Chapter 1: The invitation

Juliana receives a call from Jacq and is invited to a special field trip.

Note from me: Hi Everyone! I'm finally back with a new Pokémon Fanfiction! Slight spoilers ahead! Sorry...

This fanfiction is the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet DLC, Teal Mask, but in my version, the main character (I play Juliana) and Kieran are the ones to meet Ogerpon and become allies against the Loyal Three. This one took me a long time to write (Late May to now midway July). Inspiration for this fanfiction came from three people. They are author alottalotta and their fanfiction story "Second outcome" on Archive of our own; YouTuber Oceanic (More details in "Second Outcome") who came up with the idea of the main character telling Kieran about their encounter with the ogre; and YouTuber Tempertenchi who inspired me for one of my chapters, keep an eye out for that. I have finished the entire story and will be posting a set of chapters each day. This Teal Mask AU will take place before the "The Way Home" story line in the games.

Happy reading!

Disclaimer: I don't own Nintendo

It was a sunny day in the Paldea region. Juliana went on an outdoor picnic just for fun. Juliana released her Pokémon (Meowscarada; Dachsbun, Espeon, Lucario, Lycanroc (Midday form), Gabite, Koraidon) and let them play while she prepared the sandwiches. Once that's done, it was time to eat. The Pokémon enjoyed their food, making Juliana smile. Just then...

Ro-to-to-to-to!

Juliana's Rotom-phone rang. It flew up and Juliana answered the call. It was the biology teacher, Jacq, on her phone screen. "Hello Hello, Juliana!"

"Hi Mr. Jacq!" Juliana answered cheerfully.

"Sorry to bother you while you're probably out hunting for some nice treasure…" He apologized sheepishly.

"Actually, I'm out on a picnic right now!"

Oh very cool! So Juliana, we have a school trip every year around this time." Jacq informed her.

"Oh really?" Juliana was intrigued.

"Yep! It's a special collaboration between our academy and another school. And would you believe it Juliana? Your name was one of the ones chosen to attend!"

"Oh wow!" Juliana exclaimed with excitement. "Where to?"

"You'll get to go study and experience the great outdoors off to the east–in the land of Kitakami! It's a long trip to get there though. We can't send too many students this time. You're a lucky one, getting selected as one of the participants!"

"I bet it'll be worth it though!" Juliana said with optimism.

"When you're done with your picnic, come to the school entrance. You'll get the details there. Keep in mind, you don't have to take part. But this kind of chance isn't likely to come again, so you really should give it a shot if you're interested! Hope to see you soon!"

"Sure thing! Bye!" The phone call ended between the student and teacher.

After finishing up lunch, Juliana returned her Pokémon and called a flying taxi back to Naranja Academy. She got off and entered through the entrance door.

"Excuse me, young lady?" a voice called. "Over here!"

Juliana got called over by a woman standing before her. She had short blonde hair, a purple jacket over her dark purple turtleneck and red pants. "Hello."

"You're one of the students chosen for the school trip, aren't you?"

"Yes. My name is Juliana." Juliana introduced herself.

"Well, aren't you full of fire. Absolutely dazzling!" The woman complimented. "I even heard you were gifted with a tera orb!"

"It's true!" Juliana confirmed.

The woman gasped as she realized, "Oh my! I haven't even introduced myself! My apologies! Call me–"

"Ms. Briar! I'm so sorry I'm late!" Jacq burst through the hall and up to the woman now known as Briar and his student a little out of breath.

"Hi Mr. Jacq!" Juliana greeted.

"Hello to you too, Juliana!" Jacq greeted back enthusiastically. "What a lucky scamp you are, getting to take part in a school trip! I'm so happy for you! I wish I could go too…"

Briar cleared her throat, getting his attention.

"Huh? Oh, I'm sorry, Ms. Briar," Jacq apologized and rubbed the back of his neck. "I got a bit carried away…"

"No worries!" Briar didn't let the interruption bother her. "As Mr. Jacq so kindly stated for me, my name is Briar. I'm a teacher at Blueberry Academy."

"Blueberry Academy?" Juliana curiously asked.

"It's a school all the way in the Unova region," Jacq explained, "Ms. Briar helps set the curriculum there."

"And this year is Blueberry Academy's turn to run our joint school trip and supervise the students. That's why I came here to collect you and the other students that were chosen," Briar added, "We'll be heading to a place called Kitakami."

"Mr. Jacq told me," Said Juliana, "Do you know what it's like?"

"It's a land known for its picturesque fields and rice paddies. The place has a rustic feel, but there's also something rather mysterious about it."

"Mysterious how?"

"Good question. You see, the same energy present in Paldea's Terastal phenomenon has been detected there!"

Juliana gasped in surprise. "Terastal energy? In Kitakami? Wow! I thought Paldea was the only region known for the Terastal phenomenon."

"I'm hoping to do some digging into the matter myself—in between my supervising duties," Briar turned to Jacq, "Though I'd also appreciate the chance to take a good look around the Great Crater of Paldea…"

"Ah yes, well…" Jacq looked at Briar apologetically. "There's…not much I can do about that without permission from the Pokémon league and Director Clavell." He mentioned, as only researchers are permitted to go there.

"Oh I know," Briar stated, "I already put in all the proper applications. I trust that I'll get a favorable response soon?"

Jacq placed his hand on his chin. "Ah…well…hmm…" His train of thought was interrupted by Juliana's presence. "Oh! Sorry, Juliana! Forgot all about you for a moment there! Anyway, the school trip. Think of it as a chance to continue your Treasure Hunt on a grander scale—to search BEYOND Paldea's borders!"

"Treasure hunt beyond Paldea…" Juliana talked to herself.

"I'll even provide you with a special update to your Pokedex app. If you'd get out your phone?" Juliana pulled out her phone and let Jacq update her Pokedex to include Pokémon that can be found in Kitakami. "And there we go! All done! Now you can go wild registering all the Pokémon you find around Kitakami too!"

A thought came into Juliana's head. "Wait, what about my mom? Does she need to give me written permission or…"

"Oh, don't worry—I already cleared things with your mom!" Jacq assured her, "You just go and have fun! Toodle-loo!" He walked back to his classroom and waved bye to his student.

"Haha! Your Mr. Jacq is quite charming, isn't he?" Briar noted, "Delightfully direct when he wants to be," she faced Juliana next, "Now Juliana, it's quite a trip to the land of Kitakami. I hope you don't mind flying. Or long bus rides. Let me know as soon as you're ready to set out, won't you?"

"Oh, I already made my decision. I'm set to go!" Juliana said with confidence.

Briar smiled. "Excellent! We'll set out together as a group once the other students arrive. By the way, are you familiar with the Scarlet book?"

"Yes, I am."

"As you should. It was the most influential book of the century on the subject of the paranormal. The author of the Scarlet Book, Heath, was in fact an ancestor of mine."

"Really?!" Juliana was shocked to find out, "The author is your ancestor."

Briar nodded. "Indeed. I even have his original manuscript." She pulled out her own Scarlet Book with her ancestor's writing. "Have a look at this—these are the pages that were blacked out and made illegible in the published version of the book." The book pages mentioned that Heath and a research team got separated in the Great Crater and encountered a strange entity. They couldn't tell if it was a Pokémon or not, but it had a shell with a hexagonal pattern and Heath described it to be brighter than a gemstone. As such, Heath called it the Indigo Disk. "The Pokémon depicted on these pages is called Terapagos. It was a mysterious Pokémon that Heath allegedly encountered when he delved even further into the depths of Area Zero…not that the general public believed him. It's my dream to find Terapagos and prove that Heath's records were all true."

"That's why you want to go to Area Zero?" Juliana asked.

"Yes, though…" Briar sighed, "I haven't yet been able to secure permission to enter, unfortunately…" She quickly shook off her sadness and smiled, "But that's fine! It'll all be fine. All I need to do now is focus on the work that's in front of me."

Juliana went to the school store real quick for healing items and poke balls and went back to the entrance hall and met up with Briar and three other students. Two of them were a boy and girl, Marcus and Carlota. They're about Juliana's age and the third, Josh, was much younger than the rest. "Ms. Briar! We're ready to go!" said one of the boys.

"Looks like the gang's all here," said Briar. "All right, everyone! To the land of Kitakami!"

"Alright! Let's go!" The students cheered.

Note: I've chosen Sprigatito for my starter Pokémon, so I gave Juliana the final evolved form, Meowscarada. The Pokémon listed in the first paragraph and below in the note are my main team when I played Pokemon Scarlet. I also had gave the three NPCs who accompanied Juliana names.

Juliana's Pokémon on hand: Meowscarada (F), Dachsbun (F), Lycanroc (F), Espeon (F), Gabite (F), Lucario (M)

Juliana's ride Pokémon: Koraidon

F is female and M is male.

On to Chapter 2 where Juliana arrives in Kitakami!
