Ordinary Lives

Glancing at his watch with a sigh, Eddie Henderson-Sinclair shook his head.

'Poor Jake, he's missed Home room and now might miss first period.' He thought sadly.

He ran a hand through his messy dark brown hair, hazel eyes surveying the outside of the classroom through the window he sat next to, hoping to spot Jake's arrival.

"Mr. Henderson-Sinclair, do please pay attention to the board, the notes are there, not out the window." A good-natured jovial voice interrupted him.

The tanned boy flushed as he turned to meet the gaze of his Maths teacher.

"Sorry, Mr. Wilson, sir." He said quietly.

Luckily it was Mr. Wilson who just nodded and resumed the class. He had a reputation as the most easy-going, friendly teacher at school. It's why Eddie hoped Jake would make it before the end of first period, Mr. Wilson preferred to just issue warnings, rather than tardy slips and a warning didn't go on your school record.

He wasn't alone in his hopes as seated next to him was a girl, shorter than him with shoulder length wavy auburn hair and grey eyes, rather pale and skinny. Sharing a glance with Eddie and biting her lip, Terry Hopper-Mayfield was also hoping for Jake to arrive in time. Luckily their prayers were then answered as the door opened and Jake stepped in awkwardly.

"S-sorry I'm late Mr. Wilson." He said.

"Jake." Mr. Wilson sighed. "You need to start calling ahead when you're going to be late."

"Sorry, sir." He said quietly.

Mr. Wilson nodded. "Alright, take your seat. I trust you two can give him the notes he's missed?"

He addressed Eddie and Terry as he said that last part and they both nodded in confirmation as Jake sat down, relieved. He got everything he needed set up and looked around, he tried to hide a smile as he saw Terry and Eddie's attention wander again, to two girls in particular. Both were naturally in the same age group as him, Eddie and Terry, the first was tall and pale with shoulder length platinum hair and blue eyes, as well as a slender lanky build. Her name was Tanya Williams, an upbeat girl developing something of a punk skater vibe that was drawing Eddie's eye. Meanwhile Terry seemed to keep stealing glances at an Asian-American girl with tan skin, a black pixie cut and brown eyes, wearing red glasses and who also had a slender albeit slightly curvy build in regards to her hips, the shy girl's name being Michelle Newton. Jake smiled at the obvious crushes his friends had, but also began thinking about his own.

Stephanie Buckley smiled lightly as she checked the text on her phone, glad to get the good news, she hurried to catch up with the others, long light brown hair flowing behind her, brown eyes bright as she caught up to her boyfriend, Matthew Harrington, said to be the spitting image of his father when he was seventeen, a fact Stephanie's mom Robin frequently teased him for.

"Hey, was that Eddie?"

Stephanie nodded. "Yeah, it's all good, Jake's safe, he made it to school, Scorpion's dealt with."

They both grinned at that and kissed before a girl's voice interrupted them.

"Careful you two, don't want to get a PDA on the last day."

They both parted, blushing, Stephanie's blush practically lighting up her pale skin as they beheld the speaker, and her twin brother, both tall with brown hair and eyes and fair skin, both with fit builds too. It was Thomas and Barbara Byers.

"So, did I hear that right, our little cousin is safe?" Thomas queried.

Stephanie nodded. "Yeah, all taken care."

Barbara smiled. "Good, well, we can go to class with no worries then.

"Oh I think you guys might wanna wait a bit before that." Matthew smirked, nodding behind them.

The twins turned and it was their turn to blush as their respective sweethearts approached. Barbara's boyfriend Jeff Benton a quiet, nerdy young man with short dark red hair, blue eyes and fair skin, slender and wearing glasses. Then Thomas' girlfriend, Olivia Jensen, a perky cheerleader type with an hourglass figure, dark brown skin and short black hair, brown eyes and a fit build. Watching the interaction as the two approached, Stephanie and Matthew smiled, it was moments like this they had to grasp, since who could tell when things would turn sour again.

Leaving their maths class and heading for the next one, the middle-school members of the Avengers were simply chatting and also enjoying the peace while it lasted. That was when Jake nudged Eddie.

"Hey, check out Amanda."

Eddie turned to see his cousin, Amanda Sinclair, her mother, Eddie's Aunt Erica had been firm on legally changing their names back after the divorce from Amanda's husband, standing talking to a boy. Amanda resembled her mother in looks and even, to a degree, attitude, she was also a year younger than the trio of Jake, Eddie and Terry. The boy was a tall and strongly built young man, popular and smart, had short brown hair and eyes with lightly tanned skin and was cheerful and friendly. His name was Nathan Stone and he was Amanda's crush.

"She's got all three of us beat. She can at least to her crush." Terry noted ruefully.

Nevertheless they all smiled and nodded to Amanda upon her spotting them, before heading to class.

It was as they were approaching their next class that Jake's Spider-Sense triggered and he reacted quickly, narrowly avoiding a collision with someone.

"Oh sorry, I...oh." They blurted out before stopping.

Jake stopped too, eyes wide and face heating up. The speaker was a medium height slender girl his age with brown eyes and long wavy dirty blonde hair, pale skinned and a soft gentle face which brightened when she smiled, a smile that turned Jake's insides in knots. It was his crush, Jessica Castle.

"Hi, Jake right?" She said, still smiling.

Jake swallowed but found his voice. "Y-yeah, nice to meet you, um, Jessica right?"

He did his best to ignore Terry and Eddie's snickering.

"That's right, say I was wondering...you're pretty good in Mr. Lorre's science class right?" She remarked. "You think we could meet up somewhere, maybe tomorrow and you could help me with his summer vacation homework, I know I'm gonna struggle with it."

"Oh um, sure, I can, I mean, yeah, I'd live to help." He stammered out quickly.

Jessica smiled. "Thanks, here, my number, text me and I'll let you know when I've found a place."

Jake thanked her, taking the slip of paper and smiling as she left. Eddie and Terry snickered again and he smirked.

"At least I spoke to my crush, unlike you guys." He remarked. "Amanda and I are already doing better than either of you."

That stopped their snickering quickly as they headed to their own class, taking what enjoyment they could from this moment of peace while it lasted.

End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
