Secrets. Friends weren't supposed to keep them. Remus Lupin sighed as he walked out of his dorm room to see his two best friends, James Potter, and Sirius Black. It was the weekend, so they had some time off. However, Remus didn't want to do anything. The full moon was two nights ago, and he just wanted to rest.
"Hey, Remus," Sirius said, waving him over. Remus put the letter he was holding in his robes and walked over to him. They were dead, the last full moon. His parents were dead.
"Remus?" James asked when Remus sat down and pulled out a book.
"Yeah," Remus answered, voice hoarse. He had been crying all night since he got the letter.
"What's wrong?" Sirius asked, looking up from his Exploding Snap cards. Remus, however, didn't answer. He knew if he tried to lie his friends would know.
"Nothing," he tried anyway. Sirius raised an eyebrow.
"Nothing?" James asked, looking at his werewolf friend's sad, tired eyes. "Remus you know you can tell us anything, right?" James added standing up.
Remus looked at him, confused. James sounded serious for once. He hadn't sounded like that since they found out he was a werewolf. Maybe he could tell them? Remus shook his head and looked at the fireplace.
"I know. I'm going to get breakfast," Remus said before he stood up and walked out of the room.
James and Sirius looked at each other after Remus left.
"Something is off. He's keeping something from us again," Sirius said, standing up. He walked over to where Remus was sitting and found a letter.
"James?" Sirius said, holding the letter in his hand up to him. James walked over to him and snatched the letter from his hand.
"Hey!" Sirius said, but the thirteen-year-old ignored him and started to read aloud.
"Dear Mr. Remus John Lupin,
We regret to inform you that a werewolf attacked your house on the last full moon. Your father was killed first. Your mother tried to escape but she didn't get far. We are deeply sorry for your loss. Once the school year is done you will be picked up by a ministry employee.
We are deeply sorry about your loss.
The Ministry of Magic,"
James slowly lowered the letter and turned to Sirius who looked like he wanted to punch someone.
"Why would he hide this from us!" Sirius yelled. James shook his head.
"I think he didn't want us to worry. I need to write to my father. There's no way he's going to an orphanage where they will treat him like a monster. Remus already does that to himself. Can you find him and tell him that we know?" James said, putting the letter down. Sirius nodded and ran out of the room.
The only thoughts going through Remus's head were 'What will happen to me now?'
He knew he had no future because of him being a monster, but now he was a parentless monster. Remus looked down at the food that he hadn't touched. He wasn't hungry, he just wanted to be away from James and Sirius. They meant well but they couldn't help with this.
"Remus?" Remus didn't look up when he heard Sirius's gentle voice. He didn't want him to see the anger and tears in his eyes. "Remus, I'm so sorry about your parents," Sirius said, sitting down next to Remus. Remus looked up sharply.
"How do you…" Remus cut himself off and felt about his robes, then sighed. The letter must have fallen out of his pocket. "There's nothing you can do," Remus said with a sigh. Sirius shook his head.
"James is writing to his father to ask if you can live with them," Sirius said with a bright smile. Remus looked up.
"What? No! Sirius, that's a bad idea. I'm a…"
"If you call yourself a monster. I will throw this at you," he said picking up bread. Remus laughed a little and sighed.
"Will it work, though?" Remus asked, picking at his food. Sirius nodded.
"Yes," was all Sirius said before eating with Remus.
It had been a day since Remus got the letter and since James wrote to his father. They were all in their common room planning their next prank when an owl flew in.
"It's from my father," James said, grabbing the letter. He skimmed it before he looked at Remus.
"What did he say?" Remus asked, putting his book down. James smiled at Sirius.
"What?" Remus asked when James didn't answer.
"Father said yes. He's getting a room for you for the full moon," James said, standing up and dancing around. Sirius laughed before he did the same. Remus laughed as he watched his two best friends dance around the room. He hoped that his parents were in peace and that he would make them proud.
