Same Day: Mall
Inside: MAC Store
In the MAC store, one of the agents looks around the crowded store, looking for Steven, Mabel, Marcy, and Pacifica, as they were just there. The agent named Bismuth quietly reports in her earpiece, "Negative at the source."
Hallway / Escalator
Jasper walks into the crowd with her right hand to her ear while her left hand holds the collar of her jacket open for her mic, demanding, "Give me a floor rundown."
Male SHIELD agent 1 walks by the third-floor railing, finger to his earpiece as he reports in his radio, "Negative on three."
Female SHIELD agent 3 is walking by the railing on the second floor. She holds her wrist up to her mouth and reports on her radio, "Negative on two."
Jasper walks in the crowd with her right hand to her ear while her left hand holds the collar of her jacket open for her mic, demanding, "Snake the upper levels. Work down to me." She puts her hands down as she gets up on an escalator.
Marcy, Pacifica, Mabel, and Steven are going down the escalator. Pacifica spots Jasper on the escalator next to them going up. She turns around to Mabel and Steven. Pacifica tells Steven, gesturing to Mabel with her eyes, "Kiss her."
Steven and Mabel look at Pacifica funny as they both say lowly, "What?" Marcy turns to face them.
Pacifica quickly tells Steven and Mabel, "Public displays of affection make people very uncomfortable."
Steven tells Pacifica honestly, "Yes, they do." Mabel spots Jasper on the escalator beside them, panics, and spins around. She pulls Steven's head down, puts her right hand on the back of his neck, and kisses him. Steven's left hand automatically grips Mabel's waist as he kisses back.
Marcy quickly pulls Pacifica into a kiss, making Jasper glance at them before looking away as she goes past them on the escalator. Marcy pulls away from Pacifica as Mabel pulls away from Steven, breathless. Steven and Mabel share a silent, stunned look.
Marcy asks Steven as she leads the three down the escalator, "You still uncomfortable?"
Steven recovers from being stunned, looking away from Mabel as she turns around and follows Pacifica. He answers Marcy as he follows them, "It's not exactly the word I would use."
Outside: Road
After being undetected by the SHIELD agents at the mall, Steven, Mabel, Marcy, and Pacifica find a vehicle to head to the location, which Mabel found on the SHIELD flash drive.
A big truck carrying a few other cars drives past a sign saying 'Welcome to NEW JERSEY, The Garden State' as a normal-sized blue truck drives past the sign to New Jersey.
Inside: Blue Truck
Steven is driving the truck. Mabel is chilling in the passenger seat with her feet crossed on the dashboard. Pacifica is sitting behind Steven with her right foot on the seat, resting her arm on her bent knee, looking out the window. Marcy is sitting behind Mabel with her back against the door, curled into a ball, fiddling with her cast as she leans her head back to the window.
Mabel is in a comfortable position, looking at Steven. She asks curiously, "Where did Captain Universe learn how to steal a car?"
Steven shifts to get comfortable in his seat as he answers, "Nazi Germany."
Mabel looks away, smirking, "Mm."
Steven looks at Mabel's feet and tells her, "And we're borrowing. Take your feet off the dash." He looks back to the road.
Mabel smirks at Steven as she takes her feet off the dashboard. She takes a moment before telling him, "All right, I have a question for you, which you do not have to answer." She babbles as she realizes the question she's about to ask, "I feel like, if you don't answer it though, you're kind of answering it, you know."
Steven cuts Mabel off, "What?"
Mabel blurts out, "Was that your first kiss since 1945?"
Steven tilts his head slightly as he looks out the window, "That bad, huh?"
Mabel says defensively as she looks at Steven wide-eyed, "I didn't say that."
Steven nods as he tells Mabel gently, "Well, it kind of sounds like that's what you're saying."
Mabel is still defensive and bashfully says, "No, I didn't. I just wondered how much practice you had."
Steven tells Mabel in disbelief, "You don't need practice." In the backseat, Marcy and Pacifica look at each other and share an amused smirk/smile as they listen to Steven and Mabel's bickering.
Mabel argues lightly with Steven, "Everybody needs practice."
Steven tells Mabel, concluding the argument, "It was not my first kiss since 1945. I'm 95, I'm not dead."
Pacifica speaks up, asking Steven, "Nobody special, though?"
Steven chuckles and glances at his rear-view mirror to see Pacifica, "Believe it or not, it's kind of hard to find someone with shared life experience."
Marcy shrugs as she says to Steven, "Well, that's alright. You just make something up."
Steven raises his eyebrow and glances back at Marcy as he questions, "What, like you?"
Marcy tells Steven as she looks at him, "I don't know. The truth is a matter of circumstances. It's not all things to all people, all the time. Neither am I." Pacifica glazes forward, thinking as she listens to them.
Steven tells Marcy softly, looking at her, "That's a tough way to live." Mabel looks down, fiddling with her watch as she listens.
Marcy stares off and answers dryly, "It's a good way not to die, though."
Steven tells Marcy honestly, looking back at the road, "You know, it's kind of hard to trust someone when you don't know who that someone really is." Mabel and Pacifica stay silent, letting Steven and Marcy have a moment.
Marcy looks at Steven, thoughtfully pondering his words, "Yeah." She looks away momentarily before looking back at Steven and asking him, "Who do you want me to be?"
Steven looks at Marcy hopefully, "How about a friend?"
Marcy laughs quietly and softly, smirks, and tells Steven, "Well, there's a chance you might be in the wrong business, Steven." Steven looks at her with a slight smile.
Hours Later: Evening
Outside: Abandoned Military Base
Steven pulls up to an abandoned military base, which the flash drive signaled them to. He stops and parks in front of the gate. Everyone gets out of the truck, shutting the doors. Mabel holds up her Pines phone, glancing at it and around the area. Pacifica and Marcy look around.
Steven tells them, holding his shield, as they walk towards the fence gate, "This is it."
Mabel says, putting her phone in her back pocket, "The file came from these coordinates."
Steven mutters sentimentally, "So did I." He's looking at the sign that says, 'CAMP LEHIGH, U.S ARMY RESTRICTED AREA'.
Suddenly, Mabel's Iron Woman suit drops down behind them, and the other three quickly turn towards it, alarmed. Mabel looks at them, unfazed, "Easy, guys. It's just my backup."
Pacifica tells Mabel, annoyed as she turns around, "I thought we're your backup."
Mabel tells Pacifica as Marcy and Steven relax, "You are. It's just extra backup." Pacifica looks at her unamused while Steven and Marcy chuckle quietly in amusement.
Night: Later
Later that night, as they walk around the base trying to pinpoint where the signal came from, Steven tells them, "This camp is where I was trained."
Mabel holds her Pines phone up, also wearing her headset. Curiously, with Pacifica following her, she asks Steven, "Change much?" The Iron Woman suit stands near them, looking around.
Steven answers, looking up at the flagpole in front of him as Marcy stops behind him, "A little."
Steven has a brief vision of his former smaller self running past him as he's getting trained with other soldiers. 1940s Drill Sergeant shouts, "Pick up the pace, ladies!" A group of soldier trainees run past Steven, "Let's go! Let's go! Double time!" The sergeant stops and shouts behind him, "Come on, Steven, move it!" Steven's former self is running behind to catch up with the others. He stops and stares at present Steven, panting. The Drill Sergeant shouts, "Come on, fall in! Steven! I said fall in!" Present Steven watches nostalgically as the former Steven runs off.
Pacifica interrupts Steven's sentimental flashback moment as she holds up Mabel's Pines phone. She says dryly, "This is a dead end. Zero heat signatures, zero waves, not even radio. Whoever wrote the file must have used a router to throw people off." Steven turns around and notices a building ahead of them.
Marcy asks Steven, noticing his expression, "What is it?"
A minute later, they walk over to a building. Steven explains to them, "Army regulations forbid storing munitions within 500 yards from the barracks. This building is in the wrong place." They stop in front of the door. The three women stay back as Steven breaks the lock with his shield.
Inside: Building
They enter the building, going down the stairs, entering a dark room. Mabel walks over to the wall and finds a light switch. She flips it on. The whole place lights up, revealing it to be an old SHIELD office.
Marcy sees a big SHIELD symbol on the far wall, stating, "This is SHIELD."
Steven guesses as they all start to slowly walk forward, looking away at the old office desks, "Maybe where it started."
Inside: File Room
Steven opens a door, and they enter the room. They walk forward and find old framed portraits of Stanford Pines, Sadie Miller, Jenny Carter, and Col. Bill Dewey.
Mabel looks at her grandfather's portrait sadly, whispering emotionally, "Grandpa?"
Pacifica looks at Mabel, puzzled, "Your grandfather?" Mabel doesn't look at her as she nods in response.
Steven gently grabs Mabel's hand and squeezes it comfortably, "Stanford."
Marcy looks at Steven, "Who's the girls?" Steven doesn't answer as he looks at Sadie's and Jenny's portraits. He turns away, not letting go of Mabel's hand, taking her with him to walk further down the room.
Pacifica and Marcy share a confused look before looking back at the portraits. Then, they follow the other two, with Mabel's suit following.
Steven stops by a massive empty bookshelf and sees that wind is coming through the little opening between two shelves. Looking around it, confused, he starts, "If you already working in a secret office,-" He lets go of Mabel's hand and pushes the bookshelf. It has wheels rolling to the right. Mabel's Iron Woman suit helps him, grabbing the side and sliding the bookshelf open to reveal an elevator behind it, "-why do you need to hide the elevator?"
Mabel holds up her Pines phone to the keypad at the side of the elevator. It scans the numbers, revealing a code. After it analyzes the pad, saying '8539', Mabel presses the code to the keypad. The elevator bell rings green, and the doors open.
Basement
They all go down the elevator. The doors open to a dark room. They cautiously walk out, looking around the dark room. As they reach the center of the room, the lights automatically turn on, revealing that the room is filled with old-looking computers. They step up to the middle platform, where the main computer system is. Steven looks around, confused at the old technology.
