Hello S19 fans!

This is a fic that has been partially in my head for a while now, I am unsure the full body of it, but am excited to see where it is going. It occurs during season 6, after Maya has begun to heal and repair her relationship with Carina. This is a Marina-centric fic.

This first chapter dances between Friday and Saturday, hopefully you can follow relatively well!

Current rating is M for violence, implied sexual assault, and general dark themes (at times!).

I hope you enjoy.

SATURDAY.

It took several vehicles going past before one's headlights reflected properly off the stitching on her running vest. It took several more vehicles going past for the driver to notice. Many were too occupied with navigating the windy road in the heavy rain to notice her. It was a dangerous road, there were frequent accidents of head-on collisions, and cars sliding off into the ravine. Slumped over the verge, half obscured by heavy bush, unusually pale skin covered in dirt, both from the rain bouncing up off the gravelly soil, and partially from the forest behind her. When the driver did run over to her, she was in a daze, loosely conscious, bleeding from a wound near the base of her head. An aid car was quickly called.

Vic was bored. Desk duty was boring, and she felt restless. Truthfully sometimes she enjoyed desk duty, to have an 'easier' shift, but not today. Today she wanted to do something. She had seen the weather report showing the rain was turning into a heavy storm, which meant they were going to get busy. Whilst she wasn't exactly jealous of the team out there getting wet, stinky, and filthy, she was still a bit jealous they got to leave the station.

Things had been weird recently. It felt like A shift was never together anymore. Sullivan was always moody and leaving as soon as shift was over, Maya was on leave, Warren felt on edge and was trying to spend more time with his family, especially with Pru.

Pru.

That child meant so much to Vic. Looking across the reception to the glass display box, making eye contact with Miller. Maybe that was why she didn't like desk duty.

Reminded of a CrisisOne report that hadn't been scanned to digital, which had to be emailed to head office for funding by tonight, she got up, noticing the rain had started. It was already dark outside. She could hear the hot water cylinder start up, smirking to herself she thought, 'A bit preemptive given you're about to get soaked out there.'

Dispatch seemed to agree as the alarm blared out.

'STATION 19, AID CAR REQUESTED TO GORGE VALLEY ROAD.'

Frantic steps rang out down the stairs as Andy and Warren appeared, they both gave Vic a nod as they bolted out the garage, lights and sirens fading into the night.

"First of many," Vic mumbled to herself, aware this would be a long night.

FRIDAY.

Carina was excited, she had been looking forward to tonight all shift. It made the final delivery she had easier when she glanced at the clock once she deemed the mother and baby healthy and saw she would have time to go and shower, and get ready without being late. She took an Uber to her apartment just to be sure.

She mused on the short drive that it might not be too many more times before she would be Ubering to Maya's place again. She didn't know when, but felt that her time in the apartment by herself was coming to an end.

Lying on her bed for 10 minutes Carina scrolled social media to decompress. Enjoying being able to just sit for a moment. It was rare she got off shift in good time and wanted to actively appreciate it. She saw her cousin had given birth, noting the baby had inherited her Nonno's big ears. Hopefully they would grow into proportion as the child aged.

Putting on some gentle music Carina slipped into the shower, she knew the hospital was technically sterile, but always felt somewhat dirty, even after an uneventful shift. Pondering what to wear she opted for some casual black pants, some black leather boots, and a deep red top, with a light grey jacket. They weren't going anywhere fancy, but she always liked dressing slightly better than she needed to.

Checking the time she locked her door and headed downstairs. It was a 10 minute walk to Joe's, and the evening was warm, it was forecasted to rain later, so Carina wanted to enjoy it while she could.

The bell dinged at the door, "Dr DeLuca, another date night?" Helm asked, drying a wine glass.

"Yes, I'm a few minutes early," Carina replied, scanning the room just in case Maya had bet her.

"Want a wine while you wait? Maya hasn't arrived yet," She replied, used to watching people arriving for dates. The obvious nerves and excitement. She found it sweet that it was evident on what was technically a married couple. Helm didn't know much about what had happened between them, but had assumed they had just had a big fight about something.

"Ah no, I will wait, grazie," Carina smiled and settled into one of the tables just around the corner from the door. She tapped her finger on her phone, checking in case Maya had messaged her.

Nothing.

The clock hit 6pm.

It was weird for Maya to be late.

Maya loved trail running. She didn't get to do it as often as she would've liked, given shift work, Seattle's unpredictable weather, and the ease of the block or treadmill. But if the weather was nice on her days off she would often go out, enjoying being in nature and challenging herself on the terrain. The sense of accomplishment of logging miles and climbing ridge lines was something the treadmill had nothing on. Today she loaded up her running vest, 1.5L of water, some energy gels, a sandwich, her rain jacket, a small first aid kit, and a PLB. She tightened her laces and headed out the door, hoping to complete an 18 mile route up a canyon to a water reservoir and back. In time for one of her date nights with Carina.

She made it to the trail head easily, and got going. Enjoying this route as it started following a water catchment in the dappled sun, and was nice and easy to start, meaning she was well warmed up for when the climbing began after 4 miles. She noted there was a couple of utes parked at the trail head, obviously hunters. She wondered if there would be any deer on the trail this time.

SATURDAY.

Andy had driven this road many times. But it always made her slightly nervous in bad conditions. It was very windy, with the odd pothole, a weak barrier between the verge and the gorge itself, no streetlights, and limited reception. She had seen it go wrong here, and always took her time, especially driving the more cumbersome aid car.

"You alright?" Warren asked. He had done less calls out here, and was surprised at the carefulness of Andy's driving.

Glancing down at the dash she replied, "This road is dodgy, the council always say they'll repair it or make it safer, but they never do."

"Maybe that's something we can ask Montgomery to do when he's mayor," Warren grinned back. They both smirked, it was a weird thing to say, and a weirder thing to believe.

They hadn't been given exact whereabouts of their victim, but saw the flashing hazard lights of the vehicle who had found them from around the corner, they pulled in behind the vehicle.

"Lieutenant Sullivan and firefighter Warren, what do you know?" Andy asked while Warren grabbed gear from the back.

"Yeah hi, I saw her when I came round the corner. I only noticed her because of the reflective vest," The woman replied. She seemed cold, the heavy rain had probably gotten through her thin jacket.

"Has she spoken to you at all?"

"No, she groaned when I gave her a nudge. I-I put a blanket over her, I didn't know what else to do," She seemed apologetic and nervous. Like it was a test.

Warren was with them now, "Thank you, that would've made a real difference. Let me get your contact details and then you can get on your way."

The process took minutes before they were alone, illuminated by the headlights of the aid car.

They quickly moved to their victim, seeing her partially covered by a thick, woollen blanket with a stripped pattern on it.

"Andy is that?"

"Maya!."

FRIDAY.

"Are you sure I can't get you something while you're waiting?" Helm asked for a final time. It was nearly 7pm, and Carina had almost finished the jug of water she had bought over at 6:30.

"Ah no thank you, I am sure Maya has been caught up in a call. I will get going," Carina gave a fake smile and stood. Maya wasn't on shift today.

She made it to the door when she saw the rain had started. She paused, questioning to call an Uber to her apartment, Maya's apartment or the station. She felt frustrated, they had been rebuilding her trust in Maya's commitment to their relationship, and this felt hurtful to be forgotten.

Carina returned to her apartment and got changed into some sweat pants, and a S19 hoodie. She hadn't told Maya, but it helped her to sleep, wearing something that smelt like her. Like the good her, the Maya she so desperately wanted to be with. Scrolling her phone she commented that her cousin's baby was very cute and debated calling Maya.

Annoyed she turned her phone onto silent and went to bed.

So that's it for the introductory chapter! I have a few ideas where to take this and hope that the two timelines weren't too challenging to follow.

If you have any suggestions or feedback please flick me a review.

Other than that, hopefully you've enjoyed it, next chapter coming soon!
