Prologue: Endar Spire

Earth 26

Tears flowed down Dawn Summer's face as she screamed in pain. The white-haired man in front of her was grinning at her as he slowly sliced into her stomach just below the ribs. "Shallow cuts, shallow cuts... let the blood flow free..." he said.

Buffy Summers leapt up the stairs, using all of her supernatural slayer strength and speed. As she emerged at the top, she could see her sister tied tightly to the end of the tower, one arm pinned to each side of the gantry. Dawn was wearing some elaborate velvet dress and her bare feet clung to the end of the tower as if her life depended on it.

"Dawn!" Buffy called, her sister's gaze connecting with hers.

"Buffy!" came the return cry, the tremor in Dawn's voice showing just how scared she was. Neither Buffy nor Dawn noticed the small amount of blood beginning to trickle down Dawn's ankles to her feet from where she had been cut on her abdomen – shallow wounds, to bring more blood to the surface.

The white-haired man turned at the sound of Buffy's voice. He grinned maliciously, eyes that were unnaturally black gleaming in anticipation. "Now this should be interesting…"

Only focused on Dawn, Buffy shouldered past him and shoved him from the tower.

"Buffy, it hurts," Dawn cried as Buffy reached her, frantically pulling at the bonds that secured her sister to the tower. Slayer strength made short work of them as Buffy murmured platitudes to Dawn.

"It's going to be ok, Dawn," Buffy said as she helped Dawn walk back along the tower.

"Don't you have something to do?" asked a voice in the back of Dawn's mind.

As they reached the stairs Dawn stopped and gazed back toward the end of the gantry. She ignored Buffy's efforts to get her down the stairs as she watched the portal that had formed beneath the end of the gantry growing bigger and bigger.

"Buffy, it's started."

Buffy looked at the portal to hell glowing at the end of the gangway, blue light flashing and hitting out at the town of Sunnydale below. Wherever the light hit, disruption and chaos could be seen. Buffy was aware of Dawn talking, even going as far as to answer her, but her mind was elsewhere.

Buffy glanced toward the portal and remembered that the portal would only close when the energy was gone, when the blood stopped. But Dawn was alive, her blood wasn't stopping. She knew she couldn't allow Dawn to die. Not her little sister.

Buffy knew what the primeval Slayer had meant during her vision quest when it had said that death was her gift. She looked at the sun, rising in the East above the desert, heralding a new day, a new beginning, a new dawn. Then she knew what she had to do. She turned to Dawn; eyes filled with purpose.

"You have a destiny you need to complete," said the voice in the back of Dawn's mind.

Dawn shook her head as she took a deep breath. "You can't, Buffy."

"I have to, Dawn," Buffy said looking at her little sister.

"It's not your destiny, it's mine," said Dawn. She wasn't sure where the voice in her head was coming from. But she could feel it deep within herself that she had to go. That she had a destiny to complete.

"I can't let you do this; it will kill you," said Buffy.

Dawn smiled at her sister. "No, it won't."

"Yes, it will," Buffy said with confusion. "Giles said the only way it would stop is when the blood flowed no more, when you're dead. I can do this for you, Dawn, because you were made from me. You can live."

Dawn smiled as she brushed a strand of hair from her sister's face. "Giles was right and wrong," she stated. "There is another way for it to stop. I don't know how, Buffy. But I know I have to enter that portal. I have to go where it takes me."

"No!" said Buffy as fought the tears that threatened to come.

"I have to! Look at what's happening!" said Dawn as a rift opened and a huge dragon flew out of it and past them. "Buffy—"

"I don't care!" said Buffy as the tears began to fall down her face. "Dawn, I won't lose you-"

Dawn smiled and wiped the tears from her sister's face, "You won't. I promise I will come back," she said as she pulled her sister in close so she could whisper in Buffy's ear. "I love you. I'll always love you. But this is not work you have to do. I do not know how, but I know that I have a destiny on the other side of that portal. You taught me not forsake my destiny. Tell our friends, that I love them. And that I will see them soon."

Buffy looked over Dawn's shoulder as her sister whispered in her ear. Somehow deep down inside herself she knew Dawn was right. That Dawn had something to do and that Dawn was too much like her. She looked her sister in the eyes. "Promise me that you will be brave. That you will live, for me?"

Dawn smiled. "I promise and I will see you again," she said as she kissed her sister's cheek. She turned and ran; she dove from the top of the tower into the portal below. She was falling, falling through the air. Then she hit the portal and in a flash of light she was gone.

Buffy watched as the portal contracted in on itself and then winked out of existence. She wiped a tear from her face and smiled sadly. "I love you, Dawn. I will always love you."

"You will see her again."

Buffy spun on the spot and saw Whistler. "You," she said, her voice laced with venom.

"I did not do it, nor the Powers," Whistler stated.

"Then who?" Buffy asked.

"More by what," Whistler explained. "You call it magic. Others in other dimensions call it by another name. The name it is called, in the dimension that Dawn has traversed to, is the Force. Dawn as you know was made from you, but she is not a clone. The monks to create her had to do so with help. Dawn is a child of the Force. She is a Chosen One, amongst Chosen Ones."

"A Chosen One?" Buffy asked with a frown. "You mean she's a …"

"Slayer?" Whistler asked. "No, she is not a Slayer. Though she did have the potential to become one. But she is also something more. And when she has completed what the Force wants her to do, you will need to find a way to bring her home."

Earth 77

For a moment Sarryn was floating between dream and reality. His eyes flung open and he sat upright in his bed. The explosions were real, the Endar Spire was under attack. He darted towards her footlocker and quickly got dressed in his combat suit with stealth field generator. Twin blasters and his dagger were holstered and he quickly grabbed some stims he kept close.

The door opened before he could reach it. Trask Ulgo stepped through. "Baill, the Sith are infiltrating this ship. We must get to the escape pods."

"Figured that out all by yourself, did you?" Sarryn asked dryly.

" Baill! People are dying here; we must work together if we want to make this through."

"You mean you need my help to make this through," Sarryn spat. "Whatever, Trask. I'm getting out of here. If you want to tag along to improve the chance of your survival, be my guest. As long as you keep your comments to yourself this time."

"I really wonder what the Jedi see in you," Trask mused. "Sure, you got a nice file. Able to speak most current alien languages, a charismatic and persuasive personality and a frightening amount of skill. All signs of a good leader. But in reality, you're just a man with an attitude from here to Dantooine."

"The fact that you're a useful grunt is what is keeping you alive, soldier boy. Why don't you come with me so you can put that big, throbbing blaster to use, hm?" Sarryn said. He knew that Trask was his best bet to get off this vessel. He took his silence for agreement and nodded into the hallway. "Take point."

Earth 26

Buffy came down from the tower and faced Giles, Anya, Willow, Tara, Xander and Spike who could see she held tears in her eyes.

"Dawn?" Giles asked already knowing the answer.

"Gone," said Buffy as she looked up towards where the portal had been.

"Dead?" Giles wondered as he looked around the area searching for Dawn's body.

Buffy looked back down at Giles and then shook her head. "No," she said.

"If she's not dead and she's not here…" Willow said in confusion.

"Wherever she is she is okay, I know that," said Buffy. Somewhere deep within Buffy it was like she could actually sense her sister even though the portal was closed. She wondered if this Force that Whistler had mentioned had touched her somehow just as it had Dawn. She looked back at her friends. "And I know when she is done with what she has to do that we will have to try and find a way to bring her home."

"We will find her, Buffy," said Xander as Willow, Tara, Giles and even Anya and Spike all nodded in agreement.

Earth 77

"What are we doing here?" Sarryn asked as he and Trash entered the medical bay. They had taken a small detour at Trask's insistence.

"Two days ago," Trask explained. "A young girl not much older than sixteen or so appeared mysteriously onboard. The Jedi were very interested in her. If the Jedi are interested in her, she must be valuable."

Sarryn sighed, he couldn't fault Trask's thinking. Besides one more person with a blaster would be useful.

Trask moved to a bed that held the medical bay's sole occupant. He looked at the table next to her and was glad to see that the medical personnel had been preparing to wake her before they ran for their lives. He picked up the injector and put it to the girl's neck and injected her.

The drug was fast acting and Dawn opened her eyes and looked around. "Where am I?" she asked before looking at the two men. "Who are the two of you?" she asked.

"I'm Lieutenant Trask Ulgo, Republic Fleet," said Trask. "And this is Lieutenant Sarryn Baill. And you're on the Republic ship Endar Spire."

Dawn looked at Trask and Sarryn with a blank look. "Republic?" she inquired wondering where she was on Earth. No countries she knew of where simply called the Republic.

"Republic is the galactic government that governs the planets in the Republic," Trask explained wondering how she didn't know about the Republic.

Dawn realized she was no longer on Earth, at the singular mention of a galactic government, that the portal had dropped her on a spaceship somewhere in outer space, maybe not even in her reality.

"How can you not know this?" Sarryn asked as he looked Dawn over.

Dawn shrugged as she decided to play the amnesia card. She wasn't sure if they would believe her anyways if she told them the truth. "I don't remember much of anything to tell the truth," she lied. "I think one of your doctor's said I had amnesia. About the only thing I remember is my name which is Dawn Summers."

"My apologies," said Trask feeling sympathetic to Dawn's plight. "I was not aware of your condition. Here..." He handed her some clothes. "Put these on."

Dawn got out of the bed and took the clothes from Trask. "Okay, where can I go and change?" she asked as Trask motioned toward a privacy screen. She turned and walked behind the screen. She changed out of the hospital gown and put on what looked like a uniform similar to the one Trask and Sarryn were wearing. They didn't exactly fit and looked bulky on her. At least though she was now dressed in something other than the hospital gown.

"Your choice, you may need one or the other before the day is over," said Trask when Dawn came back around the privacy screen. He held up a vibrosword and a blaster.

Dawn knew how her sister felt about guns. But she wasn't even sure of where she was or what kind of bad guys were waiting in the wings. She decided to err on the side of caution. "Can I have both?" she asked as Trask nodded and handed both weapons to her. She strapped the vibrosword and scabbard across her back and the blaster and holster to her hip.

"Now we should hurry up and go," said Trask.

"Now we have to get off this ship," Sarryn reminded Trask.

Dawn wondered why they had to get off the ship. "Why?" she asked.

"The ship is currently under attack from the Sith," Trask answered.

"Sith?" asked Dawn.

Trask sighed. "They are enemies of the Republic," he said as they left the medical bay. Suddenly a voice came over the ship's intercom.

"This is Carth Onasi – the Sith are threatening to overrun our position! We can't hold out long against their firepower! All hands to the bridge!"

Trask shook his head. "That was Carth Onasi, he's one of the Republic's best pilots!" he said. "He's seen more combat than the rest of the Endar Spire's crew put together. If he says things are bad, you better believe it. We have to get to the bridge to help defend Bastilla!"

Dawn looked at the two men and decided to follow their lead at least till she could get more information on what was going on and even more importantly why she was there. She followed behind them. She saw that the corridors were filled with what Trask identified as Sith troopers who were slaughtering people wearing the same uniforms they were.

They came to a door that was blocked by two Republic soldiers that were slaughtered by the Sith. Dawn was about to ask what they should do when Trask and Sarryn attacked the Sith. She dove down next to the open doorway as she pulled out the blaster from its holster. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed Trask charge her target. She cursed Trask as she was forced to change targets to keep from hitting him. Between her, Sarryn and Trask they managed to take out the Sith blocking their way.

"I've got a feeling that won't be our last battle with the Sith," Trask said.

Dawn rolled her eyes. "Yeah well," she said as she watched as Trask kneel down to search the bodies of the Sith. "I know they're the bad guys and all. But isn't looting corpses kind of tacky?"

Trask looked at Dawn. "They have no use for the equipment anymore."

Dawn was taken aback by his answer. "Was that the way this dimension worked," she wondered. "To the victors went the spoils of war?" She followed them down the corridor and came upon another firefight with the Republic soldiers outnumbered by Sith troops. She was shocked when she watched one of the Sith throw a grenade not only killing two Republic soldiers in one blast but also one his own comrades as well.

They took care of the remaining Sith before moving on.

"What's that sound?" asked Dawn as it reached her ears.

"Lightsabers clashing," answered Sarryn. It was a sound that haunted his dreams. Part of him hoped to find Bastila, but instead it was one of the knight's underlings. She was dueling with a dark Jedi.

The Jedi won, but the Jedi's euphoria didn't last for long, as she was killed by an overcharged power conduit.

Sarryn checked to see if Dawn and Trask were still able to fight, they continued onward.

"We should equip swords as the fighting will be close in there, much to close for blasters," Trask said when they reached the door to the bridge.

Dawn nodded as she holstered the blaster and unsheathed the vibrosword strapped to her back. "Gotcha," she said.

When the door opened, they found it occupied by a large group of Sith troopers. Trask's skill with the blasters together with Sarryn's stealth and Dawn's luck made short work of them.

"Bastila's not here on the bridge-they must have retreated to the escape pods," said Trask.

"A likely conclusion," agreed Sarryn.

"We better head that way too," said Trask. "The Sith want Bastila alive, but once she's off the ship there's nothing stopping them from blasting the Endar Spire into galactic dust!"

"Then we should make haste to get off the ship," said Dawn.

The stepped from the bridge into another hallway. A bald dark Jedi was approaching them through a corridor. This time there was no light Jedi to defend them. An idea came to Sarryn's mind. "Trask, engage that guy with a vibrosword, I'll try to sneak behind him to slit his throat." Trask did as he was told. He mindlessly grabbed his sword and ran through the door to attack the Jedi. Sarryn closed the door behind Trask. He effectively disabled it so it could no longer be opened, not without brute force anyway.

"Why did you do that?" asked Dawn.

"We wouldn't have won against a dark Jedi," answered Sarryn. "It was better to sacrifice one to save two."

Dawn didn't like sacrificing anyone, but she had to agree that it was likely the better option. "You're right," she said as she turned and followed Sarryn on towards the escape pods. She wondered if Buffy felt like this anytime she lost someone.

"This is Carth Onasi," came a voice over the loudspeaker. "I'm tracking your position through the Endar Spire's life support system. Bastila's escape pod is away—you two are the last surviving crew members of the Endar Spire! I can't wait for you two much longer; you have to get to the escape pods."

Earth 26

Buffy paced in the living room of her home as she watched Willow, who sat cross legged on the floor in front of her.

"The Coven in Devon doesn't know how to get to her," said Giles as he walked into the living room from the kitchen. "They do not have the power to open a portal to another dimension."

"I'm not going to leave her there Giles," said Buffy. "She's my sister after all."

"I know Buffy," said Giles as he remembered the speech Buffy had given him and the others before they had gone to face Glory. He thought back to that speech and how Buffy had said, 'She's me. The Monks made her out of me. I hold her and I feel closer to her than... It's more than just the memories they built, it's physical, it's... Dawn is a part of me. The only part that I...'

"But you need to be prepared for the possibility she is gone forever," he said with a sigh. He did not want to tell Buffy that, but he also did not want to get her hopes up either that Dawn may return.

"Actually, maybe not," said Willow as she stood up and turned towards her best friend and smiled. "I think I know what I have to do. Dawn was created from you, right? That's what you said in the Magic Box before we left to face Glory."

"Yeah," Buffy said as she thought back on the speech, she had given them when Giles had mentioned the only way to close the portal was for Dawn to be dead.

"Then it should be possible to open a portal to her using your blood," Willow suggested. She looked at Giles. "If they created Dawn out of Buffy, isn't it possible that Buffy might have a portion of the Key within her?"

Giles thought about it. It was possible of course. After all the monks had created a connection between them. He looked back at the redhead. "Are you sure you can do it, Willow?" he asked. "It would take massive amounts of magic to create a portal between this dimension and the next. More than any witch has ever channeled ever."

Willow nodded. "Yeah, I'm sure."

"Then we open the portal and I go and get her and you bring us back," said Buffy.

"I can't," Willow said as Giles and Buffy looked at her in confusion. She tried to explain. "Here's the thing. Dawn told you she had to go there right?" Buffy nodded. "So, she has something she has to do. If I send you then how am I going to know when to bring you both back?"

Buffy sighed. "So, you and I both go?"

"Again can't, at least not yet. More people I send or take with me the more magic it will take to keep the portal open," Willow said. "Eventually I might be able to do it. But right now, there is only one person that can go and that's me. I can get there and when she is ready to come back, I can use her blood to open the portal and bring both of us home."

Buffy nodded. "Okay," she said. "Then you be careful. We don't know what's waiting for you on the other side of that portal."

"Buffy, you can't be serious, sending Willow alone into an unknown situation," said Giles.

"I don't like it Giles," replied Buffy. "But Willow is the only one who can go. She just said so herself. And if she is the only way Dawn is coming home then she has to go."

Giles sighed and nodded in resignation. "Very well."

Earth 77

Reaching the escape pods was a piece of cake. There were no more dark Jedi in their way, just more Sith soldiers.

Using his stealth field Sarryn slit the throats of some Sith. Further on he repaired and reprogrammed a droid to protect him and Dawn. He also hacked a terminal to blow up a power conduit in the next room, wiping out a large group of hostiles. He allowed the droid to finish the rest.

"Come on, this ship is disintegrating," Onasi said when Sarryn and Dawn arrived at the pods. "Get in the pod so we can get out of here." Sarryn and Dawn did as they were told and quickly entered the last remaining pod. Onasi crawled inside after them and closed the hatch. When he was seated and strapped in he pressed the release button. With massive force they were slung away from the Endar Spire.

The last thing Dawn remembered before passing out were the strong vibrations caused by entering a planet's atmosphere.
