A/N: I do not own Gilmore Girls. Credit for song lyrics: Yo La Tengo and Carole King. I have been working on this for a while. The previous two chapters were to get here. I do plan to continue the story. But I feel like we needed to get Luke and Lorelai married. My personal life is going to get busy again for a bit. Thank you for reading. I do appreciate the reviews and comments. I hope that you enjoy the interactions. I do so love to write the dialogue.
Rory used the maid's key to open her mother's door at the Dragonfly. Lorelai had stubbornly agreed to stay there instead of going back to the house after the bachelorette party. She had received a text from Kirk that the entire façade had been placed and they had the heaters in place and were waiting on the flowers and vines. According to Lane, the square had been transformed into a magical wonderland overnight. The LDB crew had descended and worked all night under Kirk's direction to create an Alice in Wonderland meets the Romanovs. Lorelai is still sleeping, and Rory walks over and climbs into bed with her.
"Hey, Mom."
"Hey, Kid."
Rory starts singing, "Come along with me to my little corner of the world. Dream a little dream in my little corner of the world. You'll soon forget that there's any other place. My little Stars Hollow, Corner of the world."
Lorelai laughs at the change in the lyrics, "I don't think you got the last line right."
"You are worried about lyrics. How about my out-of-tune, tone-deaf?"
"It was perfect, you are perfect." Lorelai looks at her daughter.
Rory smiles softly, "I'm not perfect, but we are pretty perfect together," and she launches into singing, "Peanut – peanut butter and Jelly, and jelly. We are like Peanut – peanut butter and jelly and jelly"
Lorelai grabs a pillow and puts it over Rory's face. "Ok, I get the point; you are happy for me."
Rory pulls the pillow back and sticks her tongue out at her Mom then breaks into a huge grin. "Yes, I am. You and Luke are great together. I am excited for you."
"Thanks for letting me get married first."
'Hey, you were already married first, remember Dad?"
"I don't count that one."
"Why not? Ok. You know what, never mind. Oh, I have a modified song for Luke, too."
"Oh, you do?"
Rory started in, "Take good care of my Mommy
Please don't ever make her blue
Just tell her that you love her
Make sure you're thinking of her
In everything you say and do
Take good care of my Mommy"
"Ok, there, Bobbi, I don't need any more serenading from you."
The two giggle, and Rory snuggles, "I really am happy for you, Mom."
"Thanks, kid."
"Hey, Grandpa, Grandma." Rory hugs her grandparents. "She is upstairs getting dressed. The carriage will be pulling around soon to take her to the town square."
Emily stands back and looks at Rory, "Oh, Rory, honey, you look beautiful. Can we go upstairs to your Mom? I have something for her. I am also very impressed with the town center. Not sure how we will stay warm, but it is beautiful."
"Grandma, you will be plenty warm. Promise. The ceremony won't be that long and the reception is here." Rory waves her hand toward the inner rooms of the Inn.
Emily nodded in approval, "it is lovely. Perfect for Lorelai."
"Thanks, Grandma. This way." Rory smiles at the compliment. She knows it is not what Emily would have done, but the rooms are decorated with white fairy lights entwined with Ivy, flowers, and evergreen branches. Everything is designed for an easy flow of town folks who will be joining them. Food stations are ready to be filled with a Sookie-approved menu, which she was also able to taste test without having to lift a finger. While Rory knew she needed to start working on setting up the foundation soon, she was enjoying the ability to ensure that everything went off without a hitch for her Mom's wedding.
Richard called to Rory as she started up the stairs, "I'll wait here for her. We are both riding in the carriage, right?"
"Yes, you are." Turning to Emily, "We have one too, Grandma. You can ride with Grandpa back to the reception."
"That is lovely, dear. Thank you."
Knocking on the door before opening it, Rory announces her presence along with a "Grandma is here too."
Sookie calls out, "Come in. We are just doing the final buttons."
Rory opens the door to see Lorelai standing in a tailored plunging V-neckline with embroidery over the bodice and sheer long sleeves. The bodice was fitted over an A-line skirt descending to train. "Oh, my. Lorelai, It is beautiful." Emily cooed. "turn around, please."
Lorelai turned, showing the open back and the embroidery going down the back as an overlay.
"Mom, I thought you were wearing the other dress." Rory's face beamed. "This one is."
Lorelai interrupted, "Better for a winter wedding. Long sleeves. Plus, I wasn't as in love with the sash. I even have a cape to wear over it. You know, for getting back and forth to the gazebo." She points to the Ivory floor-length cape coat lying on the bed.
Emily jumps in, "Lorelai, I know you don't want a tiara, so I brought you a hair comb. It will be under the veil for the ceremony." Emily pulled out the hair comb. It was more than Lorelai actually wanted, but she realized her mother had tried.
Lorelai accepted the hair comb and smiled, then pulled Rory into the bathroom. "What have you done with my mother?"
"What are you talking about?"
"That woman out there. She looks like my mother, hair – check, Chanel suit – check, thoughtful hair comb – um, not check. So, I repeat. What did you do with my mother?"
"I talked her out of the tiara and the huge diamond pendant necklace."
"How? When?"
"After Thanksgiving."
"Ok, now that answers when. But you are a reporter, so I am pretty certain you know the how question. Spill."
"Mom. She wanted to be a part."
"I had her let Miss Celine bring the wedding gowns. That is being a part."
"Wait. What do you mean you had Miss Celine bring the wedding gowns? How did she not know what you were going to wear?" Rory scrunched up her face. "What is going on?"
"I didn't make my final choice until later, and I wouldn't tell her what I chose," Lorelai confessed. "It wasn't any big deal."
"Mom, that is a very big deal. Why didn't you tell her?"
"OK, now wait a minute. I see what you are doing."
"What am I doing?" Rory teased.
"Avoiding my question."
"Which is?"
"Ugh, how did you get her to switch to the comb?"
"I was hoping you would have a monkey, monkey, underpants moment. Fine. I told her if she selected something understated, you would."
Lorelai looked horrified, "No, I will not."
"Will not what?"
"There will be no more dinners. I am not doing Saturday night dinner, too, for a hair comb."
"What?"
"You promised her something. Extra dinners. Lunch. Coffee, oh, no, not tea. You wouldn't promise tea." Her eyes were wide with horror.
"Mom, there are no extra anythings. I just told her you would appreciate it. It would be more like a friend moment than a mother-daughter thing."
"Oh, my god. You gave her hope for us?" Lorelai's face was horrified, and she was pointing between the two of them.
Rory also looked horrified at first, then relaxed, and then tensed up, "No! Well? No. There is no you two becoming us. Just a glimpse." She finished with a small smirk.
"You are turning into him." Lorelai was once again aghast.
"Him? Him who?"
"Logan."
"I am not turning into Logan." Rory rebutted.
"You smirked. That is all, Logan."
Rory rolled her eyes. "Well, good thing I plan to marry him then."
"Ugh!" Lorelai huffed, then handed the comb to Rory. "Can you put it in my hair, please?"
"Sure." Rory pushed at her mother's hair and put the comb in. "It looks beautiful."
Emily can be heard knocking on the door, "Are you two finished in there? You do know we could hear you."
Rory opened the door and gave her grandmother a wane smile, "Please pretend you didn't."
Emily nodded and smiled as Lorelai emerged with the comb in her hair. "It looks nice."
Rory and Sookie changed into the dark blue dresses. Rory had a boat-neck lace bodice with a floor-length A-Line skirt. Sookie was in a floor-length princess, flowy with a simple scoop illusion bodice. Both looked lovely. Lorelai handed each of them a floor-length dark blue cape coat to wear for the ride.
Sookie placed the veil on Lorelai's head. "Ready?"
"For a long time." She smiled at her friend. "Thanks for being with me through all of this."
"You guys can babysit." Sookie grinned.
"Happily." The 4 women walked out of the room and down the stairs. "Hi, Dad." Richard was standing at the bottom with his hand extended.
"You look beautiful." He smiled, love and pride beaming from his eyes. "Not sure I am ready to give you away."
"Thanks, Dad."
The carriages roll through town. Rory is chatting with her Grandmother and Sookie when Sookie exclaims, "Oh, my. Oh, my gosh. Rory. Who did this?"
Rory turns in her seat and sees the walls with the door. A small table is there with a bottle labeled "drink me". The walls are draped in lights and garlands. Every tree in the town square is full of lights, more than had been put up for Christmas. Rory didn't know what Kirk had planned, she just knew that Logan made sure he could execute it. Rory smiled, "Kirk did this."
Rory looks to see her Mom's carriage coming around the corner. She sees Logan lift his arm; he has cameras set up to record the experience. She gives him a big grin. Then she hears her mother.
"Oh, my. Wow. Dad? Did you? I asked Kirk to decorate, but how? Dad?"
"Definitely not my doing, Lorelai." Richard sees Logan duck and knows immediately that Rory and Logan were part of this. He recognizes LDB when he sees it. He makes a mental note to talk with Logan at the reception.
Logan and TJ are there to help the ladies out of the carriage. Logan walks Emily to her seat. Rory sees that there are four bottles on the table. Each has a person's name on it above the "Drink Me!"
TJ hands Sookie the first bottle. When she drinks it, the door opens and closes. She is greeted with gossamer curtains, they part, and she can see the flowers and lights, chairs and couches with all of the townspeople. The space is warm, and someone reaches over to take off her cape. Rory is then handed her bottle, and again, the door opens, closing behind her as the gossamer parts for her walk down the aisle. It is a magical space. She turns to see it is Kirk who is taking the capes. She smiles at him, saying, "Thank you." He gives her a thumbs-up and smiles.
Next, TJ hands the two bottles to Lorelai and Richard. They toast and drink. The song, Reflecting Light, by Sam Philips starts to play, and the door and wall roll back for them to enter. Lorelai links her arm with Richards, and the gossamer pulls apart, revealing the stunning space. "Oh, my." Lorelai's eyes are shining. She sees Luke standing in the light and flower-draped gazebo with Jess next to him. Kirk taps her on the shoulder and takes the cape.
"I'll give it back." He reassures her.
"It's perfect!" she beams.
The chuppah is at the bottom of the steps of the gazebo; everything is covered in lights, flowers, garlands, and ivy. There are small tables against the walls. The bride's side has junk food, while the groom's side is all crudités. The space is warm, but she can't see the heaters. It is beyond anything she imagined.
Richard hands off Lorelai to Luke. He looks at him, "We need to discuss your franchise - take care of my daughter." Luke looks at him and smiles.
"Don't worry. I have Burt."
Lorelai laughs and takes Luke's hand. "I'm in good hands, Daddy." She lightly kisses Richard's cheek before he goes to sit next to Emily.
Reverand Skinner looks at his friends and starts, "Friends and loved ones, we are gathered here today to witness the union of Lucas Luke Danes and Lorelai Victoria Gilmore in marriage. Luke and Lorelai have chosen to write their own vows."
Luke looks at Lorelai, "Lorelai, from the moment you walked into my diner with your coffee order, I knew I was in trouble. You are... everything I didn't know I needed. You're smart and funny, and you make me a better man. I promise to always keep your coffee cup full, to never get between you and your junk food, and to love you with everything I have for all our days.
Lorelai smiled, "Luke, when we first met, I never imagined we'd end up here, but I'm so glad we did. You're the guy who's always been there through all the crazy. You're my partner, my best friend, my handyman, and the person I want by my side. I promise never to take your flannel shirts for granted, to keep finding new ways to surprise you, and to love you fiercely, forever, and always.
Reverand Skinner looked at them, "Luke, place the ring on her finger and repeat after me. I, Luke, take you, Lorelai."
Jess handed Luke the ring, and he placed it on her finger, saying, "I, Luke, take your Lorelai To be my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, in sickness and in health, until death do us part."
Reverand Skinner grinned, "I see you have been practicing, Lorelai. Do you need help, or do you have this too?"
Lorelai accepted the ring from Sookie and slid it onto Luke's finger, "I, Lorelai, take you, Luke, to be my husband, promising from this day forward to have and to hold you. Love you in sickness and health until death do us part."
Getting a smile from Reverand Skinner, "Close enough. Luke and Lorelai have exchanged vows and rings as symbols of their commitment to each other. By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.
Luke and Lorelai share a passionate kiss amidst cheers and applause from their friends and family.
Luke whispered, "We did it."
Lorelai grinning, "We sure did, Danes."
A couple of hours later at the reception, Rory is talking with Lane and Zach. They have been talking about the upcoming move to the new house and when they will be taking over the music store. Everyone has eaten, and some of the guests have started to trickle out. Rory feels a tap on her shoulder, "Ace?" She turns as she feels Logan's arms wrap around her. "Um, Zack, Lane, do you mind if I steal my fiancée for a dance?"
Lane smiles at her friend. "I think I deserve a dance too. Zack?" She puts out her hand for Zack to take it.
Rory turns in Logan's arms, and as Zack and Lane walk past them to find their spot, she hears Lane make the sounds of an adding machine. Logan pulls back and looks at Rory, "What is that about?"
"Oh, she knows I paid." Rory doesn't want to tell Logan he is her accountant, but he is. And an adding machine makes sense when you have money too.
"Ok." Logan pulls her back in. "It is good to have you in my arms again. Been too long."
"We were together yesterday." She chided.
"Like I said, much too long,"
"Someday, you will be tired of me." she teased, giving him a smirk.
"Well, then we will have found the fountain of youth and be turning 1000 because I can't imagine a day when I won't want you in my arms." The two continue dancing when Moon River comes on.
"They are playing our song," Rory comments.
"It is when I realized what I had been missing out on by not kissing guys." They both laugh at the distant memory of their first dance.
"Logan, I've been thinking."
"Am I in trouble?"
Rory leans in and takes a deep breath and then leans back out again. "Definitely not in trouble. First I just want to say thank you for the time with my Mom. I needed this. It reminded me of all the good times. I still need to figure out how to tell her about the money and everything. This week was good. Really good. It felt more like what I am used to with her."
"I'm glad. I like your relationship with your Mom. Your freakishly close relationship." Logan teased. He felt her tense up a bit and started to worry, "Mhmm."
"What if?" Rory hesitates, and Logan backs up; she pulls him in. "I am not suggesting we move to Stars Hollow. We already had that conversation." She feels his shoulders relax. "I was thinking about going back to school and getting an MBA in management after the election is over."
"Sure, Ace. But why?"
"I am really enjoying being on the road and being a reporter. But I can compare that to being an editor. I liked being an editor more. I thought I could do a part-time MBA and keep writing stories; Oprah offered to let me help her with her next book. I want to be with you. I want to live in our house full-time. Together." She put her head on his shoulder.
"I'd like that."
"Good. I hear Stanford is a good school," she whispered.
He kissed her on the head, and both smiled.
