"

"Thank you, but right now I'm wondering why Sara is taking care of Ei and not you." Yae interrupted him, and that unasked question made the blonde visibly tense. "Sara told me you needed to rest your mind, but you look really good." Yae narrowed her eyes in extreme suspicion. "I want you to be honest with me, did you and her have a fight?"

"A fight?" Aether asked himself a little perplexed. "I wouldn't describe it that way."

"Then, something happened." Yae's eyes narrowed even more, making Aether more and more nervous. "Do you want to tell me? Or maybe you want to talk to her directly? Right now she is having lunch on the roof."

"Speaking of lunch, I just remembered something very important!" Aether exclaimed on the verge of stuttering, who soon ran away. "See you later!"

Yae looked somewhat surprised at how quickly Aether disappeared from the place, leaving the entire place in a very deep silence.

Finally, her lips moved to formulate a few words:

"He escaped."

Two days later…

In all this time Aether had created numerous excuses to avoid having to cross paths with Ei, one more credible than the other, but they were all working without problems. That way he stayed away, and that way he could be calmer.

Or that's what he thought.

The reality was that the distance from the woman he loved so much was slowly affecting him, and he knew it.

But Aether didn't know one thing.

He certainly never expected that his attempt to distance himself from the Goddess could affect her so much.

If keeping distance from her was bothering him, then Ei was at the point of suffering. Now it was downright obvious that he was ignoring her, and that fact made her hurt too much.

Maybe she didn't understand exactly why, but she understood perfectly what the pain of losing someone was.

Even though he was there, he felt more distant than ever.

And that was what was tormenting her.

That was very evident right now, since Ei was on the roof with Yae and Sara. She was wearing a rather depressed look at the concern of her two friends.

"I already told you, Raiden-sama. He's too busy right now to visit you." Sara commented carefully, and Yae gave her a silent look.

"It's no use lying to her, Sara. Both I and she knows something strange is happening." The Yokai declared, making Sara look down in slight sadness at not being able to help her Archon. "Have you thought about what I told you?" Yae fixed her gaze on Ei, who seemed somewhat hesitant at that question.

Her doubts were mixed with the sadness and the melancholy that was eating away at her.

These feelings had always been common to her, but what really alerted Yae and Sara was that they had rarely seen her express those feelings.

In the vast majority of cases, her face always remained indifferent, completely apathetic to any situation around her.

Now her face was close to tears.

"I've been thinking about it…and I think…I think it's my fault." Ei commented with a very downcast tone. "It wasn't a fight, but when we talked about what the Archons did and felt, I could feel that he changed." The Archon fixed her gaze on Sara after his words. "You said earlier that he seemed disconnected. I think that's when he decided to ignore me. I think…I think I said something he didn't like…" Ei's voice broke off into a soft sob as tears formed in her eyes.

"Then it's just a misunderstanding." Yae placed a hand on her shoulder to comfort her.

Although it was difficult for her to admit it, Yae was very surprised to witness Ei's delicate state, and what surprised her most was that it was only one person, one man.

"No, it's not a misunderstanding. I just told him how I am. "I think I let him down and that's why everything turned out this way." Ei responded when as she lowered her gaze, her tone getting more controlled thanks to Yae's support.

"And what did you say to him? Maybe we can change that to…"

"I don't want to lie to him." Ei interrupted Sara immediately, who only remained silent when she noticed that Raiden Shogun's usual dangerous tone returned to her, although she seemed very pacified by the pain she was suffering.

"In that case, just let me talk to him." Yae rubbed her shoulders, earning Ei's attention. "He said he was at a meeting to receive a friend, but I'm sure it won't be long." Ei just nodded and wiped away the lines created by her tears.

Both Sara and Yae said goodbye to Ei to let her read in peace. Once they were going down the stairs, the conversation between them began:

"I can't believe that the Great Narukami-sama is so upset just because the traveler hasn't wanted to talk to her for three days." Sara commented, unable to believe the recent event.

"You believe it?" Yae asked as she looked at her out of the corner of her eyes. "For me everything is very clear." The comment made Sara stop to look at the Yokai with some confusion.

Was she saying there was an ulterior motive?

"You never get tired of getting into complicated matters, huh? Now that I think back, that's how we met." Venti commented with a chuckle at the end, earning an exhausted smile from Aether.

"Don't make me remember it. Paimon almost died of a heart attack when she saw Dvalin."

"Let's cheer for that!" The bard exclaimed as he raised his drink.

"Do you toast anything?" Aether asked with a nervous sweatdrop, but he still agreed to his friend's request.

They both clinked their drinks in that somewhat dark tavern. The funny thing is that only the receptionist was there, cleaning some glasses.

"It seems that the people here are very busy." Venti commented, looking at the empty place.

"No choice. Things are just now getting a little normal and I think alcohol is the last thing on anyone's mind right now. "Something contradictory, given that we have just gone through a great tragedy." Aether declared, then tasted his drink.

"I know that these people have absolute strength. I find it curious that their leader does not share that same enthusiasm." Venti's last words made Aether raise both eyebrows. "Luckily today Paimon isn't with us, or she might scold you a lot for drinking alcohol." Venti moved his drink away slightly to rest his elbows on the table and his hands under his chin. "Is it so complicated to manage people's desires that you have started drinking alcohol? I have a pretty vivid memory of your repulsion towards this type of drink." The drunken bard commented, emphasizing one of the many memories they shared in the past.

"Well…circumstances can change." It was Aether's simple comment as he looked closely at his drink.

A short silence fell between them as they focused on continuing drinking.

"Do you know what's next?" The question came when Venti placed the drink back on the table.

"A lot of problems, I know. I also know that these problems will eventually turn into a war. I also know that this war could involve many regions, and we will all be equally screwed."

"Know? I don't think I could have described it any better." Venti commented with a smile. Luckily, I already know which side I should be on." Those words gained the blonde's attention.

"What do you mean by that?" He asked with great curiosity.

"I'm just saying that you're going to need a lot of help, especially if you're looking to get into new regions where your reputation is non-existent, or where there are war problems." Venti raised his drink as his smile widened. "In any case, you know you can count on my help!"

Aether looked a little surprised at first, but eventually smiled and returned the gesture of alliance as he clinked his drink with Venti's.

"I'll keep that in mind, we'll definitely need you." He concluded, and Venti's smile widened.

"Now stop worrying so much about the future and let's enjoy the present!" The Archon exclaimed with joy, a joy that the blonde did not share.

"Hey? But what worries me is the present…" Aether responded, making Venti's smile disappear.

"Wait, you mean your long face is because of something else?" The Archon asked with great interest.

"So much for notice?" Aether wondered aloud, scolding himself for being an open book.

"Come on, stop the soup! You know your secrets will be safe with your drinking buddy!" Venti exclaimed with a chuckle at the end.

"Well, since you insist…" Aether rubbed his hair with some sadness, then turned serious. "It's really about love."

The receptionist stopped washing the glass after that comment, something Venti easily noticed.

Knowing that it could be a sensitive topic, the Archon leaned back in his seat.

"Love? Who would have thought that someone would finally reach your heart?" Venti whispered, thus making sure no one heard the talk. "Oh and do tell me, who is the lucky one?" He asked, barely able to contain the excitement emanating from his voice.

"She…she is…" Aether became very nervous, so the next whisper was barely heard:

"The Raiden Shogun."

A short silence encapsulated the area before them as Venti blinked conspicuously. It was obvious that the information had certainly surprised him, something that was not easy to do.

"Seriously? Ei is a Goddess who most definitely doesn't understand anything about that. Now I see why you feel like this." The Archon commented with a slight nod. "And what do you plan to do about it?"

"Just walk away." Aether responded somewhat depressed.

"Go away?" Venti asked with a raised eyebrow. "So you're just going to run away?" That last question undoubtedly surprised Aether a lot, who observed the God with his eyes wide open.

"I…I just…what else do you expect me to do?" The blonde asked, very puzzled.

"It's a joke? It is obvious what I expect from you." Venti commented with a slight smile. "You always face your destiny with great determination and courage, no matter how dangerous it is to go forward. That's what makes you so strong. Your will. You are someone who attracts problems, but you are also one of the only ones who can contain them. Tell me something, having lived so many adventures…" Venti fixed his gaze on his drink and grabbed it to shake it a little, leaving a few seconds of suspense in the process.

"Why do you back down from something so simple and easy?"

Aether remained silent after hearing it, as he did not know what to say about it.

"Besides, I think that by walking away you are only hurting yourself. I'm sure Ei must be very puzzled by what you decided too, and I'm sure she must be a little distraught too." Aether looked down and thought about Venti's words carefully. "Do what you always did. Find a solution to your problems, don't run away from them. And in case things don't go well, remember that you will always have your bard friend who will be available to have a few drinks with you." Those last words brought a slight smile from the blonde, who had finally made up his mind.

"Thank you." Aether gave him a toothy smile, earning a chuckle from Venti, who soon raised his drink.

"Let's drink to love!"

A few minutes later…

Yae and Sara were working in silence. The Yokai averted her gaze to observe the great difference in paperwork that existed between her and her assistant.

"Looks like you'll have to stay up until midnight again." Yae commented, earning Sara's attention.

"It's not a bother. "I will do whatever it takes to make Inazuma prosper again." The commander declared with great conviction, and Yae rested her arms on her own papers in response.

It was obvious that she liked Sara's iron will, but the fact that she was giving herself so much more than her without even wanting to accept a little help made her frown.

Luckily, the solution to all their worries emerged from the main entrance. Aether greeted the two ladies with a smile as he approached their desks.

"Finally you got here…." Sara commented, her neutral tone indicating that she was neither happy nor upset to see him.

"Sorry, Venti is too much of a party animal." The blonde commented while rubbing his hair as an apologetic gesture.

"You know, it's not that we want to interfere with your responsibilities, but Sara is very busy having to take care of Ei and do paperwork. The double shift is slowly overloading her and…"

"Don't worry. I will resume taking care of Ei right now." Aether's immediate and unapologetic response surprised both women, who looked at each other.

"Well…that's…Great!" Sara exclaimed, unable to help but smile.

"Sorry. Your schedules became more complicated due to me." Aether clasped his hands and bowed briefly in apology.

"Instead of apologizing, why don't you take action now?" Yae commented in a contemptuous tone. "She is on the roof." The Yokai's words made Aether nod awkwardly as he headed to his reunion with the Archon.

Meanwhile, Sara and Yae watched silently as Aether walked up the stairs.

"It seems like things are finally resolved." Sara commented mostly to herself, and then took the cup of coffee.

"Of course. But I never would have expected such a unique development. Originally, I just wanted those two to become friends. Well, it's not that bad either…" Yae shrugged her shoulders, downplaying what she was going to say next:

"Who knew Ei could fall in love?"

Sara spit out all her coffee after hearing such a statement.

Ei sneezed again, and that caused a confused look to grace her features.

"I feel like they've been talking a lot behind my back lately…" The Archon thought as she rubbed her nose, then returned her gaze to the book, which was accompanied by a small lantern on the table.

However, her reading experience was interrupted again when she heard the door to the roof open. Her expression did a 180 degree turn when she saw who it was. At first she looked very surprised, but then her face lit up as it usually did whenever that special person was by her side.

"Good…night?" Aether greeted her with his typical smile, although he looked a little tense.

"Come closer." The Goddess commented as she patted the free seat next to her.

That illuminated face had already changed to a look covered in concern, and that only made the tension in Aether more visible.

Once the traveler sat next to her, Ei studied him with her eyes for a few seconds. That worried expression had transformed into an analyzing one, as if she was trying to figure out what was happening to him. Although that interrogation of glances did not last more than a few seconds.

"Why didn't you want to see me?" Ei was as direct as ever, making Aether start to sweat with that smile that completely gave him away. "Did I say something to you that you didn't like when we were writing the book?" The last word made Aether look at her in slight surprise.

He thought she hadn't noticed, but apparently he was wrong.

"It's nothing really. It's just a personal problem." The traveler's vague response caused Ei's analytical gaze to change to an expression covered in sympathy.

"So Sara was right? Do you feel like this because of your sister?" Ei asked with her eyebrows furrowed in concern.

"I…? Well, it's true." Aether nodded somewhat awkwardly, since somehow he always had his sister in mind.

But it was evident that that was not the source of his worries at the moment. Still, he decided that this half-lie might save him for now.

"I can understand what you feel, believe me." Ei commented with utmost regret, which slowly turned into a smile. "But you still have the possibility of seeing her again and being with her. So, go for it. Nothing is lost yet." The Goddess hugged him gently, but it felt a lot stronger thn it should have been.

The traveler felt the delicate warmth that the woman transmitted to him, so he let himself be carried away by his feelings and returned the hug with great affection, and, above all, a lot of hidden love.

A slight smile arose on Ei as she felt how Aether vented his frustrations with the simple gesture. Although she did it solely for him, deep down she knew that she also did it to express her unconditional love and support.

Too unconditional.

The hug lasted much longer than either of them would have thought. And, although Aether's true concerns were not revealed, that gesture relaxed him so much that it helped free him.

"Why do you back down from something so simple and easy?"

Venti's words returned to his head and the true smile returned to his face when he focused his gaze on the face of that beautiful Archon, who responded in the same way when he covered her smile with the cover of the novel.

That made his attention radically shift to that little book.

"Have you been reading it?" The traveler asked with great curiosity, and Ei looked at the book with a somewhat passionate smile on his face.

"Of course. This book has very interesting content. These nights, reading it has captivated me so much that when I take my eyes off its pages it already becomes day." Ei responded with a dreamy look just as she extended her hand to take one of the many petals that emerged from the beautiful plants that the civilians had planted.

Finally, her gaze returned to Aether and she gave him a beautiful smile.

"It has been a unique experience, I never thought that time passed so quickly, like the short time we spent under these petals."

Aether watched her in silence, completely stunned by her natural and unique beauty. But he quickly reacted, causing a giggle to escape his lips.

At this, Ei could only look at him with slight confusion.

"What is so funny?" Her brow furrowed a little after the question, leaving a really cute look on her.

"You have become quite a poet in just three days. With that I can tell how much you like that light novel." Aether commented amusingly, causing a faint blush to shoot across Ei's face. "Jokes aside, I'm quite impressed that you are so captivated by the story, since you are not able to understand the main genre of it." The blonde crossed his legs and looked at her with great curiosity.

"Maybe that's why I was so attracted to it." Ei commented as he focused his gaze on the book. "The joy of not understanding romance is unique. They have always tried to explain it to me, but I never understood it because they were just words. But, here…" A rather unique look crossed her eyes as they sparkled. "Here they not only explain it to you, but they also transmit it through an experience. So…then I think that thanks to this gift of yours I can understand this kind of feeling a little better." He concluded with a smile, and Aether responded in his own way as he stood up.

"In that case, perhaps you will be able to understand the true emotions behind a bard's melody." The comment made Ei look at him with slight confusion.

"I never had a problem understanding music." Ei commented, making Aether's smile widen.

"There is a friend waiting for you in the city." Those words undoubtedly surprised Ei.

"A friend?"

"That's how it is. You guys haven't seen each other in a long time, so maybe you barely recognize him." Aether commented with a subjective smile, drawing even more attention from the curious Archon. "Do you want me to take you to the reunion?"

"If you do not mind." Ei commented, but that curiosity was left in the background when she extended her hands forward with the intention of hugging the blonde, something she achieved.

Aether watched with a faint blush as the Goddess clung to him, showing more affection than usual, as she always did.

"I haven't even gotten up yet. I can't carry you like this…" The blonde commented with blank eyes, who could barely move in the current situation.

Ei rested her hands on his chest and rested her face right on his heart to listen to the beats. She opened one of her eyes and looked at him with a mixture of curiosity and confusion:

"Is it really that difficult?"

_ END OF THE CHAPTER! _

I hope you liked it!

Remember that there is a really long sequence of consecutive chapters, so we will be seeing each other in 3 days or less.

This chapter was quite calm, but I plan that the next one will be quite busy with new character introductions, and one of them will be quite relevant to this story.

With nothing more to add, it's time to say goodbye.

Thanks so much for reading!

(Special thanks to f46adpg, without his help these translations wouldn't be ready so fast)
