[Ponyboy's POV]

"Let's go boys, we don't have all day!" I quickly finished tying my shoes and shut my locker, not wanting to be forced to run extra laps by my coach. Today's track practice was supposed to be relatively easy, and I was hoping to be done by 4:00 so I could get a jump start on my homework.

As I stepped onto the track and began stretching, I couldn't help but smile at the sight of Two-Bit sitting on the bleachers attempting to sweet-talk two blondes. He was obviously failing miserably, but I figured he needed some way to entertain himself until practice was over. He usually stuck around to give me a ride since Darry didn't like me walking home alone.

Today's practice wasn't too bad, just as I'd hoped, and after 45 minutes it looked like I was close to getting to leave. "Hold on boys, before you go let's do one last sprint drill!" I inwardly groaned at the words of my coach. Distance was my strong suit, but coach wanted us to be ready to compete in any event if needed be.

I could tell nobody was thrilled as we lined up for the drill, so I figured I'd line up first just to get it over with. My coach explained the points I'd need to sprint back and forth from as I got into position and blew his whistle once I was ready. I took off as fast as I could, reaching the first point easily. As I turned around to run back, though, my left foot seemed to get caught on something.

My shoelace. The one I'd hastily finished tying in the locker room.

Oh shit was all I could think before I came crashing down.
