Me: Have any of you read The Electric Tale of Pikachu? I've taken a bit of inspiration from there for this chapter.
Misty: The Flame Pokémon-athon!
The Pokegang are back in the Safari Zone, hoping to have better luck today than they did yesterday...so far they haven't
"Can we go back already?" Alex moans, "We haven't seen a Pokemon in like three hours."
"Now that you point it out that's really strange." Brock says, "I mean we've been walking for a good while and they all just disappeared at some point."
"Maybe they're avoiding us?" Misty suggests
"We're not going back until I catch something." Ash says determined
"You have 30 Tauros and a Dratini egg! What more do you need?" Misty asks annoyed
"If I want to become a Pokemon Master then I need to catch more Pokemon." Ash says, "That's what Gary's doing and he's way ahead of me."
"Ash I swear to Mew if you start imitating Gary I will murder you." Alex says
"Ditto." Misty agrees
"Where?" Brock asks
"No Brock I didn't-"
Pikachu!
Pikachu points ahead of them. A stampede of Tauros run past
"Is there nothing but Tauros in this place!" Ash yells
"Hey you may not like it but I'm glad." Alex pulls out a Safari Ball. He starts approaching the Tauros, "Just need one good shot and-"
Something suddenly leaps out of the forest and slams on Alex
"Owww!"
"Oh cool it's a Growlithe!" Ash yells and pulls out his Pokedex
Growlithe the Puppy Pokemon. A Fire type. Very protective of its territory. It will bark and bite to repel intruders from its space. Growlithe evolves into Arcanine through use of a Fire Stone. This Growlithe is Male
"Help me." Alex groans
Ash pulls out a Safari Ball, "Don't worry Alex. I've got you."
He tosses the Safari Ball at Growlithe. It hits the Puppy but doesn't do anything
"What?" Ash asks confused
A Ponyta suddenly dashes out of the woods. A woman is riding on it's back
"Hold it!" She yells
Ponyta dashes up to them
"What do you think you're doing!" She yells at them accusingly
"Um trying to catch Pokemon from the Safari Zone?" Ash answers nervously
"Well this area of the Safari Zone is off limits. Didn't you read the sign?" The woman asks
"What sign?" Misty asks
Flashback
Alex groans, "I'm so tired of walking." He leans against a sign
"Come on Alex. We've only been out here for a few hours." Ash says
"It feels like an eternity."
"Ooh I think I see some Pokemon over there!" Ash dashes off. Misty, Brock and Pikachu follow him. Alex groans and trudges after them not even bothering to look at the sign
"Warning you are entering The Laramie Big P Ranch. CATCHING POKEMON IS PROHIBITED!"
Flashback ends
"Oh that sign." Alex groans
"We're sorry. We didn't realize." Ash apologizes
"Well since you didn't catch any Pokemon I'll let you off with a warning." The woman says
"Thank you!" Brock suddenly grabs her hand, "You are so wise and gentle."
The woman just stares at Brock confused. Misty growls and grabs him by the ear
"Don't make her change her mind!" Misty drags Brock away
"Could someone please get this dog off me!" Alex yells
The woman whistles and Growlithe hops off Alex
"Thank you."
"Anyhow I'm Lara Laramie and you're all in The Laramie Big P Ranch. A Pokemon preserve where wild Pokemon are raised and grow up in their natural habitats."
"Wow that's cool. I'm Ash Ketchum and these are friends Brock, Misty, Alex and Pikachu." Ash makes introductions
Pikachu
"Wait we're on the Laramie Big P Ranch?" Brock asks excitedly, "Wow every Pokemon breeder knows of this place. Pokemon that are raised on this ranch tend to be stronger than more domesticated Pokemon."
Alex hobbles over to them, "How come the ranch is connected to the Safari Zone?"
"That was a deal my ancestors made with the people who built the Safari Zone." Lara Laramie answers, "You see before Fuchsia City and by extension the Safari Zone were built a bunch of nomadic clans used to travel through this area with their Pokemon herds. In exchange for the land a preservation was set up to protect those clans' Pokemon and allow them to be raised in peace. The Laramie clan were given control of the preservation and it's been like this ever since."
"Still you'd think there would be more than one sign." Misty suggests
I'm guessing no one was expected to wonder this deep into the Safari Zone. If you came from the other side you'd have stumbled on the village first." Lara explains
"Can we see the village?" Ash asks
"Oh sure I'll lead you all right there." Lara replies, "Follow me."
They walk behind Lara as she rides Ponyta slowly. Ash takes out his Pokedex to scan it
Ponyta the Fire Horse Pokemon. A Fire type. As a newborn, it can barely stand. However, through galloping, its legs are made tougher and faster. Ponyta evolves into Rapidash. This Ponyta is Female
"Hey Lara how can you ride Ponyta without it's flames burning you?" Misty asks
"Oh there's nothing to worry about there. Ponyta won't burn anyone it trusts." Lara answers
"Really?" Ash reaches out and touches Ponyta's fiery mane
"Ah! It burns!" Ash yells. He tosses out Squirtle who uses Water Gun on his hand
"Do you not understand what the word 'trusts' means?" Alex asks him
Lara Laramie is showing everyone around the ranch. There's a whole bunch of wild Pokemon being cared for
"Wow. It must be tough raising all these Pokemon." Misty says
"It can be. But it's worth it." Lara replies, "We're proud of the all the work we do here. Which is why we're throwing a big party tonight."
"A party?" Everyone asks excitedly
"How about you all come as my guests?" Lara offers
"Woohoo! Yeah!" They cheer
Pika Pikachu!
"And if you stay at the ranch tonight then you can all attend the big race tomorrow."
"Race? What race?" Ash asks curiously
"Every year all the clans come together to hold a big Pokemon race. Whoever wins the race becomes an honorary member of the Laramie clan." Lara explains
"What happens if someone from your clan wins?" Alex asks
Lara shrugs, "Life just goes on as normal."
The ground starts shaking all of a sudden
"The Tauros are back." Misty says
"Nah that sounds different." Lara says
A bunch of Dodrio speed past. They're so fast that Ash was barely able to get a peak of them
"Wow"
A Dodrio stops next to Lara. A man is sitting on top of the bird's back, "Howdy Lara."
Ash pulls out his pokedex and scans Dodrio
Dodrio the Triple Bird Pokemon. A Normal/Flying type. When Doduo evolves into this odd breed, one of its heads splits into two. This Pokémon runs at nearly 40 mph. Dodrio evolves from Doduo. This Dodrio is Male
"Is that true?" Ash asks shocked
"Yep. And that's why we're gonna win the big Pokemon race tomorrow." The man answers
"Don't be so sure Dario. It takes more than speed to win." Lara replies
"Just be ready to lose." Dario replies. Him and Dodrio ride off
"He seems nice." Alex says sarcastically
"He's not that bad. He just gets really competitive." Lara replies
The Pokegang are enjoying themselves at the party. Ash, Alex and Pikachu are busy stuffing their faces
"Food food food." Ash says excitedly as he takes a bite out of everything he can get his hands on
"Man this stuff is delicious!" Alex says
Pika Pika Pikachu!
Lara is watching stunned while Misty and Brock are just embarrassed
"They sure have an appetite." Lara says
"Lara!" Dario runs towards them in a panic, "Your Tauros have gone crazy back at the ranch!"
"What!" Lara suddenly dashes towards the ranch. She whistles and Ponyta rides up to her. She hops onto Ponyta and rides off
"We better follow her! See if we can help." Brock says
"Right." Misty grabs Ash and Alex by their collars and drags them with. Dario watches them all go with a smirk on his face
Lara reaches the ranch and sees her Tauros are all attacking each other
"Cut it out!" She yells but they ignore her. There's a weird flash of light and that seems to be upsetting them
"Growlithe get in there and settle them down!"
Growlithe!
Growlithe hops over the fence and rushes around the Tauros barking at them. The Tauros are calmed down
"Nice going Growlithe." Lara says
There's a rustling sound in the bush nearby
"Hmm?"
Something leaps out of the bush, it's too dark to see what it is but something metallic shines on it's head. Ponyta is startled and throws Lara off
"Ahhh!" She lands on her arm and cries out in pain. Whatever startled Ponyta dashes off
"Lara!" Brock and the others rush over. Brock helps Lara sit up. Ponyta is thrashing around
"Ponyta!" Ash yells and tries to calm it down
"Lara are you alright?" Brock asks concerned
"Yeah I'm fine. I just need-" She puts pressure on her arm, "Ahhhhh!"
"Ooh yeah that's broken." Alex says
Brock and Misty help her up
"I need to calm Ponyta." Lara turns and sees Ash pulling on Ponyta's reins
"Settle down Ponyta!" Ash struggles to calm the horse. He keeps trying and eventually manages to soothe it
(He's good.) Lara thinks
Team Rocket are watching from their hiding spot
"Nice work Meowth." Jessie says
"I do my best." Meowth replies
"Let's go tell that Dario kid that we succeeded." James says
Everyone is in Lara's house. Her arm has been put into a sling
"There's no way I'm gonna be able to ride like this." Lara says dejectedly
Ponyta looks down sadly
"That's too bad." Ash says, "You both seemed really excited about it."
Lara glances at Ponyta. "I may not be able to race but there might be a way for Ponyta to."
"What do you mean?" Ash asks
"You can ride Ponyta."
"Me!" Ash yells shocked
"Ash!" Everyone else yells shocked
"I saw how you handled Ponyta earlier. You can do it."
"But Ponyta will burn me." Ash says nervously
Lara runs her hand along Ponyta's cheek, "Ponyta if you win the race tomorrow with a new rider that will prove just how great you are. Everyone will know that you're the best of all and that will the best praise for me. Won't you please let Ash ride you?"
Ponyta nods. Ash cautiously reaches to pet it and doesn't burn his hand
Ash is outside practicing. So far he has fallen off Ponyta three times
"Ponyta might be willing but that doesn't change the fact that Ash has absolutely no riding skills." Alex comments
"He'll be ready." Lara says determined
"Hmm is it possible for us to enter this race as well?" Brock asks
"Yeah sure. Just as long as you have a Pokemon you can ride on it." Lara replies
"In that case I'll use Onix." Brock says
"I'll enter to." Misty says, "I can use Starmie."
Alex pulls out a Safari Ball and a Gold painted Poke ball, "Hmm. I have two options."
He lets both his Pokemon out
Rhyhorn!
Rarrrr!
Misty shrieks and ducks behind Brock
"Hey Rhyhorn are you willing to let me ride you in the race tomorrow?" Alex asks
Rhyhorn scoffs and returns itself
"I guess that's a no." Alex says, "Oh well Gyarados will do."
Team Rocket are speaking to Dario
"Nice work. I expected no less from Team Rocket." Dario says
"Now that miss Laramie is out of the race you'll be a shoe in to win." Jessie says
"Once I win I'll become a member of the Laramie clan, and then I'll be able to properly reward you for your efforts." Dario says smugly
"We're gonna be rich!" Team Rocket cheer
It's the day of The Big P Pokemon Race. All the contestants have lined up at the starting line and have climbed onto their mounts. Ash is riding Ponyta, Misty is riding Starmie, Brock is riding Onix, Alex is riding Gyarados, Dario is riding Dodrio, Pikachu for some reason is riding Squirtle, and then there's also a Raticate, a Tauros, a Nidorina, a Sandslash, an Electrode and a Rhyhorn
"That could have been us." Alex mumbles to his Safari Ball
"Welcome everyone to the Big P Pokemon Race!" The Announcer yells and the crowd claps excitedly. Lara is sitting in the front row
"We have some returning racers from previous years' events such as Dario and his Dodrio!"
The crowd cheers at Dario's name
"We also have Lara Laramie's Ponyta who will be racing with a new rider today!"
The crowd cheers
"Go Ash and Ponyta!" Lara cheers
"Now the rules of the race are simple! Our contestants will run along the course. Whoever clears all the obstacles and reaches the finish line first will be our winner!" The Announcer yells
"Ready to race Ponyta?" Ash asks
Ponyta responds by igniting it's flame. It however does not burn Ash
All the Pokemon get ready
"Ready...set...Race!" The horn goes off and all the Pokemon rush out...except Gyarados
"Gyarados move!" Alex yells
Gyarados yawns and lays down for a nap
"Now's not the time for sleeping!"
"Ooh tough break for newcomer Alex! His Gyarados seems much more interested in sleeping than actually competing!" The Announcer yells
"This is the most embarrassing day of my life."
The rest of the Pokemon are all dashing down a straight path surrounded by tall grass. Pikachu and Squirtle are currently behind everyone else. Dario and Dodrio take the lead. Dodrio takes an early lead as they make good distance on the rest of the group
"Dario and Dodrio pull away from the rest of the pack!" The Announcer yells, "If they keep up this pace then they'll be unstoppable!"
"You can beat him Ash." Lara says confidently
Something hard shoots out from the grass and hits Tauros in the face. Tauros roars in pain and starts thrashing around uncontrollably. His trainer tries desperately to get him under control
"It seems something has happened to Tauros and it has lost control!" The Announcer yells
Tauros slams into Nidorina
"And it takes out Nidorina!" The Announcer yells
Nidorina hops back to it's feet angrily and attacks Tauros
"And we have a battle going on in the middle of this race! It seems both Nidorina and Tauros are out!"
Team Rocket are hiding in the grass. James has a slingshot, "I got a bullseye!"
The Pokemon reach the next obstacle which is a climb up a hill. They dash up it. Dario and Dodrio still in the lead but everyone else is close behind...except Pikachu and Squirtle who are slowly dragging themselves up the hill
"Bringing up the rear is Squirtle and Pikachu! It seems these Pokemon need to get in better shape!" The Announcer yells
Squirtle!
The Pokemon are now dashing down the other side of the hill. Electrode suddenly takes the lead due to it's rolling giving it massive momentum. It's trainer is running constantly on it's back to ensure he doesn't get knocked off
"A brilliant strategy by Electrode!" The Announcer yells
They suddenly fall into a pit trap
"And they're out! An unlucky break!" The Announcer yells
Team Rocket giggle from behind a rock
Electrode starts glowing
"Oh no! Electrode is about to Self-Destruct!" The Announcer yells
Dodrio, Onix, Starmie and Rhyhorn all dash past but Ponyta, Raticate and Sandslash are unfortunately caught in the blast
"Ahhh!" Ash yells as he and Ponyta are thrown through the air
"Ash!" Lara yells watching everything on TV
"Oh and it seems that explosion has taken out Ponyta, Raticate and Sandslash!" The announcer yells as the three Pokemon and their trainers lay unconscious on the ground, "A very sad end to Ponyta's run in this race!"
Pikachu and Squirtle rush over and check on Ash
"Wait what's this?" The Announcer asks
Pikachu fires a Thunderbolt
"Ahhh!" Ash and Ponyta hop to their feet
"Ash and Ponyta are back in the race!"
The crowd cheers. Ash hops onto Ponyta's back
"Thanks Pikachu! Let's go Ponyta!" Ash tugs on the reins and Ponyta dashes down the course
"Meanwhile up ahead the rest of our racers have reached one of the most difficult obstacles!"
The Pokemon have stopped near a lake. A bunch of stones are floating above the water.
"They need to hop across the stones to get to the other side!" The Announcer yells
"Let's go Dodrio!" Dario yells and Dodrio starts hoping across. They easily make it
Rhyhorn hops onto one of the stones...and immediately sinks to the bottom
"And Rhyhorn is too heavy! It and it's trainer are out of the race!"
Alex is watching, "I guess I dodged a bullet."
Onix stares at the stones terrified
"Don't worry Onix." Brock rubs Onix's head, "We'll call it quits here."
"And Brock and Onix are giving up on the race! Probably a wise decision."
"Don't worry Brock. We'll catch up." Misty says and Starmie suddenly dives into the water. It starts swimming to the other side
"And Misty has found a loophole! Starmie is a Water type and therefore moves quicker in water!" The Announcer yells
Ash and Ponyta dash past Brock and leap onto the stone. They easily start hopping across
"Yeah go Ash!" Brock yells
Pikachu and Squirtle arrive and Squirtle dives into the water
"We are down to four racers! Dario and Dodrio are currently in the lead followed by Misty and Starmie! Ash and Ponyta as well as Pikachu and Squirtle are not far behind!" The Announcer yells
Dario and Dodrio reach the next obstacle. They are on the edge of a cliff and below them a bunch of rock are jutting out. Each rock has a bowl of Pokemon food on it
"This part of the race is a chance for the Pokemon to rest and restore their energy! They must choose a bowl to eat and then finish the entire bowl before they can carry on!" The Announcer yells
Dodrio hops down to a bowl. The middle head moves in to eat but the other two heads suddenly peck at it. The three heads start firing
"Calm down you three!" Dario yells
"And it seems that Dodrio can't decide which of it's heads gets first bite!" The Announcer yells
Ponyta, Starmie and Squirtle are able to catch up. Ponyta and Starmie start eating quickly while Pikachu and Squirtle stare at the food amazed. They start scarfing it down
"And the rest of the competitors have caught up! Dodrio might have blown Dari-" a bunch of smoke suddenly blocks out the cameras, "It seems we are having some technical difficulties!" The Announcer yells confused
"What's going on!" Ash yells
He hears laughing
Jessie: Prepare for trouble!
James: Make it double!
Gyarados widens it's eyes. It raises itself up
"Uh Gyarados?" Alex asks confused
Gyarados suddenly dashes down the track
"And Gyarados is suddenly in this race! Will it be able to catch up though! And what is even happening right now!" The Announcer yells
Alex screams and clutches onto Gyarados' back for dear life
Jessie: Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light!
James: Surrender now or prepare to fight!
Meowth: Meowth that's right!
"Team Rocket!" Ash and Misty yell. Pikachu and Squirtle are too busy stuffing their faces to notice
"We don't have time to deal with you three stooges!" Misty yells
"How dare you compare us to...I mean come on up I'd like to have a word with you." Jessie asks politely
"Yes come on up and bring that Ponyta with you." James says
"Then I can mess you up again!" Meowth yells
"It was you!" Ash yells, "You broke Lara's arm!"
"It was such a sad accident." Jessie says pretending to cry
"We couldn't sleep after it happened." James is also pretending to cry
Ash growls, "Pikachu Squirtle prepare for battle!"
Pikachu and Squirtle hop away from their food and prepare to fight. Team Rocket smirk
"We're not going to make this easy!" Jessie says, "Go Arbok!"
Cha-bok!
"Go Weezing and Weepinbell!" James yells
Weezing!
Weepinbell hops onto James' head
"Ah get it off!" James throws Weepinbell off
Meowth flashes his claws, "We're not letting you twerps win that race!"
Dodrio finishes eating it's food. Dario laughs, "Thanks for the distraction Team Rocket!"
Him and Dodrio dash off
"Dario's working with Team Rocket!" Misty yells
"That cheater!" Ash yells
"Ash you and Ponyta go on ahead. We'll handle Team Rocket." Misty hops off Starmie's back
"Alright. Good luck you guys." Ash and Ponyta dash off
Everyone else gets ready to fight
"This is such a lucky break! Not only is Dario going to win but we can also swipe Pikachu!" Jessie says
"No way is that happening!" Misty yells. She prepares to give Starmie an instruction when they hear a stampeding
"What's that?" Misty asks confused
Rarrrrrrr!
Team Rocket's eyes widen
"It can't be!"
Gyarados rushes towards them
"Gyarados slow down please!" Alex yells
"It's Gyarados!" Misty yells
Gyarados fires a Hyper Beam between Team Rocket and Misty, Squirtle, Starmie and Pikachu. The ground explodes
"Ahhhh!" Misty, Starmie, Pikachu and Squirtle are blown back while Team Rocket are blasted off
"No it's not fair!" James yells
"Yeah we were winning!" Meowth yells
"Well now we-"
"Blasting off again!" They yell
"Hey where did Team Rocket come from?" Alex asks confused
Gyarados yawns and goes back to sleep
"Here comes Dario and Dodrio!" The Announcer yells
Dodrio is dashing down the final course. A straight line to the finish
"There appears to be no competition left! This will be an easy...wait what's that on the horizon!" The Announcer asks
Ponyta and Ash dash down the path. They are gaining on Dodrio
"We're almost there Ponyta!" Ash yells
"Here comes Ash and Ponyta! But will they be able to overtake Dodrio!"
The crowd is cheering excitedly
"Come on Ponyta! You can do it!" Lara yells
Dario glances back, "Dammit!"
Ponyta and Ash catch up to Dodrio and Dario and now they're trying to overtake each other
"They're neck and neck! The finish line is getting closer!" The Announcer yells
Ponyta starts pulling ahead
"It seems Ponyta has gained a slight lead!"
"No! Dodrio Peck!" Dario yells and Dodrio attack Ponyta. The crowd gasps in shock as Ponyta neighs in pain and falls back
"A dirty move by Dario gets Dodrio back in the lead!" The Announcer yells
Ponyta is still running but unfortunately it's adrenaline rush is wearing off. Dodrio is easily starting to outdistance it
"It seems it's over for Ponyta! There's no way for it to overtake Dodrio now except for some miracle!" The Announcer yells
Lara watches anxiously
"Come on Ponyta!" Ash yells
Ponyta starts glowing
"And the miracle comes!" The Announcer yells, "Ponyta is evolving in the middle of the race!"
The crowd gasp as Ponyta evolves into Rapidash. Lara watches on amazed.
"Woohoo! Come on Rapidash! Let's win this!" Ash yells
Rapidash speeds up
"Rapidash are very fast runners being able to gallop at nearly 150 miles per hours!" The Announcer yells
Rapidash gains on Dodrio
"Come on that has to be cheating!" Dario yells
"You can't complain about cheating!" Ash yells at him
Rapidash overtakes Dodrio and leaves it in her dust
"And Rapidash easily takes the lead!" The Announcers yells
"No!" Dario yells, "Faster Dodrio!"
Dodrio keeps running but Rapidash has vastly increased the gap between them. It crosses the finish line and the whole crowd erupts into loud cheers
"It does it! Rapidash and it's rider Ash win the Big P Pokemon Race!" The Announcer yells
"Yes! Way to go Ash and Rapidash!" Lara cheers
A trophy is presented to Ash and Lara while a medal has been hung around Rapidash's neck. All the eliminated contestants are standing on the sidelines watching and cheering, except Dario who spits on the ground
"That shoulda been me."
Alex suddenly bashes him over the head with his baseball bat knocking him out, "I prefer you down there."
"Thank you so much Ash." Lara says, "We couldn't have done it without you."
"It was no trouble." Ash replies
The Pokegang are resting at the Fuchsia City Pokemon Centre
"Phew that was tiring." Misty says
"Yeah we should all get a goodnight's rest and then we can head out tomorrow." Brock says
"Where are we going anyway?" Ash asks
"Well I'm assuming you want to go for your seventh gym badge." Brock pulls out the map, "There's a gym on Cinnabar Island so we can head there. However there's a slight issue."
"What is it?" Alex asks
"Well the ferry to Cinnabar is quite far from here. It'll probably take us weeks to reach it." Brock says
"Is that our only option?" Misty asks
"Well we could always use our Pokemon to swim from here towards the Island but-"
"Let's do that." Ash says
"Are you nuts?" Misty asks
"The sooner we get to Cinnabar Island the better." Ash says
"Ash none of our Water Pokemon are strong enough to carry us that far. Other than..." Misty gulps, "Gyarados."
Ash sighs, "Fine I guess we go the long way."
"Cheer up Ash. The next town is Sunnytown. I heard there's one of those Elemental League tournaments taking place there." Brock says
Ash cheers up, "Alright I can't wait!"

Alex: I told you it was good
Ash gulps
Ash: Yeah you're right. Could I uh...borrow this
Misty rushes over
Misty: Hey guys! What are you reading?
Ash and Alex hide the manga
Ash and Alex: Nothing!
Misty stares at them suspiciously. She snatches the manga from them and checks it out. Her face goes red with rage and they gulp
Misty: You perverts!
She attacks them with a giant mallet
Me: I have to get this under control. I'll see you all next time
