Make It Reign
Late-December 2022
It was late afternoon and Barry was at home with Caitlin, the girls and the twins. It was still Christmas break for the kids' school. Zari and Adri were starting on their winter assignment that they needed completed before school started, while Caitlin was looking after the twins. Kara and Lara had gone out to visit Alex in relation to Reign while Barry worked, although he couldn't concentrate.
"Zari," Barry finally called out; he was at the desk at the back of the living area where they had previously kept the Totems, which was what was on his mind right now.
"Yes, daddy Barry?" Zari asked, her head appearing around the door.
"I've been thinking about the Air Totem," Barry mused. "If I'm meant to be the temporary bearer of it, I should really hold it and see if I can actually use it."
"I'll go get it!" Zari was only too happy to run off and upstairs. With that, Caitlin appeared in the room, holding one of the twins.
"You know, this Totem and hero stuff is still new to me," Caitlin stated, Barry amused at this line considering her multiverse alternates who were usually in the hero business from day one, along with Barry himself, "but can you be the Flash and the bearer of the Air Totem too?"
"The Totem of Zambezi are unique in they were made by all Seven Forces of the Universes, working together. The Sphere of the Gods, the Force that magic comes from, made the gems and each Force powers a different Totem. The Air Totem was powered by the Speed Force, who is the Force of the Universes behind my speedster powers, so everyone's saying I should be able to, and if I am…" Barry paused at this.
"If you are what?" Caitlin asked, rearranging her hold the baby she was carrying.
"Well, Ray Palmer is the Bearer of the Water Totem and my business partner, and friend. I'll have to tell him about me being the Flash and current Bearer of the Air Totem if we're to allow unity and total trust among the other Bearers," Barry explained. "From what we know of what's coming, we'll be needed for the Totems to get to full power together."
"I've yet to meet half of these Totem Bearers," Caitlin mused just as Zari came back, holding the now familiar black ornate box with red swirls.
"You've actually met half of them," Zari spoke up, having heard the conversation. "Six Totem Bearers. You have met Barry, Nora, and Mila, since she's your sister's girlfriend, then it's you so, you haven't met two: Mari and Ray." Barry chuckled at his daughter's cleverness, giving her a hug as Caitlin paused, surprised at not having realized that.
"Once we know for sure, we'll need to arrange a meet up," Barry told Caitlin as he took the box from Zari. "Thanks sweetie," he added to the girl, who smiled.
Opening the box, Barry was met with the sight of a red pendant on a chain; not too dissimilar to the Fire Totem, he recognized, but he didn't feel any instant connection, no fainting or intense focus such as Caitlin and Ray had experienced with their Totems – but they were the true new Bearers of those Totems, and Barry was just a placeholder, so maybe that was a good thing.
"Okay," Barry stated, picking up the gem from within. Instantly he felt a familiarity and an affinity with it, like it was some extension of his, but not a part of him. It felt… good.
He held it up and instantly a gust of wind struck up in the room, dying down after a moment. The baby Caitlin held giggled at this while Zari smiled.
"Well, that settles it then," Caitlin was the one to voice this. "It seems you're the temporary Totem Bearer."
"Yeah," Barry stated, putting the gem down and looking at Zari now. "Do you trust me with this, Zari?"
"Of course I do," Zari nodded at this.
"Well then, I think the next step is telling Ray who I am," Barry sighed, closing his laptop now. It was better now or never.

In the Mojave Desert, more commonly known as Death Valley, in an inconspicuous cave, a familiar woman in black stood before the flickering hologram of a darker-skinned Kryptonian woman – the same one Kara had spoken with the other day in her Fortress of Solitude.
"The time of Resurrection is near, our dear Reign," Selena An-Jay told the other Kryptonian woman. "Once you have gained complete control, you can breach the planet's mantle and start the terraforming process. Krypton will be reborn in Juru's image."
"And what of the so-called-Heroes of this world? The rogue Kryptonians who defile the House of El?" Reign asked the hologram.
"The ones called Superman and Supergirl – and even Super Dog – have chosen their paths. It is a shame true Els can't join us in our new vision of Krypton… I could have gotten more information from the female El if they hadn't blocked our signal," Selena stated.
"Our Fortress is… mundane compared to theirs," Reign agreed; this wasn't exactly a Fortress, it was a rudimental version, constructed from the ship Reign had arrived in as a baby and inserted into a cave, but it made do for what they needed to do.
"Their Fortress will be the heart of New Krypton," Selena stated. "The place the Cult of Juru will be reborn. No one can stop us now."
"No one can…" Reign began, but paused, and her voice suddenly changed. "Super… girl… man… can…" she groaned, shaking herself.
"You must fight this petty human personality you have developed!" Selena demanded of Reign.
"I… please… help…" but as she spoke, her eyes grew red again and Reign stood up straight. "I will prevail against Samantha Arias," she stated now, holding Sam off in her mind.
"The human deserves no name. You are Reign," Selena stated.
"I am Reign," the Kryptonian woman smirked at that.

Kara, Lara, Alex and John were in Fort Rozz, the former Kryptonian ship and current Justice League home base. They were in the main meeting room, a large, cavernous area they had converted for Justice League meetings – although today this wasn't a meeting for the League.
"So, explain to me again why we're doing this here and not at STAR Labs?" Kara asked, with Lara by her feet.
"Too dangerous in STAR Labs," Alex explained. "We can't risk further damage to the building or Central-National City, come to think of it."
"We're summoning an evil Kryptonian who may or may not try to escape," John added. "She's been known to vanish into thin air; she has a magical element to her."
"And she's also my friend," Alex pointed out. "If this goes wrong…"
"We'll try and save her," Kara pointed out to her sister, more for Alex's hope than hers. "She's a part of me, she's made from my mom and dad so she's my sister too."
"I know," Alex said with a nod. It had been odd to think her old college friend had always been her sister's biological sister. Now though, Alex could see the similarity between the two. "What did Kandar say to that?"
"He was surprised, but overall loves the idea of having another sister. He wanted to be here too, but I told him that wasn't the best idea until Sam is Sam again," Kara said back. "Besides, he doesn't have the full Kryptonian powers, having grown up on Daxam instead," Kara added of her brother.
"Now, love, do you have the item?" John asked Alex, interrupting more conversation; Alex nodded, pulling out a pair of sunglasses. Kara frowned at this.
"They're Sam's," Alex explained. "She left them at my place last time we met up and disappeared soon after."
"It's an item of the person we're summoning," John explained, taking the sunglasses from Alex. "It will allow me to connect to her body, to bring her here so I can perform the Cleansing of Souls."
"Cleansing of Souls?" Kara asked.
"It's our best bet to get Ms. Arias free of Reign, but it's not without its problems," John explained, again now drawing symbols on the floor like he had last time with Nyxlygsptlnz. "It's the most complicated spell there it, made to draw the soul free of all darkness that surrounds it."
"Didn't you do that on Sara Lance a few years back?" Kara asked, the spell sounding familiar.
"No. That was the John of this world, and that was a spell to reunite the soul with the body after our White Canary was resurrected. I did similar on my home world for Sara before magic was destroyed there," John explained, and Kara nodded at that. "This spell it to purify the soul, to bring Samantha back to us. You both being here should help with that. Alex, you know the real Sam, that will help bring her forward. Kara you are biologically connected to her, which will strengthen the spell."
"As long as it can free Sam from Reign," Alex stated defiantly, John giving a little grunt in a reply; Kara noticed something seemed off between John and Alex but didn't want to push it – John had only asked Alex once more on what she was keeping from him, given Nyxlygsptlnz's warning the other day, and when asked, she'd had told him she'd dealt with it and that was that.
"Alex, we may have to face a horrible truth," Kara voiced to her sister at this, Alex instantly shaking her head at this, but Kara persevered. "Sam may not be able to be freed from Reign. Sam could be just… gone."
"No, I refuse to believe that," Alex stated. "She's in there, in Reign… somewhere."
"I want that too and we will try everything we can. But if she's not…" Kara tried, but Alex moved away from Kara, who sighed at this. Lara whined at Alex's reaction, too. "If she's not, I will have to do what needs to be done to save the world." The two sisters looked at each other. Alex knew what Kara meant: If Kara needed, she would end Reign and Sam.
"Well, we'll soon know," John pointed out; the sunglasses were in the center of a circular enchantment circle. "Stand back girls, this could get nasty."
"I'm ready," Kara stated, eyes lighting up just in case. Lara gave a growl as if to agree.
-SuperEarth-
Back in Central-National, Barry knocked on the apartment door, knowing Ray was in and was pleased to see the man when he opened the door. Part of Barry wondered if he should do this later and be with Kara now, but Kara had stated what she was doing was too personal; Barry was keeping a mental eye on Kara's mind, in case his wife needed him or his powers through the bond.
"Barry," Ray stated, smiling, bringing him into a hug. "What do I owe the pleasure? Don't you have kids to look after?"
"Oh, Caitlin is working overtime today," Barry dismissed. He was weirdly nervous, maybe because he never had to 'out' himself as the Flash to anyone before now, apart from his family but that had been easier, as when he'd become the Flash, all his friends, colleagues and future wife had been involved.
"Yo Barry!" The familiar redheaded girl, AJ, appeared behind her brother.
"Hey," Barry smiled, knowing she was in – he had texted her after all – but that didn't alleviate his nerves as Ray closed the door behind his friend.
"Welcome to my abode," Ray stated. "Sorry it's in a bit of a mess… it's just AJ's dog…"
"Houdini is a good puppy!" AJ protested.
"And yet is Kryptonian…" Ray added, to a pause from AJ; she went red slightly. "And needs some training," Barry tried not to chuckle at that, thinking if Houdini was anything like his older brother El from Mutant, training would not be easy.
"Well, I have been here before," Barry pointed out to his friend – in the earlier days of developing their joint project, they'd been in each other's homes enough times.
"Oh yeah, good point," Ray paused. "Was there something you wanted to talk about? Is it the project? Is there a problem?!" Ray seemed concerned now and Barry had to chuckle at his concern.
"No, the project is fine. It's just… you know the other day when you got the Water Totem and told me you were ATOM?" Barry started.
"Oh yeah. I admit I was a little disappointed at your reaction," Ray stated as AJ lingered. "Is this because of me being the ATOM? Do you feel insecure?"
"Insecure? What?!" Barry paused, finding the question ridiculous, but before Ray could say anymore there was a bark and Houdini appeared out of nowhere, running at Barry; in that instant he figured this was the best option as he, too, ran forward at Flash speeds to catch the dog, tackling it to the floor and rolling over. The puppy didn't seem bothered as it licked Barry's face now. Barry chuckled at the licks but quickly regained his composure as he sat up into a sitting position.
"You… ran…" Ray paused. "Like really-really ran…"
"He's the Flash, Ray," AJ spoke up at this, moving forward to claim her dog back from Barry. "Basically, all over the multiverse he's the Flash. Apart from when his cousin is the Flash."
"So… not insecure about me being the ATOM then," Ray concluded, moving forward and offering Barry a hand to get up. "Cousin?"
"She doesn't exist here," Barry dismissed of the Rae mention. "You're not… mad?" Barry asked, grateful for the help – not that he really needed it – but seeing it as a sign on friendship.
"I'm a little confused, definitely shocked, maybe a little betrayed," Ray pointed out, to a pause from Barry, "but not mad. This is really cool. I mean you're the leader of the Justice League and… wait, have you been sticking me with Mari all this time?! She started the Kermit nickname!"
"Well… that was Kara's decision," Barry paused at this, realizing he'd just outed Kara too.
"Kara… she's Supergirl. Oh, it all makes sense," Ray hit his head at this.
"They've been trolling you, brother," AJ pointed out.
"Wait, but you knew," Ray turned to his sister.
"You know my powers, my connection to one of the Forces of the Universes," AJ held her dog-free hand up at this in defense, "besides, it wasn't my secret to tell."
"No, true it wasn't," Ray pointed out. "But why now? Why come out as the Flash to me now?"
"Because you're a Totem Bearer," Barry pointed out. "And so am I… for the moment anyway."
"What do you mean?" Ray asked.
"The Air Totem, it's powered by the Speed Force which is what gives me my powers; I can connect to it, use it, until it's true Bearer comes of age," Barry explained. "The True Bearer is too young to use it – especially against a darkness that is coming."
"Who is the True Bearer?" Ray asked at this.
"Not my secret to tell," Barry echoed AJ's sentiments here, not wanting to tell Ray it was Zari – not yet anyway. "But the point is, for all six Totems to work in harmony, we need to be truthful with each other, we need to trust one another, and with me keeping this secret from you… it just wasn't fair."
"No, I suppose it wasn't," Ray mused. "But it is kind of awesome though. I mean, you're the Flash, I'm ATOM and AJ here is…"
"No. I don't have a hero name," AJ stated, shaking her head at this.
"…reluctant," Barry concluded for his friend, smirking at AJ as he said this. She stuck her tongue out at him at this revelation.
"Well, I think we have some talking to do," Ray spoke up at this.
-SuperEarth-
At Fort Rozz, John was chanting as the enchanted circle started to glow. Kara, eyes now back to normal, looked over to Alex whose eyes were transfixed on the sunglasses now starting to float in the middle of the circle, glowing slightly too.
"Come on…" Alex moaned, hopeful as Kara pet Lara, who alone still had her eyes glowing.
Suddenly the sunglasses flew from the enchanted circle, Kara's reflexes on point and she caught them, just as there was a flash of light, a scream and a familiar woman stood in the enchanted circle, all dressed in black.
"Ah-hah!" John cried out, happy the spell to grab Reign had worked.
"Who dares…?" Reign began, but her eyes caught Alex and instantly the fire within went out, as her expression behind the mask changed dramatically. "Alex…! Help me…"
"Sam!" Alex moved closer, but John held her back. "We're trying, we–"
But Reign's personality came back as her eyes went red and she blasted heat vision out, Kara jumping forward to get Alex out of the blast, got hit herself but was undamaged.
"I am not contained," Reign now stated, her voice confident as she shot up.
"No!" John shouted, muttering a spell quickly, causing Reign to pause in her attempt to break out, John chanting quickly. All his power seeming to be in containing Reign now and Kara thought for a moment they should have had Raven here as well – maybe AJ, too.
"We're trying to save you!" Alex called as Kara now flew up, at level with Reign to see her trying to break free of the spell; knowing Reign was in control, Kara moved to punch the woman, to force her back to the ground and distract her enough – she didn't know how long it would take John to do his spell to free her, but it would be a fight, it was just a shame Clark couldn't be here also.
"I don't need to be saved!" Reign called, slowly being dragged down by the spell as she hit Kara back, her eyes lighting up. "It's this world that needs cleansing."
"This world is fine. And Samatha Arias is still in there," Kara was the one to say this now, "we are going to free her!"
"She is nothing!" Reign called, now using her laser vision, but downward as she directed it at John. It was too quick for Kara to react as Reign blasted the magic user, but Lara jumped in, dragging him to safety now before he was too badly hurt.
It was enough for Reign though, as she was freed from his spell, using her full might to punch through the ceiling of the room and up through Fort Rozz itself. Kara didn't wait as she took chase, Lara now behind her mistress.
"That did not go to plan!" Alex groaned, moving over to John to check him over – he seemed okay. She quickly moved to pull out her communicator for Barry as she instructed: "Alex to Barry; we have Reign, but she escaped. Need reinforcements."
"We have four," Barry's voice came over coms, knowing the League itself was scattered across the country anyway. "Give us location and we'll be there."
"Fort Rozz," Alex stated.
-SuperEarth-
Flying after Reign, who wasn't vanishing like before, Kara used her laser vision to blast at the so-called Worldkiller, but the other Kryptonian had a lead and had improved even more since her last fight with the Kryptonian. Lara was barking from behind Kara as she, too, chased Reign.
"Samantha Arias! Please stop!" Kara called, hoping against hope that calling to the human within the Kryptonian might work; Reign paused for a fraction of a second – enough that Kara knew it had to work – but she flew further, heading southwards.
"Kara," Barry's voice came over Kara's own coms – and through her head. "I'm on the way with help."
"I think I can reach her, but we need to get her back to Fort Rozz," Kara told Barry back.
"Do what you can," Barry responded to that.
"On it," Kara acknowledged before calling out; "Reign – Samantha – you were made from my parents DNA! We're sisters! You're Supergirl's sister! You are my sister. A member of the House of El." That seemed to do something as Reign now turned on the spot, flying directly at Kara. "Whoa!" Kara dodged her, just in time, as Lara used freeze-breath on Reign to slow her down.
"I have no sister. I need no family. I have the Children of Juru!" Reign called, but she was suddenly hit by a blast of energy as ATOM appeared – unshrinking on appearance – as a flash of light announced the arrival of Barry.
"Be careful," Kara told ATOM, who nodded at her as Reign now changed course, but the Flash appeared next to Kara, seemingly supported by a somewhat familiar puppy.
"Keep my dog safe!" A female voice cried, and Kara looked down to see a redheaded woman below, looking up at the fight as Reign now took on the Flash, whom Houdini threw at Reign, using his speed to punch the woman, sending her back, directly at Ray who blasted her once more.
"Four-against-one, Reign," Kara called, as Lara now blasted Reign with heat vision, while Houdini did the same and ATOM blasted her once more. Reign actually screamed at this.
Barry was in midair, and Kara thought he was literally running on air before she noticed a glow about him, realizing that AJ below might have been using some magic to keep the flash up in the sky with the fight. She didn't question this as, through their bond, they agreed what to do, with the two Kryptonians and ATOM keeping Reign at bay, Kara flew back and Barry ran backward and the second that the three stopped their attack, Barry and Kara flew at Reign, one using a super-punch and the other a Kryptonian punch.
It was enough as they sent Reign flying, crashing in to desert below. AJ instantly summed up a magical barrier, encasing the Kryptonian as Kara landed on the ground, Lara behind her. Barry gave a cry out, the magic supporting him suddenly stopped as AJ was distracted but ATOM grabbed him, getting him down to the ground safely as Lara and Houdini landed next to Kara.
"Got Reign," Kara called into coms, seeing the woman had actually been knocked unconscious by the fight. "Bringing her back to you."
"Thank you," Alex's voice came over coms.
"I'll send her over," AJ stated, and she and the magically-encased Reign vanished in a flash of light.
"Kara…?" Barry began, but Kara already knew what Barry was going to say – that he had told Ray everything. It didn't matter right now, and she didn't really care if Ray saw Fort Rozz; she just needed to get back now.
Without another word, she, Lara, Houdini, ATOM and the Flash sped off in the same direction – ATOM and Houdini a little behind to follow the group to see where they were going and, upon reaching the former prison ship, Ray let out a whistle, impressed. Kara and Barry lead the way in, however.
"Is John alright?" Kara asked Alex but didn't need a response as John was on his feet, chanting something over the unconscious Reign, who AJ still had encased in the magical shell. Looking up at the hole in the Fortress that Reign had made, Kara was impressed to see the little Kryptonian robots, much like Kal-X, already making repairs.
"John's doing the spell to… what's he doing here?" Alex's eyes caught ATOM.
"Of course… Director Danvers is part of this," Ray mused, knowing Alex as she had some say over what happened at STAR Labs, and having interviewed him, along with Harrison Wells over a year ago when getting his job at STAR Labs.
"He helped against Reign. Did a damn fine job, too," Barry was the one to answer Alex, to a smirk from Ray as he patted Ray on the back.
"Does that mean we're letting him into the League?" Alex asked.
"Maybe," Barry stated, Ray's eyes lighting up at this.
"It's not our decision. Kermit still needs to be voted on," Kara said, purposely using the Kermit name making Ray flinch a bit – but before anyone could say anything else, there was a cry out, and all turned to see Reign has regained consciousness and was fighting the magic she was encased in, while John continued chanting.
"What's going on exactly?" Ray asked, deciding to move the topic along. Behind him, Houdini was running around Lara, who seemed thoroughly put off by the other dog. Lara gave a growl, reminding Kara of her dog's father in Karry Universe's Krypto.
"Reign, or Sam… she's being freed…" Kara answered, bemused at the dogs, as Reign began to writhe on the floor.
"You will… not stop… the Cult of Juru…" Reign called, but her voice changed as she writhed, "please… save me Alex…" it was the voice of Sam. "Help me…" but her voice changed again, as John continued to chant, Reign letting out heat vision which didn't penetrate the magical shell, confirming that they definitely should have had AJ there from the beginning. "Juru will endure, they will… return…" but as she spoke, her lit-up eyes flickered and suddenly she let out a breath and collapsed backward.
"John?" AJ asked, not sure how long she could continue the spell keeping Reign at bay, but it seemed it wasn't needed as the mask on Reign's face began to disintegrate, revealing Samantha Arias beneath, breathing deeply, her eyes closed.
"It… worked," John stated, almost in disbelief, Alex moving over quickly to support her boyfriend, who was weakened from both the use of magic and the injury he'd received earlier.
"Sam…" Kara moved forward, crouching down as AJ removed the magical bubble over her. "Sam… can you hear me?"
"Kara…?" Sam was weak, she didn't move as she lay on the floor. "Alex…?"
"She's here," Kara stated, AJ moving back to help John as Alex now moved forward to crouch down beside Sam.
"Was it… a bad dream?" Sam asked, her eyes finally opening as she took in the room, the heroes before her.
"Unfortunately, not," Kara stated. "That persona was locked inside you your whole life, but only magic could release it."
"Oh Sam," Alex put a hand on her friend's forehead.
"But… is she gone?" Sam asked weakly.
"Yes…. I think so," Kara was the one to say this, looking back at John for confirmation.
"The powers are still within you, but Reign is gone," John spoke up at this.
"She has powers?" Kara paused at this revelation but didn't get to ask more as Sam spoke once more.
"Is it true?" Sam asked, looking between Kara and Alex now. "Am I your sister?" She asked Kara, who couldn't help but chuckle at that.
"Yes, you were made via my parents DNA meaning you are my full sister. Little sister… I think. It's complicated…" Kara said, knowing her and Kandar probably had been born first, but due to the Phantom Zone for her, Sam was now older. "Welcome to the House of El, Sama Zor-El, daughter of Alura." Kara mused at the name; Alex chuckled at this
"Sama?" Samantha asked.
"Samantha is not a Kryptonian female name. Too long. Sama is a Kryptonian name. Actually, it was our great-great grandmother's name," Kara explained knowing the names of her family by heart, Sama being Alura's grandmother's name.
"I want to kno..." Sam started but stopped as she groaned.
"She needs a hospital," John spoke up at that. "Come to think of it, so do I…"
"Come on," Kara moved forward, scooping Sam up in her arms, "let's get you guys to hospital." Barry took hold of John, giving his wife a nod. He had made sure Ray and AJ stayed back letting the family reunion play out, but it was time to get both John and Sam to Belle Wells; Harrison younger daughter and the DEO resident doctor.
-SuperEarth-
The next day, Samantha was in an actual hospital, recovering from her ordeal as Reign; she'd been suffering from some psychological after-stresses as well as physical, but overall, she was okay. John himself had second-degree burns on his arm from the attack but was healing well, too. Overall, it was good, although Kara had felt troubled – it had felt all too… easy.
Given Sam had been officially a missing person for the best part of the month, it had been announced publicly that she had been found, and a cover story for defeating Reign had been released, although given Sam's recovery, Lena would still be acting CEO of L-Corp. It looked more likely Lena would take over completely too and Sam was already talking on rejoining L-Corp in a lower rank. She needed some discussions with Lena.
Kara had gone to work for the day, as her maternity was due to end the next week and she needed to prepare for her new role as an Editor for CatCo. She missed the twins, and the girls, but it was a good opportunity for her. Cat had given Kara an encouraging smile and showed Kara her new office when she came in.
Barry, meanwhile, was back at home. There wasn't too much WellsAllen Tech, or the project with Palmer Tech needed immediately and, besides, he had other thoughts running by his head – now that he knew he could handle the Air Totem, he needed to arrange a get-together of all the Totem Bearers: Nora Ford, Caitlin Raymond, Mari McCabe, Ray Palmer, and Mila herself. He wondered if he should do a group text, given he had all their numbers.
"I say just bite the bullet," Caitlin was here, as ever, given she was paid to be their nanny, after all. "I've met Nora, and she seems nice, but I don't really know the others too well, so it would be good to see the other Totem Bearers and get an idea on how all our powers must work together."
"Yeah… yeah, you're right," Barry stated, looking up at Caitlin. "Where are the twins?"
"Lara's looking after them," Caitlin shrugged. "It's a shame Kara couldn't take her dog to work but Lara's good with the babies."
"They're her human puppies," Barry chuckled, but before he could say another word there was a strange gust of wind in the room.
"What's that?!" Caitlin gasped; Barry turned to see what she was looking at and sighed as he noticed the familiar vortex – it wasn't like when the multiverse came visiting, because he instantly knew this was from the Speed Force.
"Oh, that's for me…" Barry sighed. "Keep an eye on things here, I'll be back shortly," he stated, also sending a quick mental message to Kara about what was unfolding as, without another word, he moved through the portal, with it closing behind him.
-SuperEarth-
Inside the portal, Barry found himself in what looked like an empty park, houses in the distance and, on a swing-set was a familiar face, waiting for him. He moved over as he smiled at the older woman on the swings.
"The Speed Force?" Barry asked the woman, just for confirmation.
"Hello, Barry," she wore the face of an older Rae for him. "We're just waiting on one more…"
"One more…?" Barry asked, turning as he saw a speed trail as the younger version of this woman came to a stop in front of him. With her was a familiar dog who went running up to the Speed Force for pets right away. For once, she didn't have her daughter pinned to her, but this was definitely Rae from New Justice with her dog Clarky. Barry was kind of sad he hadn't grabbed Lara now.
"This better not be new Speed Force missions," Rae said instantly, nodding to Barry as she addressed the Speed Force, who chuckled.
"No. Hello Rae," she stated simply. "No, this is more… a warning."
"Warning?" Barry and Rae said together.
"There's a darkness coming to both your worlds, sooner than me or my siblings expected," she stated, and both Rae and Barry paused at this.
"Aunt Sphere warned me about an oncoming darkness…" Rae muttered.
"I've been told of a great evil coming," Barry added.
"SuperEarth?" Rae had to confirm with Barry, who nodded at this. "That's different. It's usually Prime or Karry or both of them I meet in here," Barry raised an eyebrow but then shrugged at the statement.
"The darkness, the evil… they're one and the same, and yet completely different. They are coming for your worlds in different ways," the Speed Force told them. "I can't tell you much more. You need to find out on your own, but I needed to bring you both here, my children, because I wanted you to be prepared. Rae," she turned to the woman first, "you will need to trust in a different kind of darkness. You will need to get the help of my siblings and trust in the black cat. Being a Paragon will be useful, too."
"Black cat….?" Rae seemed perplexed in that. Barry wondered if it was a new superhero that Rae hadn't met yet. "Well, that's cryptic," she pointed out, raising an eyebrow to Barry now.
"I cannot tell you more. To tell you further could interfere in a way that has the oppose effect than what I want. I'm sorry," the Speed Force did look sad at this. "But Barry," she turned to Barry at this, "you know the Totems of Zambezi are to play a crucial part in this, that you will bear the Air Totem, but you need your speed too. You can be in two places at once…"
"What?" Barry frowned at that, unsure what she meant by this.
"A recent visitor to your world, and Kara's new sister will be vital in taking on this evil, too – it helps Kara is a Paragon also," she added of this, Barry frowning as he looked to Rae, but her eyes were wide at this. "SuperEarth and New Justice are two of the most important worlds in the multiverse. You cannot fail," the Speed Force added.
"What…?" Barry asked Rae as their Speed Force mother seemed to back away and play with Clarky, to allow her two children time to talk. Barry knew Rae had an idea for him and Rae was his speedster mentor, the one who had made him feel like the Flash originally. He would take any advice from her he could get.
"You're going to need to be in two places at once!" Rae stated, just as dramatically as the Speed Force; Barry looked at her like she'd grown an extra head. "Don't you get it? Remember when you time travelled to save your Kara?"
"Only too well…" Barry mused, sadly, remembering the time Kara had been killed and Barry went back in time to stop it; he'd run into his past self and stopped the events, at the repercussion of setting Enchantress free at the time.
"Well, it's that, only don't run back to yourself – keep yourself as far away from your past self as possible, because only then can you create an aborted timeline where you both exist. You will make a time remnant. An extra version of yourself. I actually did it once, to surprise my Barry… long story," she stopped at that as the Speed Force gave a chuckle, still listening in.
"Very good, Rae. And know Barry, there will be no punishment for doing this. In fact, I encourage it as I will need help from one of you soon after the events. But that is where I must leave you," the Speed Force stated.
"Wait, that's it?" Barry turned to the Speed Force again.
"One of your more mysteriously quick meetings," Rae shrugged at that, just two portals opened in the park behind the Speed Force: one for Rae and her dog, one for Barry. Clarky was already running through the portal.
"Wait, if there's going to be two of me, how does that work with the Full Kryptonian Bond I have with Kara?" Barry asked both the Speed Force and Rae but didn't get an answer as the Speed Force held out her hand, some sort of pressure pushing Barry back and through the portal and back to his world.
…
Landing back in his living room, Barry was shocked at what had just happened. Caitlin was still in the room and stood quickly at him landing on the floor and the portal closing for him.
"What was that?" Caitlin asked, moving forward to help Barry up.
"The Speed Force," Barry groaned. "Just as cryptic as ever…"
"That was the Speed Force?" Caitlin asked.
"No, it was an entry way to it… I'll explain later, I just need to…" Barry had Kara in his head already and needed to get somewhere quiet to talk to her, so quickly excused himself from Caitlin's presence.
Tell me everything, Kara stated through the bond, Barry sharing what he'd just experienced; seeing Rae again, the Speed Force's warnings and the fact he had to split himself in two to help this oncoming evil. She never answered you about our bond… Kara added after she'd gotten the whole picture, he felt her concerns too.
No, she didn't want to tell me, or couldn't tell me. I'm worried Kara. Will there be two of me in the bond? What happens to the other me? Does the other me know he's a spare or will I be the spare? Barry asked.
It seems Rae might know more if she did this once. She has a minor bond with her Kara as well. Wait, did you mention to her we're cut off from the multiverse? Kara added, Barry pausing at this.
I didn't get the chance, Barry tried.
Seriously?! Kara groaned through the bond.
I was a little busy being told we and New Justice are about to go through hell, Barry protested. I wonder if Rae is cut off too. If this is the same darkness.
We don't know. Speed Force said same villain but different. Sounds like we are facing the same thing but going about it in completely different ways so New Justice could still have their multiverse connection. It's fine Barry. We'll talk more tonight. You have the Totems to concentrate on, Kara responded, chuckling a little through the bond.
I do… Barry had almost forgotten about setting up a group text, and arranging a meeting, with the other Totem Bearers. He had better go talk to Caitlin about this, concentrate on one thing and not the other.
-SuperEarth-
In her office in L-Corp, Lena had the TV on, the news showing that Reign had been defeated and Samantha Arias had been found. She was glad for her new friend, although wondered what this meant for the company – she didn't exactly want her mom's lawsuit reopening and, with the help of colleagues here at L-Corp, she was actually doing really well covering for Sam. She had a mind for business, and she wanted this company more than anything now she'd gotten a taste.
Maybe she should go talk to Sam and see if they could if they could come to some sort of deal where Lena kept hold of the company and Sam came back in a different position. There had been a brief text exchange of similar earlier.
Switching off the TV, Lena turned her attention to the post that was directed to her. She had yet to open it, but it had all been screened and cleared; most were bills and product information and whatnot, but the small box had her intrigued.
Unwrapping it, there was a piece of paper inside, a simple hand-scribbled line reading: 'Please keep this safe for me, Lena – from Alex D.'
"Alex Danvers, of course," Lena smiled as she opened the box and paused. Inside was a small purple gem that instantly entranced her. "Fascinating…" she muttered taking out the gem.
In her head, though, a word seemed to overcome her. A word she'd never known before but suddenly felt familiar…
Eclipso.
Post Chapter Note 1: And there you have it! Straight into the next plot, although it will be a little while before I debut SuperEarth: Eclipso. And yes, this isn't the 'end' as it's more of a pause, as it definitely didn't feel 'season finale-like' but I do hope you all enjoyed. I'm glad I got this done in time too…
Post Chapter Note 2: Before we get to Eclipso, Millie will come back shortly with Beautiful, finishing off Caitlin's Cancer Plot. Then afterward, New Justice and SuperEarth will both return both taking on Eclispo, with New Justice debuting first – but as we teased here, in different ways. And yes, Rae appearance here is from before the finale of New Justice Madness of the League; Millie has subtly added the Speed Force scene above to her final chapter of Madness of the League.
