Hello and welcome to chapter 3 of Hazbin Potluck! Today, we'll see what Sir. Pentious comes up with for the potluck. This recipe is from The Victorian Way, a youtube channel that shows how recipes were made back during Queen Victoria's time. I personally enjoy watching it because i think that we can learn about history through food. I do not own this recipe or the Hazbin crew. They belong to Vivzepop! Enjoy!

Chapter 3: Sir Pentious Devonshire Squab Pie

"A 'potluck'? Why not just say dinner party or something sssimple?" Sir Pentious said to egg boi number 3. "I don't know boss. But it does sound fun! Almost as fun as you shooting us with your ray gun!" egg boi 3 replied back. "Well no matter, this potluck dish will be the besssst out of all the other dishes here!" Sir Pentious announced to the other eggs. "Now, what to make? What to make? Charlie said that it must be from when we were alive, so what can I make?" Sir Pentious said to himself as he slithered down the hall to his room. "Oh! Oh! Maybe there's something in one of the cookbooks!" Frank said jumping up and down. "Ah yesss, dear Mother's cookbook! That was a good idea my little egg. Now, where is it?" Sir Pentious asked the egg. "Its in the trunk!" Frank replied. "Which trunk?" "The one on the ship ." "Well, go get it!" Pentious ordered the little egg.

While waiting for the egg's return, Sir Pentious sat in his bed which looked more like a snake nest, thinking about what recipe he could use. "Which one would be good? It must be something that hasn't been done before. A lot of mother's recipes haven't been made, so which one?" Pentious mumbled to himself. "I'm back boss! Here you go!" Frank announced. "Thankyou my little egg. Now, go help the princessssss. This is something that I want to look at alone." Pentious told his eggs. "Ok boss!" a chorus of eggs replied and left him alone.

Opening the old book, Pentious was taken back to a time when families lived simpler times. "Pen! It's time to come in for afternoon tea!" a faint voice called out from the depts of his memory. "Coming Mama! Let me put these tools away first!" A young Pentious called back out from a shed. "Mother always had the best recipes for teatime treats. But Charlie said that she was doing the dessert, so it can't be one of these." Pen said looking at a recipe for teacakes. He kept flipping through the book, taking a moment to look at each page, wondering if this recipe or that recipe would work. "Not this" he would mutter as he flipped a page. "Not this one either. Why is thisss so hard?" Pen asked no one. He flipped to the next page and stopped on it.

"A ha! The perfect recipe! Thisssss will work great!" Sir Pentious said to himself looking down at the worn page. "Mother's Devonshire Squab Pie. This was always my favorite. Hmm, what all is needed for it." Pen moved over to his desk and took out some paper and a pen to rewrite the recipe. "I will not have Mother's recipe book in the kitchen the day of the cooking so that ssspider can steal it." Pen said to himself getting comfortable, "Alright Mother, what do we need for the pie?"

He noted that he needed one onion, two apples, twelve mutton cutlets, butter, 2 ounces of stock (preferably meat), puff pastry, and salt and pepper for taste. "Hmm, I'll have to go to the butcher for the mutton cutlets. Hopefully there's one that Alastor hasn't eaten yet." Pen said to himself as he wrote down the next steps. He never told anyone, but he had always enjoyed cooking. He remembered how he would help his mother in the kitchen preparing the meals. It was during that time that he was able to talk about his latest mechanical creations and how it's success would boost them up into a better life. "I don't need a better life when I have you here my dear boy." His mother would say as they prepared the squab pie. "But mother! If we boosted up our station, you could hire a real cook! You can become a proper lady like you should be. You don't deserve this life." Pen would reply. "I would much rather you be able to go to university. You are smarter than you give yourself credit for."

He wrote down that he needed to have the oven turned to 200 degrees Celsius and to slice the onion as finely as possible. Then he needed to core and peel the apples before slicing them as well. Then, he needed to melt some fat in a pan over a high heat and fry the mutton until golden brown. "Here mother, let me fry the mutton." Pen said as he took over frying the mutton. "Thankyou dear. Now tell me about this new machine that you are building." Looking down, Pen reread what he had written so far. "Ok, now we layer everything in a buttered pie dish and season with salt and pepper as we go."

"Now don't forget to add the stock dear. And use salt paste to cover instead of paper." Pen's mother said, watching carefully as Pen added the stock and salt paste to pie dish. "Mother, is it really starting to become hard to purchase paper?" Pen asked after putting the pie in the heated oven for 90 minutes. "Why do you ask dear?" "Mother, I overheard the landlord telling you that if you don't pay last month's rent soon, then he is evicting us." Pen said, looking serious. "Do not worry about it dear, just focus on your studies. If father were still here, then I wouldn't need to worry." "Well, he isn't, so stop with all this questioning!" His mother snapped, looking angry and upset. "I'm sorry mother." Pen said, looking down.

"She never did say what had happened to father." Sir Pentious said to himself as he wrote down the next step. "After the pie has been braised, take it out and remove the salt paste. Then replace it with a puff pastry and cut an air hole to ventilate steam and decorate it in case of guests. Then paint egg wash and return to oven to brown and puff up the crust." Pen looked down at the now recopied recipe and looked back to the recipe book. "Mother, I hope that you and father are together in heaven. I'm sorry for not being there with you." He whispered as he closed the book softly.

While Sir Pentious was copying the recipe, the eggs were helping Charlie. Or at least doing their idea of helping. "Thanks for helping eggs. I'm sure Pentious is done by now." Charlie said to the eggs, hoping to get them out of her office. "Sure, thing boss. See you later boss lady! Bye Bye!" the eggs said, leaving Charlie alone finally. "Frank, quick question. What century did Sir Pentious live in?" Charlie asked the little egg before it could walk out the door. "Uhh, he would always go on about a big exhibition that some prince held. Said that it inspired him to become an inventor." Frank replied looking confused. "Exhibition? Oh, you mean the Great Exhibition. Great! Thanks." Charlie said shooing the egg out and shutting the door. "Now that's two desserts down. I can't believe this is working!"

Well, who would've thought that Sir. Pentious had more humble beginnings huh? I know he seems like a bit of a momma's boy, but back then it was normal. To me, this gives some insight to how Sir. Pentious got into building his machines. If you enjoyed, feel free to leave a review and I will see you next week. Until then!
