It was like a scene reminiscent of those found from war films.
The streets were silent, with abandoned or broken down vehicles left cluttered all over the area. The buildings themselves were showing some damage, most of it being from people wanting to loot the buildings for supplies or items they wished to steal, while some came about from vehicles crashing into them. This appeared to get worse when one got closer to the big city, having vehicle pile ups and burning blocks, and then there were the bodies left all over the place. Some appeared to have been trampled to death in a stampede, some died with expressions of fear on their faces, and then there were the corpses that have been dismembered in various manners. For a good number of them, they had obvious bite marks and scratched marks on part of their bodies.
But what set the tone of the situation and turned the scene into that of horror films were the shambling bodies moving about the area. Said bodies were missing chunks of their flesh if not full body parts, and those missing legs were dragging themselves with their arms. These have the exact same markings on parts of their bodies, but with the added addition of black nerves appearing on the skin like cancer and they were letting out soft groans or hisses as they moved about slowly.
At least until a plant vase fell off the window sill from a gust of wind, smashing into the windshield of the car below and setting off the alarm. That started a mad frenzy of dead bodies rushing towards it with almost unnerving speeds and ferocity one would normally associate with a hungry animal having found a meal and needed to compete with others. They quickly dogpiled the car and tried to find whatever was within while tearing each other apart to get the prize for themselves. At least until a giant cloud of purple smoke erupted from the car and covered the entire group of zombies in it, and once cleared, showed a group of ugly looking gnome decorations that littered the place and the wrecked car now silent in its place. The ones outside of the blast radius reverted back to their slow states, but if they could show emotions, they would likely be surprised at what just happened.
From the confusion going on, no one, at least those that were alive, noticed a figure coming from the next block flying on a broomstick and entering the department store through the broken windows. The young man in question remained hovering for a few moments before gently landing on his feet and getting off the broomstick.
"Right, got to make this quick." Harry Potter muttered as he snuck quietly about the building to find the supermarkets to grab what he needed. He may have casted silencing spells on his feet along with cleansing and smell suppression charms on his body, but it did not help his nerves as he walked past ruined stores and blood-smeared walls. The first store he got to was a godsend as it was a general goods store that still had a good number of food and bottles of water, all of which he packed into his charmed bag, along with whatever cash that he got from the broken cash register. The supermarket however was a problem; it had all the other items that were still good and not splattered by possibly contaminated blood, but there were still a few of the zombies, and he was running out of time and carrying space.
Thankfully he had a solution for this.
"Dobby." Harry called out to his friend who softly popped by his side with his hands covering his mouth as instructed to do when outside. A good precaution given the elf's widening eyes and the muffled cries at the scene. "Yeah, I know. This is pretty bad. Let's not stick around too long, okay?" His frantic nodding was Dobby's agreement to get the business done and be home safe. "First off, let's see if we can get these ones out of the way." Harry hummed at what to do, then he looked at a sports shop that still had the shutters in place.
"Dobby, go invisible and try to see if anyone or anything is in that shop, then come back." Dobby nodded and popped away silently. Harry waited anxiously while keeping an eye out of the zombies. The house elf appeared again to give a thumbs up and a quick report of no possible attackers in the shop. "Okay, pop me in." Dobby took his hand and Harry was inside the sports shop in a blink of the eye. Harry moved about trying to find what he needed for the distraction, quickly finding what he wanted along with others he needed to jury-rigged what he had planned before turning to Dobby.
"Okay, Dobby. I need your help with this." He held up the air-horns he had put together and currently had a few pads cushioning the buttons from the bands pressing on them. "I need you to head outside to drop this so that the zombies will chase after the sound. When you are ready, remove these pads before dropping them at a spot that can at least get them out for us to shop in peace." He paused in thought before adding "You might want to silence them for a few seconds before removing the pads and be well away when this goes off, because they will be loud. Come back once you are done. Be careful." Dobby saluted as he grabbed the air horns and popped away, with Harry looking about the store to see if there was anything else to grab while he was doing this. He grabbed the shopping cart and quickly took items that would be helpful, quickly filling it with necessities like bottles and camping equipment. He was wondering if he needed another cart when he heard the sounds of the air horns blaring outside, followed shortly by the screeching of the zombies and the mad scramble that made the ground vibrate quickly.
It was with some relief that Dobby returned shortly after his task, a little shaken but not harmed. "That was too close for Dobby! Dobby had to move 2 times to get off the roof!"
"Are you okay?" Harry went to check on him.
"Dobby is fine, Harry Potter Sir. But Dobby really does not want to do that again!" Dobby shuddered while rubbing his arms. "Dobby get the willies!"
"Yeah, let's avoid that." Harry turned to his loaded cart and hummed. Dobby saw what he was looking at and snapped his fingers, making the entire cart disappear. "Thanks, Dobby."
"No problem. Can we get the food and go home?" Dobby had a wide-eyed pleading look.
"Yeah, let's do that. I think we are about to overstay our welcome." Harry took his hand and they popped back to the front of the food store, and went about collecting as much of the items as they could while ignoring those contaminated with blood. Harry really did not want to be around the aisle involving the whole seafood, he had seen what happened on his last food run, and was partially put off fish for a while.
It took a while but between him and Dobby, they were able to secure more than food and water to last them for the month with careful rationing. Harry nodded at all they got and they left the store to check around, but not for long due to the zombies returning from outside, the air horns having done their jobs and likely ran out of the compressed air. They were about to leave when Dobby spotted something and tugged on Harry's pants.
"Master Harry Potter Sir?" Dobby pointed in a certain direction for Harry to look at . There was a pause before the two looked at each other with wide grins on their faces.
A few minutes later, one might be forgiven for thinking even the zombies were flabbergasted at the sight of Harry and Dobby laughing maniacally on a Yamaha V-Star motorcycle that had been repaired and restored for this occasion, driving past the zombies easily and on the road in no time, leaving them in the dust. After a few minutes, they called it quits to avoid more trouble and slowed down enough for Dobby to move them and the motorcycle back to their bolt hole that was a small house with a garage by the side and a few trees nearby. Harry got off the motorcycle and pushed it to the garage while Dobby kept watching around them. Once done, they locked the place down before moving to the basement that had been modified and expanded into a storage space to house all they had brought from other areas. And they had a lot to keep.
"Dobby thinks we have enough for now." The house elf looked around the expanded storage space.
"That is true, we can hunker down for the coming winter." Harry nodded before frowning. "We do need to consider where to go in the future in the event we need to move from this place. We got lucky with this supply run. Some of the areas have been hit hard with no supplies left, and the last couple of runs have the people attacking one another. Those Zees are increasing, and Dumbledore is still trying to find me even with all of this going on."
"Dobby thinks we will think later, now we must eat." At that both their stomachs growled as one. "Dobby will cleanse himself before he prepares dinner, Master Harry Potter will help to check items and update the bucket list." He disappeared on that note and Harry hummed at that.
"Yeah, I can definitely scratch one item off the list." Harry went to check on the items they had brought back from the store and moved those that needed a good rinsing before they could be consumed, then went to the cordoned off part of the room meant for decontamination. After stripping off and rinsing off his body with soap while checking his body for cuts or bites, he got himself dried off with air runes and put on a fresh set of clothes before moving into the main house where he could hear Dobby cooking up a storm. Harry went to his room that held a few oddities from his time at Hogwarts and a large map on the wall with pinned notes to show where certain places he had been and explored. By the table lay a book that had the page opened for him to look through and strike off the entry "Riding a motorcycle", before closing the book with a smile and moving back outside, the title being shown on the cover.
"Harry's Bucket List Before Becoming An Inferi."
Author's Notes:
As you may be able to tell, this was inspired by the manga and recent anime adaptation "Zombie 100", on the idea of the overworked MC being free to do whatever he wanted and trying to come up with 100 things to do before becoming a zombie. I know there are a few stories out there with Harry in a zombie situation, but most are crossovers with the walking dead, or standalone stories involving a screwed up ritual that caused the dead to rise and be some version of Inferi that are similar to those of movies.
I thought Harry's character and position was a little similar to Akira in that he was forced to do all the shit in the books, and when you consider Dumbledore as the bad guy trying to hold all the bad things that happened over his head, it sort of fits, so this is how it came out. This is set around the summer before 5th year, but it can be set for the summer before 6th year when Harry has enough of all the shit in his life.
I am also playing with the idea of a more serious zombie AU idea, don't know when it will come out so look forward to it!
