The rain poured down on a woman in a dark gray hoodie and matching sweatpants as she frantically fled the scene of another woman who was unconscious lying on the pavement only 20 feet from her. A screaming baby was in the woman's arms and wrapped up in her coat. The woman spoke softly to the infant.
"It's ok baby girl. Mommy is going to take very good care of you. Don't you cry now."
The little girl in the woman's arms continued wailing and she covered her more to keep the rain off her.
"Hey Ed, this is the second message I've left you. Maybe your stuck in traffic. I thought you said our reservation at Peter Luger's was for 8 o'clock. It's now almost 9. Anyways give me a call when you get this message. I'm still at the precinct with a mountain of paperwork to fill out. I love you. Be safe."
Jamie hung up his phone and tried to wipe the worry from his mind. But it wasn't going away. His gut was telling him something was wrong. As he was about to set his phone back down on the desk, he saw there was one missed call from Danny. Then a voicemail popped up. He quickly listened to the message.
"Hey kid. It's me. You must be busy with a mountain of paperwork or out on a call. The reason for this call is, you should get to the hospital. Eddie's been hurt. The docs were really vague on specifics. But if you can get to the hospital as soon as you can, I'm sure they'll explain everything. Be safe getting here little brother. We're at Saint Benjamin's hospital. We'll be here waiting for you."
Jamie hung up his phone and placed it into his jacket. His mind was in a panic, but he had to force himself to calm down. Jumping into the car he made his way to Saint Benjamin's. It took him almost an hour to get there, seeing it was Friday night and everything, the roads would be jammed up. When he found a parking spot in the parking garage at the hospital, he hurriedly went in through the Emergency Department's doors and went to the front reception desk.
"Hi. I'm Sargent Jamie Reagan. My wife Eddie Reagan was brought in about an hour and a half ago."
The nurse behind the counter gave Jamie a sympathetic look and typed in Eddie's name.
"Ok Sargent Reagan, looks like Eddie is in room 106 in recovery."
Jamie felt a lump begin to form in his throat, but he swallowed it and nodded his head.
"Thank-you."
Jamie left the front reception desk and made his way past the waiting room, where he suddenly heard Danny's voice.
"Hey kid. There you are."
Turning, Jamie felt Danny pull him into a hug.
"Danny what happened?"
Just as Danny was about to speak as he let go of Jamie, a doctor came out into the waiting room.
"Family of Eddie Reagan?"
The rest of the family stood up and in a group with Jamie. The doctor then approached them.
"I'm Doctor Ryerson. I operated on Eddie. She just got out of surgery and she's in recovery."
Jamie held a hand up for a moment.
"Wait, surgery? My wife is pregnant. Did something happen to our baby?"
Doctor Ryerson looked at Jamie and seemed to sadden a little.
"There was a lot of bleeding and there was no baby. We believe someone took the baby from her."
Jamie lowered himself to the chair and looked to Doctor Ryerson.
"I want to see her."
Doctor Ryerson nodded, and the rest of the family sat down while Jamie stood up again. Danny was the only one to speak out of the rest of the family.
"Don't worry kid. I'm going to find out what happened."
Jamie could see fire in Danny's eyes. Danny clapped Jamie on the shoulder. Following Doctor Ryerson, Jamie could feel his legs become like limp noodles and he had to force himself to stay upright. Finding room 106, Doctor Ryerson opened the door and held it open for him. Going inside, Jamie felt his breath catch in his throat as Doctor Ryerson explained Eddie's condition.
"She should be asleep for at least another three hours before she comes out of the anesthesia. She has stitches going down her stomach. As I said out in the waiting room, there was a lot of bleeding. We got it under control. It'll take time for her to heal. Someone did this to her. I would hope your baby is out there somewhere. I'll let you have some time with her."
Doctor Ryerson left, and it was just Jamie and Eddie.
"Ed, I'm here now. Who did this to you?"
He sat down in the chair and ran a hand through her blond tresses, the only sound in the room at the moment was the monitors keeping track of her vitals. Jamie felt his eyes getting heavy, and soon, he found his head gently falling into Eddie's lap.
Sometime later, he heard a groan and then felt slight movement.
"Jamie? What happened?"
Jamie's head popped up and head sat up straight in the chair next to the bed.
"Hey babe. I'm glad your awake. I was so worried about you."
Eddie looked around, very confused at the moment.
"What happened to me?"
Jamie felt tears come to his eyes, but he didn't let them fall.
"Someone called 9-1-1 because they found you on the sidewalk and bleeding. You went into surgery. But you're ok now."
Jamie found he couldn't bring himself to tell Eddie what had happened to their baby. Only because he didn't know. Eddie found herself deep in thought for a minute. Then tears started to fall.
"Our baby. Someone has our baby. I remember parking my car and getting out. You called me and I went to answer it. Someone pushed me against a chain link fence and then I felt pain. I didn't see much after that. But I heard her. Our baby. I heard her crying. She's still out there somewhere Jamie. We have to get her back."
Jamie nodded his head and let a few tears fall down his cheeks.
"We'll find who did this to you babe. Danny's already working on it."
