CHAPTER TWO
IT'S HERO TIME!
THE ALIEN MANTA RAY flew through the night like it was no big deal. There were no planes, no airships, none of the like in the sky. It was dark, quiet, and peaceful. When he looked down below, it was the same thing. Not a thing. No roads, at least none that were paved by the way, no buildings, at least none from where he could see. Normally, when it came to a situation like this, he would get attacked, forcing the young hero to fight back, but at the moment, none. Absolutely nothing.
He looked around for anyone, or at least a campsite for him to rest up, or at the very least get some answers. Paradox barely gave any, but to his defense, he did stated to the young hero that this universe was somehow hidden and tucked away for some odd reason. This led the Changeling to ponder. What had happened to this world? A world war? Disease? A zombie apocalypse?
"Not that I mind the quiet treatment," Jetray said, still cruising in the sky, "But normally, I would have at least seen someone...or at least something. Hell, there's no animals roaming around in these wilderness. Not even a cow or a chicken."
Then he started to recount the areas he flew pass. Farms with no farmers or animals, towns with no people, homes with no residents. The hell was going on here?
"I gotta get to the bottom of this," Jetray said, "It's not like I have a choice in the matter. My ship is currently under self-repair so it is gonna take awhile before it is full condition to at least operate alright. Besides, based on the environment, I don't think these people, whoever they are, are at least Level 1 in the tech scale at least."
Then, just up ahead of the red alien creature stood another wall, but this time, light was shining just behind the megastructure. The city behind the large wall had to be a large capital city in the least. Finally, a place where he could rest and catch a place. Jetray was fast, but the distance between the old ruins to this part of the country was exhausting. He needed sleep.
The walls were no larger than the Statue of Liberty and no wider than an entire nation of Madagascar. It was grand and massive, making the Great Wall of China look more like the fences bordering the Rio Grande.
"Now that's a big wall," Jetray said, "I better not attract that much attention to the locals. Seeing a giant manta ray circling the sky may not be a good idea." Then, an idea popped up in his head. Jetray was good for speed, but now that he has reached semblance of civilization, it would be wise for him to not draw a lot of attention to himself, knowing how this world, based off of a hunch, wouldn't take kind to monsters. Especially monsters they have not seen before, and Ben did not want no part of running from a lynch mob.
"I'm gonna try to be a little sneaky," Jetray said, pressing the badge on his chest, enveloping himself in a flash of emerald green light. When the light died down, a blue mothman creature stood in the place of where Jetray once stood.
"BIG CHILL!" Big Chill said with a raspy, haunting voice. "Two in a row; must be a good omen!"
Big Chill wasted no time. He turned intangible as he flew right into the city undetected. As he predicted prior, there were soldiers guarding the walls. It was a good call for him to change before he could get in.
Big Chill scoured the place, trying to get himself familiar with the area. There were no skyscrapers or any other towers of the sort. The city was big, like really big! The people lived okay. Not that much poverty here and there, yeah there was some troublesome areas but thats normal. So far, nothing out of the ordinary for the young scout.
Something was off about this town the more Big Chill scanned it. The city was...well it was rough, but it wasn't bad. The police, from what they were, they wore a short, light brown jacket with the badge of what looked like a green unicorn on both shoulders, on the front left pocket and on the centre of the back, a light-colored shirt, a dark brown sash around the waist covering the hips, white pants, and dark brown knee-high leather boots.
The city-state was more like a fascist police state than anything else. Something to which would shake the young hero the wrong way. He had always have no issue with the police. Hell, he was a Deputized Plumber for God sake, part of a larger organization that protects extraterrestrial species from all across the galaxy. The very thought of the Plumbers stomping on his Earth's government for the sake of planetary security would be terrifying.
"No crime. No suffering, well to some degree, yep...this is an authoritarian walled city, but one that is keeping the people safe, but from what?" Big Chill asked. "Hm, maybe I should ask some of the locals here; no that's stupid. What to do? It's not like the answer's not gonna pop up all of a sudden. Well, it's not worth worrying about it tonight. I gotta find somewhere to land."
Big Chill looked around for a place to land. An area, devoid of a human presence, a place just secluded enough that no one would ever think twice to go.
He flew to a quiet spot, it wasn't anything suspicious like a dark alley or anything, but there was just some light. When Big Chill landed, he folded up his wings and pressed the Ultimatrix core on his chest, enveloping him in a bright green flash. When the light faded stood the 17-year-old hero wearing his green jacket with the number 10 on the side, a black shirt tucked in with blue jeans and sneakers. Ben Tennyson looked around for anyone who might have seen him, probably might have been the first thing he checked before transforming back.
So far, and by his lucky stars, nobody. The light was bright enough to make the green flash noticeable. There was no commotion, so that was a plus. There was some energy left on the Ultimatrix, so he didn't waste that much energy on transforming, so that was a plus.
"No commotion, and no crazy people around. That's good," Ben said. "Now where's an inn? And how am I supposed to..." Then, he felt something in his pocket: a stack of cash paper money from this universe aided with a note stapled to the wad.
"Whoa?" Ben said, speechless. "Now, that's a bank roll." He turned to the note, "What's this?"
He took the note and unfolded it. On it was a handwritten note, written in cursive addressed from the time traveling man himself.
"Hello Benjamin!" it started, "By the time you transformed back from Big Chill I managed to teleport a stack of money from the coffers of their capital to your pocket. This is enough to cover for a night or two, but after that you may need to earn your worth while the plane is in self-repair. However, I must warn you, Ben, based off the latest information, I will implore you to do whatever you need to do to stay alive – even if it means getting your hands dirty sometimes. Oh, and just a little note, your answers will be told in the next few minutes or so. Toodle-loo! – Paradox," Ben finished.
"Thanks for the cash and the strange ominous warning," Ben said. He put the cash in his pocket and walked out of the alley. Once out, he turned around and saw a series of stairs traveling up. He took a deep breath and walked up the stairs until he saw a building that looked more like a bar or an inn. The architecture looked a little strange, but it was familiar enough for him to determine that this could be an inn/bar. Ben didn't really drink, but at least they would have some food for the hero, right?
"At least here I can get myself something to eat," Ben said.
He entered the building, no one really batting an eye to him. He could have just checked to see if there was a sign if this place was reserved for some elite, and these people were far from it, at least to him. They were all dressed like it was the Middle Ages. The food from what he looked at looked more or less, not as desirable, but edible. He couldn't complain about it, nor shouldn't. He knew that there couldn't be a Smoothie place in a city as primitive as this. He had to swallow his pride at least, or at least try to mask his taste.
He took a good look around, nothing too fancy, nothing too out of the ordinary. The lobby was anything but spectacular. The environment looked more like a Western Inn. Maybe it was a western inn from the Old Frontier days.
Ben opened his pockets and discovered some cash on him, it was a wad of it: the paper money was unfamiliar to hi. The design was different. It wasn't green like in his home nation with the familiar leaders of the olden times. Nor was it colorful like the notes from the Perfidious Albion. The money he held was brown with a woman in the middle. It looked more like the Japanese yen, but with a strange, unrecognizable font. It wasn't in Japanese, nor was it in any language. At all. Whatever kind of nation this was, he wasn't gonna question it. He turned to the bookkeeper in front of him, a young man who just looked like he was just about done with the world, reading a small, red book, not even facing the young teen hero in the eye.
Ben pressed the bell on the table to get his attention. The employee took a quick glance, closed his book, closed his eyes and turned around. He glanced at the boy, again, indifferent.
"Is this for the night?" he asked.
"Yep," Ben answered, "How much?"
…
"Just about everyone seem to be very quiet. Did something here or did I miss the party?" Ben thought. He opened the door he was assigned to for the night. He unlocked the door and pushed it open, only to see a plain bedroom. Clean hardwood floors, a made bed that pressed against the wall, a wooden table with no alarm clock, clean white cotton curtains blocking the lights and a desk.
"Well, looks roomy. The town looks pretty quiet, although it does give off a little bit of a police state. As much as I don't like it, I think I may need to lay low," Ben commented as he closed the door. He plopped on the bed and partially buried himself in the covers. There wasn't anything spectacular in this space, maybe this is what he needed. Out of all the adventures he had, he just didn't remember, aside from when he was 10, that he could truly relax. His mind started to drift away as his vision started to blur, "I wonder what could be waiting for me," he yawned. He drifted to sleep, awaiting for whatever adventures that had in store for the green teen hero.
…
THUD. THUD. THUD. Ben was still in deep sleep, unbothered by the soft thundering noise from the far distance.
THUD. THUD. THUD. THUD. The cries of fear. Glass shattering. Ben's eyes started wallow. Then he heard, "YOU'RE GONNA PAY FOR KILLING MY FRIEND!" assisted with a fast whoosh that shattered the window. Ben woke up, alarmed, he got off from his bed, rolled to the floor, his Ultimatrix already activated with his hands hovering above it, programmed to select XLR8. Ben paused as he looked around. Nothing. He got up from the ground and faced the window.
"What the hell is going on out there? First there was peace and quiet and now..." Ben opened his curtains to the window. When he did,m he was introduced was nothing short but terrifying. A young woman was slammed to the wall right across from Ben, apparently after being pulled from what looked to be metallic threads linked to metal hooks. The young woman with light, fair skin. She had a slender figure and was of average height. In addition, the young lady had gray eyes and thick black hair that extended past her shoulders. Her hair was parted in the middle and tied in loose pigtails with light-blue hair ties. She was knocked unconscious.
"Oh no," Ben said, about to open the window, only to find a terrifying site. Locked to his eye site was a strange, humanoid creature, just peeping at the unconscious woman. It looked angry. This creature had a disproportionately big head and shoulder-length, messy, brown hair with brown eyes. Its body was relatively toned, and it always had an angered expression on its face. Ben had no idea what that thing was, but he knew he had to do something; the giant approached the woman like how an opportunistic anthropomorphized cat was to a crafty mouse.
"I don't know what you are, giant," Ben said opening the window pane, "But I hope you like a friend of mine!" Ben said with a cocky grin, his Ultimatrix programming to giant dinosaur creature.
