Chapter 5: The Road to Rustboro and a Legendary Meeting

Bored…

…so bored.

Why is walking so boring?

All I've seen after we left the preserve is nothing but forest. I don't think I've seen another Pokémon or human being since we started our journey through this place.

I miss having an actual conversation with a human. I took it for granted. I feel so lonely now-

"Sol."

Oh, right. I still have her.

*PLOP!*

I turned my head to see Absol's face planted into the ground, front legs tucked in while mooning her ass up in the air, not moving another inch. I sighed at this, "C'mon, Absol, get up."

"Soooooooooool…"

"Whaddya mean you don't wanna?" I asked.

"Sol, Absol, sooooooool…" She grumbled while her face was in the dirt.

"Hey, my feet hurt and I'm hungry too, you know. But I'm pretty sure we're at least a few days from Rustboro City, so come on, a few more feet and we'll rest." I tried to coerce her.

"Soooooooool!"

"Ugh…" I groaned again before walking towards, around, and behind her and tried lifting her up. "C'mon! Up! Get…! Your…! Sassy…! Butt…! Uuuuuup!" I grunted, trying to lift her up, but to no avail.

"Soooooooooooooooooooooooool!" Absol groaned louder into the dirt.

"How…! Are you…! So heavy!" I groaned, trying to pick her up.

"Absol…" I heard the telltale sign of electricity crackling.

Oh, no.

*BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!*

"OYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYA!"

Ughhhhh, God, whyyyyyyy?!

"Well…guess we can both just lay here…miserable…" I groaned, coughing a bit of smoke while my charred body laid on the ground with an occasional twitch from residual electrical impulses.

"Sol." Absol said, remaining in the same posture as before.

Okay, I guess a bit of R&R is in order…meaning setting up camp in the middle of nowhere…question is where?

"Oh, what the hell, not like it matters. So long as I'm not in another Pokémon's territory then we should be good." I said to myself…after pushing my electrified body up with a bit of a struggle. Totally gonna make Absol pay for this. "Come on, girl. Time to find a camping spot."

"Sol."

"You can nap all you want when we find a camping spot."

A grumbling whine left her throat before she forced herself rather lazily back onto her paws. Giving me a pouty glare, she trotted ahead while I followed after her. She is so high maintenance…

Didn't really take us long to search for a spot until we found a small clearing in the woods. Luckily, there were even some berry trees. Oran berries from the look and color of them.

"All right, we can camp here for a while then go in the morning. I'll set up the tent and you…" I gestured to Absol then at the trees holding the Oran Berries. "...will be collecting those for us."

"Sol…" The Disaster Pokémon simply walked over to said tree. Then all of a sudden, one of her legs glowed, before using said glowing leg to deliver a Mega Kick to the tree. Said tree shook and moments later, the Oran Berries dropped to the ground. With a snooty huff with her head held high, she went over to another part of the clearing and curled up to take a nap.

That cheeky little…

Inner peace. Inner peace…

Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale.

Okay, I think I'm good.

Swiftly, I collected up the berries and placed them in a Berry Case that Professor Birch gave me, placing them back in my bag before I shuffled over to the tent, catching my partner already laying down on her usual spot where my sleeping bag would be.

"Seriously?" Came my inquiry.

"Absol." She replied, stretching her body.

"Why do I put up with you?" I pondered, grumbling to myself.

"Absol." The Disaster Pokémon smirked wryly.

Why you little…

Okay, inner peace, inner peace again…

Know what, screw it. "Tickle attack!" I declared, jumping onto the feline-like Pokémon. And yes, that is an actual attack. Go look it up.

My fingers had already started wiggling over Absol's figure, hoping to find a weak spot that would get her to feel the full effects of my assault. However, much to my surprise and disappointment…she didn't have any. What the hell…?

"How are you not ticklish? Everything is ticklish!" I complained.

Again, Absol was trolling me with that smirk of hers. Well, if she's gonna be like that…

"Since you want to give me attitude, maybe I should cut back on your food amount." I remarked, snidely.

There. That did it! She twitched! Just goad her with food and she's gonna be eating at the palm of my hands.

"Hehehehe… I got you where I want you now!" I said, as my hands started wiggling all over Absol's body again.

This time, I got what counted as the equivalent of a laugh out of the Absol, which prompted me to continue my tickle attack. But something didn't feel right. Earlier, I didn't even get a chuckle out of her but when I threatened to shorten her food intake, she suddenly started to- Oh shit.

*C-C-R-R-R-ACKLE!*

No, don't you do it! Nonononono-!

*BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!*

"OYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYA!"

"I…hate you…so~ much!" I grumbled as not only was I charred to a crisp, but the tent too, leaving nothing but whatever remained of its framework.

"Sol…" Absol at least had the decency to look embarrassed.

"Well, thanks for zapping the tent. Now we get to sleep outside." I grumbled. Now what am I gonna-

*BONK!*

"Ow, what the-" I cried out when something fell on my head…or rather…a Pokémon fell on my head.

It was a small, brown Pokémon that resembled an acorn, having a beige, mask-like pattern covering its large black eyes, and it has two beige feet. It has a gray "cap" with a short stem on top of its head.

It was a Seedot.

"Uh…hi?" I greeted while rubbing the bump on my head. The Acorn Pokémon tilted its head curiously. Not gonna lie, that's kinda cute.

"Seedot." It spoke in that cutesy tone most Pokémon that are in their first stage would have.

"Where did you come from?" I pondered then looked up at the trees above me. I didn't realize that there were a bunch of Seedot hanging from where we're sitting. "You want me to help you back up with your friends?" I asked.

"Seedot!" It chirped its name rather happily.

"Okay." I said, standing up. I shook off all the soot I had on my person, then picked up the Acorn Pokémon to have it sit on top of my head. "Alright, let's see how we're gonna climb up." I pondered, examining the tree in front of me. It was a fairly decent sized tree, just barely widely enough to wrap my arms around to climb up.

"Sol?" Absol came up to me, confused.

"Trying to see how to get up this tree." I told her, rubbing my chin in contemplation. Then a thought came to me, "I know!" I grabbed the Poké Ball of my second team member and tossed it in the air, "Come out, Scyther!"

The Mantis Pokémon emerged with a cry of its species' name and looked up at me curiously. "Scy?"

"Hey, bud. Mind giving me a hand with this Seedot? It fell from the tree and wants to get back to its friends." I asked him.

"Scyther." The Bug-Type nodded.

With a grin, I took hold of Seedot and looked at it, "Alright, little guy, Scyther here will help you get back up to your friends. Are you ready?"

"Seedot!" It chimed then I carefully placed it in Scyther's arms as he flew up towards the tree and placed the Seedot on a branch near three more of its kind, giving it the chance to return to its original position.

"Nice work, Scyther." I told the Bug-Type.

"Scy~!" Scyther soaked in the praise.

"Anyways, we'll need to find proper shelter since Absol fried my only tent." I said while sending an accusing glare at the Disaster Pokémon, who looked away with an innocent whistle. "Yeah, keep playing dumb, you know what you did." I said, before looking up at Seedot, "I gotta get going buddy, no falling off of trees next time."

"Seedot! Seedot!" The Acorn Pokémon said cheerfully.

"Alright, you two. Let's get going." I told my sole two Pokémon that I have on hand.

"Sol/Scy!" Absol and Scyther chimed in unison.

Onward we go and through the forest, passing by trees and even the occasional Pokémon that poked their heads out to see the human and his Pokémon companions walking through the forest. It felt quite surreal. Staring up at creatures that I've only ever seen on television or on a computer screen. A pair of Zigzagoon ran across the forest floor while several Wurmple were crawling upwards or downwards on the trees. A small flock of Taillow flew overhead, probably on a migration period.

"Pretty amazing, right?" I asked my Pokémon with a grin as one curious Taillow flew down and landed on my shoulder. I greeted it with an affectionate rub on its chest, much to its enjoyment.

"Taillow, Tail, Taaaai~l…" The Tiny Swallow Pokémon crooned, lifting its leg up to scratch the air, like a dog liking its belly rubs.

"Hehe, I figured you'd like that, little guy. Still, you better head back to your flock. They're waiting for you." I told the Taillow while glancing up to see its flock waiting above in the trees.

"Absol?" My first Pokémon partner looked at me in confusion. Possibly wondering why I'm able to befriend Pokémon so easily.

"Let's just say I have a natural talent." I smiled.

"Sol…" The Disaster Pokémon murmured, before looking at the flock of Taillow waiting. She was staring rather intently for some reason… that is, until she licked her lips.

"Absol, no. Hey, hey! No. Do~n't do it, Absol. They're not food." I warned her.

Absol pouted, giving me a pleading look but knew that I wasn't going to budge, no matter what.

"Well, get going, little one." I told the Taillow as it flew off my shoulder and returned to its flock, which immediately took off into the air. "Guess no matter the dimension, animals will always be curious about me."

"Scyther! Scy, scyther!" Scyther suddenly cried out, getting my attention as he gestured to what looked like a log cabin.

"Nice find, Scyther. If a cabin is here, maybe there are people living there." I said with a grin. "Let's go!"

And so, the three of us made our way towards the log cabin. When we arrived, I knocked on the door.

*KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK*

"Helloooo~, anyone home?" I asked, but there was no answer. Strange. Are they probably out? Is the log cabin abandoned?

"Ab?" Absol nudged her head on the door…and it opened up.

"Unlocked?" I muttered, but then I remembered something. When it comes to doors suspiciously unlocked, either there's an intruder in there, or a murder has taken place. Ugh, great. Wait, maybe there's- "Is there a Ghost-Type in here about to try and scare me? If so, it's not gonna work."

Still no answer. Okay, now I'm starting to worry. This is really nerve-wracking.

"Well, we do need the shelter. Hopefully, I don't get murdered. That would suck." I said nonchalantly before walking inside…only to be met with a fully furnished cabin and a fire in the fireplace. The place looked empty. I have a feeling that someone is here. But why do I feel like I'm being watched?

"Scy?" Scyther was looking over the kitchen area, wondering if there was any food to eat.

"Sol!" Absol hopped onto a couch by the fire and curled up, basking in the warmth.

Something doesn't feel right though. A cabin like this with a roaring fire as well? This whole scenario makes me rather uneasy. I feel like I've been in this situation before, but I don't remember where! Ugh, this is making me go insane!

"Absol, I need you to sniff the place out." I spoke. "I feel there is something here. And it is very nagging."

Absol followed my order swiftly, hopping off her occupied sofa spot and began to sniff the air. This happened for at least three minutes before she paused and looked at me.

"What is it, girl?" I asked, feeling anxious.

Absol stared at me for a moment, before her paw pointed to a tall plant that seemed out of place.

Glancing at the out-of-place plant, I narrowed my eyes at it before swiftly declaring, "Scyther, use Fury Swipe on that plant!"

"Scyther!"

"NO, WAIT!"

"What the heck?" I exclaimed, hearing the sudden voice cry out while Scyther and Absol looked around in confusion. "Who said that?"

"I did!" The… tree said? The tree talked?!

"Okay, what? I must be going crazy. A tree just talked to me." I said dryly.

"Scyther, start cutting it to pieces."

"NO, DON'T!" The tree shouted, before it collapsed?! The tree was a freakin' cardboard piece! And there was a person behind it?!

The person in question was a middle-aged man that was bald with brown hair all around the back of his head. He was somewhat chubby, as he wore a simple white dress shirt with black dress pants and black shoes.

"Okay, start talking. Who are you and what are you doing pretending to be a plant?" I demanded, "Talk, or I'll have my companions force it out of you."

"Scy…" Scyther stepped forward, a small glint coming from the blades of his arms.

"Absol…" Absol gave the chubby man a menacing stare.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you like that! I live here!" The middle-aged man panicked. "I do escape room tricks for a living!"

"Wait," I paused. "An escape room? Is that why you didn't answer?"

"Yes." The middle-aged man sighed, "I'm sorry if I acted like some kind of stalker. But I wanted to at least test out the new tricks that I learned from overseas."

I sighed, "No harm done. And I'm sorry for basically breaking in and threatening you." I apologized. "Been having a rather crazy day lately."

"It's quite alright. Here, how about I make us some tea to relax both of our nerves." He offered.

"Thanks, I could definitely use a cup." I replied, patting the heads of Absol and Scyther to calm them down.

Once we settled down, the middle-aged man brewed some tea and the two of us sat down at the table.

"I suppose we should start with introductions. My name is Ivan. Puzzles are my specialty. And my home is actually a Trick House. I make various kinds of puzzle rooms for visitors to solve. If they solve, they are rewarded for their efforts with a prize."

"I'm Chris Holmes, aspiring Pokémon Trainer and future champion of the Hoenn League." I said with a little bit of a boast.

"Ah, a Pokémon Trainer, eh?" Ivan mused. "Have you just started out?"

'Pretty much, yeah. So far, I have my Absol and Scyther with me." I answered.

"My, my, rare Pokémon indeed." Ivan said, examining the two. "I'm surprised you haven't chosen a Starter. Have you perhaps come from a different region?"

In a manner of speaking, "I came from Viridian City in Kanto." I answered with a small white lie. "I didn't have the chance to join the Indigo Plateau, but I figured that I might try my hand at the Hoenn League."

"I see. That makes sense." Ivan nodded in understanding. "It's always good to try new things and new challenges."

"Yeah, and I'm planning on heading to Rustboro City to get my first badge." I said while sipping my own tea.

Ivan hummed before looking at my Pokémon. "Well, the Rustboro City Gym Leader is known to use Rock-Types. I don't doubt that your Absol and Scyther are quite strong but are you sure they'll be enough?"

I nodded, "Yep, especially with the training I plan on doing for them." My thoughts went to the Lightning Blade combo I came up with during my battle against Adam and Tyrunt.

Combo moves like that will be my secret weapon against any opponent and with what I have planned thanks to my knowledge on Pokémon, I might be able to get the Rustboro City Gym Badge easily.

"I see. It's good that you have the confidence, but don't get too overconfident." Ivan advised. "Otherwise, you'd end up like me."

"Huh?"

"I was once a Pokémon Trainer like yourself, but after getting so arrogant and overconfident in my skills… let's just say that being a Pokémon Trainer wasn't my calling in life."

"So…what happened to your Pokémon then?" I asked, curious.

"Oh, they're here. They help me rearrange the furniture and trick rooms whenever I come up with a new one." Ivan said. "Would you like to meet them?"

I couldn't resist the urge to grin at the prospect of meeting new Pokémon, "I would like that."

Ivan smiled as he went over to the cupboard and pulled out a drawer containing two Poké Balls before taking them out.

"Alright then, Machoke, Makuhita, come on out!" Ivan said, before throwing up the Poké Balls, which promptly opened, and streams of white energy came out before molding and shaping them into said Pokémon.

The first is a bipedal, humanoid Pokémon covered in blue-gray skin with a vaguely reptilian face. It had a short snout, narrow red eyes, and four pointed teeth visible inside its mouth. On top of its head are three brown ridges. Its arms are muscular with dark red, vertical stripes on them, and the lower part of its body has black markings that resemble briefs. It is always seen wearing a black and gold power-save belt resembling a championship belt. It possesses large pectoral muscles that protrude slightly over its belt.

The second was a bipedal Pokémon with a bulky build. Most of its body is yellow, but it has a black marking on its chest that extends around its neck. Its round hands resemble black boxing gloves, but its feet are yellow with two visible toes. On its cheeks are red, ring-shaped markings, and it has slit-like eyes. On top of its head is a knot, which causes it to resemble a punching bag.

"Cool." I said with awe before taking out my PokéDex just for information, scanning it over Machoke first.

["Machoke, the Superpower Pokémon. The evolved form of Machop, its thoroughly toned muscles possess the hardness of steel. It loves training above all else and voluntarily assists with tasks such as construction and clearing land."]

"Choke!" Machoke proudly showed off its muscles, causing Ivan to laugh whole-heartedly.

I chuckled at the sight then made my scan of Ivan's last Pokémon.

["Makuhita, the Guts Pokémon. It toughens up by slamming into thick trees over and over. It gains a sturdy body and dauntless spirit by enduring harsh training to withstand any attack."]

"Hita!" Makuhita tapped its belly in greeting.

"Pretty strong Pokémon. Guessing you used Fighting-Types?" I asked, putting away my PokéDex.

"Very kind of you, young man. And yes. I was once a Black Belt. They've been rather independent for themselves, whether they're doing chores or helping with rearranging the trick rooms. It's a satisfying life."

"I can respect that." I nodded before glancing at my own Pokémon. "You don't mind if I stay here for the night, do you? My Absol…kinda fried my tent." I said with a sheepish chuckle.

"Of course. I don't mind." Ivan smiled. "You're welcome to stay here for as long as you like."

"Thanks, you have no idea how much of a lifesaver you are right now. I can't even tell if I'm close to Rustboro City or not." I admitted.

"Ah, well, you're in luck! You're half a day's walk from the city." Ivan answered.

"Wait, really?" I blinked in confusion.

Ivan laughed good-naturedly, "Well, I have to make a living somewhere, right?"

"Fair point."

It was now late at night, and Ivan and his Pokémon were already asleep. Absol and Scyther took residence on the guest room floor, the former being all curled up while the latter laid prone. As for me, I was lying in bed, but for some reason, I couldn't sleep.

I didn't know why, nor did I fully understand it, but something in me told me that I shouldn't go to sleep yet.

"Maybe a small walk will help." I muttered to myself, shuffling to grab my sneakers and carefully snuck past my snoozing Pokémon to make my way outside the patio of the cabin.

It was really quiet, hearing the sounds of crickets (or the Pokémon version of them) echoing in the darkness and there was a full moon tonight.

There was something intriguing about the celestial body tonight. Maybe it was the glow? Or the feeling I get from it?

Or maybe it's the small body flying by-

Wait, what?!

Hold on, that was a Pokémon! It looked… cat-like while it was flying and… HOLY CRAP! DID I JUST SEE MEW?!

Nah, no way. There is no way that was a Mew. I must be hallucinating. Yep, this is probably a lucid dream. Yep, that's totally what this is.

It is totally not flying right at me. Nope. Not happening.

"Mew!"

OH MY GOD, IT IS MEW!

The pink-furred, cat-like Mythical Pokémon, Mew! Literally right in front of me!

"Hi?" I greeted, unsure.

"Mew!" It greeted with a happy coo as it flipped backwards in the air.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh, they're so cute! I just wanna hug it!

"What are you doing out here by your lonesome?" I pondered, trying and failing to resist the urge to pet Mew on the head.

"Mew?" The Mythical Pokémon tilted their head in confusion.

"Or are you just being cute by popping out of nowhere?" I asked, gently patting the small cat's head.

Mew's fur… so soft… ahhhh, it's really really so~ft…

"Mew~!" It purred, leaning in for more headpats.

OH MY GOD! BEST FREAKING DAY EVER!

"Who's a goooooood kitty~? You are~ yes you are~" I cooed, giving Mew more headpats, even scratching its chin. Mew seemed to like it immensely as it was scratching the air with its foot.

"Aaaaabsoooooool…"

Uh-oh…

Pausing in giving the adorable mythic kitty its much-needed petting, I slowly turned my head to what will undoubtedly be…

…my jealous, pouty-faced Absol. Who seems to be charging for a-

"Absol, nonononono! Don't do it! NO! NO!"

*BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!*

"OYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYA- Wait, I'm not being shocked. Huh?!" I looked towards Mew… who sent it right back at Absol?!

"Ab!?" Absol's eyes widened, receiving her own Electric attack at full blast due to Mew using Psychic. "ABABABABABABABABABABABABABABABABABABABA!"

Hah! Take that Absol! How'd ya like a taste of your own medicine?!

Now I feel bad. She's still my partner, after all. Even if she does repeatedly zap me for no reason other than to amuse her.

"Uh, Mew, maybe we can try not to fry my Absol? She's just jealous that I met a cuter kitty than her." I told the Legendary.

"Mew~" The Mythical Pokémon pouted.

"I know, but she's gotta learn that sharing is caring." I pointed out.

"Mew, mew." Mew complained.

I chuckled sheepishly, "When you say it like that, it makes it sound like I've got a jealous girlfriend."

"Sol!"

"Shaddap, you'll live!" I called out, before looking back at Mew. "Say… wanna come along with me?"

"Mew?" It tilted its head in confusion.

"Well, you obviously came to me for a reason. So, I figured…why not come along for the journey? I don't have to catch you or anything; you could just follow along or change into a different Pokémon if it will help." I explained my reasoning.

The Mythical Pokémon seemed to think on this for a moment, before finally giving me an answer by circling around my head and nuzzling my cheek.

I chuckled a bit and petted Mew on the head, "Glad to have another friend along for the ride. Welcome to the party, Mew."

Mew then flew towards my belt and… wait, what's it doing with one of my Poké Balls? Wait, huh?!

The next thing I knew, Mew pressed the button which enlarged then tapped it again before it opened up and the Poké Ball sucked Mew in!

"HUH?!" I gawked as it closed.

*WOBBLE, WOBBLE, WOBBLE, WOBBLE!*

*PING!*

…There's just no way I caught Mew- I JUST CAUGHT A MEW!?

A FUCKING LEGENDARY!?

WHAT KIND OF WEIRD SHIT IS THIS?!

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

"Ahhhh, what was that?!" May shouted in fear as she and the others suddenly heard some kind of bloodcurdling scream from far away.

"Is someone screaming?" Brock pondered aloud from his sleeping bag.

"Maybe it's a ghost!" Max said in a spooky tone to scare his sister.

"Don't say that, Max!" May freaked out.

"Think we should check it out?" Ash wondered.

"Pika…" The Electric Mouse Pokémon looked doubtful.

"It could just be the wind." Brock suggested, "Possibly a Pokémon playing a prank on another Trainer."

"But Ghost-type Pokémon don't usually haunt around here in these woods." Max pointed out.

"Remember that Tyrunt from two days back?" Brock pointed out. "That Pokémon was from a different region and a fossil Pokémon at that. There's no telling what kinds of Pokémon that aren't native to Hoenn might be out there."

"Well, I'm not sleeping until we figure out where that scream came from." May said stubbornly.

Ash, feeling an adventure coming along, felt wide awake. "Then let's pack up camp real quick and find the source of that scream!" He said in his normally optimistic manner.

"Seriously, Ash?" Max asked dryly.

"C'mon, if it's gonna put May at ease to find out where that scream came from, we might as well."

"Pikaaaaaaaa…" Pikachu muttered, before yawning.

"Besides, if it really is a Pokémon, I wanna catch it!" Ash said with a wide eager grin.

"There's just no stopping you, is there Ash…" Brock frowned with a sigh.

"Nope!"

"This isn't happening. This isn't happening. This isn't freaking happening!" I said, having a mild panic attack.

How the hell could a Legendary Pokémon just allow itself to be caught?! BY ME!?

"Absol…" I turned towards the Disaster Pokémon, and she had the dryest look on her face I had ever seen.

"Hey, don't give me that look! I didn't plan for this!" I exclaimed, waving around Mew's Poké Ball in comical distress. "You think I wanted to catch Mew?!"

"Sol."

"OH, COME ON! WORK WITH ME HERE!" I cried out in dismay.

"Ab." Absol looked away with a huff and a pout. Yeah, obviously still jealous.

"Man, why do you have to be such a pain?" I groaned. Still, guess I gotta deal with having a Legendary in my crew. "Come on out, Mew." Tossing the ball into the air, the device released the small Legendary Pokémon in the open.

"Mew, Mew!"

"Look, I-" Before I could say anything, Absol suddenly pounced towards Mew, to which the Mythical Pokémon dodged. "Hey, what the heck, Absol?!"

"Sol!" Absol cried out, grumpy.

"Mew?" The small cat's head tilted in confusion as it floated in the air.

"Absol, why did you do that?" I demanded, feeling a bit mad that my first Pokémon would decide to randomly attack another out of the blue. "I get that you might be jealous but that doesn't give you the right to just attack Mew!"

"Sol! Absol! Sol!"

"That's enough!" I shouted, raising my voice for the first time since I had her. "I've put up with this behavior of yours for too long! Until we get to Rustboro City, you're staying in your Poké Ball."

I then pointed it at Absol and the beam shot out, but Absol dodged it. "Get in your ball now!" I ordered.

"Sol!" She shouted, her eyes never leaving the confused form of Mew as it hovered near my head.

"Dammit, for once in your life, listen to me, Absol!" I growled, my patience already at its limit.

"SOL! ABSOL!" The Disaster Pokémon yelled once more before… running off.

"Absol, wait!" I shouted, but to no avail. Dammit, what the hell is wrong with her?!

I thought that…

…I thought we were past fighting each other…

…Did what I say…mean nothing to her?

"What is all that ruckus?" Ivan's voice groaned out as he came outside, along with Scyther who had just woken up as well. "What in blazes is- my word, is that a Mew?!"

"Sorry, Ivan, can't talk right now!" I said, passing by the man as I ran to the guest room and collected my bag. "Scyther, let's go! We gotta follow Absol!"

"Scyther! Scy!" The Mantis Pokémon said, before flying after me.

"Oh man, the forest at night is creepy…" May whimpered, hugging herself as Ash and the group had their flashlights on as they walked down a path.

"Not scared, are you, sis?" Max teased his older sister.

"Don't make me give you the noogie." May growled.

"Come on, you two. Can't you stop fighting for now?" Brock interjected, hoping to keep the siblings from getting into a fight.

"Yeah, May, I thought you wanted to find out where the scream came from so you could go back to sleep." Ash pointed out.

"Well, yeah, but…" May squeaked a bit when she heard the bushes rustle only to see nothing.

"D-Did you hear that?" May stuttered.

"Hear what? We don't hear anything." Brock said.

*RUSTLE*

"There it is again!"

Max gave the girl a dry look, "Seriously, May? I know you're freaked out but you don't have to try and scare us."

"Pi? Pika!" Pikachu jumped down from Ash's shoulder and got on all fours.

"What's the matter, Pikachu?" Ash asked, but then noticed Pikachu's cheeks crackle with electricity.

"Something tells me, we got trouble on the way." Brock said, recognizing the gesture from past adventures in Kanto and Johto. The four of them waited with bated breath, waiting for whatever was about to come at them. And then…

*WOOSH!*

an Absol runs past them. Red eyes glanced at Pikachu, who instantly recognized the Disaster Pokémon.

"Pika?!"

However, the Absol kept running.

"Hey, isn't that…" May got out.

"ABSOOOOOOOOOL!"

Moments earlier…

Dammit, I forgot that Absol is a fast runner. I'm already losing my breath.

Why the hell did she run off like that? And why was she acting that way when Mew came along?

Or was she even trying to attack Mew?

She is the Disaster Pokémon. Maybe she sensed something might happen to Mew and wanted to ward it off?

Could that be why she ran off?

Bah, I'll have to think about it later. Right now, I gotta find her!

"ABSOOOOOOOOOL!" I shouted. I then found myself at a clearing and… whoa, Ash and the gang?

"It's Holmes!" Ash gasped.

"Ash? May? Max? Brock?" I gaped. "What are you guys doing here?"

"We were camping by the road. Then we heard a scream and May didn't want to sleep until she knew what it was." Ash explained.

So, they heard me scream. Well, it can't get any worse.

"Ah, that… well… that was me." I spoke.

"That was you?" May said wide-eyed.

"Why were you screaming your head off?" Max pondered. "Did a Ghost Pokémon scare you?"

"No… that's not why. It's…" I trailed off, before sighing heavily, "Alright, guys and gal, I want none of you to freak out, okay?" I said, before saying. "Mew, come on out."

The Legendary Pokémon made its presence known by popping its head out from the collar of my shirt. "Mew?"

"MEW?!" The four kids shouted in surprise.

"Wow, I can't believe it, a real Mew!" Max shouted with sparkling eyes.

"Yeah…" I groaned, feeling like this would be a normal occurrence nowadays.

"How did you-" Brock asked.

"It… actually let itself be caught."

"WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!" Ash yelled in surprise.

I sighed, "Look, as much as I want to continue this conversation, I need to find Absol. She ran off again."

"You mean Absol that literally just went past us?" Max asked.

"Yeah! Where did she go?!" I urged.

"She…went that way." May gestured to a direction that I focused on.

"Thanks, later!" I exclaimed, running in the direction that the girl had pointed at.

"Should we go after him?" Ash asked.

"You've never been one to leave a Pokémon or a Trainer in trouble." Brock gave his long-time friend a knowing grin.

"Yeah, I got that much. Come on!" Ash said, before running off with the rest following him.

"This night just keeps getting better…" May groaned.

Come on, come on! Where are you, Absol?

"Scyther, do you see her?" I asked the Bug-Type.

"Scyther… Scy…" The Mantis Pokémon shook his head. Damn, she must be further up ahead.

"Scout up ahead. If you see her, get back to me, okay?" I told Scyther.

"Scyther!" The Mantis Pokémon then flew off ahead.

"Mew?" I felt the small body of Mew moving around under my clothes before its head pops out to look up at me.

"Don't worry, Mew. Just gotta find Absol. After that, I'll scold her for running away and then we'll take a nice long nap." I assured the Legendary by giving it a small scratch behind its ears.

"Mew~"

Seriously, why is it so gosh darn cute?!

"Scy!" I heard the cry of my Scyther as he flew overhead.

"Did you find Absol?" I called out.

"Scyther, scy, scyther!" The Mantis Pokémon gestured with his arm blades in the direction behind him.

"Good work, Scyther!" I said before looking down at Mew, still nestled within my shirt. "Hold on tight now."

"Mew!"

I continued following Scyther towards where Absol might be. When we arrived, lo and behold, there she was, and she didn't look happy either.

"Alright, Absol. Enough with your hissy fits." I spoke. "It's over."

"Sol." She shot back then turned around and started staring at something.

"Okay, what the hell are you-" I was about to walk up to Absol until something stopped me. A cold chill went down my spine. Something definitely wasn't right.

Suddenly, I heard several growls coming from all around me and, to my slowly growing terror, several pairs of glowing red eyes appeared in the shadows of the trees.

"Scyther?"

"Scy! Scy!" The Mantis Pokémon stayed close to me in order to guard me, ready for whatever was gonna come at us.

Stepping out of the shadows were two different canine based Pokémon. The darkness gives their black coats of fur a sinister presence..

The first group of Pokémon were canine-like. Their fur is mostly short and gray, but their lower legs, tail, and two thick shaggy strips starting behind its eyes and running the length of its body are black. They had dark, triangular streak patterns below its eyes, which are red with yellow sclera. Their ears are rhombus-shaped with dark insides, their noses are red, and they have gray paw pads.

The second group of Pokémon were also canine-like, with black fur, long orange snouts, and orange underbellies. They have small red eyes and black noses. Around their necks are a white band with a small skull-shaped pendant on their throats. There are also two white bands on each of their ankles, as well as three rib-like ridges on their backs. They all have long, skinny tails with a triangular tip and three clawed toes on each paw. Atop their heads are a pair of long, curved gray horns.

These were Mightyena and Houndooms respectively.

"Oh, great. A pack of wild dogs…with menacing eyes." I said dryly as Mew looked at the Mightyena and Houndoom packs in confusion. "Wait, since when do these mutts ever travel in- Oh, shit. I know who owns them."

"Target M spotted. In the company of a Trainer and their Pokémon. Orders?" A male voice spoke before a group of people dressed in familiar red and black outfits with a stylized M emerged behind the canine Pokémon pack.

"Retrieve the target. Eliminate all witnesses." Another male voice spoke.

"Team Magma…" I muttered under my breath. Well, fuckin' A… No wonder Absol was acting weird. Team Magma was following Mew the whole time. She wasn't jealous of Mew at all. Well, okay, maybe that was still partly true, but you get the idea. Still, why go after Mew when their MO is all about Groudon?

Wait, Mew has the DNA of all Pokémon. Does that include Legendaries?! Okay, this is worse than I thought. Gotta keep Mew safe.

"Alright, you Team Magma pricks, wanna tell me why you're here to clap me?" I demanded.

One of the Magma Grunts, the leader of the team I'm guessing, huffed, "So, you know who we are? Hmph, doesn't matter. You won't live to talk about it. Capture the Mew! Eliminate the Trainer and his Pokémon!" He ordered.

"Sir!" The other Grunts gave affirmative responses before their individual Mightyena and Houndooms moved towards me.

I clicked my teeth in annoyance, "Absol, you still with me?" I asked my partner.

"Sol."

"Good. Use Lightning Blade!"

Channeling Electric and Psychic energy into her horn, Absol charged at the group of Magma-controlled Pokémon.

"Scyther, help her out with Steel Wing!" I added in.

The Mantis Pokémon's wings glowed with Steel-Type energy before flying towards a Mightyena, smacking them with it, and sending them flying.

"Mew, I need you to listen carefully." I whispered to the Legendary Pokémon nestled in my shirt. "If it looks like I'm about to be overwhelmed, I need you to run as far away as you can."

"Mew! Mew, Mew!"

"I know, but you're the one they want. Who knows what they'll do to you if they catch you." I said.

Mew gave me a sad look, "Mew…"

I reassured Mew with a grin, "Hey, I'll be fine. These Magma losers haven't battled a Trainer like me."

"Mew…"

"Mightyena, use Shadow Ball!"

"Houndoom, Flamethrower!"

"Absol, Scyther, dodge, then retaliate with your Shadow Ball, then use X-Scissor!" I commanded.

The two hounds unleashed a ball of dark energy and streams of flames while the Mantis and Disaster Pokémon dodged the attacks. Absol then unleashed his Shadow Ball then used X-Scissor to not only slash the Shadow Ball that Absol shot, but split it into four in order to hit multiple targets!

Hey, not bad! I gotta give that one a name! Hmmmm… Shadow Scissors, yeah, that has a nice ring to it!

The four shots from the split Shadow Ball struck the Mightyena and Houndooms, knocking them back. The Magma Grunts that owned those Pokémon had returned them to their Poké Balls.

"Keep up the pressure! Absol, use Thunder! Scyther, use Night Slash!" I ordered.

"Absooooooooooooool!" The Disaster Pokémon generated electricity from her body and shot it towards more Mightyena and Houndoom.

"Scyyyyyy!" Scyther's arms blades gleamed with Dark-Type energy before flying towards the Magma Pokémon and delivering a multitude of slash attacks.

"Houndoom, Fire Blast!"

"Pikachu, use Thunderbolt!"

HUH?!

"Piiiiiiiiiiikachuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!"

A bolt of lightning came down, intercepting the Fire Blast which had been launched at my blindside, knocking the attacking Houndoom back into its trainer. I looked to my left and saw Ash and company running towards me.

"Guys!" I exclaimed.

"You okay, Holmes?" Ash asked.

"Yeah, thanks to your Pikachu." I said, then looked at the Electric Mouse. "Thanks for the save, buddy. I owe ya one."

"Pika, pika!" Pikachu chimed as he stood beside my own Pokémon.

"Another one?" A Magma Grunt pondered in surprise.

"It doesn't matter. Just another witness to take care of." The leader of the Magma team stated. "Houndoom, Flamethrower!"

"Counter that with Shadow Ball, Absol!" I ordered.

Houndoom unleashed its Flamethrower but Absol had already released her Shadow Ball, causing the resulting collision to explode violently.

"Pikachu, use Quick Attack!" Ash commanded.

"Forretress, help out and use Rapid Spin!" Brock shouted, throwing his Poké Ball. It opened up revealing a spherical insectoid Pokémon with no visible limbs, the upper and lower halves of its body capped by bumpy steel plates. The outer plates have zigzagging ridges that open along its back and front, revealing its smooth, red inner shell. The inner shell is punctuated by four cylindrical spikes, each tapering to an open point. Between the spikes, the inner shell opens along a straight line to reveal its eyes, which are round with large pupils. Whatever else lies inside its shell is unknown.

"Forretress!" The Bagworm Pokémon said, as it closed its sturdy shell and started spinning rapidly, using the pack of Houndoom and Mightyena to bounce off like a pinball in a machine.

Pikachu followed up on the attack by using the speed boost granted by Quick Attack to instantly slam his head right into the side of a Mightyena.

I furrowed my brow in thought. Even though the added assistance of Ash and Brock is a big help, there are still too many Magma Grunts. We need to take all of them out but how can- Wait, that's it!

"Absol, ready for another combination move?" I asked my partner with a smirk.

"Wait, what?" Ash got out.

"What's he up to now?" Max pondered.

"Absol, charge up a Hyper Beam but I want you to add Dark-Type energy into it!" I commanded.

As if knowing what I desired, Absol's eyes gleamed before she opened her mouth, charging a Hyper Beam while powering her Dark-Type energy into the gathering energy.

Not enough. I need more. "More energy, Absol! Pour everything you got!"

Absol obeyed, this time as she poured her energy into the orb, the Disaster Pokémon's eyes glowed brighter as a dark aura surrounded her. The gathered energy grew bigger and bigger.

Nearly there. I just need-

"Like we'll let you continue your little strategy. Everyone, attack Absol!" The Magma Grunt leader commanded.

Everyone turned their attention to her, but then, the unexpected happened as Mew came out from hiding under my shirt! What's it doing? Mew's eyes suddenly glowed before it launched a Psybeam attack on Absol's attack, amplifying it even more!

The combination of Dark-Type and Psychic-Type energy, two forces that should cancel each other out, were now working in perfect harmony.

And it's just what I need!

"Here it is!" I declared, bringing my hands together in a gesture I had only seen in one particular anime related to golden-haired fighters. "Absol's new special move! Eclipse Cannon!"

"AAAAAAABSOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLL!" Absol unleashed the powered up Hyper Beam, now dubbed Eclipse Cannon, right into the crowd of Team Magma Pokémon, causing a powerful explosion to literally tear the air and forest in a cloud of smoke.

"WOW!" Max gawked at the sheer power.

"Don't you think that's going a bit overboard?!" May cried out.

"Nope!" I answered with a wide, toothy grin after witnessing my partner unleash such devastating power upon Team Magma.

When the smoke cleared, it revealed the battered and unconscious bodies of all the Mightyena and Houndooms on the ground.

"Damn…" The Magma Grunt leader cursed before quickly ordering, "Recover and retreat!"

Absol looked ready to pursue but I placed a hand on her head, getting her to look up at me. "No. Let them go." I told her. Absol grunted as Team Magma fled for their lives.

"Who were those guys?" Max asked.

"Team Magma." I answered. "They're a terrorist organization bent on expanding land by any means necessary."

"Hey, I remember those guys! May and I battled them back in Oldale Town!" Ash said in realization.

Right, I forgot about that part…

"Then you should know that they're up to no good. Their counterparts, Team Aqua, are just as bad. They want to drown everyone for whatever reason." I added.

"They sound nuts." May grimaced.

"Eco-terrorists always are." I stated. "Speaking of which, we should probably either make a fire or return to the cabin I was at."

"There's a cabin here?" Brock asked.

"With actual beds?" May asked hopefully.

"Yup."

"Mew!"

Oh right, Mew's still here.

"Thanks a lot for the help, Mew." I told the small feline by rewarding it with chin scratches. "Without that boost, we never would have been able to beat back Team Magma."

"Mew." The Mythical Pokémon cooed before flying around me once more and going back to its Poké Ball. Oh yeah, forgot… I STILL CAUGHT A FREAKIN' MEW!

"So you really did catch it!" Ash said with awe.

"Yeah…" I groaned. "But I won't be using it."

"Why not?" Max pondered, shocked. "Mew is a Legendary Pokémon! With it, you'll be able to beat the whole Hoenn League easily!"

"That's precisely why." I said with a frown. "I want to win the league using my skills. Not by relying on the help of what's basically a god. It insults the other Trainers and their Pokémon for all their hard work. That's why I won't ever use Mew in a battle."

"I can understand that." Ash said, smiling. "I don't think I'd be able to look in the mirror if I won using a Legendary Pokémon."

"So…are you going to release it?" May inquired.

Looking down at Mew's ball, I pondered over what the girl had said. "It came to me and accepted me for a reason. Maybe I won't figure it out now but I'll try to be a good Trainer for it. And if need be, when the time comes for us to go our separate ways, I'll let it go on its own path. But for now…" A grin wormed its way onto my face. "...I think I'll take Mew along with me."

"Man, talk about lucky," Max said. "I bet your Absol was-"

*C-C-CRACKLE!*

Max flinched, seeing Absol flickering with electricity as if she asked, "What was that?"

"Uh, nevermind." Max squeaked.

"Don't worry, Max. I know what you meant." I said, nodding in understanding.

"Can we go over to that cabin you were talking about? I really wanna sleep now." May groaned.

"Yeah, I think after all the trouble we went through tonight, sleep is definitely needed." I said with a chuckle.

As I led Ash and company towards the cabin, Absol was walking alongside me. "So uh… Absol-"

"Sol. Absol."

"Wait, you're not jealous of Mew?" I asked.

"Sol…" Absol deadpanned.

"So you are…" I sweat dropped. "Well, I just wanna say, I'm sorry for snapping at you."

"Sol?"

"I guess I just got frustrated with how everything has been happening today and I took it out on you. You didn't deserve any of that." I said sheepishly while rubbing the Disaster Pokémon on the head.

"Sol…" The Disaster Pokémon seemingly smiled at me, which I smiled back, but then I felt the tingling sensation on my hand, as her smile now became trollish. "You little-!"

*BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!*

"OYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYA!"

My life is nothing but pain…

"Hehe, I guess some things never change, huh?" Ash chuckled.

…I'm still in so much agony.

Meanwhile at Team Magma HQ, the leader of the ground-centric eco-terrorist group, Maxie had just been given the report from one of his field teams.

"You mean to tell me that you failed to recover Target M?" Maxie frowned, glaring at the image of the Magma Grunt leader who flinched.

"Yes, sir. I have no excuse for this setback." The Grunt replied, keeping his head down. "But there is a positive outcome out of this, Leader Maxie."

Maxie narrowed his eyes, "Well? Don't keep me in suspense. Speak."

"Target M was in the company of Pokémon Trainer with an Absol and a Scyther. I will forward the image over to you, immediately." The Magma Grunt leader brought up a tablet and touched the screen a few times before several images appeared for Maxie to see.

The Team Magma Leader glared at each of the images, focusing on how a single Absol and a Scyther managed to defeat a good number of Mightyena and Houndooms. Then he focused a little too much on the powerful Eclipse Cannon unleashed by Absol, which wiped out the remaining Grunts' Pokémon. Finally, his gaze landed on the Trainer commanding the Absol and Scyther.

A brown-haired young man wearing glasses and possessing the most confident smirk on his face, almost as if he were personally mocking Maxie by getting in his way.

"Well, it seems this can be salvaged." Maxie said, putting the face to memory. "Return to base immediately for debriefing. Then I want you to send this image to all our operatives out on the field. I want to know this Trainer's name and where he intends to go."

None shall stand in the way of Team Magma's goal.

A/N: And that shall be the end of the chapter.

So, yes, the MC has now, unfortunately, caught a Mew even if he didn't mean to. Not only that, but he has now been caught in the crosshairs of Team Magma. What sort of trouble could he be landing himself in as he continues his Pokémon journey?

As for using Mew in battles, while I can understand using such an OP Legendary just to crush everyone, it's not as fun as beating an opponent with your own strength. But I will say this, Mew will be integral to the plot. It'll just be a tag-along who likes the MC.

Just to be clear, Mew is not part of the official team.
