Jonah stares up at Amphisbaena as it rears its dual heads back and utters a dual shrieking roar, with the blue head even belching a tongue of blue flame upward with a cracking explosion.
That must be Amphisomething! He mused while having trouble remembering its name but can still remember the description Stacy had given him of it.
Amphisbaena looks down at the Good Hunter with both heads.
The hell you will! Jonah thought as he quickens around to the side of the Monster Rex closest to its red head as his Insight was showing him that the blue head will try to incinerate him.
The red headed side looks down to him and belches a red mist that drifts over to Jonah that envelops him, causing him to wince. He quickens to the back of the Monster Rex.
I don't know why it would belch that red mist at me. Jonah thought, then looks at the blue fire now burning on the water. But what I do know is that I will need to get rid of that blue head first.
Amphisbaena cranes its necks around in the effort to see Jonah, with the blue head turning to its right and the red head turning to its left. With his Insight keened, he takes out the Hunter's Pistol, takes aim, and shoots the blue head, causing it to roar in pain upon hitting it in one of its eyes. He takes aim at the red head and shoots, also hitting it in one of its eyes as well.
Both heads are in too much pain to react to him properly and Jonah takes the opportunity by first putting his Hunter's Pistol away, then with both hands firmly on the handle he runs and leaps, practically flying the distance toward Amphisbaena while holding the Saw Cleaver high and unfurling it. With its back covered in large crystal growths along with a row along its blue neck, Jonah must keep his Insight keened in order to land a proper chop.
The Moon-scented Hunter manages to touch down onto a proper but small spot at the junction of the base of its necks just as he delivers a ferocious chop to the side of its blue neck with all of his strength, cutting through crystalline scales, flesh, and muscle. He manages to deliver a glancing blow to its vertebrae but fails to actually sever it as he continues swinging the Saw Cleaver past it. Yet it does do some damage as he had managed to chip away a piece of bone.
Both heads roar in pain, causing its whole body to tremble.
Still keening his Insight and still quickening, Jonah continues through with his chop as he twirls around to focus on the red side where only a jagged dorsal fin lines its neck. He chops into the base of the red neck with a fierce momentum; this time, rendering even more damage than he did to the blue one as he cuts all the way through its spine to practically decapitate it and cause the red neck fall forward like a tree.
Still keening his Insight while still quickening, Jonah takes out the Hunter's Pistol and shoots at the wound he caused in its blue neck at near point blank range to cause even more damage so that the blue neck also falls forward, effectively crippling Amphisbaena.
Jonah next quickens away by jumping high and far to land safely on the shore as his Insight had shown him Amphisbaena disintegrating. He looks back in time to see it do so and leave behind a large stone that sinks but what looks like a large liver that floats instead.
Well now that is that. Jonah thought as he puts away the Hunter's Pistol. So where is the entrance to the next floor down?
As if in answer, the entrance to the Floor below reveals itself as a rumbling in a wall near him and an opening with stairs going down.
Ah, there it is. He thought with relief and starts walking toward it. That Amphisomething was a bit more challenging; so that must mean the monsters are going to start getting a bit more challenging as well. I used three bullets, so I only have four left now. I really need to be careful.
The Good Hunter arrives on the Floor below. It is a forested area like the Under Resort where Rivira is located. He keens his Insight to get a sense of the possible monsters that will attack.
Nothing. No birthing places. He thought. Ah! This must be another one of those safety zones like Floor Eighteen. I wonder if there is a town like Rivira on this floor. No, or else I would have picked it up.
He walks on the path that will take him toward the entrance to the Floor below and comes upon trees with fruit growing on them. He picks one of them and examines it.
Are these edible I wonder? As he turns the oval pale green fruit around in his hand. It's not like any fruit I know of. Wait, my Insight should help me with this.
Jonah keens his Insight to find nothing noxious and eats it. Its flesh is an even paler green, almost white with a tart sweet taste. He eats it down to its core and throws that away.
That sure hit the spot. He thought while walking. I wonder if there are any other different fruit trees around here? If there isn't, I will return to this tree and eat a couple more of those fruit. Better than that travel bread. I think my Insight can help me with this one now. Before that, I wasn't really looking for anything like that.
The Moon-scented Hunter keens his Insight to find another fruit tree. This one has its branches laden with deep red fruit that are thinner than the previous fruit and hour-glass shaped. Jonah picks one and also takes a bite out of it, finding it to have an even firmer texture along with being sweeter without the tartness and continues eating it then tosses the core away. He takes out his canteen to take a drink of water.
That's right, I better go find some water. Jonah thought as he lowers his canteen after taking a drink.
He keens his Insight and finds a pond on this Floor. He heads over to it to find it safe to drink and empties the water out of his canteen and fill it up with water from this pond instead.
Jonah notices that the light is now dimmer.
It must be heading into night up on the surface. He thought. I should bed down for the night. Since this is a safe zone like that Under Resort, then I should be safe here. Although Miss Louis did tell me that Rivira was rebuilt over three hundred times due to monster invasions.
The Good Hunter finds an ideal place to bed down. Using the Saw Cleaver, he cuts some branches and lays them down like a nest, then lies upon it with the Saw Cleaver by his side.
It is now dim enough that one would need a torch in order to see about the place. Though he can see well in darkness.
In the Hidden Xenos Village the Floor above . . .
EEEEEEEHHHHHH?!
The group of Xenos had exclaimed in one loud voice as they now have awestruck expressions at a fellow Xenos, a Lamia named Laura.
"HE KILLED AMPHISBAENA?!" Leto shouted.
"That he did!" Laura said intently. "Its stone and liver are still in there, the entrance to the Floor below is open, and that adventurer is gone! Where else would he go?"
The Xenos all exchange stunned looks.
"I knew that adventurer was dangerous," Rayne grumbled. "He might have a change of heart and come back up here to kill us all."
"Will you stop trying to pick pointless fights!" Fear snapped. "He's just some adventurer that's exploring the Dungeon like every other adventurer before him!"
"If anything, he did us a huge favor getting rid of Amphisbaena for the time being," Leto said. "He opened up the convenient path to the Safety Zone underneath. Now we can harvest some of the Dungeon fruits, after he leaves of course."
"Since its night time he's probably sleeping down there until morning," Laura said.
"I'll keep watch for him to leave," Fear said.
"Careful he don't wake up and try to kill you," Rayne said snidely.
Jonah awakens to find that it is light once again. He gets up and keening his Insight once more, insures his expectation for the entrance to the next Floor below.
What's this? He thought as he also gets the image of one of those monsters that is part bird part woman like the two he had fought with yesterday.
He can see her in his mind perched well above the entrance to the Floor above, looking in his direction.
Was she watching me while I was sleeping?! He thought with bewilderment. If so, then she could have attacked me then and that would have been the end of me! No, I would have sensed it and awoke before she could have done so! Just what is going on around here?! I thought these monsters attacked us on sight? Am I missing something here?! Anyway, I better leave. I could go for another one of those fruits but it's back that way closer to that monster. So I will just have another one of these travel breads.
Of which he does, then has a drink of water.
Jonah arrives at the entrance to the next Floor down. But not before he stops to look back and wave goodbye back at that monster.
Upon descending to the next Floor, he is greeted by more forest. This more dense, yet oddly with trails that he can traversed upon.
This floor seems to have some degree of convenience to it. He thought while looking around. Ah yes, there are monsters out there. I can sense them and their birthing places.
With Saw Cleaver in hand, he starts walking and is soon surrounded by trees. His Insight shows a huge dragon-like monster that walks upright on two huge legs with small forelegs coming after him. He soon hears a shrieky roar along with the crashing of brush.
From out through the forest, with some trees getting pushed over by its massive though lean bulk comes a Bloodsaurus. It lunges at Jonah with a wide-open mouth but he is already past it with unfurled Saw Cleaver to chop its foot out from underneath it, causing the monster to screech in pain and topple over onto its side then back; then get chopped through the neck, throat to nape, effectively decapitating it.
The Bloodsaurus disintegrates, leaving only its stone for Jonah to destroy and he continues onward, only to be confronted by another of its kind and uses the same tactic against it with the same results.
"He knew I was there the whole time!" Fear said intently to the rest of her fellow Xenos.
"You let him see you?!" Rayne sneered.
"No, I didn't, I was hidden and watching him the whole time!" Fear protested. "But he stopped at the entrance to the Dense Forest Ravine to take a look back and wave at me! That adventurer clearly has sharp wits about his surroundings!"
"Anyway, we can harvest the fruit down there," Leto said. "Now let's go do it before more adventurers show up."
Jonah reaches the entrance to the next Floor below to find the same scenery from up above. Once again, he has to kill another Bloodsaurus and destroy its stone. Another Bloodsaurus attacks and he also chops off one of its feet the same way, except this time it starts falling forward of which the Moon-scented Hunter capitalizes on by jumping upward with a rising arc of the Saw Cleaver to also decapitate this one as well. That Bloodsaurus disintegrates to leave its stone for Jonah to destroy.
Down on the next Floor, he encounters Violas. He chops off the stalks but more keep appearing. Those stalks try to bite or even smash him but Jonah is too fast for it and he continues chopping off more of those stalks. He keeps dodging and chopping, much to the frustration of the monster plant.
Finally, a massive flower head emerges from the ground and opens up. Jonah rushes into it and chops it down the middle, finally killing it so that it disappears to leave behind its stone.
A yellow stone? He mused as he picks it up to examine it closely. Every other time it was a dark purple one with a glowing yellowish center. This one might be special so I'll keep it. Best make some room for it though.
The Moon-scented Hunter takes out some regular stones and crushes them. Afterwards, he pockets the yellow stone and moves on.
Down on the next Floor, he encounters a bunch of Venenthes. Not taking the time to count, Jonah quickens to each one, giving them a chop before they could react because of his Insight showing him shouting a noise at him that will hurt him. He chops the last one, just as its noise does hit him, causing him to shudder from his mind feeling as if something had exploded inside his head. He quickly recovers though and does not sense any more, then goes about destroying their stones.
On the next Floor down, Jonah instantly makes a wry expression.
Ugh, that stench! It's the smell of Yharnam at is worse!
The Good Hunter keens his Insight and ends up getting an image of lots of huge flowers scattered throughout this Floor. Thirty in all. The time he spent hunting throughout Yharnam and its surroundings he used to be confronted by such stenches. The first time, he vomited. Eventually though, he became nose blind to it.
Jonah waits as he takes steady breaths to try and become nose blind to this stench as well. He soon does and formulates a plan of action against those flowers that were the source of that smell that his Insight was showing him.
The Moon-scented Hunter approaches one of the flowers in question, a Viscum. His Insight showing him the flower quickly opening its head to reveal a huge cone and tentacles reaching out to grab him. It does not get to do that as it suddenly goes flying due to having been chopped with one stroke of the Saw Cleaver.
He quickens to each Viscum, chopping them down in one stroke. The going is difficult due to the vegetation throughout the floor. The Viscum sense something wrong and all open to reveal their huge cone center and tentacles thrashing around in their attempt to get at Jonah.
Jonah manages to chop them all down, cutting the last one. He takes a moment to look around, then goes on to the next Floor down, only to be confronted by the same stench from up above, and sighs.
Here we go again. He thought.
Back up in the Safety Zone, the Xenos had finished harvesting what fruits they could find. As they return, Fear stops to stare at the entrance to the Twenty-ninth Floor.
"Hey, Fear, what are you doing?" Rayne demanded while looking back at her as she holds a basket of fruit.
"I was just thinking about that adventurer," Fear answered. "Is he going to be all right? The regulars are just going to start becoming more powerful from the Dense Forest Ravine downward."
"Will you stop worrying about that stupid adventurer!" Rayne snapped as she repositions herself to face Fear fully.
"I feel concerned for him!" Fear answered intently at Arachne.
Rayne slaps her own forehead while shaking it and grumbling with gnashed teeth, then lowers her hand to scuttle up to the Harpy. "I swear you're as bad as Ray! What next? You wanna be held by a male adventurer? Ray fantasizes about that. If you go after that adventurer, you think he's gonna greet you like an old friend?" Poking her finger into her chest. "No, he'll slaughter you 'cause all he'll see is a monster that needs to be relieved of its stone."
"Actually, he's been destroying the stones," Leto corrected.
"Either way, let's go, Fear," Rayne commanded. "If he can defeat Amphisbaena all by himself, then he can take care of himself in the Lower Floors, and probably the Deeper Floors."
The Xenos leave. Fear takes a moment to look back, then turns and joins her fellow Xenos.
Jonah managed to fight his way through more of those stinking monster flowers on the next Floor down. Further along on that Floor before he reached the exit he was confronted by two Power Bulls that he killed.
He is now down on the next Floor where he is confronted by a Grand Treant as it waves its branches around while making a rumbling bass noise. The Good Hunter tenses with unfurled Saw Cleaver in both hands as he figures out how to kill the Grand Treant.
All it can move are its branches. He thought. If I can just chop off as many as I can then I can put it at a disadvantage. Alright!
He takes a deep breath then keens his Insight and attacks by quickening around the tree monster, chopping off one branch after another in a single strike. Its severed branches flying ever which way.
The Grand Treant rumbles more loudly in what must be pain as it starts swaying back and forth. In a few seconds all of its lower branches are gone. The Moon-scented Hunter twirls and with a huge overhead arc chops deeply into its humanoid face. The Grand Treant groans deeply and Jonah removes the Saw Cleaver from its now clefted face and next starts chopping into its trunk just underneath its wrecked face at a pace of what must be a dozen strokes per second.
Jonah finally stops upon seeing that he had hacked nearly all the way through. Rapidly furling his Saw Cleaver he next slashes, or more accurately in this case, saws at the base. Due to the nature of the Saw Cleaver, its blade and saw do more damage than a standard blade or saw could do.
After a dozen rapid strokes, he furls the Saw Cleaver and puts in on this back, then pushes on the heavily injured Grand Treant with all of his strength and it falls over with one loud long rumble of despair to crash onto the Dungeon floor. It goes still and disintegrates to leave behind its stone for Jonah to destroy.
The Good Hunter continues along and encounters another Grand Treant that blocks the entrance to the Floor below. Like the first one, he repeats that same tactic and is soon on the next Floor below where he encounters two more Grand Treants and once again uses that same tactic.
After dealing with them, Jonah arrives at the exit that will take him to the next Floor below and descends.
NOTE:
The information I got about the Dungeon is from the Danmachi Wiki, and is generally lacking in information further down into the Dungeon, so I will be forced to use my imagination. As for the monsters that Jonah was fighting after Amphisbaena, it seems to make sense that they should be in the Dense Forest Ravine with the Bloodsauruses.
