My phone vibrates across the nightstand.
"Hello?" I'm groggy.
"Edward." Bella's voice is soft.
I jump up, fully alert.
"Yeah?"
"Did I wake you?"
"Nope," I lie.
"I think I'm ready to meet her," she murmurs. "Officially."
"Are you sure?" I smile, hesitant.
"She's growing up without her mother." Her voice shakes. "That's not right."
"Is that the only reason?"
"How did you do it?" She avoids my question.
"What?"
"Take to being a single father so easily."
My stomach clenches. "I wasn't given a choice."
"Then why do I get one?"
"That's different," I answer honestly.
"It shouldn't be."
