January 31 – Day 50
Toshinori watched Melissa excitedly run up the basement stairs, carrying her VECTRE phone with her. Within a moment, she's completely out of the scene, leaving just him and David alone.
"Are you really certain on what you just said?" Toshinori turned to the professor, who's now just standing beside the Bio-Capsule. "Isn't what we're doing here just supposed to be secret? Doesn't that mean we should just keep to a minimum the amount of people knowing about Kizuki's existence in this residence?"
"Yes, I'm very much aware of that fact." David casually nodded in response.
"And yet you're fine with bringing Midoriya here?" Toshinori scratched the back of his head, gesturing towards the Bio-Capsule afterwards. "Care to explain? Is this about Melissa or something?"
David opened his mouth, but before a single word could come out, he stopped himself, and instead raised up a hand in a pointing gesture. "It's a bit complicated, but here me out. First, allow me to explain how Kizuki's Quirk works."
Toshinori raised one eyebrow, but eventually just nodded, his expression quickly changing from mild annoyance to curiosity. For the longest time he knew of David; if ever he answered in such a strange way that doesn't even seem to be related to the current issue at hand, that can only mean that he just managed to come up with something clever that's very much guaranteed to solve multiple issues at once. "Alright, let me hear it," Toshinori said, before taking a step back and crossing his arms, not because of displeasure, but simply because he's ready to hear what the professor came up with.
"While you're out there doing hero work earlier, and while I was waiting for the full analysis of Kizuki's capability to ingest and absorb conventional coma food formulas, I decided to have a quick look at her Quirk for a while. After all, not only we have confirmed the existence of two Blastcore organs inside her, but we also have to be prepared for that once she wakes up, right?"
"Oh… I kind of didn't think of that one…" Toshinori blanked out, only now realizing that major error on his part. "I should really tone down the old just-punch-harder mentality for a bit and start thinking further into things…"
"Agreed, you should do that. But if you can't, then I'm more than willing to handle that part of the issue. It's what teamwork means after all, yes? You excel at one thing and cover the weaknesses of some people, and in turn, those people cover your own weaknesses." David raised a hand. "Anyways, my main point here is that I did some figuring out on how Kizuki's Quirk works; more or less the important parts."
"Alright, do tell."
"So the default description of her Quirk, as it is written on her Quirk registry, is that she can touch and explode things, right? Well actually I have discovered that she has two 'methods' of doing that. Quite surprising, really. Think of it like having two similar programs installed in a single computer." David placed a left hand onto the glass dome of the Bio-Capsule, but somehow not triggering display panels to appear. "Here goes, the first one is that she can plant low-power explosives on particular spots, kind of like placing a conventional hidden landmine that can stick anywhere, in which she can just detonate later. The detonation can either be done singly, or one after the other in rapid succession, or all going off at the same time in one big bang; this is very much the same ability as what original War Machines have, just with the 'Landmine mechanic' instead of just being able to project the explosions as is."
"Wait wait wait… what? She can do all that? So President Kazaguruma really isn't lying…" Toshinori's eyes widened, his mind getting cluttered with numerous thoughts for a moment, before calming down again. "But technically speaking, aren't female Quirks weaker by default? Wouldn't that mean we shouldn't worry too much about her destructive abilities?"
David shook his head. "Yes that may be true, her individual explosives are a tad bit weaker, but… have you forgotten how the original War Machines die?"
"All I know, as what Nana Shimura told me, is that once they were released into the field, they begin rapid firing so much that their Pre-installed Quirks literally soon outright evolve after a while. Once those evolutions go past a certain threshold, their physical bodies couldn't contain it any longer and they overload and eventually just melt into goo-" Toshinori abruptly stopped, eyes slowly widening as he realized something. 'Quirk overloading… Quirk… Overloading…' He slowly turned his head to face Kizuki's still-unconscious form, his eyes turning even wider. "Wait a minute… Quirks that manifested on women are always 'hard-capped', making them naturally completely immune to Quirk Overload and other forms of artificial amplification… So does that mean…?" He then turned back to David, awaiting confirmation on his revelation.
David nodded. "Precisely. Kizuki's Quirk would never evolve to lethal levels, bypassing the debilitating weaknesses her 'brothers' all have. A loophole, if lack of a better term. Theoretically speaking, she has the capacity to output far more firepower than any of the originals could ever hope to achieve, and never die from it. We're talking catastrophic levels of firepower. She can tear apart entire mountains if ever she so desired."
"Y-you must be joking! I-I mean, Landmine in the Quirk registry is literally listed as weak! She can't be that powerful!"
"If she's just weak, and therefore just normal, do you really think President Kazaguruma would send out all those entire battalions of heroes just to get her back? No, no he won't." David shook his head. "It seems that the HPSC guys knew of this little fact."
Toshinori's expression slowly turned from shock into worry. "You mean we have a literal nuclear bomb beside us right now? B-but that still just doesn't make any sense! If she's supposed to be that powerful, then why haven't the MLA used her in that regard? She would have obliterated us all by herself! She could have planted invisible explosives everywhere and took down the entire country alone! Isn't that what the MLA wanted?" He then turned back and checked the basement stairs to make sure no one is listening, and indeed there's none. "I don't understand anything here…"
"Whatever the answer for that MLA-related question, I don't know. But let's not talk about that anymore, let's get back on track." David gestured towards the Bio-Capsule once more. "According to what I further gathered from her Method-1 of planting explosives, it seems to be barely developed. In other terms, it's barely used. Well actually in my entire Quirk analysis of Kizuki, her entire Quirk seemed to have reverted back to the state when she's still younger; meaning they're a lot weaker than they should be, and still lack the continuous detonation ability. So yeah… you could say that we're mostly still safe from being blown off the face of the planet."
Toshinori took a few seconds to respond. "Wait, you mean all that you said is only the first 'Landmine Method'? You mean there's more? And what does Midoriya had to do with all that?"
"That first explanation is just mainly for context, as well as a general idea of what we're going to be up against soon. As for Midoriya's part, it's more related to the second one." David picked up his Holo-Watch just lying on a nearby table. "Kizuki's Quirk is also able to imbue explosive properties onto objects. Basically the whole thing turns into a bomb instead of just placing a 'mine' on it. It's explosive strength, on the other hand, is entirely dependent on the size of the primed object; the bigger the object, the bigger the blast." He held up the device to further emphasize. "As for the genetic code of this secondary Landmine ability, it's noticeably much more improved, meaning that it's used more, far more in fact, than the first one; although still noticeably underused compared to the rate at which Quirks would have naturally improved at this time in regards to age, even considering her now-younger state."
"I see, dangerous Quirks like hers are likely not used that much, and therefore don't improve at the standard rate. Plus there's also the Quirk laws to take into account."
"Right you are." David nodded. "But anyways, my main point here is that Landmine Method 2 is comparatively used at least 5 times more than Method 1, which means Miss Kizuki has a preference in using it. This is where Izuku Midoriya comes in, specifically one half of his Conjoined Quirks – Attraction."
"The Attraction Quirk Young Midoriya has?" Toshinori raised a curious eyebrow. "In what way?"
"Landmine Method 2, or so what I would like to call it to make things easier, is a Blanket Quirk. Midoriya's Attraction Quirk, on the other hand, as what I've seen in my observations, is also a Blanket Quirk. Put two and two together and we just got ourselves a 'Bomb Defuser'."
"Attraction is a Blanket Quirk, eh? Well that's something interesting to know." Toshinori nodded, fully knowing the mechanics of 'Blanket Quirks' - or so the general term used to describe Quirks that affect the entirety of an object rather than a single point of it, and their innate attributes of canceling out and replacing any pre-existing Blanket Quirks placed on it upon application. It's not so much as common knowledge, unlike Backforce – which is taught as early as possible, but quite well-known nonetheless. "Does Young Midoriya know Attraction is a Blanket Quirk?"
"All he knows of it is that it's a Motion-Based Quirk. But then again it's not really that much of an important aspect to know, not for him at least. But for us though, it's quite the convenience!"
"I have another question. Why Young Midoriya? If all we needed is just a Blanket Quirk, then we could've just picked anyone. In Class 1-A alone I have an anti-gravity student who has one. In Class 1-B there's two more, I think. The best part here is that they're hero students and not just mere civilians." Toshinori once again did a quick check on the basement stairs, and sure enough, the door there is still closed.
"Yes we could have just picked out anyone, but do you want additional people knowing Kizuki's existence here? If we go by Midoriya, not only he wants to see her anyways, but he also has a Blanket Quirk. And going by his attitude towards her, I guess we won't even need to convince him that much to hang around here to keep Landmine Method 2 in check, just so nothing spontaneously detonates in this I-Island treasure trove of mine.
"But wait… isn't her Blastcore organ still somewhat damaged?"
"Damaged or not, I'm not planning to take chances. I'd rather get the Bomb Defusal team here ASAP." David too, glanced onto the basement stairs. There's still no one there. "Although, if ever she decides to use Landmine Method 1, then I have no counters to that. Let's hope that she'll stay 'friendly' enough to us."
"Hmmm… I guess it's worth the risk. She could potentially help us out with Yamato after all…" Toshinori sighed, before raising up his right hand and gesturing towards the door up the basement stairs. "So about the lies-
"I think I'd rather keep the lies to a minimum at this point. If anything I think it's time for Melissa to know the full story on who Kizuki is. I mean, Midoriya's arriving here any moment now anyways, might as well get her up to date."
"You're going to tell her all including the 'MLA lieutenant' thing? Are you serious?"
"Well of course I'm not just going to drop a bomb right then and there, I'm going to pick out a perfect moment for the reveal. But yeah, I'd rather not keep any more secrets from my daughter. Whatever happened back in I-Island is more than enough as it is." David shook his head and sighed, muttering to himself a little. "You see, I'm still technically mending some bridges here. I hope you understand."
Toshinori shrugged. 'Indeed…" His voice trailed off, happening to glance once more towards the closed basement door. "So anyways, how would Midoriya get here? Is Melissa going to fetch him? It's just around a half-hour ride to here from their new apartment, right? Considering there's no traffic along the way, that is."
"Actually, now that you said that, I don't really know…" David did one last check of the Bio-Capsule, and upon confirming its stable state, hastily put on his Holo-watch (but didn't activate it yet) and made his way up the basement stairs and through the door. Toshinori, on the other hand, just merely followed along. "I guess Melissa's going to-" David stopped, noticing his daughter just standing by the door, amidst the high-tech clutter surrounding her. "What's going on here?"
"Midoriya said he'll just go here himself." Melissa answered, looking back at him and taking one step to the side to give her father a better view of the front door. "He borrowed some of my notes earlier and he said he'll just go to the address written on the front page." She then took a nearby strange futuristic face mask-looking device, with a built-in earpiece, and put it on. "Okay, I got my translator mask ready," she said, waving her right arm and showing her Holo-watch already worn.
"How about you? Toshinori? Would you be just yourself, or All Might?"
"I think I'd just be in this form. Young Midoriya is probably already sick and tired of All Might arguing to him at this point." Toshinori stepped on ahead. "So what will it be with this clutter? Are we really just going to let him see this mess?"
"Relax, he's just a student, not really someone we need to impress-"
"Oh he's here! That's quick!" Melissa quickly peeked through the window blinds. Afterwards, she then pressed something on her Holo-Watch, causing her to be completely surrounded by, what seems to be, digital particles of various colors for a brief second, before turning into a more Japanese-looking young woman with long brown hair. She still has her glasses on, and the translator-mask, and still wearing the exact same clothes as earlier, although the Holo-Watch is now visibly gone from her arm. "He should be by this door in a minute."
"Showtime… you ready?" It's David, who's now also in his disguise of being a man in his fifties with short graying hair.
Toshinori merely nodded.
Not long after, there soon came a knock on the door. Melissa, who's still standing behind it, immediately turned back to them and did some hand gestures as if asking whether it's time to let the guest in. Upon receiving a nod from her father, in she then reached towards the door knob, and turned it, opening the door.
Outside is Izuku Midoriya, in his usual several layers of thick winter clothing, coupled with a beanie, and a small backpack hanging on his front. All in all his eyes are the only thing that's not covered at all. "Where is she? Is she okay?" he immediately asked in a muffled voice.
"Well uh, she's technically okay-ish." Melissa replied in full English, with the translator automatically translating it to Japanese the moment she's done talking – the translated quotes playing out from the mask's built-in speakers in the same tone as her voice. She then took a step back and gestured for him to come in.
Toshinori, on the other hand, just stayed quiet in the time being. He could tell Young Midoriya is already overwhelmed by the situation, and now even more so upon hearing Melissa's tone in her description of Kizuki's state-*
"M-Mr. Y-yagi!"
Surprised by the suddenness, Toshinori quickly composed himself. Looking ahead, he could see Izuku walking up to him (or waddling, if judging by his awkward gait as he's covered in such heavy clothing), very mindful of the high-tech clutter surrounding the room.
"I-uh… I was just uh-called in here to uh… P-please don't tell All Might I visited Kizuki, please? He wouldn't like it."
"It's okay kid, whatever happened here will not get to him."
"Oh that's great- Ah! Professor Oak! Hi! I didn't see you there! So where's she?" Izuku quickly asked, looking startled by David's presence even though he's just almost right beside him this whole time. Toshinori, on the other hand, could only raise an eyebrow in curiosity at what Izuku said. 'Oak? Professor Oak?' he asked himself for quite a bit, all until eventually remembering that it's the alias David goes as his disguise. 'Damn, this age's really catching up to me…' he added, only now remembering that Melissa, on the other hand, goes by the alias of Daisy. 'But hey at least I can still punch villains? So there's a trade-off I guess?'
"Daisy," David calld out to his daughter and gestured towards Izuku. "Take her to Kizuki."
Melissa nodded in response and hurriedly escorted Izuku out of the scene and down into the basement as he's been requesting. They bumped into a couple of cluttered gadgets along the way, but nothing resulted in anything serious. And in a few moments, the basement door is closed and it's just him and Toshinori once again.
"So… are you really sure about turning the kid into a Bomb Defuser?"
"Yes, although it could still turn out to be just a temporary band-aid solution while I work out a better one. How about you? Have you figured out a fool-proof way to trick the HPSC into thinking that you're still doing your job as normal?"
"No, not really yet. Although I got a temporary solution myself. I'm currently just expanding my service area as much as possible, but not straying too much so I can get back here in a few minutes tops, as All Might of course, in case of emergency." Toshinori paused a bit, before continuing. "By the way, if you have any ideas on how to improve my plan, feel free to suggest. You've always been the brains of our team."
"Well as it turns out I do have a suggestion for you. Since Kizuki is pretty much still stable so far, and she's still not going to be waking up any time soon anyways according to my estimates, I recommend just continuing your job as normal. Remove your area restrictions. Just be sure to check back here whenever you have some free time, though."
"I guess that's not bad of an idea at all." Toshinori shrugged, before gesturing towards the hallway that leads to the basement door. "Alright, let's go check on them. I'm sure Young Midoriya would be demanding a lot of explanations by now."
"Indeed. In that case, just let me handle it. I'll try to 'lighten' it up, so to speak. Of course I can't just drop in the whole 'Hawks did it' thing. Okay, let's go."
Toshinori nodded and on he went following David into the basement. As they were descending down the stairs he could already hear Young Midoriya's endless barrage of questions about his supposed 'lost friend', clearly and utterly confused at the state he found her in. At the same time he's also loudly asking something about the 'weird swirly thing' next to the makeshift clinic. Melissa, on the other hand, is seemingly overwhelmed by the relentless questions that all that could be heard from her are either just weak mutterings to straight-out just saying she doesn't know the answer. Both of them were within the hospital-curtained area, with said curtains closed behind them.
"What the?! Where's her right ear?!" came another one of Midoriya's loud confused questions echoing across the basement. "What the hell really happened here?!"
"Dave… I hope you're ready to answer everything…" Toshinori loudly whispered to the professor in front of him as they walked closer to the covered area. "Or else it'll only escalate further from there. I've already told you how it went on my side; not even All Might can stop that kid. He's become really attached to her for some reason. Are you sure he's never in some kind of MLA mind control?"
"How many times do I have to tell you? I have my own mini Dread Mirror device, and I can safely say that this Izuku Midoriya is in no way under the effect of anything. No mind control, no persuasion, no bribery, no nothing."
"Okay then, work your magic, I'll keep watch."
"Don't worry, this won't take long." David replied, his tone full of confidence, as he walked up ahead and swiped open the entrance to the makeshift clinic. Izuku's there, just standing with his back turned to him, staring at Kizuki within the Bio-Capsule, and still continuing to relentlessly throw out entire barrages of questions, all while Melissa is pulling on a few layers of his piled-on sweaters just to stop him from outright planting his palms on the glass and potentially accidentally activating something he might regret later.
"Midoriya Izuku?" The professor called out, making his presence known and startling the person he referred to and instantly made him turn around.
"What happened to her?" Izuku immediately asked, mittened hands almost flailing about. "What's going on?!"
"Alright, calm down… let's start with the basics… what do you want to know?"
Izuku's eyes visibly twitched at the question directed to him. "I don't know… Uh, Everything?" he then glanced back at the Bio-Capsule behind him. "It's like one day when Nezu suddenly just showed up and told me that Miss Kizuki is completely innocent despite some sketchy connections… And then some time later, here then comes All Might suddenly showing up as well and inviting me and my mother to go out to lunch… And then out of nowhere, he came in and started telling us that we should distance ourselves away from Miss Kizuki because apparently she's a big bad villain and is VERY dangerous and whatnot. He even went in as far as relocating us somewhere here in Tokyo and re-enrolling me at Shiketsu, all apparently for our own good! It's way over the top, I tell you, Professor!" Izuku paused a bit, taking in a deep breath and slowly letting it out, alongside a facepalm. "And then I don't know what happened to Miss Kizuki ever since… that is until just a few hours ago. Daisy was telling a story about a horribly beat-up tall blue person All Might apparently found and can't be brought to a hospital. I eventually got really curious about it and started asking questions after class, and then there's the green eyes, the two-chambered heart, and the name and then BAM! Here I am… and I can't understand anything…"
David went silent for a while as he processed all the information that's told to him. "Ah, I see. So you're curious on the entire story then? Okay so here goes…" he then glanced a bit and nodded at Toshinori. "Whatever happened to Kizuki is all dealt by a hero-"
"It's All Might, isn't it?" Izuku butted in, instantly swiveling his head to stare down Toshinori with narrowed eyes. "It's your boss, isn't it? He's the only one treating her like some massive threat and making up stupid stories when in reality she never did anything! I wouldn't be surprised if he's the one who did all this…"
"Young Midoriya, I can assure you the hero who brought Kizuki to that state is not All Might, it's someone else. He just found her already in that state and brought her here, that's all." Toshinori is quick to correct him. In the past few moments he's been fully expecting that his alter ego will be the first Izuku will place the blame on, and he's definitely correct on that part.
"Then who did it then? The general idea seems to be that a hero did this to Kizuki, then who is he? How come everyone knows it's a hero who did it, but not the actual hero who did it? Smells like something's being deliberately hidden here…"
Toshinori blanked out, feeling cornered. Obviously he can't just blurt out that Hawks did it, for it'll just send Midoriya tangled into the HPSC's entire web of lies, and of course that won't do. But now that the young man is just blaming him, now what? He briefly glanced to David, fully expecting his friend to speak up and cover for him like he said earlier. But unexpectedly, what he received from him is just a simple nod, coupled with a discreet head gesture as if he should just carry on whatever excuse he's planning at the moment. 'Okay then? Perhaps you want me to stall for a few seconds? No problem…' Toshinori quickly prepared a response to Izuku. "It's Black Anurian. He's the one who did it."
"Black Anurian huh? That name's not ringing any bells…" Izuku quickly zipped open the backpack he's carrying with him, pulled out his phone, and immediately began fidgeting with it, his mittened hands clearly having a tough time with it and yet he's still persisting. "His name sounds English too…"
'Uh…' What Izuku suddenly did is not what Toshinori is expecting. If anything he's expecting the young man to just get with the lies and push further from there, just to get the heat off of him. But no, Izuku is now searching out the name. "Er, kid? Black Anurian is a fairly unpopular hero, it won't be easy searching for him."
"Yeah, but the February hero popularity polls are now online anyways." Izuku raised his phone, showing the screen to Toshinori. "All of the entire country's heroes are listed here."
'Damn… I forgot about the hero popularity polls…'
"Aha! He's not listed! I knew it, Black Anurian is a lie! It's All Might, isn't it, huh? It's your boss , isn't it?" Izuku stared down Toshinori once again, not even minding how rude he's being. "So all those 'delusional' internet dwellers are actually speaking the truth, huh? Looks like All Might really does hate heteromorphs and non-normal people after all!"
"What? Don't be silly!" Melissa interjected. "Since when did All Might hate heteromorphs?"
"Oh yeah? Then what about that event just over a decade ago? There's an entire mutant genocide! Thousands died!" Izuku instantly returned to staring down Toshinori. "And where's All Might back then, huh? Where is he? How about that neat little tidbit that apparently all of All Might's missed attacked were always against mutants!"
Toshinori gritted his teeth. Izuku is technically correct on All Might's missed punches being always on mutants. But that's just only because he's just rushing to make the most out of his now extremely-limited OFA; he has no more time to properly assess the situation and therefore he just goes for the obvious aggressor, and that's it, or whoever looks like a villain, which mutants often are. Yes it's a very unreliable and crude system he's following: Just go in, find the villain, and then leave, but it's proportionally much more effective and efficient at OFA-conservation. He's making the most of what he has, plus he always makes sure he triggers Backforce in his punches anyways – it's not like the mutants caught in the crossfire suffer anything more than scratches; and they also get monetary compensation in those accidents…
… Now if only Toshinori could explain all that, but he couldn't, because it requires revealing the current deteriorating state of his Quirk…
And as for the genocides. It's an extremely complicated thing, not to mention partly connected towards OFA as well. It requires a full explanation, as well as observation with unbiased lenses, which Izuku clearly don't have at the moment.
Toshinori felt even more cornered. Out of options, he took a quick discreet glance over at David, hoping that whatever he's planning-*
"Midoriya?" David abruptly spoke out, instantly taking Izuku's attention. "I propose a suggestion. How about instead of blaming All Might, what if you just wait until Miss Kizuki wakes up, and then ask her who did the beating? You'll get your answer straight from the victim herself."
"Why am I getting the strange feeling that something is just going to force her to say anything else other than the real perpetrator…" Izuku's voice trailed off towards the end, his eyes now once more narrowing. "I'm not buying it."
"Oh?" David made an exaggerated thinking gesture, tapping his chin with his fingers. "Then how about this? What if you're physically present at the time Miss Kizuki wakes up? You'll be the first in line, and there'll be no fraud there."
"Huh? Can this weird machine predict when she'll wake up?" Izuku asked, his stance now visibly becoming relaxed.
"You're in luck! The Bio-Capsule actually comes with a built-in prediction feature! Although you have to bear in mind that this machine normally analyzes normal people, and Kizuki over here not only has unique internal mechanisms, but she's also in a strange hibernation-like state , but the prediction's almost always accurate enough." David walked up to stand near the Bio-Capsule, before quickly planting his hands onto the glass dome and doing some swiping gestures to eventually bring out a digital panel with a bunch of English words on them, with some failing to display properly. "Hmm, just like I said, things are a little haywire… but the general prediction is about four days to a week tops, at approximately around 7 to 8 pm in the evening."
"Hmmm… I guess that's reasonable…" Izuku slowly shrugged, but he eventually narrowed his eyes on David again. "But what if she woke up earlier and then something forced her to answer something different?"
"Oh? Well in that case… I guess the only solution is you staying here for the next few days."
Toshinori's ears instantly perked up upon hearing those words, his eyes widening. While it's definitely a relief now that Izuku's attention is away from him, but David suddenly enacting his plan of having Midoriya stay with them as a 'Bomb Defuser' truly caught him off-guard. 'Really? Right here right now?' He discreetly looked at his friend and immediately gestured out his dislike of it, at which David only responded with an equally discreet gesture that seemingly said 'I got this one'.
"Ooh! A sleepover! That would be very cool!" came a sudden comment from Melissa. "That's a great idea!"
All attention instantly went to her.
"What?" Melissa asked them, her expression blank. "I just agreed to the idea, that's all. Plus…" she then turned to Izuku, "we still have that paper crane project, right? I guess we could finish it way earlier?"
"Uh… Well uh-"
David raised a hand, interrupting Izuku's response to his daughter. "If you want, Midoriya, I'm allowing you to spend a few nights here. I'll handle dinner, all expenses paid. Do tell your mother first about it, of course, just don't tell her about Kizuki."
"Yeah… she won't even let me mention her name these days…" Izuku raised his right hand and slowly scratched the back of his head, his beanie almost falling off. "Uh… so is that offer really serious or something? But seriously, why can't anyone here just tell me who's the hero who did all this damage anyway?" Izuku did a quick glance on the Bio-Capsule behind him. "It all just seems… fishy…"
"Midoriya, we really can't just tell you outright because it's classified information. Simple as that. But rest assured it's not All Might, not even close to anything All Might-related-" David suddenly stopped, an idea suddenly popping into his head. "How about another suggestion? How about when Miss Kizuki finally wakes up, not only you'll ask her who did it, but what if we also present to her a picture of All Might? That way, if she gets traumatized upon seeing it, then that confirms it's All Might's fault. Obviously it'll be a much more natural reaction."
"What…? Professor Oak I think that's a little too much…"
"Too much may be the correct word here, yes, but I'm suggesting that merely because I'm sure it's not All Might's doing anyway. She will not get traumatized at all at such a simple picture." David pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "So what will it be? I'm throwing out suggestions here, which do you prefer?"
Izuku opened his mouth, yet none came out, not until a full minute later. "I don't know… Although I'd rather be here to ask the question myself. I guess I'll go with the-"
"The sleepover solution will be very nice, just sayin'!" Melissa interjected, rapidly nodding, as if in excitement. Toshinori, on the other hand, could only be somewhat impressed. How is Melissa even agreeing to whatever her father says? Did he brief her on the plan? Since when? Do they have some Mind-Link equipment or something? If so then how come he never told anything about it? But whatever the reason for that, Toshinori just kept quiet, lest draw Izuku's attention once more. He'd really rather not get reminded anymore of those things.
"…Okay… how about starting tomorrow? I need to get permission to stay here first, of course." Izuku looked around a bit, an unsure expression visible in his eyes. "She won't be waking up any time soon, right? Still four days to a week?"
"Right you are, Midoriya. Oh, that reminds me, come over here, I'd like to show you something." David reached out towards the Bio-Capsule and once more planted his hands onto the glass dome, generating multiple digital panels all over it. He then started swiping said panels around, in which after a minute, eventually converged together into a line graph showing the rough estimate of Kizuki's current state. "This right here is a line graph showing the general summary of Miss Kizuki's health, and as you can see she's clearly already recovering. I have to say, her unique internal physiology really helped a ton-"
"What the?! What the hell is this?!" Izuku aggressively leaned into the line graph, his face just inches away from it, although careful not to touch the glass. "What is this steep downward curve? Is this how bad things went?" he looked around again, seeming like he wants to add something, but it isn't until a few seconds later that he continued, "So the missing teeth, ear, and hair are only the beginning?! What's under her blanket anyways?"
"Uh-" David didn't even get to continue when Izuku spoke up again.
"J-just look at this graph! You mean after being placed here, her state got even lower?!" Izuku leaned back into the line graph. "And also, if this is a summary, then wouldn't the bottom of the graph mean 'dead'? Then why the hell is the lowest point right here literally just one centimeter away from it?!"
"Midoriya, calm down. You got this all wrong." David nervously chuckled, now feeling a bit unsure on whether showing the graph is the right thing. "You see, this whole line graph represents the total summary of Kizuki's state even before we found her in." He then pointed at the part where the line is still relatively high. "That means that this line up here is her normal state, and then this sharp drop is the part where she got brutally beaten… Anyways, my main point here is that the line afterwards the drop is now steadily rising on its own, and all we've been doing yet is just keeping her in a clean capsule."
Izuku groaned in response. "Now I'm really curious to what really happened…" he said, his tone now sounding even more suspicious of everything.
"Indeed, and that's why I'm suggesting you to stay here for a few nights, so you can ask her youself once she wakes up. So what will it be? Better act fast so we can get to arranging things around as soon as possible."
"Alright…" Izuku straightened himself. "Professor Oak? I accept your offer. Maybe starting tomorrow? I guess?"
"Oh that's wonderful!" Melissa added, once more nodding excessively.
"One last request? May I see what's under the blankets?" Izuku gestured towards the Bio-Capsule once more.
"Ah that would be unpreferrable. You see, that thing is a blanket with healing properties. It must be kept on as much as possible on recovering patients." David replied, nodding. "Anything else then?"
"Uh, now I don't know whether this'll help but uh… Kizuki said one time that doctors advise her diet to be always high on garlic to power-up her unique immune system."
"Garlic? Well that's new. Alright, I'll keep that in mind. I'll be expecting you tomorrow then?"
Izuku nodded, before taking one last look at the Bio-Capsule. "I guess I better get going now. See you tomorrow, professor-" he abruptly stopped as he swiped open the hospital curtains on the exit of the makeshift clinic, almost jumping to one side upon being startled by the sudden amplified glow of the anti-tracking device's energy coils. "What's that thing anyway? It's… creepy…"
"It's the air freshener," came a very quick response from David, as he too, moved out of the 'clinic' area. "It's just how I roll with things around here."
"Okay then, I'll be leaving now." Izuku nodded. "I'll be here after class tomorrow… and I'm uh… I apologize for the outburst… earlier…" he added, giving a quick seemingly-embarrassed glance over at Toshinori.
"Nah, don't mention it kid. We all get upset at times. Now, with all things settled…" David turned towards his daughter. "Daisy, would you kindly-"
"I'm on it, Papa!" Melissa cheerfully skipped ahead and gestured for Izuku to follow her up the basement stairs. "Hey if you want I could get you to the bus stop?" She then turned to his father even before the young man could reply. "I'll take him to the bus stop. I'll be back in half an hour, bye!"
And just like that, within a moment's notice, both of them are out of the basement. After another whole minute, the sound of the front foor opening and closing is heard, signifying that the two now finally left the house altogether. Now it's just both David and Toshinori alone once more.
"… Well that's quite an impressive convincing job you did back there… It took a little while to begin though." Toshinori shrugged as he turned to face the professor, who just turned off his Holo-Watch disguise. "Also, how the heck did you coordinate your plan with Melissa? That was flawless! Is it some kind of gadget? Or maybe a father-daughter mental link or something?"
"Er… actually, none of her responses are actually part of anything. Everything she said are all natural." David replied, his brows slightly furrowed, now visibly confused and thinking as to how did his daughter actually went along with the plan, somehow. He didn't even tell anything to her, not a single word, about it. "But hey, let's count our blessings, at least she didn't object to anything. That makes things a whole lot easier." He then glanced on the floor. "We better continue our clean-up now, this place has got to be spotless by tomorrow evening."
"Oh don't worry. I still have time, I could help out." Toshinori looked around on the floor well. "Oh by the way, is the Bio-Capsule's Health Prediction thing actually real? Then why didn't you-"
"It's fake. I just made it up alongside the 'Healing Blanket'." The professor smirked, shaking his head in a rather confident manner. "Well at least it all went well, yes? I got his attention off of you, and with a little steering here and there, it eventually led to the preferred result… and here we are. I have managed to get Midoriya to be our unofficial Bomb Defuser."
"But wait, if the prediction feature's just made-up, so what if Kizuki woke up earlier than expected?
"Ah yes, I may have only made that up, but I'm still basing it on something, and by that I mean I still took into account the rate at which Kizuki is recovering according to the Life Graph. Normally, people wake up at around 70 to 80 percent, and I estimated that she'll reach that point in around 4 days, provided we don't run into some roadblocks along the way, that is. Although the garlic suggestion sounds interesting…"
"Hmm… nice to hear that."
"Indeed. The plan is going swimmingly, everything is going fine, for now at least." David stretched his arms a bit, ending with up pushing his glasses again up the bridge of his nose. "We have our auto-recovering patient; who's now confirmed to be compatible with standard coma patient food formulas, Melissa somehow going along without any instructions at all, Midoriya accepting his part as well, and so far our anti-tracking equipment is fully functional. In fact our only real problem, currently, are the Blastcore organs; Once they're fully-repaired, it'll be up to Miss Kizuki to do what she'd like to do with it…"
"Let's hope she won't do anything irrational with-* Wait a minute…" Toshinori abruptly stopped, remembering something. "Looking back on it, she didn't technically detonate anything back with the Midoriyas, or so what the kid is saying. She didn't detonate anything either at Cybersleuths, nor at UA too. And Stain didn't tell me anything either when he gave her to me. I don't think she detonated a single thing yet, not counting her time with the MLA of course. So far she's been completely harmless."
"Hmm… But either way if she ever decide to use them it's not like we're not prepared for it. Like I said, I have my own Dread Mirror, and now we have our Bomb Defuser for Landmine Method 2. We're going to be fine. And then once things start proceeding even better than expected, we go in and knock a few screws loose into Operation: Yamato."
"Yama-?" Toshinori narrowed his eyes. "I thought you don't want to be 'really' involved with Yamato?"
"I thought about it and I figured that I'm still going to be affected either way once it launches, might as well help out." David sighed, although his smirk is still there. "I'm confident we'll all pull through. But for now?" he gestured towards the remaining clutter of gadgets in the basement. "Let's finish the clean-up. Wouldn't want Midoriya to back out at his task last-minute, right?"
