Skye spent most of the night tossing and turning. At three am she finally gave up and got up. She threw on sweatpants and an oversized hoodie before going and sitting in her favorite place. It had been a while since she had been out there, and she wanted nothing more than to go get weed. But instead, she took out her phone and texted Bucky.
"Hey, I'm outside where I like to go to think. I need to talk to someone before I do something stupid."
When Bucky's phone went off it woke both him and Steve up. Bucky looked at his phone and told Steve he could go back to sleep before he got up. He threw on the first T-shirt he could find in the dark and went to find Skye outside.
"What's wrong?" he asked the girl as he sat down with her.
"I'm overwhelmed with everything that has happened in the last few days, I can't sleep, and I have a certain urge. I remembered what you said the first time you caught me with weed and decided it was a better option to ask you to come talk to me instead," Skye said.
Bucky smiled. "It was a much better choice. And I'm proud of you for it."
Skye smiled a little.
"So, what exactly has got you so overwhelmed?" Bucky asked.
"Whatever Loki's end game is. Because if it's to drive me mad, it's working," Skye said.
"You can not let him get under your skin," Bucky said. "I know it's easier said than done. But you just have to ignore him."
"I can't ignore it when he is getting everyone else to think I have some medical issue I'm not telling anyone about," Skye said.
"If it helps, I believe you," Bucky said.
"It does," Skye said. "But not everyone else does."
"Tell you what, if anyone gives you trouble I've got your back," Bucky said.
Skye nodded.
"But it's not helping you get out of your head," Bucky said.
Skye shook her head.
"What will? Other than illegal things," Bucky asked.
"I don't know," Skye said.
Bucky took a breath and thought maybe distracting her with a different topic could help. "Can you keep a secret?"
Skye looked up at him. "I've been known to keep a secret or two."
"I got a ring for your dad," Bucky said.
Skye's eyes grew big, and she smiled. "When are you going to ask him? Where? Tell me the plans!" she said excitedly.
Bucky chuckled. "Next weekend, the diner near where I saved his butt the first time when we were kids."
Skye giggled. "Sounds like the right place."
"I agree. But you can't tell anyone," Bucky said.
"Of course. That's not the kind of surprise I'd want to ruin," Skye said.
"Good," Bucky said.
"So, do I start calling you dad now too?" Skye asked with a smirk.
Bucky laughed and shook his head "Smart ass."
Skye chuckled.
"Feeling better?" Bucky asked.
"Yes," Skye said with a smile.
"Ready to head back to bed,? Because you need sleep," Bucky said.
"Yeah," Skye said as she got up.
"If you need me again you can text me or come get me," Bucky said as he got up too.
"Okay. Thank you. Night, Bucky," Skye said before she went back inside and to her room.
Bucky went back inside and to his room as well, where Steve was awake, waiting for him to come back.
"I told you that you could go back to sleep," Bucky said softly as he got back into the bed.
"You get a text in the middle of the night and leave the bedroom. You're lucky I didn't get up and follow you," Steve said with a smile.
Bucky chuckled.
"Everything is okay?" Steve asked.
"Skye was feeling very overwhelmed, and she wanted to do something she knew she shouldn't. But she texted me instead," Bucky said.
"She texted you instead of attempting to sneak out and get marijuana?" Steve asked.
"Yes," Bucky said. "She remembered the first time I caught her with it and how she could talk to me instead of using it."
Steve smiled and let out a breath of relief.
"Relieved?" Bucky asked.
"I think this is the first time she talked to someone instead of getting marijuana," Steve said.
"You might be right," Bucky said.
Steve kissed Bucky. "Thank you."
"For?" Bucky asked
"Being someone my daughter can trust," Steve said.
"Like I've said before, I know you and Skye come as a package now. And it's easy when she is a good kid," Bucky said.
Steve nodded. "Buck, take the appreciation, regardless of the reasoning."
Bucky smiled and kissed him. "You're welcome."
Steve smiled and the two closed their eyes and went back to sleep.
