CHAPTER 2
"It's not just that our spouses are missing. What's worse is that I'm human and so are you, Caroline."
"What?" Caroline croaked.
"Listen, what do you hear?"
Nothing.
"Touch you teeth."
Caroline put a hand on her mouth as she realised she didn't have fangs anymore.
"Try to vamp-speed downstairs."
Caroline tried but only moved a little in human speed. She wanted to cry out.
"Caroline, do you feel thirsty for blood?" Elijah was beginning to get impatient with her.
"Oh, no, this is very bad." Caroline concluded. Because if they were not magical at all and something magical had happened to them, they'd both be completely useless against that threat.
"Yes, it is." Elijah agreed as he went to pour himself a drink. Elijah had already figured out that not their spouses had disappeared, but they themselves had been moved to some kind of a parallel world, made human by stripping them of their only power – vampirism and left them completely defenceless.
Elijah heard a glass break and looked at Caroline in surprise who had jumped at the sound of it.
"Elijah…"She ran over to him and grabbed his hand and Elijah realised that moment that he had broken the glass and his palm was now bleeding heavily.
"Go, get you hand under cold tap water, while I'll go get the bandages." Caroline instructed him.
Elijah smiled through the pain of her taking charge like that. Usually he wouldn't let anyone talk to him like that, but Caroline was family and they were both equal humans now.
"Yes, ma'am."
With fascination he watched as she bandaged his hand so skilfully.
"How did you know how to do that?" Elijah asked when he finally got his hand back.
Caroline gave him a little smile and said, "Sheriff's daughter, remember?"
"Yeah, but-"
Caroline put an index finger on his lips and said, "Shh, I just know that stuff, okay. Just accept it and move on."
Elijah knew there was more to the story but decided to let it go for now. So he nodded and she pulled her hand away.
"How are you feeling?" Caroline then proceeded to ask her patient.
"I'm at the loss for words, actually. And a little lightheaded."
"Well for the first part I can't do anything about, but for the second part, I can make you something to eat. What are you in mood for?"
"Just a sandwich I guess. Don't trouble yourself over it."
"It's no trouble, I like to cook. If you want a sandwich, let me just make you a warm sandwich," Caroline announced and with a smile, Elijah agreed to it.
Elijah had fallen a bit lost in thought when suddenly a frying pan fell on the ground and Caroline holding on to her fingers, was hissing in pain.
"Caroline," Elijah jumped up from the chair and ran over to her.
"Shh, let me just heal-"
Then Elijah closed his eyes for a moment in frustration and the pushed everything on the table on to the floor in anger
"Well, that's just like someone else I know."
Staring away from her, he ignored her comment and said, "I can't be just a mere human, Caroline, I can't. Who's going to protect you here?"
"Protect me against what exactly, frying pans?"
"You know very well we don't have any idea what this place is. For all we know the supernaturals could be hiding." Elijah raised his voice at her.
"Yeah, I'm sure they are under our beds right now, ready to kill us in the middle of our sleep." Caroline couldn't help but laugh at his theory. Elijah just shot daggers at her.
"The point is that we have no idea WHAT this place is and we can't protect and defend ourselves against anything anymore." He sighed as he lowered his voice seeing her get teary eyed.
"Maybe you are right, but they didn't wipe us of the knowledge, we still, you still know a lot about the supernatural world. We can use that to our adventage, when there are any threats hiding somewhere like Kai hid from Bonnie and Damon." Caroline explained and then realised, "Prison world, Elijah, what if it's a prison word created of today?"
"Prison world? That does sound oddly familiar."
After Caroline has told Elijah everything that he knew of prison worlds, he concluded that it may very well be that way, but she shouldn't get excited because they were still just mere humans and there was no Bennet witch. "What would we do with that knowledge, is beyond me."
"How about protection."
"What?"
"What if there is another Kai spying on us right now and-"
"Caroline, Caroline," he grabbed her arms, "Perspective now. You are jumping on to tomorrow's or maybe next months' problems. Right now we need to find confirmation that this is Gemini and Bennett witches' created prison world or something else entirely. And for that we need to go to sleep to see if the day repeats itself tomorrow."
Caroline just nodded.
"So let's go, I'll see that you get to the safety of your room and in your bed and then I'll do the same in my bedroom which isn't far from yours, okay?"
"Okay."
SO hand in hand, they went to their bedrooms and quickly fell asleep.
In the meantime, Freya had just finished her 25th location spell of the night when Davina entered the premises with Kol.
"So good of you to join us, five hours after we texted, emailed, called and used magic to get a hold of you, Davina." Klaus sarcastically told Davina about being glad she finally showed up.
"Look, Klaus, I don't want to be here and I have a life outside of this family of yours. But I love Caroline and for her and for Kol who also adores the two of you, I'm doing this." She turned to her sister-in-law,
"So, Freya, where are you with location spells?"
"Nowhere, but I'm glad you are here. Maybe with added enforcements we can get somewhere."
An hour later it was the same, they didn't have a location, they didn't even know if Elijah and Caroline existed in the same universe anymore, whether they we dead or not, because the location spell just told either they were heavily cloaked or they were dead.
"Damn it." Klaus roared in anger and frustration while Hayley cried.
But in the most hopeless of situations someone always stepped up in that family and this time it was Kol.
"Try to get yourself together, because we are going to Egypt, Nik. There's a witch I know and coincidentally she knows Elijah too. And if anyone knows what happened to Caroline and Elijah, it's her."
"And what she can do that Freya and Davina couldn't," Hayley asked him.
"Plenty, think of her as a witch with Phd in Locator Spells. Like I said, if anyone knows what happened to them, it's Lila.
On the jet, Davina quietly asked Kol about the background of this witch.
"So, she lives in Egypt, that witch of yours?" She danced around what she really wanted to ask.
"No, darling, I haven't banged her, if that's what you are asking me. She's a 14 year old prodigy having a vacation with her parents there right now." Kol explained and Davina laughed. Hayley who had heard the exchange and couldn't help but chuckle, which made Davina shoot daggers at her.
