The roll out of the SAM vaccine was done very quietly to keep people from rioting. This was easy to accomplish without newspapers, television, smart phones and the like. Some people wondered what SAM stood for, not knowing their lives had been saved by a young hunter named Sam.
The SAM vaccine stood for Save All Mankind.
The virus was eradicated in the United States 6 years after Sam Winchester gave his precious blood. It was a total of almost twenty years since the world went to hell in a handbasket. So far there was a mere 5 years of rebuilding after the first roll out of the SAM vaccine.
After all those years of humans living rough and a couple generations of kids having never known what life was like before, it was going to be a long road ahead to repair and heal.
The very first thing was getting electricity on with now old and outdated equipment. It was essential to moving forward. It was spotty and nowhere near pre-virus function but at least it was something. Clean water was essential and people lined up to eternity to get their share at the base camps set up around the country. After electricity and clean water was food and fuel production.
With the end of the Supernatural Sickness the skies above stopped dropping wayward creatures onto to the earth. Sam, Dean, and every hunter out there was relieved. They never figured out the correlation between the other dimension sky beasts and the sickness but they really did not care. It was over and the world had enough creatures of its own to contend with.

Christmas Five Years Later…
Bobby lifted his daughter high so she could place a star on top the Christmas tree. The little girl hugged him tight after completing her task. Her root beer color eyes sparkled with excitement.
"Papa, this year we will have pretty lights, right?"
"I hope so sweet pea. Ya know, even if they don't work, we'll have a great Christmas anyway."
Mia tickled his white beard with her little fingers and giggled, "You can be Santa Claus!"
He set his little girl on her feet and ruffed up her dark hair, "I feel about as old as Santa Claus."
Sam and Dean were in a lip lock under the mistletoe, pawing each other like teenagers. Cayden did a walk by spritzing with the water bottle he used to keep the cats off the counter.
"Naughty! There are children watching."
Dean swiped the spray bottle from the other omega and spritzed his daughter and her beau making out on the couch, "You heard him, naughty! Get your paws off her, Liam."
Alfie brought in a tray of deviled eggs and the family practically knocked him over to get one, it was not their proudest moment. Duke went around and tried to steal as many as he could and Mia, his partner in crime, was always good for sneaking him a treat.
There was a bit of tension between Danny and Nick since the 19 and 20 year olds had moved on from each other but remained friendly. Nick wasn't ready to take a leap and Danny got tired of waiting. The alpha was now seeing someone from their former high school.
Sam was picked to do the honors this year. He held up the plugs, "I've got a good feeling. Everyone ready?"
Mia hopped up and down chanting "lights, lights, lights!"
There they were in all their colorful glory, sparkling, twinkling, and captivating everyone. This small gift was really a big one, it was a step toward civilization and a bit of normal.
…
Down the Road….
Sam and Dean got a kick of their now twenty five year old twins hopping around like excited kids.
"Get ready, Alfie should be calling from the school any minute now."
As if on cue, the wall phone in Bobby's kitchen rang and Emma snatched the receiver and stumbled over her words.
"Hello? Hello this is Emma on a telephone. I'm using a telephone!"
Nick took it from her and listened to the voice in the other end. His sister hissed, "Say something."
"Uh, hello this is Nick Winchester."
The rest of the conversation was one sided as an amazed Nick just smiled and nodded while Alfie spoke to him on this miraculous device. The thing he'd been dreaming of using ever since he could remember.
Emma's year old twins, watched their mother with curiosity as her face went through a range of emotions. Robert and Casy would grow up with electricity and telephones.
The twin babies weren't much of a surprise for Sam and Dean. Liam and Emma had been attached at the hip since their teen years. They went through the sickness era together and the trust and attraction they had for each other kept them that way. Sam and Dean were ecstatic to have grandkids of their own and the babies were exceptionally robust.
….
Farther Down the Road….
Bobby did not die the way he thought he would, in a blaze of glory, fighting the good fight against a monster or supernatural entity. He died of a bad ticker and at the age of seventy two. He was surrounded by all his loved ones, Sam, Dean, Cayden, Danny, Emma, Nick, Mia and Duke. He died as a father five times over, having raised Sam and Dean, Alfie, Danny and Mia. He never thought he'd have children but he was gifted with many.
He was a great-grandpa to Emma's own wonder twins who he wouldn't see grow up but at least the tots got to know him.
Bobby's biggest regret was leaving his loyal wife behind, the omega who taught him how to love again and gave him everything. He wondered what he had done to deserve such an incredible mate.
After Bobby's death, he was given a hunters funeral and Cayden took what ashes he thought were Bobby's and kept them in an antique oriental urn his husband had been fond of. Cay surprised everyone by traveling back to the omega compound for an undetermined amount of time. Mia went with her mom to see where her birth mother and father lived and died and in hopes of meeting some of her relatives there.
…..
Nick Winchester had grown into a beautiful young man with his mother's gorgeous facial features and his father's foxtail eyes. He stood almost eye to eye with Dean and had Sam's lean build.
Up until his grandfather's death, he had lived his life without knowing the love of a man until reconnecting with Danny Singer at Bobby's funeral. In their mutual grief, the two picked up where they had left off when they were younger. In their time apart, Danny had been with men and women to fill up the void that Nick left but none of them could compare to his strange and wonderful teen crush. His physical needs were met but he never forged a true bond with any of them.
His own mother and father found each other while grieving over the death of Cayden's brother and now Danny and Nick found each other all over again over the death of Bobby.
Danny was the first and he would be the last for Nick.
….
After Bobby's death, Sam and Dean holed up in the cabin together. His death affected everyone in different ways and for the brothers, they had lost their father, role model and savior. It was Bobby who was always there when their own father wasn't. He was gruff but fair, loving in his own way and listened to both of them when things got bad. When his boys did not have the words to explain how they were feeling, Bobby was there with a reassuring pat on the back and plenty of comfort food.
For Dean especially, the food went beyond nourishment and became a balm for his wounds. Every bowl of chili or stew, all those pieces of pie and slices of quick bread was home to him. There would be no more of that and now all he could do was recreate those same recipes for their own kids and grandkids.
Sam would miss how Bobby never made him feel bad for being a brainiac, as Dean called him on occasion. The father figure instilled a love of books, research and knowing you never ever stopped learning. When Sam expressed his desire to go to college, it was Bobby who encouraged him every step of the way and unlike John, he was proud of Sam.
He loved them both unconditionally.
…
After all those years of taking photos, Sam was finally able to get the film developed. He marched into a Walgreens and dumped a garbage bag full of rolls on the counter. The young woman at the photo center couldn't believe the amount of film. She handed the distinguished gentleman a huge stack of envelopes and pointed to a table.
"You can fill them out over there. So, you take a lot of pictures I see."
"This is only half of them."
…..
The Twins and their sets of twins resided in the Singer home and raised them all as siblings. Nick and Emma were destined to each have a boy and girl and neither of them had anymore. Each of them had a bedroom with their respective husbands, the girls shared a room and the boys had their own.
Just as before, it was the family gathering place for events and get togethers.
When Sam and Dean showed up one day carrying two huge boxes of photos, the kids and grandkids acted like it was Christmas. Almost every important moment captured and chronicled. Everyone laughed and cried, there was much reflection and a lot of explaining things to the grandchildren. It was a beautiful week of togetherness and creating albums for the family.
All Sam and Dean had from their own tragic childhood were a few precious photos saved from the fire. Sam made sure this was not the case for his family. There were even photos from Sam and Dean's wedding, the omega compound, Dean and his mentor, Jamie, and other people they'd met over the years.
The grandkids wrote in their journals as their grandparents told them the stories. Alice, Michael, Robert, and Casey conferred and decided a tape recorder was also needed. They wrote incredibly fast, having taught themselves a type of shorthand only the four of them could read. They truly found Sam and Dean's lives fascinating as well as that of their parents.
….
Almost to the end of the road…
In Sam and Dean's later years the brothers had almost retired from hunting though they still showed the ropes not only to their grandkids but other up and coming young hunters. There were special summer courses at the high school now for those who made the cut. Sam taught them the basics of warding, fighting spells with spells, the origins of all the known monsters out there, how to handle different sorts of ghosts and dispel them and how to be a proper hunter. Somedays Nick would join his father when he was able.
Dean did the weapons training, how to recognize weak spots in every monster, how to clock dangerous people, combat skills, how to get rid of ghosts and anything else he thought the teenagers and young adults needed.
His classes were especially popular and the seats were full when Emma came to teach. Dean felt it was because she wore tight tank tops and when she did the hand to hand combat her gravity defying rack bounced. Even the female trainees couldn't take their eyes off her.
When Dean pointed this out, his daughters answer was, "Hey, whatever filled the seats and keeps their attention."
…
Dean died just shy of seventy-seven, in their cabin, in his own bed and in his brother's arms. He just fell asleep and never woke up. He lived longer than he ever thought he would.
When Dean ended up in Heaven of all places, Bobby was there to welcome him with a cold beer. He had questions, plenty of them and Bobby answered what he could. Baby was there waiting for him and Bobby suggested a drive. They ended up on a bridge surrounded by Heaven's bounty. Green forests, clear water, and clean air.
"I miss Sam, I miss my family. Is Sam gonna be ok without me?"
Bobby answered gruffly, "What am I, chopped liver? Sam will be ok."
The hunter looked over the side of the bridge, "See there?"
Dean let out a gasp when he saw the clear image of His body on a funeral pyre and Sam surrounded by the whole family. The images sped up and showed the four grandkids gathering bone fragments left in the ashes. They put them in little leather pouches they then put around their necks.
Bobby's brows went up when he saw that, "Kinda morbid."
"Nah, not really. They are great kids, Bobby. We made sure to tell them all about you."
The images faded.
Time works differently here, son. Why don't you go for a drive and before you know it, Sam will be here."
…..
Sam took care of Baby like his own and he didn't allow anyone else to drive her. Sometimes he'd just sit inside the cabin, the windows rolled up, eyes closed and remember. Often Sam fell asleep, waking up with a jolt as if he'd been touched and the car would smell distinctly of Dean's special scent that only Sam could recognize and decipher.
Though he had his family and they loved him dearly, spending year after year alone in a big old bed without your mate beside you was something Sam Winchester would never get used to. He lived a good rest of his life in honor of Dean and died seventeen years later surrounded by his family.
Dean was there on that bridge to greet him, the brothers reunited forever.
….
Atlanta….
Emma adjusted her bra beneath the fancy suit she had on. The woman hated formal clothes and would have been just as happy in jeans and a tee but her brother insisted, she dress up.
"Look Em, I've got a suit on too. Stop complaining."
"Yeah, but yours has pants."
"There is plenty of press here for all over the world. Looking nice at Dad's dedication ceremony won't kill you."
He brushed a silver lock of hair from her eyes and smiled at his beautiful sister, "You look gorgeous."
She held up the book they wrote together about their parents lives and sacrifices and their own lives during those years the world was struck with sickness. The title, "The Road to Us".
"Did we bring enough copies?"
"Plenty."
Nick grasped her hand and squeezed, "Ready?"
"Ready."
With their free hands, the twins grasped the rope of the cloth covering the huge statue. Nick did the dedication.
"If you already didn't know, I am Nick Winchester and this is my sister Emma. We are here today to dedicate this statue to our father Sam, the man who saved the world."
They both pulled and the heavy canvas slide off revealing an image of Sam in his prime, flannel shirt, jeans, and all and at the base of the statue was a plaque.
"Sam Winchester. He gave his blood to save all mankind."
The End
A/N- Thank you so much for reading everyone. This story is dedicated to my dear writer friend LeeMarieJack. She was an incredibly talented writer who gave me support and encouragement in my writing endeavors. I miss you, Lee.
A/N-This summer I'll be working on a big SPN story taking place in the 60s and into the 70's in Las Vegas and a casino owned by a particularly arrogant and naughty SPN character. It will have a full cast of SPN characters and have pairings like Sam/Dean, Cas/Meg, Benny/Garth, and others.
There will be a historical/ cultural tidbit at the end of each chapter. Expect a little murder and mystery, Vietnam war references pertaining to Dean, maybe a baby or two, sex both explicate and tame, romance, angst, bad guys and good guys, gangsters, dirty dealings, violence, gamblers, a pit boss (Bobby?), alphas (Dean) omegas (Sam) and everything else I can throw at this.
I am aiming at a fall release.
Hope to see you there.
