Chapter 9: Acronyms-Terms-Translations
My military training taught me to provide a reference for acronyms and unfamiliar terms. This is slightly more than that.
I can acknowledge that many of my readers do not speak English as a first language. Even that quite a few of my readers are from other Nations. I get that. Military culture is different enough to civilian culture, even in the US, that there is a cultural gap. I have tried to address this by identifying idioms, slang, military slang, and referencing them here. This way when you see a phrase you don't get... 'cherry pick' or 'par for the course'... You can look it up here to try and figure out what the intent behind the phrase is. This will help you understand my local culture.

Al Dafdae - Arabic. Frog. League name of a fellow trainee. Female. Black. Creche born.
Al Hamsa - Arabic. The whisper. League name of Fasir of the Daghn al Ghul. Male.
Al Hisan - Arabic. The horse. League name of one of their teachers. South American Origin.
Al Khafifa - Arabic. The light. League name for Fasir for the Qarn al Ghul. Female.
Al Qirsh - Arabic. Shark. League name for Fasir for the Shawka al Ghul. Male.
Al Sah-him - Arabic. The arrow. League name of Oliver Queen. Wahy. Male. White. Blonde Hair.
Al Sahalia - Arabic. Lizard. League name of a fellow trainee. Male. Trainee of Scottish origin.
Al Samita - Arabic. Silence. League name of a fellow trainee. Female.
Al Sikiyn - Arabic. The knife. League name of their main teacher. Male.
Alpha-Omega Virus – Fictional. Biological weapon created by a company in Hong Kong. Weapon is two parts. Both are inert when used alone. When combined the Alpha-Omega Virus acts as a biological agent and attacked the respiratory system of the victim. The victim furthers spread of the agent by breathing and coughing. Virus has a rabid onset and death is usually within an hour of exposure. Vaccination is available.
Amazo - Fictional. Ship. Arrowverse creation. It is the name of the cargo ship Ivo uses. In DCU it is a robot that can mimic any superhero power used against it.
ARGUS - Acronym. Fictional. Advanced Research Group United Support. Secret US Government organization meant to track and take down large terrorist organizational threats Name of Director Amanda Waller's covert intelligence agency.
Arrowverse - Fandom. The version of DCU presented in the Arrow (2012).
AU - Acronym. Alternate Universe.
Bola - Weapon. A ranged weapon. Two or three weighted balls on cords.
CEO - Acronym. Corporate Executive Officer. Company leader.
Cherry Pick - Idiom. To choose something very carefully to ensure that the best option is chosen, perhaps through means that provide one an unfair advantage or from a selection that others do not have ready access to.
Chien Na Wei - Chinese. China White. Top assassin for the Triad. High rank.
Comatose - State of being. A type of drug used to send the subject to unconsciousness.
Creche - Location. Place where dependent young children are cared for communally. In the League, all children under 18 years old are kept and educated in the Creche. The Qas are responsible for the children in the Creche.
Daghn - Arabic. Venomous.
Daghn al Ghul - The Demon's Venom. Branch of the League responsible for magic, sensing, poisons, infiltration, stealth, and distractions. It Covers Central and South America. Headquartered in Lima, Peru.
Dam Dhib - Arabic. Wolf blood. League name for Fasir of The Demon's Claw.
DCU - Acronym. DC Universe. Common way for authors to identify when the source material comes from the DC Comics.
Demon's Claw - Makhlah al Ghul. Arabic. Claws of the Demon. Branch of the League responsible for training and martial prowess. Focus on martial training, arms, and martial combat. It Covers Asia, Russia, and India. Headquartered in Chiu Monastery, Tibet with training facilities for new League members at Nanda Parbat.
Demon's Fang - Nab al Ghul. Arabic. Fangs of the Demon. Branch of the League headquartered in Nanda Parbat. Elite hunting branch of the League led by the Heir. This branch takes responsibility for long hunts with various difficulties. Headquartered at Nanda Parbat, Tibet.
Demon's Horn - Qarn al Ghul. Arabic. Horns of the Demon. Branch of the League responsible for infiltration and technology. Focus on developed nations. Covers North America and Europe. Headquartered in Rome, Italy.
Demon's Spine - Shakwa al Ghul. Arabic. Spines of the Demon. Branch of the League responsible for stealth, infiltration, information gathering, and intelligence gathering. Focus on strategic and tactical planning. It Covers Africa, Australia, and Oceania. Headquartered in Christ Church, New Zealand.
Demon's Venom - Daghn al Ghul. Arabic. Venom of the Demon. Branch of the League responsible for magic, sensing, poisons, infiltration, stealth, and distractions. It Covers Central and South America. Headquartered in Lima, Peru.
Dusan al Ghul - Son of Ra's. Albino. Priest in the League.
Eadatan - Arabic. Bite. League name of a fellow trainee. Male. Scottish.
Elixir - Drugs. A sweetened, aromatic solution of alcohol and water containing, or used as, a vehicle for, medicinal substances.
Escrima - Weapon. A type of Philippine fighting stick.
Fasir - Arabic. Horseman. League Rank. Short name for Fasir al Ghul.
Fasir al Ghul - Arabic. Horseman to the Demon. League rank. Each Branch of the League is led by a Faris. This Faris is the highest-ranking League member in that Branch. All decisions are final. They are special advisors to Ra's al Ghul. They report to Ra's al Ghul. They manage their Branch of the League. Each Faris will provide input to Ra's al Ghul about their current problems in their area of the world.
Ghul - Arabic. Beast/Demon.
Glades - Fictional. Location. Poorest district in Starling [Star] City.
Gotham City - Fictional. Location. Large city where Batman is the main vigilante. My AU places Gotham City in the location of Brooklyn, New Jersey. This places it in dark contrast to New York and on the water.
Halberd - Weapon. Pole weapon. One sided blade at the end of a pole.
HIVE - Acronym. Hierarchy for International Vengeance and Extermination. An evil organization founded by Damien Darhk to counter the League of Assassins.
Katana - Weapon. A katana is a Japanese sword characterized by a curved, single-edged blade with a circular or squared guard and long grip to accommodate two hands.
Kendo - Martial Art. Formal Japanese sword fighting. Kendo practice swords are made of bamboo.
Kukri - Weapon. bladed weapon. Rounded. Arm length.
くそう - Kuso - Japanese. Swear word. 'Shit' equivalent swear word.
League - Fictional. Organization. The private name of the ancient order that serves the Source to preserve balance in the world. Short name for League of Assassins.
LoA - Acronym. League of Assassins. Name of the League to the Outside world. (Arrowverse name for League).
Machete - Weapon. Bladed weapon. 22" to 24" length. Thicker at the tip. Used most frequently to chop vegetation in jungle environments.
Makhlah - Arabic. Claw.
Makhlah al Ghul – Arabic. The Demon's Claw. Branch of the League responsible for training and martial prowess. Focus on martial training, arms, and martial combat. It Covers Asia, Russia, and India. Headquartered in Chiu Monastery, Tibet with training facilities for new League members at Nanda Parbat.
Nab – Arabic. Fang.
Nab al Ghul - Arabic. Demon's Fang. Branch of the League headquartered in Nanda Parbat. Elite hunting branch of the League led by the Heir. This branch takes responsibility for long hunts with various difficulties. Headquartered at Nanda Parbat, Tibet.
Nexus - Fictional. Location. Magical and mystical convergence point of ley lines. Location size of the Nexus depends on how many ley lines converge at that location. Two Great Nexus exist. North and South. Major Nexus exists where three or more major ley lines converge. Minor Nexus exists where two ley lines converge or three minor ley lines.
Nyssa al Ghul - Daughter of Ra's. Current Heir of the Demon. Temporary until one is chosen.
Okasan - Japanese. Mom.
Otosan - Japanese. Dad.
Par For The Course - Idiom. Normal, typical, or to be expected (especially when something is a source of annoyance or frustration). An allusion to golf, in which "par" is the number of strokes that it should take a player to get the ball into a particular hole on a golf course.
Paralytic - Drug. A type of drug used to immobilize without the subject losing consciousness.
Pike - Weapon. Pole weapon. Similar to a spear with a stopping arm after the spear head.
Popped (One's) Cherry - Idiom. Losing one's virginity. Alludes to breaking a woman's hymen during sexual intercourse, causing slight bleeding. Expanded to include sex for the first time in that manner.
Qarn - Arabic. Horn, Antler.
Qarn al Ghul – Arabic. The Demon's Horn. Branch of the League responsible for infiltration and technology. Focus on developed nations. Covers North America and Europe. Headquartered in Rome, Italy.
Qas/Qasisa - Arabic. Priest or Priestess. Rank. League. League Rank for all Priests and Priestesses. Outside of normal ranks of Shadow Warriors.
QC - Acronym. Queen's Consolidated. Short for Queen's Consolidated Inc. Acronym for Oliver's family company.
Quarterstaff - Weapon. Staff weapon. 6' to 8' (2 to 2.5 m) in length. Usually 1 to 1.5 (2 to 3 cm) inches in thickness.
Queen Consolidated - Fictional. Business. Queen Consolidated is a family company primarily run by the Queen family. QC for short. Headquartered in Starling City [Star City].
Queen Industrial Inc. - Fictional. Business. The name of the Queen Company when Oliver was younger. Walter helped Robert re-brand the company as Queen Consolidated after the Steel Factory shut down.
Ra's - Arabic. Head. Informal title for Ra's al Ghul. Pronounced 'Rayesh'
Ra's al Ghul - Arabic. Demon's Head. Title and Name of the Leader of the League. Male. Arabic origins.
Ruya - Arabic. Ability. Sight, vision. Identified by the League as a special ability that can only be used by special sentients.
SCPD - Acronym. Starling City Police Department
Shadowspire - Fictional. Criminal Organization. Shadowspire was a US Army Special Forces unit that operated in Afghanistan. Shadowspire consisted of an organization of war profiteers, slave-drivers and criminals. Led by Baron Reiter.
Shakwa - Arabic. Spine/Barb.
Shakwa al Ghul – Arabic. The Demon's Spine. Branch of the League responsible for stealth, infiltration, information gathering, and intelligence gathering. Focus on strategic and tactical planning. It Covers Africa, Australia, and Oceania. Headquartered in Christ Church, New Zealand.
Shan - Slang. Scottish Slang. Unfair.
Soultaker - Fictional. Weapon. A magical katana blade created to be a soul trap for those evil souls killed by the katana. The katana will take the soul of the person slain by the katana. This was to ensure that the souls of the evil ones would never be freed.
Starling [Star] City - Fictional. Location. Large city on the Puget Sound in Washington. I placed it in the rough location of Seattle, WA. I may move it to Tacoma, WA. Either way, major port city on the Sound. Mostly ocean trade and traffic. Gateway to the Pacific.
Tasrukh - Arabic. Scream. League name of one of their teachers.
Tayir Alfiniq - Arabic. Phoenix. League name of a fellow trainee. Male. Egyptian origin.
The Hands – Fictional. DCU. Two powerful begins created by the Source. They are second only to The Source. Responsible for creating the Godwave. Right Hand (Spectre) and Left Hand (Unknown Nun similar to Specter in power).
The League - Fictional. DCU Term. Short for League of Assassins. True name for the League of Assassins in my AU.
The Source - Fictional. Being. DCU. The Source is the reference for the 'God'. The pantheons are below The Source. While they are gods, they are not as powerful as The Source. The League is answerable only to the Source.
停止 - Tíngzhǐ - Chinese. Stop.
三合会 - Triad - Triad. Chinese. The Triad is a Chinese transnational organized crime syndicate. Based in China with outposts in various countries that have significant overseas Chinese populations. The Hong Kong triad is distinct from mainland Chinese criminal organizations. The Triad is one of three major secret societies. Two major types.; Dark force-loosely-organized groups. Black Societies-more-mature criminal organizations. Dark forces are criminal gangs. Dark Societies control local markets and police protection. The organization was led by Zhishan until his death, after which his former apprentice, Chien Na Wei, became the new leader of the Chinese Triad. Headquartered in Hong Kong.
U of SC - Acronym. Location. University of Starling [Star] City.
US - Acronym. United States. Country. Same as USA.
USA - Acronym. United States of America. Country.
Vitura - Fictional. Drug. Arrowverse. This drug places the victim open to suggestion. They are not limited by the morality of the action. They have no memory of their actions while on the drug.
WA - Acronym. Washington. State. Inside USA.
Warith - Arabic. Heir. League Rank designation for Heir.
Warith al Ghul – Arabic. Heir to the Demon. Arabic. League Title for Ra's al Ghul's chosen Heir or eldest blood child.
Yad Alqadar - Arabic. The Hand of Fate. League name of Thomas Merlyn.
Yasrukh - Arabic. Shouting. League name of one of their teachers. Female.
