.
The hostess I first came across;
A lady on my way
I saw, surprised, there my young son;
With her he was at play.
So cheered I was by sight of him
At last I was at ease
And soon I left with growth returned
To field and crop and trees
.
Then next I came in my disguise
To Celeus the king
Where I was hosted by his maids
And taken under wing
In glad return I did agree
To tend to his young sons
But fire rite was thwarted by
his queen, mistaken one
.
Yet to the elder I did go
To teach him craft of seed
And sowing fields and reaping sheaves
And taming of the weeds
.
So that young man went forth from there
To teach all that he knew
Thus by my gift may all mankind
Grow food in plenty, too
.
Then in the fields of Samothrace
Did beauty catch my eye
Then lie in love I did with he
Beneath the open sky
.
To that young farmer I then bore
The next two sons of mine
The one a god of giving wealth
And one of tilling tines
.
