Terrors
The late night of the city actually gave people some respite from their nightmares that had occurred so far. The regular criminals and even some of the Super-Villains that still lingered in the city were actually lying low as even they were unnerved by the Symbiote Invasion attempts. Likely due to the recent defeat, the Symbiotes were also laying though, allowing the Avengers, their families and loved ones, time to rest at least. They were still concerned about their safety, since the Symbiotes knew their identities it was clear that their homes might be targeted if they continued to stay there as such they were still staying in their hidden base. However temporary their reprieve may be, they wanted to take it for all it was worth and were using all available sleeping quarters. Holly had some advantage over the others in that Kelsey was too young for a boyfriend or girlfriend, so she didn't have to be as wary as the others, seeing their children planning to share their beds with their respective beloveds, resulting in a fair few serious talks. All while Kelsey and Holly watched in amusement.
Kelsey did however have one request. "Mom, when I start dating, don't embarrass me like that please."
Holly just laughed. "No promises."
In the end things calmed down however and everyone retired to bed.
The night did not go peacefully however as before long moaning could be heard, the sounds of someone in distress. It did not take long for the source to be identified however as soon the others who had been awoken by the noise, heard Jessica's voice.
"Jake, Jake wake up, it's okay, it's just a dream, Jake, please-"
They all were up and hurrying through to Jake's bed which he was sharing with Jessica. Mike and Will were naturally the first there and instantly noted their son's distress as he thrashed around in the bed, clearly in the grips of some terrible nightmare. Jessica had already got out of the bed and was kneeling by the bed, trying to wake Jake up. Mike and Will hurried forwards and spoke up.
"Jake, c'mon, it's okay buddy." Mike said, gently shaking his son's shoulder.
Jake groaned and then they got a hint as to his nightmare. "No, no, don't touch them!"
"Jake!" Will cried out.
He was shocked and horrified at hearing that his son was clearly seeing someone, likely Venom, attacking people, most likely them, the ones he cared about. He was always proud of Jake's caring nature and big heart, but it was clearly detrimental here. It was leaving him vulnerable to fears of all those he cared about being hurt. But then, to their partial relief, her jerked awake, gasping and looking around wildly.
He slowly began to control himself, biting his lip as he spotted Jess and his parents by his bed, as well as the others further back.
"You guys, I...sorry." He managed, his voice shaky.
"Dude, don't." Eddie said gently. "We're worried about you."
Jake grimaced, he hated situations like this, being seen in a position of weakness. But his friends had all told him that he didn't have to be strong all the time. They all looked up to him, but he was only human and they respected that and didn't expect him to always be the strong leader.
"Jake, are you...was it Venom?" Will asked softly.
Jake nodded. "Y-yeah…"
Mike sat down on the edge of the bed and gently hugged his son. "It's gonna be alright, we're all here and we're all gonna get through this."
"I just, I can't stand the thought of any of you, of him getting his hands on any of you and, and-" Jake began.
Will joined his husband, comforting their son.
"I know. But we can get through this and we can overcome these things. We need to be strong after all, but that doesn't make us invincible." He explained. "But so long as we're together, we've got a better chance."
"Yeah." Mike agreed. "No matter what happens, you'll always have us."
Jake slowly nodded. "I...yeah, yeah."
He took a deep breath and began to calm down, reassuring the others, now they all felt more relaxed, more able to get to sleep and rest, to be ready for further battles. Things weren't done yet, but they still held on to hope.
With peace returned, the others returning to bed, Jess smiled softly to Jake and gently joined him back in the bed, now she was the one holding and reassuring him, Jake smiled too, relieved that things were indeed hopeful again.
"I'm here Jake, no matter what happens." She told him softly. "I may not have superpowers like you, but I'm not someone who gives up and I will stand with you, no matter what."
Jake let out a soft sigh of relief. "I think I'm finally able to, to have faith in all that now...thank you."
They kissed softly before finally getting back to sleep again.
