Chapter Three
Jandy is stuck in my head right now. Just to be clear though, friendship, not relationship in this story. If you want Jandy relationship it's in 'Not Now'. Andy has a dream/nightmare about Jack and wakes up calling his name.
"She flatlined on the way here." Everyone looked at Maya. "We got her back just before we arrived. They rushed her to the OR as soon as we unloaded her." Maya told them and watched as Vic leaned into Travis and a couple of tears fell. She watched as Theo and Robert slumped in their chairs. Worry clear on their faces.
Everyone was sitting in silence. No one knew what to say. Their captain was fighting for her life, and they had no control over what was happening. They hated it. They just wanted, no, needed, Andrea Herrera to be okay.
It was two hours later when Teddy Altman and Miranda Bailey came to the waiting room, and everyone stood up.
Knowing that questions would come rapidly, Miranda raised her hand, stopping questions from being asked. "She's going to be okay. Her burns were bad, but none needed skin grafts. Her neck was severely burned, she had burns treated on her back and arms and she had one on her leg too. The ones on her face were also treated." Miranda told them and they stayed silent, almost expecting more.
"Andy also has a sprained wrist and had some pulmonary treatments done," Teddy told them.
"There's something else, isn't there?" Ben asked, able to read his wife's expression.
"We had to put her on a vent. The amount of smoke inhalation was what worried us the most. We induced her into a medical coma." Miranda told them.
"Is she going to be okay?" Maya asked, eyes tearing up.
"As Bailey said, she should be. She needs to be monitored closely." Teddy told her, a soft smile on her face. "We have Andy settled in a room and while it's normally not allowed, you're all welcome to go see her," Teddy told them, and Maya was up on her feet. "Room 315, Bishop," Teddy told her and watched her run off, the rest of the team following behind.
When Maya got to Andy's room she looked through the window and saw her best friend covered with bandages and her eyes filled with tears. Maya felt a hand on her shoulder and knew it was Carina's right away.
"You ready to go in?" Carina asked and Maya nodded. Carina grasped Maya's hand and walked into the room. There was the hum of the vent and the constant beeping from the heart monitor but what stood out most were the bandages all over her arms, face and neck and she knew there was one on her leg and her back too.
"She's gonna be in so much pain," Maya said to herself and then looked around the room and saw everyone looking at her. "Oh, shit. I said that out loud." Maya blushed and looked down.
"Yes. Yes, you did." Jack said, coming into the room with Robert. "How's she doing?"
"Not good," Ben said. "She had burns debrided in the OR and a lot of pulmonary treatments. Think she was also dehydrated and had severe smoke inhalation." Ben told him and Jack looked down at Andy worriedly.
"Is she going to be okay?" Jack asked, worry clear in his eyes.
"Right now, she's on a vent because they're most concerned about the smoke inhalation," Carina told him. "Her other injuries will heal. We don't know how long she'll need to be on a vent." Carina explained.
Jack nodded and looked at Andy. He couldn't imagine his life without Andy. She was his family, and he couldn't lose anyone else after Dean.
Maya saw Jack's expression and walked over to him and pulled him out of the room.
"Jack, she's going to be okay." Maya watched Jack nod but watched the tears form in his eyes. "Jack, I get what you're feeling right now. I do, I really do, but I promise you." Maya tries to catch Jack's eyes. "I promise you I will be there for you. I won't leave you to handle this alone, okay?" Jack nods and impulsively pulls Maya into a hug.
They let go of each other after a few seconds and walked back into the room. Carina wrapped an arm around Maya as they stood, leaning against a small dresser in the room when Maya watched Andy's brow furrow. She knew what that meant. "Everyone out," Maya said. "Guys, I'm not kidding. Get out." Before anyone was able to move Andy whimpered and everyone turned to look at the bed.
"Jack," Andy called out and everyone looked at Jack. "Gibson stay with me," Jack looked at Maya.
"Everyone out," Maya repeated and this time everyone left. Everyone except Jack and Carina. Maya raised an eyebrow at Jack.
"No, I'm staying. She'll wake up from this nightmare, freak out and wonder where I am unless I'm here."
"When do I ever listen to you?" Jack and Maya turn back to the bed and Jack smirks, remembering her words from the Highrise fire and her staying back to save him.
"Andy," Maya tried to shake her awake.
"Jack, please," Maya and Jack's smiles dropped while Carina was sitting back, watching this unfold. "Jack, stay with me." Andy pleaded. Andy's head moved, the nightmare becoming more intense. Carina moved closer to the bed, worried about how Andy would be feeling when she woke up from this.
Maya shook Andy again and this time Andy shot up. "Jack!" And shouted and gasped in pain.
"Hey. Hey. I'm right here, Andy." Jack grabbed Andy's hand. "I'm right here," Jack said and watched as Andy turned her head. He watched the tears form. "Hey, it's okay. I'm okay. I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere." Andy let a tear slip down her cheek. Jack smiled sadly at Andy before pulling her into a hug. As soon as he did Andy let go and sobbed. He could imagine that she had been holding onto these tears since he was in the hospital.
Jack rubbed her back gently, cautious of how she was burned.
Andy pulled back and went to wipe her tears away when she saw the wrap around one of her hands. Andy frowned and looked at Maya. "What the hell happened to me?" Andy asked, panic on her face.
"We were under our fire shelters and none of us know how, but you ended up 20 feet away from where the rest of us were," Maya told her and watched Andy frown again. "What? What is it?"
Andy took a deep breath, leaned back against the bed and let out another whimper. "How much of my body is burned?" Andy asked, looking down. She didn't want to make eye contact with either. She could feel the bandages around her neck, face and arm and could only imagine what the rest of her body looked like.
"You have some really bad burns on your left leg, you can see that your right arm had a lot, and the only other place is some on your back," Carina told Andy.
Andy nodded but was still looking down.
It was silent between the four for a minute before Andy spoke. "Maya, Jack, do you mind if I talk to Carina alone for a couple of minutes?" Andy asked, briefly looking up.
"Not at all. We're going to get something to drink and then we'll be back." Maya told her and pulled Jack out of the room when he didn't make a move to leave. When the door closed Carina moved closer to the bed.
"What is it, Andy?" Carina asked, going to Andy's left side after grabbing a chair, sitting down and reaching to hold Andy's unburned hand.
"Will the scars go away?" Andy asked and Carina frowned.
"Andy, it'll take time," Carina told her, rubbing her thumb over the top of Andy's hand. "Look, the burns are bad right now, they'll hurt, and you'll wish them away hundreds of times but at the end of the day they will just show everyone that you are strong and brave and that you survived a fire tornado." Carina finished, trying to make Andy smile and she did a little dance in her head when Andy did.
Andy looked at Carina briefly before looking down again. "What about the ones on my face?" Before Carina could answer a voice sounded from the door.
"Like Carina said, They show your strength, your bravery, and that you survived something where the odds were stacked against you." Andy and Carina turned to look at the door and saw Meredith. "Sorry for interrupting but I heard what happened and I wanted to check in."
Carina watched Andy's face light up at seeing Meredith and excused herself, leaving the pair alone to talk.
