Teknomorphs 5:

No Longer Alone

Saber walked through the forest. Officially, he was on a scouting mission to find his brother, Slade; the errant half-transformed Teknoman that had somehow managed to escape from Darkon's underground base. Unofficially, Saber wanted to spend some time in his family's former cabin.

As he walked through the woods, Saber began to recognize some of the landmarks. He was getting closer. Saber broke into a loping run, dodging around the many trees that were in his way. Once he was in sight of the cabin, Saber slowed down. There's someone in there, but I hope it's not the someone I'm looking for.

Saber sighed, slowing again to a walk. Gunnar had been looking at him in the strangest ways when they were both together, and even more strangely when he had requested this assignment. Saber knew that, as Darkon's Guide, Gunnar was practically required to report any suspicious behavior to him. Especially that on the part of his soldiers.

Saber knew that he would have to be more careful around Gunnar from now on, to keep the other Teknoman from finding out what was on his mind. But, there were some good points about being Darkon's First Lieutenant: it gave him a lot more leeway than a normal Teknoman would have.

Standing at the door of his family's old cabin, Saber paused. The house looked exactly the same as it had when he and his family had left it. That, of course, was another lifetime. One before he had ever heard of Darkon or the Radam, the one where he had just been Cain Carter. Saber missed those days, but he knew that he could never go back.

Feeling along the edge of the door, Saber found the slight ridge that concealed the spare housekeys that his father had gotten in case one or more of the family had accidentally locked themselves out of the house. Immediately, Saber noticed that one of the keys was missing. Since the only people who knew where either of the keys were had been trapped by the Radam, Saber had to guess that Slade had been here sometime earlier.

That would make sense, I guess, Saber thought morosely. Still, I hope it's not him I'm sensing inside. Taking a deep breath, Saber opened the door to his former home. It was the same inside as it always had been, yet different. It wasn't anything physical, nothing that Saber could have ever defined to a person that might ask, but the house just seemed... sadder without the family that had inhabited it.
