Donna took the rest of the week off. Thankfully, the opening night of her new show that was originally scheduled for that week had been postponed, and Mike and Rachel had decided to extend their trip through the weekend. She didn't want to hide from Harvey, and she certainly didn't want to be away from Rosie, but she had to put herself first while she got her emotions in check.
…
Harvey's phone rang on Tuesday afternoon as he sat in his office staring out the window.
"It's only been like three days, I hear you fucked up already," Mike quipped on the other end of the line.
"Mike," he groaned, "I really don't want to get into this…"
"Too bad. I'm on my way over there, meet me at the bar across the street in 10."
…
Stopping first on the 26th floor to quickly check in on Rosie, Harvey headed across the street to meet Mike.
The two men sat in silence, sipping their drinks, Mike waiting for Harvey to take the lead.
"I know I messed up," he finally admitted. "I know I'm not handling any of this right."
Mike had prepared for Harvey to put up more of a fight, but the sadness in his friend's voice showed just how vulnerable he was.
"Harvey, I know your whole life just got turned upside down, but you have everything you need to handle it. Everyone you need."
"I can't put that kind of responsibility on her…I can't ask her –"
"Harvey, she loves you, alright? For whatever reason Donna is so goddamn in love with you, and she loves Rosie and she wants to do this with you. I'm so sick of this shit between the two of you." He took a long drink from his glass.
Slightly taken aback by Mike's forwardness, Harvey pushed back, "It's complicated."
"Jesus Christ, Harvey of course it's complicated, neither of you have ever made it easy. I know I fucked things up last time I told Donna to go after you, but now I'm saying it to you. Figure it out. For you, and for her."
Harvey swallowed hard.
"You have a kid, Harvey, it's time to grow up."
…
Harvey stayed at the bar for one more drink, thinking over what his friend had said.
She's in love with you, she wants to do this with you.
Putting his glass down, he made his way back to the office. He picked Rosie up early, and called Ray to come take them home. He was overwhelmed and needed time to think.
…
He was getting into a routine with Rosie, and was thankful that she was such an easy, happy baby. Bathtime became less of a warzone, bedtime happened after reading one book snuggling in the beanbag, and dinner mostly ended up in her mouth.
He couldn't believe how much she had changed, even after just one week. He started taking more pictures; every cute outfit, every chocolate covered face, every night as she fell asleep.
He wanted to send every one of them to Donna. He came close, especially when he'd put her in one of the little dresses she picked out for her, but he always stopped himself, every time a pang of guilt hitting him, as if to say it's your fault she isn't here.
After putting Rosie to bed on Thursday night, Harvey poured himself a glass of scotch, and sat down on the couch.
His condo, despite being filled with toys, swings, everything his daughter could want and more, still felt empty. He knew what was missing; who was missing, he just didn't know what to do about it.
His thoughts were interrupted by cries on the baby monitor. She never woke up during the night, so Harvey rushed into her room, and scooped her into his arms.
"It's okay sweetie, I'm here, it's okay," he whispered, rubbing circles on her back.
Looking up at Harvey with tears streaming down her face, she let out a watery, "Mamaaaa" burying her head into his shoulder.
Harvey froze, his heart shattering into a million pieces. He didn't know how long he stood there for, as she continued to sniffle and call out for her.
"I know babygirl," he whispered, placing a kiss on her forehead, "I miss her too."

Note: Quick update this morning to keep things moving. More later today, and a lot more after that. Thank you for still being here.
