Pairing: RED Engineer x BLU Spy.
Rating: T (suitable for teens, 13 years and older).
Warning: This chapter contains implications of war and killing.
Summary: The engineer was feeling a little down because of the failure of that day's battle. The spy decided to comfort his partner at his place (Spy is horrible at feelings, but so is Engineer).
"BLU wins." Said the Administrator through the speakers. The engineer stopped whacking his sentry at the voice, his arms falling stiffly at his sides as he picked up the toolbox and ran back to his teammates.
Engineer turned his head to see the BLU team on the other side, chatting and laughing and otherwise proud of their victory. It wasn't completely flawless, but it was the first they had won in a while. Spy stood among them, smoking a cigarette.
Engineer felt a pang in his chest seeing Spy with his team, something that happens a little too often nowadays. He hurriedly followed his teammates as they walked back to the base.
"Did you see that? I bashed his head in so hard he couldn't even get back up!" The BLU scout exclaimed beside his teammates as they walked. His cheerful smile faded as he looked at the Spy. He didn't look very pleased.
The scout didn't know how to phrase his question to the spy, or to any of his teammates, so he shut his mouth, walking in silence with the others.
There was no debriefing after their almost flawless success; everyone just decided to laze around in the base. Spy sat in his smoking room, staring blankly at the wall, a cigarette dangled from his mouth. Though he was pleased that they actually won, he couldn't help but feel upset towards his lover on the other team.
Spy frowned at the thought of feeling vulnerable. Yes, before being involved in the Gravel War, he had many relationships, both with men and women. But those relationships were short-lived. Spy never felt much about his previous lovers, and never seemed to care that much about their feelings either.
Well, that was how it was. After beginning a relationship with Engineer, Spy felt as if he would get killed by God if he were offensive towards Engineer. It wasn't a comprehensible feeling to Spy, and he was deeply confused as to why he felt the way he did.
Guided by his feelings, the Spy cloaked and slipped into the RED base's garage, where the Engineer was idly working on a blueprint. His face was relaxed, his mind seemed to be wandering elsewhere as he didn't notice the Spy uncloaking beside him.
"Mon chéri," Spy said in a low voice, careful not to alarm the engineer or his teammates.
At the sudden noise or voice, Engineer nearly jumped out of his stool and fell backwards. So much for trying not to alarm anyone. Dell immediately regained his composure when he realized who it was beside him.
He looked up from the pinstripe suit and to the face of a familiar masked man. "What're you doing here?" Dell asked, as if skeptical he might backstab him like in today's battle. Spy did apologize for it though, by giving him a kiss on the forehead and mumbling an apology as he was dying.
"I came to give a proper apology for today's failure." Spy said, motioning around in the air to emphasize that he didn't just come to mock him about it.
Engineer nodded and dragged over a seat for him. Spy sat down, but not before dusting and making sure it was covered in oil. They sat in silence for a moment, the only noises present were the chattering of the rest of the RED and the soft humming of the working engines in the garage.
"So, you want to apologize. For what? Completely annihilating my team?" Engineer said in a joking manner, but the way he phrased it made Spy look a bit guilty.
"If you phrase it that way, then oui." Spy said, a bit of guilt slipping into his sentence when he tried so hard not to let it.
Dell dropped his playful smirk and reached out to hold his partner. "Hey, I-I didn't mean it like that. I was just teasing you." Dell said, scooting closer so he was in hugging range.
Spy looked up at him, his face saying the words he wanted to tell Dell without having to verbally say it. They sat there like that for a moment. Dell occasionally tightened his grip on Spy's shoulder like a comforting massage, while Spy rested his hand on Dell's thigh.
Spy didn't like the waves of emotions crashing into him at that moment. Love, guilt, apathy, and such alike. They were all being mixed and blended into one weird-tasting smoothie. All Spy knew was that he felt genuinely sorry for the man before him.
When he and Dell started as friends, he knew how much of a hard-working man Dell is, much like his own Engineer. But in that hard-working personality of his, he spared space for his own personality, one that would only be revealed around close friends, family, and his spouse.
Spy was honoured in a way to be his spouse, to be able to witness him with such a laid back attitude compared to the rage he saw on the battlefield everytime he sapped his sentry or sent a teammate to Respawn. God, he hates feelings.
Spy was unaware that Engineer moved his hand from his shoulder to caressing the nook of his neck. Spy subconsciously leaned into the warm touch, his eyes fluttered as if struggling to stay open.
The silence was interrupted by someone stopping abruptly at the garage. The BLU soldier stood still with his mouth straight as a line. The couple sat there staring at him for a moment, and he stared back under his helmet without saying a word. No exchange whatsoever was made for about 2 minutes.
"You came to see Demo?" Engineer asked, but it sounded more like a statement. BLU Soldier nodded with a hum, stepping into the garage and opening the door to the base, disappearing behind it with a click.
"Well, that was awkward," Dell chuckled as he leaned in closer to Spy, their foreheads inches away from each other. Spy smiled in return as well, moving in to close the space between them to give his lover a peck on the lips.
They stayed that way, occasionally moving in closer to fully embrace each other, enjoying each other's company. Spy was vulnerable when he showed his true feelings, while Engineer didn't know how to express his at all. But despite that, they were well on their way to perfecting each other.
AN: Sorry for not posting in like 2 weeks. It's just that I'm new to fanfiction writing and not very used to being active. Anyways, thank you for being patient and enjoying this new chapter.
I think it's a little corny. I didn't mean to write it like that, but that's okay.
