A pair of eyes blinked a few times with the owner lightly groaning in confused slumber, before the eyes went wide and the owner gasped while getting up from the bed he was on. The young boy looked around him in confusion, noting the different clothes he had on and the lack of pain he normally felt after Vernon's "discipline", and then the decor around him.
For one, the walls appeared to be made of wood frames and paper with the odd patterns of trees and plants. He was lying on what was a thick and very soft mattress on the floor, said floor being like the one from his dream with the strange man and woman. The sounds of chimes drew his attention to the right, and he let out a startled gasp at the picturesque backyard that had a couple of large trees with flowers in full bloom, neatly trimmed bushes with some purple and red flowers popping out in a spiral arrangement. But the main attraction was the one tree that had pink flowers in full bloom and had petals floating about in the wind over the big pond that appeared to be made of glass instead of water with how clear it was reflecting the tree, bushes and the sky.
One thing was certain. This was not the Cupboard beneath the Stairs, or Privet Drive for that matter.
His ears caught shuffling sounds from the other side before one of the walls moved to reveal a woman with her dark hair tied in a bun and dressed in a manner similar to the pretty lady from before but in light pink and black instead, opening the apparent door while squatting down on her knees. "Ah, you are awake." Harry raised the blanket to cover the lower part of his face while huddling down in the bed.
"Be at peace, young one. You are safe." The woman raised a hand to assure him.
"Where am I?" Harry asked nervously, noting her accent was different from his or his relatives.
"You are currently in the Kuchiki Estate, Japan." The woman answered with the last bit tagged on to let the boy know. That definitely got his attention as the blanket lowered to show his surprised expression.
"Japan?" He had heard a little of the country through Vernon's complaints about the country when he went abroad for work or Petunia's complaints about the food, but he read more of it from the library while getting away from Dudley. It was one of those countries that he had fantasised about going to get away from the Dursleys since it sounded so different from Britain.
"Yes, dear." The woman smiled at his tone. "Would you like some breakfast to eat, young one?" At that query, Harry's stomach growled loudly in agreement. "Oh dear, someone is very hungry." She let out a light giggle at his red face while he glared at his stomach quite adorably in her private opinion. "I will bring your breakfast, please relax for now." She nodded and closed the door before he could reply. Harry just stared at the door before looking back out of the garden with his mind on many things, chief among them being that all of this was not some weird dream he was hallucinating and that he would wake up in the cupboard.
"It is not, my dear."
Harry turned his head so quickly that he winced at the light pop his neck made at that. He reached to rub his neck only for a gentle hand to rub it, drawing his attention to the woman who appeared before him in a dream, but now dressed in a different set of robes and covered up. "Hello, Harry-kun."
"Oh, the pretty lady." Harry blushed at the touch and what he said, but the woman let out a soft chuckle as she rubbed his neck gently.
"I think we need to give you some nicknames to at least address us when we are outside, until you are able to call out our real names." The female spirit hummed while Harry leaned into the touch. "Let me try to say my name again, then we decide." Harry opened his eyes and listened closely, his nose twitching as he tried to decipher what she said. His frown showed that her efforts were still not answered.
"I think I heard a 'Kyo'?" Harry tilted his head. The female spirit hummed at that.
"That is a good enough nickname for me. Now we just need to think of one for my other companion." She turned to face the male spirit that appeared like a ghost, making Harry blinked widely at the sudden appearance. "Mind saying your name?" The man hummed but complied with her wishes while Harry tried to listen to the words.
"I think I heard a 'Musa'?" The man closed his eyes at that thoughtfully.
"That would do for now." The man spoke while turning his head. At that moment, the door opened to show the woman from earlier with a tray of food prepared by her side, not once blinking an eye at the appearance of the other two near Harry.
"Ah, you are here as well, that is fortunate. Master Kuchiki is hoping to meet the young master with the both of you." The woman moved the tray of food towards Harry, with the boy so distracted by the movements and the food that he did not see the spirits watching her every move carefully. "Do enjoy your breakfast." The woman moved back behind the door and with a bow of her head, closed the partition door.
"Erm, how do I eat?" Harry blinked at the pair of sticks and a small spoon with more depth.
"These are chopsticks." The now named Kyo demonstrated by deftly picking up the sticks and positioning as such. Harry tried to copy her movements with limited success, and was able to feed himself albeit messily, with Kyo fussing over him and cleaning his mouth. Between them, Harry was able to enjoy the food a little, a fresh change from his time with the Dursleys where he was made to cook the food and watched them eat while he had to settle for scraps. He was distracted while drinking the soup, and so failed to see the look pass between the two spirits having heard his thoughts.
Like clockwork, the moment he finished his meal, the lady servant appeared to take the tray away. This time though, there was another woman dressed in similar clothes to ask if Harry was able to meet this Byakuya person. Harry looked to the two who had gotten him out of the Dursleys for assurance, before looking back to the woman and nodding his head shyly. And with that agreement, Harry got out of bed and was given some fresh clothes in the form of some robes that were plain grey yet more comfortable than anything else he had worn. He needed a little help from the others to put them on, and they left the room where Harry gaped at the expense of the property they were and the garden that appeared to have come alive from a painting. It looked so perfect that Harry had to be gently guided by Kyo to move along, while the staff they passed bowed to them and smiled at his expression, likely knowing what he was thinking. Harry was awkwardly returning the bow, making the few women they passed giggle at his actions.
They arrived shortly outside of a small building attached to the main building made out of wood, and their guide lightly knocked on the door before announcing herself.
"Enter." A male voice answered the call and the servant lightly gripped the edge of the door and slid it open to one side while bowing her head, giving Harry and the two spirits room to come inside, although Harry had to be gently prodded to go in due to his nervousness and the sight of the room inside. It was an open space with open cupboards that had books and scrolls placed on them with small pots of plants to liven up the area. At the far end of the room, a man was seated behind a large wood table that smelt of cedar and some other wood that had Harry instinctively knowing his uncle would have loved to have to show off to others. The man was also someone that Petunia would possibly wish to be talking with in secret with his youthful looks sharpened by a strict expression, and long hair that had been tied into a ponytail and secured with white ornamental clips clipped on both sides of his hair. He was dressed in a similar manner as Harry but it certainly looked more regal and subconsciously had Harry straightening himself to not make a mistake.
"Please, take a seat." The man motioned with his hand at the chairs provided while speaking in a deep voice. The spirits guided Harry to the middle chair before sitting by his sides, Harry feeling very awkward being at the center of attention. "My name is Kuchiki Byakuya. In Britain, the name would be reversed." The man started speaking while maintaining his gaze on Harry. "Do you remember your name, child?" Harry almost faltered when he felt a presence inside him that seemed soothing, and somehow it reminded him of Kyo. A quick glance had the woman spirit nodding at Harry who took a breath before answering.
"My name is Harry Potter, sir." Harry spoke softly but firmly, resisting the urge to fidget. Byakuya dipped his head in that.
"You have given us quite a scare, Potter-san. You and your companions suddenly appeared on our compound, and you were so heavily injured that we had to put you into suspended animation to heal you." He paused at his confused and slightly worried expression. "You were knocked out for a month because of all the injuries on you."
A full month?!
Harry could barely register those words before a calming hand on his back forced his thoughts back and he took a few deep breaths to contain the shock and panic.
"Yes, I understand it is quite the shock to know you have been out so long." Byakuya spoke calmly. "It was the only way to ensure that your body could be healed properly and remove the blocks on your core."
"What do you mean by blocks?" Harry asked after calming himself. The man studied him briefly before speaking.
"Before I answer, I must ask a question." Byakuya looked him in the eye before continuing. "What do you know about magic?"
~ooOOoo~
"HOW DID THIS HAPPEN!"
The table shook violently enough to have the loose items drop off the table as the man glared at Dumbledore. "You said that he was well taken care of in that area. You said that he would be protected from anyone seeking harm."
"I did. And I had no reason to believe that the house would be attacked, James." Dumbledore answered tiredly but firmly, not appreciating the younger man's tone towards him.
"Amelia would say otherwise." James Potter answered while straightening his back. "She was quite informative on what had happened over there, and it didn't take her long to know that the Dursleys are related to us through Lily." His eyes narrowed further. "She also has the evidence to show that Harry had been heavily abused, something that you have constantly given false assurances to us that would not happen with Petunia and how being family would not hurt Harry."
"I did not know."
"Stuff it!" James interrupted him with a glare. "Your spy Arabella Figg was found on the scene and they had interrogated her quite thoroughly about how she had reported to you about Harry's upbringing and how you would come to check on him in the cover of the night. She was also quite unrepentant about the whole matter, she was practically gleeful about him getting abused and even fudged the reports to keep you from healing Harry at times. You knew she hates people having magic since she is a Squib, and she was only helping you since she owes you favours, but that does not mean she cannot be creative with her orders. They have extracted all her memories about Harry, and you cannot act as ignorant as people would believe."
Dumbledore really wanted to refute that but if the Aurors were that thorough with the investigations, odds were good that the Potters would know of some of the things going on in the house. And as much as he would love to obliviate James of the details right now, he knew that man would have planned for something and people would be suspicious of the lack of memories or any behavioural changes. His spectacles were picking up protection spells around James that were not there previously, and with those twitching fingers, James was likely hoping for a reason, any reason, to start hexing first and ask questions later.
"Clearly you have made up your mind on this. So what are you thinking?" Dumbledore placed his hands together on his lap.
"Just to hand you this." James reached into his pocket and pulled out two pieces of parchment to place on the table. "Lily and I have resigned from the Order of the Phoenix, and you will not be allowed into our manor. We will also make it clear that our alliance is strictly professional when it comes to matters of the Wizengamot." James took a breath to contain himself. "Be grateful I am the one meeting you, because Lily is currently in a state that the mere sight of you would trigger a response from her in the form of hexing."
"James, you cannot be serious." Dumbledore was genuinely shocked by that declaration, and not a little frightened at the prospect it brought to the table. The Potters were his greatest hand to deal with the Wizengamot and the dark faction. Much of his current political hold over the Wizengamot was thanks to his current relations with the Potters, and like sharks smelling blood in the water, if his opponents knew of the issue, they would do everything to tear down his influence. Lucius Malfoy for one would certainly push for an investigation if only to have some leverage over them.
"I am serious. Deadly serious." The look in his eyes certainly stated that. "Your assurances have cost my family a son that should have been with us, a brother to my children, and an heir to my bloodline. Your constant warnings and playing on our fears have made us give him up to the Dursleys in hopes of keeping him safe, yet when we have Rose and Iris living with us, the point is moot to keep him away." James took another breath to control his rising temper. "And the sad part of this, you clearly have designs that we do not know of, designs involving Harry and Charlie. Not anymore. Good day." Before Albus could interject or do anything for the matter, the Auror managed to move to the fireplace in one large step and left the office through the Floo without leaving his back unwatched, his eyes kept on Dumbledore at all times and the last thing he saw before the flames turned red to signify the disconnection.
"Curses." Dumbledore took off his spectacles and placed them on the table harder than required, no longer needing Occlumnecy to keep the frustration showing from his face. This was not what he needed at the moment, especially with the upcoming Ministry election since Madam Bagnold recently resigned on account of both her health and her waning popularity due to some of her policies during the war and after it. The list of candidates were not very promising, and he needed someone who he could "advise" to ensure the status quo was maintained to keep his hold over Britain. That would remove a few of the Light candidates and certainly all of those from the Dark Faction, which left three neutrals and none were good in his opinion.
This incident though was threatening to derail his plans. Not many remembered about Harry Potter after that night, but Amelia Bones was one of them and she had been trying to find him. Knowing what had happened from the investigations got her and her chosen Aurors on a warpath, and he just knew that the recently promoted gossip columnist Rita Skeeter was going to find out sooner rather than later. Being the first child meant he was the primary heir to the Potters, and that would mean a lot of people would have choice words at the Potters and him for their supposed idea of protection, especially since it was Dumbledore who had "encouraged" the fears and paranoia to give up Harry to focus on Charlie.
It was his plan to get Harry to look up to him when it was time to come to Hogwarts would have ensured his support and brought in the Potter family further into his net. But with the muggles abusing him and his spy unrepentantly doing her part to stamp out the magic, his opponents from the Dark and possibly Neutral Factions would certainly use this as an example to stamp out muggles and Squibs. The Light Faction would also be affected negatively, and this was something he could not afford to happen.
His original plan may still be salvageable though to some extent. If Harry Potter was not found soon, odds were high that he would be declared dead and Charlie would be made the heir, something that plenty had assumed be his right to begin with. All Dumbledore had to do was to try and regain the Potter's trust to get it done.
The only thing that could jeopardise that?
Was Harry Potter still alive?
And if so, where was he?
Author's Notes:
A part of me is thinking of writing up a full story from this set of ideas, but I do not know which one to do, and whether I should do cross-post it with AO3. I will go through the story ideas I have and see which one based on the comments, and likely put up a poll to let you guys decide which one. For now, I am still focusing on my other stories.
My AO3 is rwby1989, and currently this series is the only cross-posting. The AO3 is more of an experiment for other ideas that are too spicy for this site, and one MHA story. Depending on situations, I may bring the RWBY stories over there as well in the near future.
Until then, stay safe out there.
