Chapter 2

6 Months Later

Jackie found herself in a new city with a new fire department. She was now a firefighter and paramedic for Colorado Springs as her friend Oma talked her into taking a new job in a new state. Sporting her dark blue uniform, she just got off work and swung by the grocery store for some things for her new apartment. She walked the aisles with a basket in hand. She was looking at the coffee selection when she heard a familiar voice from behind.

"I need a can of coffee, Jack." Daniel stated. He stood with Jack in the aisle both in civilian attire of jeans and jackets.

"That's a big can of coffee, Daniel." he mentioned as Daniel went for a larger can.

He rolled his eyes and he picked up the bigger can of ground coffee and placed it in the cart.

Jackie turned around and her eyes landed on Daniel. She stood beside herself for a moment. He wore glasses but it was still him. She caught her breath. "Daniel." she spoke as calmly as she could. Best to her knowledge he simply walked out on her and never came back.

Daniel looked upon the face. He squinted for she looked familiar but he could not place her due to the amnesia. "I know you for somewhere." he pondered.

"Somewhere?" she asked unbelieving. Was he playing stupid? Putting on an act.

"You look familiar." he confessed.

Jack stood wondering. "You know any firefighter's, Daniel?"

"I don't know." he raked his brain.

"She knows you." he observed.

"Jack!" he huffed annoyed.

"Oh, so you are the Air Force Colonel." she figured.

"I'm a colonel in the Air Force." he admitted. He wondered how she knew.

She asked. "You seen Shrek?"

He grinned. "Loved it! Great songs. I can relate."

Daniel started rubbing his head as he got a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach. "You are important to me." he clenched his teeth trying to remember.

"I thought I was. I guess I wasn't." she shrugged rather upset. "Least you could have done is left a letter. You know. A Dear Jane letter. Just disappear like that. Kind of…rude." she told him.

He asked. "When did I disappear?"

"Six months ago." she stated a bit miffed.

Jack stated. "Hey! He doesn't remember anything. Okay. Ease up on him."

"What do you mean he doesn't remember?" she asked.

"He doesn't remember the last year." he told her. "Where was he six months ago? It's a bit of a mystery to us."

"He was with me in Rochester, New York." she told him. "Oma introduced him to me."

"Oma!" Daniel gasped.

Jack rolled his eyes. "Great! Just what we need. Them guys."

Daniel stated. "If Oma introduced me to her it was for a reason, Jack."

"Do you remember the reason?" he asked.

He admitted. "No!"

"Oma works in mysterious ways." she had to admit. "She insisted I move here and take a new job. Guess she knew you were here, Daniel."

"What's your name?" Daniel pleaded. "I know that I know you but I don't remember."

"Jackie Converse." she stated. "How come you don't remember? How did you get amnesia?"

"That's complicated." he sighed.

She asked. "Anything to do with that big ring that looks like a swimming pool standing on its side? I kept dreaming about that thing. Even after you just up and disappeared on me. I kept seeing you go through it."

He stood absolutely taken. "You dreamed about the gate?"

Jack looked at her. "Can you give me a call and we can talk about where Daniel was for the last year?"

"I suppose." she agreed.

"I'll give you my number." Jack told her.

"Okay." she agreed. She asked him. "Is Daniel okay?"

He stated. "He could be better."

Later

Jack returned to the base the next morning. He had a long talk on the phone with Jackie and she told him about the time she spent with Daniel in New York. He immediately went to Daniel's office. "Daniel." he greeted upon walking in.

Daniel had been raking his brain trying to figure out what happened all night long. He was curious and fearful at the same time. He asked. "You talk to her?"

He nodded, "Had a nice long conversation with her. You were doing your thing when you were with her." He came closer to the table. "She said you would come over to her apartment regularly and you guys would have dinner, watch a movie. You were close to her. You told you were taking time off from work and you never took her to wherever you were staying. Always at her place. You were dating her, Daniel."

"Did she say anything else?" he asked for his instinct told him there was more.

"Just you were her boyfriend. You slept with her once and then…poof…you were gone." he stated. He then confessed. "I wonder how you pulled that off."

"I guess I just left." he shrugged.

"No," he shook his head. "Sleeping with her."

"Jack!" he rolled his eyes.

"It's not like you had a body, Daniel." he reminded him.

He paused and pondered. "I wonder if that's why I was sent back." he then turned and grabbed a book from a the shelf. He opened the book and placed it before Jack. "In ancient times giants were the result of angels coming down to earth and mating with mortal women. If the ascended are…Angels… for a lack of a better term…then, maybe that's a golden rule. Don't sleep with mortal women."

Jack stated. "It was six months ago. I don't think she's pregnant. Apparently, she went to get you a cup of coffee, came back and your where just…gone."

"The others could have snatched me out and then sent me back…naked…" he added rather miffed.

Jack confessed. "I'm surprised you didn't just ascend her too."

He suddenly recalled. "She would have ascend on her own and if she failed she would die."

Jack's eyebrow lifted. "You remember."

"I remember she could have died and I wouldn't risk her life." he nodded. "There is something else I knew about her though. Something important."

Jack asked "What?"

"I don't remember." he miffed. "Damn! It was important enough for Oma to introduce us and obviously I stayed with her for months."

"Nearly six months." he informed. "You had a thing going. While you were doing your thing." he remarked with a pondering expression. "I still wonder how you…" he tailed off.

"Jack! Drop it." he snorted annoyed. "I must have loved her. I had to have. I don't go around sleeping with every girl I see." He glanced at Jack who gave him an expecting look.

"What?" he asked.

"Just about every alien chick throws themselves at you." he reminded him.

He rolled his eyes annoyed.

Jack told him. "I'm having her come in and speak to Hammond. She told me about the dreams she has and how she can sometimes see things before it happens. Hammond wants to test her for a remote viewing program."

"Remote viewing?" he asked.

Jack informed. "It some kind of intel gathering program."

Daniel wondered. "Does it work?"

"I don't know." he shrugged.
