Dawn: Washington, D.C.

A male blue jay named Mordecai Peterson is jogging around Washington, D.C., for a morning run around a large pond.

Suddenly, the silence is interrupted by fast footsteps, and Steven Universe, aka Captain Universe, quickly catches up and runs past him as Steven tells Mordecai, "On your left." Mordecai doesn't respond, thinking he won't see him again.

Minutes Later

Mordecai continues to jog, now running on one side of the pond. Steven comes around again, telling him as he passes Mordecai, "On your left."

Mordecai acknowledges, "Uh-huh. On my left. Got it."

Morning: Minutes Later

Mordecai is still jogging, now on the other side of the pond. Steven comes around again from behind him. Hearing Steven's footsteps coming closer, Mordecai exclaims, "Don't say it! Don't you say it!"

Steven passes Mordecai, telling him, "On your left!"

Mordecai exclaims frustratedly, "Come on!" Mordecai gets angry and tries to catch up to Steven, turning the corner of the large pond to find Steven already at the halfway mark, Mordecai panting, "Oh!" He then groans in pain, feeling his muscles that are sore now and after a few seconds he's unable to carry on, he stops to rest.

Park: Few Minutes Later

Mordecai's sitting against a tree, resting and trying to catch his breath as he holds his ribs in pain. Steven's voice asks him, "Need a medic?" Mordecai turns his head to the left and sees Steven walking over to him without a sweat on his body.

Mordecai laughs, "I need a new set of lungs." Steven stops beside him with an amused look and smiles, placing his hands on his hips, "Dude, you just ran, like, 13 miles in 30 minutes."

Steven tells Mordecai, "I guess I got a late start."

Mordecai chuckles and says with a playful seriousness, "Oh, really? You should be ashamed of yourself. You should take another lap." He looks away momentarily before looking back at Steven, saying sarcastically, "Did you just take it? I assumed you just took it."

Steven points at Mordecai's sweater, "What unit you with?"

Mordecai answers without hesitation, "58th Pararescue. But now I'm working down at the VA." Steven nods. Mordecai holds his hand up at Steven, introducing himself, "Mordecai Peterson."

Steven grabs Mordecai's outstretched hand and pulls him up, "Steven Universe."

Mordecai groans as he stands, admitting, "I kind of put that together." He's still out of breath, panting, and after a second, he stands straight, putting his hands on his hips, "Must have freaked you out, coming home after the whole defrosting thing."

Steven sighs. The subject is still weary but tells Mordecai honestly, "It takes some getting used to." Mordecai nods in understanding, "It's good to meet you, Mordecai." Steven turns to leave.

Mordecai stops Steven as he asks knowingly, "It's your bed, right?"

Steven turns to Mordecai as he stops walking, "What's that?"

Mordecai steps closer to Steven as he tells him, "Your bed, it's too soft. When I was over there, I'd sleep on the ground, use rocks for pillows, like a caveman." Steven silently listened, "Now I'm home, lying in my bed, and it's like..." He trails off as he tries to find the words to say.

Steven finishes knowingly, "Lying on a marshmallow." Steven nods as he says, "Feel like I'm gonna sink right to the floor." Mordecai smiles and nods his head. Steven asks him, "How long?"

Mordecai tilts his head quickly, "Two hours." Steven nods in understanding. Mordecai smiles, loosely crossing his arms over his chest, "You must miss the good old days, huh?"

Steven breaths out, smiling as he remembers a few things from back in the day, "Well, things aren't too bad. Food's a lot better. We used to boil everything. No polio is good." He gestures in the air and says, a bit relieved, "Internet, so helpful. I've been reading that a lot, trying to catch up."

Mordecai looks up as he tells Steven, "Marvin Gaye, 1972, Trouble Man soundtrack." He looks at Steven, who nods and puts his hand in his pocket, "Everything you've missed jammed into one album."

Steven takes out his small notebook and pen and glances at Mordecai, "I'll put it on the list." Steven writes down what Mordecai just said on his list, which also includes I Love Lucy (Television), Moon Landing, Berlin Wall (Up + Down), Steve Jobs (Apple), Disco, Thai Food, Star Wars/Trek [with Star Wars crossed out, showing that he has seen it], Nirvana (Band), Rocky (Rocky II?). Steven's cell phone suddenly vibrates, showing that he got a text message. He takes it out and reads the message 'MISSION ALERT. EXTRACTION IMMINENT. MEET AT THE CURB. :)'. After he reads the message, Steven tells Mordecai, "Alright, Mordecai, duty calls. Thanks for the run." He shakes hands with Mordecai and jokes, "If that's what you wanna call running."

Mordecai raises his eyebrows amused, "Oh, that's how it is?"

Steven repeats jokingly, "Oh, that's how it is."

Mordecai laughs, "Okay." Steven turns to leave, and Mordecai stops him by suggesting, "Any time you wanna stop by the VA, make me look awesome in front of the girl at the front desk. Just let me know."

Steven nods as he walks backwards towards the curb, "I'll keep it in mind."

Mordecai smiles in amusement, "Okay."

Just then, a black Porsche pulls up by the curb, stops, and rolls down the window, revealing Mabel Pines, aka Iron Woman. She calls out with playful seriousness, "Hey, fellas. Either one of you knows where the Smithsonian is? I'm here to pick up a fossil."

Steven tells Mabel humorously as he walks over to her car, "That's hilarious." Mabel lets out a playful chuckle as Steven gets in the car while Mordecai slowly walks closer. He kneels down to get a better look at Mabel and her car.

Mordecai's eyes widen when he sees Mabel Pines, calms down, smiles, and nods at Mabel, "How you doing?"

Mabel smiles politely at Mordecai, "Hey."

Steven looks at Mordecai after getting comfortable in Mabel's car, "Can't run anywhere."

Mordecai smiles as he agrees, "No, you can't." Mabel gives Mordecai one last smile as Steven looks forward while the window rolls up. Mordecai watches as Mabel quickly pulls away from the curb and speeds off.

Inside: Mabel's Car

Mabel stares out the windshield as she drives. She asks Steven in a teasing tone, drowning out, "So..." Steven looks at her, "Did you make a new friend?"

Steven lets out a small chuckle as he remembers his encounter with Mordecai, "Yeah, you could say that." Mabel glances at Steven with a smile. Steven asks her concernedly, "How are you feeling?"

Mabel's smile slowly disappears, looking around as she changes lanes before answering, "I'm feeling fine."

Steven asks Mabel, concerned, "Any nightmares last night?"

Mabel shakes her head "No."

Steven tells Mabel as he looks at her worriedly, "I'm really concerned about you, Mabel." Mabel looks at him, not saying anything. Steven continues, "You sure you're up for this?" He's talking about the mission.

Mabel tells Steven gently, "It's been a year and a half since what happened in Florida." Steven looks at her. Mabel shrugs, "I'm okay, Steven." As she continues to drive, Mabel admits, "It's been a rough few years, but I'm slowly getting over it. You know I'm not the type of person who stays in bed depressed all day." Steven listens intently, concerned about Mabel, who's been helping him adjust to the modern world since they first met. Mabel tells Steven, "I'm the type of person who stays busy, who focuses on things like missions, the United States Air Force, fixing things, building things, helping out in the mission-"

Steven cuts in knowingly, "Helping me."

Mabel smiles, nodding and saying softly, "Yeah, and helping you."

Steven looks at Mabel fondly, "Thank you, for helping me."

Mabel gives Steven a playful look, "You've thanked me many times, Steven."

Steven tells Mabel honestly, "I'm forever grateful, Mabel. What can I say? I'll be lost without you."

Mabel smiles as her heart flutters at Steven's words, "You're welcome." Steven nods, and Mabel tells him lowly, "Thank you for being concerned for me. I appreciate it." Steven nods, and Mabel assures him, "I am getting better. The nightmares are becoming less and less."

Steven offers a small smile, "Good." Mabel focuses back on the road while Steven looks out the window.

Captain Universe: The Diamond Soldiers

{Author's Note: The last bit was a bit of a filler as I wanted to show the truth about how Mabel is taking everything seriously since her life changed drastically in Iron Dipper till now. Also to show how much Steven is appreciative to Mabel as she was the one to help him adjust to the new world ever since they met in Iron Dipper 3 while she hides secret feelings for him. I know this note was a bit long but I wanted to let that out.}
