Danny quickly shut his laptop, doing his best to stay calm. He had to get to Danielle as quickly as possible. He needed to see for himself that she was okay and that this "NeoSuperboy" was actually being good to her. It was like when Johnny was trying to swindle Jazz out of her body, only a much deeper need. He was about to transform when Tucker placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Dude, chill!" cried the geek. "You gotta think this through before-" Danny suddenly yelped as he felt a jolt in his shoulder, causing him to back up a bit.
"Dude, YOU GOTTA GET THAT STATIC SHIRT THING UNDER CONTROL!" roared the ghost boy. "I'm starting to think that it's not the shirt that's the problem." Tucker was about to say something in response, only for Jazz to open his door rapidly.
"Danny, don't you dare fly off!" roared the redhead. "You need to think rationally before you do something incredibly stupid." The ghost boy shook his head in denial.
"No way in heck am I letting this go on without at least meeting this boy. Once I see what kind of kid he is and make sure Dani is really happy, then I'll come back. I need to lay down the law here, especially since that one pic had them looking really close. I already failed Dani everywhere else as a father but I'm not failing here." Jason then walked in, his eyes narrowed.
"Just talk this out with us before you go on some mindless crusade," stated the Gothamite. "Let me tell you from personal experience that it's a very bad idea. If you talk it out with us, you can at least have a plan going into this. From pictures I've seen she actually looks like she enjoys her little hero group." The ghost boy narrowed his eyes in response, a growl escaping his throat.
"You knew. This whole time you knew about this and didn't say anything, didn't you?" The red hood winced as he kept his eyes forward, feeling no shame.
"I only heard what others said, having no means to confirm it. It also wasn't my place to say anything, whether they were rumors or not. You had a responsibility to the team and to Amity Park. I was also waiting to see a maturity in you that would lead to you being ready to even start being a dad. You've come close, but there was a little more I needed to see before I could even think of bringing it up."
Danny breathed slower as he looked down, trying to process everything as the man continued. "I understand that you feel responsible, but you also have to remember that she's been living her own life without you. If you go in all guns blazing and looking for a fight, you could destroy the happiness she's found. Just take a breath and let us talk you through everything before you go flying off into the distance." The team leader looked down, taking a deep breath.
"I… I just really need to see her. I wasn't going to fight unless there was real trouble. I understand that if I went in looking for trouble I MIGHT have started something but… Who am I kidding? There's no way I wouldn't have had some fight in this state."
Danny sat down on his bed, taking a deep sigh. "There's this need to protect Dani that's just as strong as my need to protect Juleka. It's not the same emotions, but the strength is there. Is this the paternal instinct stuff?" Jazz sat beside him, rubbing the back of his head.
"Yes," plainly stated the redhead. "You love her as your child and want to protect her, but you need to think clearly. While I'll admit I was being stubborn that time I was dating Johnny, it was partly your tendency to rush in unprepared that almost made it too late for me to be rescued. You have a very good heart, little bro, but you need to let it work with that big brain of yours before you do something you'll come to regret. Let me run you through the things that could have happened."
The girl quickly placed a hand on Danny's shoulder, rubbing it in an attempt to soothe him. "If you dragged her back here blindly, she would have been in danger of Vlad taking her all the time. Then Mom and Dad would be another big threat to her if they found out about her. On top of that, she would hate you for taking her away from the happiness she's found. You can't tell me that her hatred and the danger will be worth bringing her here."
Danny kept his head down, not denying his sister's words. "Then there's the fact that you're currently on good terms with the Justice League. Those good terms will go away if you end up doing any lasting damage to the others in that group of hers. Not to mention you'd really have Batman on your back. We've seen on the news what Batman can do to people if you hurt one of his own."
The ghost boy froze at this, Jason looking away with a slight growl as he nodded his head. Jazz rubbed her brother's back before continuing. "You have got to get a hold of yourself before you ruin everything you've built up and want to build up. No one wants you to go to the extremes that Mom and Dad go to keep us safe, especially over something that clearly isn't bad for Dani." Danny sighed at this, rubbing his temples.
"You're right. I'm sorry. I can't help the way I feel. She's precious to me. There are so many things I feel the need to teach her."
He looked down at his hands, doing his best to think. "There are so many mistakes I made in my life that I want to help her avoid if I can. I also want to be a part of her life, even if she doesn't want to live here with me. There are so many things I feel but can't explain because I mostly have no idea what the heck I'd even do to be a dad. All of these worries and concerns keep me up all night some nights."
Jason slowly frowned as the ghost boy hugged himself. "If it weren't for my secret identity, I'd bring this to the guild. I can't work through this alone. I feel so anxious just thinking about what could happen to Dani." The red hood stepped forward, sitting on the other side of Danny.
"If you're gonna go see her, I've heard the others call her Ellie instead of Dani," informed the man. "It's apparently something she came up with on her own. Superman came to Gotham trying to get help with her legal status, coming straight to Bruce. From what I hear, the papers should be finished soon. Before you get up in arms, there's no adoption papers involved."
The ghost boy sent glowing eyes towards Jason, only for the glow to cease as he continued to look the man's way. "She's made quite an impact on Superman and his family, in the best way of course. I can tell she gets it from you, the ability to affect others. They have her staying with a family member so that she's not out on the streets." Danny looked down again, still processing everything.
"That's good. I don't like the idea of her living off the streets like she has been…" He then looked back towards Jason, his frown still carrying a serious tone. "This boy she's with, is he a good one?" The Gothamite nodded his head in response.
"If he wasn't, his folks would have worked hard to straighten him out. Damian also wouldn't call him one of his friends if he was bad news. The Demon Brat is usually a good judge of character, and yes Blue I'm saying it affectionately this time. In the end, as distrustful as he is, he would trust Jon with his life." Danny slowly nodded his head as he took in this information, only for a knock to be heard at the door.
"Pardon my intrusion," requested the voice of Edna. "You have visitors, Master Daniel." Danny narrowed his eyes, confusion on his face.
"Visitors?" questioned the ghost boy. The group made their way out of the room, expanding into the main area of the manor. Everyone but Danny and Jason were shocked to see Superman standing in the middle of the area. To his sides were Connor and Kara, Jon standing in front of him with a nervous look. Clark nodded his head with a small smile.
"Sorry for popping in unannounced," apologized the Man of Steel. "Superboy told me that this meeting was necessary after you found out about Ellie and Jon." Jon slowly waved his hand, trying to remain respectful.
"Hi, Mr. Phantom sir," greeted the boy. "Ellie says a lot of good things about you." He chuckled nervously as Danny crossed his arms, Connor nodding his head.
"Well at least you're handling the clone familial situation better than Kal did starting out, Danny," stated the clone boy. "I'm Kent from the guild, but you can call me Kon. When I saw your response to Jon and Ellie being a couple I figured it would be better to deal with this now." Danny looked towards Connor, his eyes still narrowed. He smirked as he tilted his head.
"So you're TheCoolerKent," stated the ghost hero. Superboy frowned at this, knowing what was coming. Jon looked towards his older brother, growling with a pout.
"CONNOR!" cried the youngest Kryptonian. "I thought you said I was the coolest!" Danny chuckled to himself at the chaos he made, Kara shaking her head with a giggle.
"If I took the last name I'd probably be in the running for that title," stated the blonde girl. "Can we focus on why we came here?" Clark nodded his head at this, his smile still remaining.
"Kara's right," agreed the Man of Steel. "This is a family affair, one that I'd like resolved before it gets out of hand. Not just for Jon's sake but for Danielle's as well. If I may, Danny." Danny frowned at this, looking towards Superman.
"So you guys did find out," huffed the local hero. "Did you find out the same way as Dick?" Jon poked his fingers together, looking away as he shook his head.
"Technically Ellie told me and Robin about her being a clone and Robin traced things back to you," honestly answered the boy. "I didn't realize Dad was home at the time so he heard the entire conversation BUT Robin has been keeping your secret to himself. Then when our other friend joined us Ellie told her. We haven't said anything to anyone else about this, sir." Danny rolled his eyes, groaning to himself.
"Dude, just call me Danny. The sir stuff is starting to get on my nerves." The youngest Kryptonian looked down at this, nodding his head.
"Sorry. It's just…" Jon looked Danny in the eye, a small frown on his face. "The way Ellie talks about you, you're an important person in her life. She's important to me so I want to be on good terms with you."
The ghost boy's frown softened a bit as the super kid continued. "I don't know exactly how you feel about her, but to her you're a major part of her world. She's always worried about living up to who you are and I don't think the clone thing is the entire reason behind it. I want to leave a good impression on the guy she sees as a father because I want to be part of her family just as much as she's become part of ours." Danny shifted his gaze towards Clark, causing the man to nod his head.
"Ellie saved Jon on top of giving him someone special in his life that he didn't have to hide his powers from," began the powerhouse. "With everything she's done, we gave her a place on my mother's farm. She's made herself a place with us, a place that you're always welcome to visit. I know a thing or two about having people be against you because they don't understand you. It's not easy dealing with the criticism and the hatred, so I figured Ellie could use a place to come back to until Plasmius is dealt with."
Danny growled at being reminded of his arch enemy, the bigger hero deciding to continue. "Like with the Titans Dark team, we only want to help. It's why I'm having Batman help me with getting legal documents made so that Ellie can legally exist. We had to do the same thing for Connor back when he needed to attend certain events." The Phantom sighed at this, slowly nodding his head.
"Alright," huffed the ghost boy. "That's actually pretty good. I was worried about how we would handle helping her when Vlad is finally beaten. She's been through a lot." Kara smirked at this, leaning forward a bit.
"Believe me, she's told us plenty about all of this," reassured the blonde. "Speaking of her, how do you feel about Ellie? You're awfully protective of her for someone who calls her his cousin. You can't blame me for being curious." Danny looked down at this, sighing to himself as he smiled.
"Honestly, I had to think a lot about that after Jason told me how the cloning stuff is usually taken. Then I learned that how Vlad cloned me technically is half of the way ghosts have kids in the Ghost Zone. After thinking about my life and where I wanted to go with it, I decided that I wouldn't mind having Danielle as my kid. We might be two years apart in physical age, but it's something that I feel like I really want." Jon grinned at this, holding his hands behind his back.
"I know Ellie's gonna love hearing that," added the boy. "It's something she talked about really wanting." Danny jerked back at this, a surprised look on his face.
"Wait really? You're not messing with me, right? That's-" The ghost boy was cut off as a wisp of cold air left his mouth. Jazz suddenly squealed, causing the ghost boy to look back as she scooped something up.
"He's so cute!" cried the redhead. She spun around a bit, Scamp whining as he rubbed himself into her arms. "Who's a cute widdle baby!? You are! Yes you are!" Danny's eyes widened at this, causing him to point towards the otter.
"That's the spirit guardian from the picture Megan sent. Spirit Guardians don't go far from their charge. That means…" A figure suddenly popped into view, floating as she hugged against the boy's chest. He looked down, watching as Ellie rubbed her head into his chest.
"Don't talk for a bit," pleaded the ghost girl. "Just… just give me this, please. Just let it be real." Danny smiled softly at this, hugging the girl back. Jon's grin turned into a smile as he nodded his head.
"Yeah she wanted to see how you felt about the whole relationship thing," stated the boy. "She asked us to help her with it after Connor told us about your reaction to me and her being together." Danny suddenly looked his way, one of his brows raised.
"Oh right," began the ghost boy. "There's still that to talk about." Danielle looked up at Danny, a pleading look on her face.
"Don't be like that," pleaded the ghost girl. "He made me feel like I had a place in this world aside from being a failed clone. He's a really good guy. Please… Dad," She smiled as Danny jerked his head back, his face squinted.
'Oh my gosh! This guilt feels worse than when I felt something bad happen!' The boy immediately cleared his throat as he tried to save face. "He makes you happy, right?" Ellie slowly nodded her head, unleashing her pouting face.
Danny sighed at this, shaking his head as he glanced towards Jon. "We'll talk about this later." He then turned his attention back to Danielle. "Right now, unless there's more stuff Supes and I need to talk about, there are some people that will really want to meet you. Last I remember you don't have a phone so let's make this as quick as possible, Dani." Ellie smirked at this, pulling out the phone Damian had given her.
"Got this as a bridge of trust from Robin. I'll be able to at least talk with you while I'm staying in Metropolis. I plan to visit more when Vlad's out of the picture but I kinda like it there. I hope you don't mind me having two places I call home. Also, it's Ellie now." Danny sighed at this, shaking his head.
"Alright, Ellie. I'll be fine with it only if you're fine with me visiting when I can. If you're gonna start calling me Dad then I gotta act like a real one. Also, you might wanna suck in your gut when Aunt Jazz gets a hold of you." The ghost girl tilted her head when she was released, only to suddenly be grabbed up in a hug by Jazz.
"OH MY GOSH!" cried the redhead. "You're like a little girl Danny! You're so adorable! I just wanna take you to the mall and dress you up like a doll!" Ellie huffed as she felt a tight grip around her, struggling a bit.
"AUNT JAZZ!" cried the ghost girl. "You're crushing me!" Jazz blinked at this, loosening her hold on the girl.
"I'm already an aunt. I'm going to murder Vlad for hurting this precious ray of sunshine." Ellie harrumphed as she crossed her arms, not liking that she was being held in the air outside of her own volition. Jason chuckled at this, slowly shaking his head. Connor walked over to be by his side, a small smile on his face.
"It's nice to see that Ellie has what she wanted," stated the Kryptonian clone. He watched Danny laugh at the look on his clone's face, something that caused Connor to frown. "Jason, didn't Dick say something about having younger siblings at one point? A pair of twins?" Jason nodded his head, a small frown on his face.
"Yeah," acknowledged the red hood. "What's on your mind?" Superboy pointed towards the laughing ghost hero.
"It might just be me, but doesn't Danny look a lot like Dick? I almost thought he was Dick for a moment when you guys walked into the room. It's a bit uncanny." Jason narrowed his eyes at the Kryptonian before looking back at Danny. His frown hardened as he picked out the boy's appearance, beginning to see similarities.
"…He looks like a younger Dick. There are way too many similarities for it to be a coincidence." The more he thought about it, the more the Gothamite began to pick out the subtle differences that made Danny look unique. He narrowed his eyes further, leaning forward. 'Where have I seen this before?'
Danny turned his head to where Jason had a better angle, the grin on his face causing the Red Hood to jerk back. The flashes of a picture of a smaller boy popped up in front of the ghost boy's face. "Charlotte's Web. It can't be. Can play the ocarina, the same features, in the right age range."
Jason's eyes narrowed even further, having the attention of the Kryptonians. "I need to figure this out before I bring anything to Bruce. If I'm right, Danny Fenton… is Donell Grayson."
Inkaliber: I bet you weren't expecting that for a chapter ending, were ya? Not only does Danny learn of Ellie and Jon's relationship, but he also learns of the mutual desire for him to have a parental relationship with her. We also see Jason and Connor beginning to theorize that Danny is Donell Grayson. What will come of this and how will Jason find out? That's for us to find out at a later time.
In any case, I hope this double release will help act as an apology for taking so long to put out content for the story. I will try to find a way to keep working with the crazy things going on, but I cannot guarantee that I'll be able to keep up a weekly update schedule for this. All the same, I hope you can enjoy the story regardless.
