As the evening grew closer, the members of the Vanguard Action Squad were called to the main area of the hideout so that Kurogiri could transport them to the training camp they were supposed to attack. One by one, they were transported to a cliff overlooking the surrounding woods around the camp. It was almost peaceful, were it not for the gravity of the task they were about to perform. Soon enough, this peaceful ambiance would be shattered once Kurogiri finished transporting everyone to the camp.
While they waited for the last three members of their squad to arrive, Toga fidgeted with her new support item. She had gotten it from Giran just before they left for their mission and was lamenting the fact that it didn't look cute on her, but as soon as she laid eyes on Yuka, her demeanor quickly changed as she skipped over to her cheerfully.
"Hey Mia!" she cooed. "Look! We're matching now!"
They were both wearing masks that covered the lower part of their faces, but with very different uses. Yuka stared at her for a moment as Himiko skipped around her joyfully. After a few seconds, she finally answered her with a slow nod.
"We do," she answered simply.
"I'm so glad!" Himiko said as a slight blush crept up her cheeks.
"Are you two best friends now or something?" Dabi said to them from where he stood at the edge of the cliff.
Yuka's eyes followed him there while Toga quickly grabbed hold of her arm to pull her towards her possessively.
"You bet! I bet you're jealous, huh Dabi?" Himiko proclaimed as she looked up lovingly at Yuka.
"As if," Dabi replied as he rolled his eyes. "Why would I want to be friends with any of you?"
Before any of them could answer, Magne suddenly made her appearance along with Spinner and Moonfish.
"Hi darlings! Sorry to keep you waiting," she said as she approached them.
"Get to work... get to work..." Moonfish chanted as he shuffled his way towards them.
"That makes seven of us," Dabi noted.
Another man had suddenly joined them earlier when they first arrived. He was wearing a mask and a cloak, but Shigaraki had informed them that his villain name was Muscular. Yuka had seen him on the news a while back when he had killed a pair of pro heroes. He seemed like a formidable opponent, one that she wouldn't have wanted to cross paths with unless they were fighting on the same side.
"I don't care!" he said impatiently. "Just let me loose! I'm too pumped up to stand by..."
She was about to say something when Dabi cut in at the last second.
"Just shut your mouth you crazy bastard..." he snapped at him. "We still have three more people to wait for."
Yuka looked towards Dabi in astonishment. He had taken the words right out of her mouth which was surprising to her considering how wild he had been during their first mission together. As she continued to stare at him with surprise in her eyes, Dabi turned towards the training camp and the forest below the cliff.
"The League of Villains made a mistake going after them with a bunch of random thugs at the U.S.J. Better to use a small group of elites to get the job done," he proclaimed as a smile crept across his lips. "The first thing we have to do is take away their sense of peace... and show them that their lives rest in our hands."
Dabi seemed a lot more serious than the last time they were on a mission together. For once, the two of them were in agreement. Maybe it was the importance of their mission that got him so focused or the fact that they were finally going to be able to let loose. Either way, Yuka had to admit that she didn't dislike this side of him.
"Does everyone remember their part of the plan?" she asked in a flat tone.
"I'm going to be looking for people to stab!" Himiko said cheerfully, taking her knife out at the same time.
"That's not what you're here for, psycho," Dabi said with a groan. "You're supposed to get blood from as many people as you can."
"There's no reason I can't do both!"
He let out a long sigh. "Fine. Do what you want. Just make sure you get the blood, Toga. What about you, Smoke Machine?"
Yuka narrowed her eyes at him. "It's Miasma... and I'll be going into the woods to neutralize as many students as I can using my quirk. Twice is going to support me using one of his clones so that I can spread my toxic gas more efficiently."
"Don't rely on his clone too much should you run into trouble. They can't take as much damage as we can before breaking."
"I'm aware. Twice told me..."
"Good, then this should be fairly easy for us. Compress is going to be the one looking for Bakugou, but should any of you run into him, bring him back alive, will you? I would hate to have to listen to that spoiled brat whine about us killing his target..."
They all agreed to what he asked and soon, the rest of the squad arrived. They split up to begin their assault on the training camp. Yuka left with Dabi and Twice towards the edge of the forest. She would start off from there and meet up with the rest of the Vanguard Action Squad at the rendez-vous point once Bakugou was captured.
"Aw man! This is going to be awesome!/We should stay methodical about this," Twice said to them.
"Agreed," Yuka answered calmly. "We know for a fact there are pro heroes with them, so we'll have to be careful around them if and when they show up."
"Yeah yeah I'll deal with the pros," Dabi said nonchalantly. "Or more likely Twice will deal with them."
"Leave it to me!/Really man?!" Twice answered in his two usual voices.
"This may not count for much," Yuka started to say as she unsheathed her weapon slowly. "But I'm counting on you two to do your best."
"That's what I always do, sweetheart," Dabi answered with an amused smile, prompting her to roll her eyes at him for calling her that.
"Anything for you, sweet cheeks!" Twice answered as well.
Yuka shook her head disapprovingly before starting to run towards the center of the forest. Once she left, she could smell the smoke rising from behind her as Dabi's flames started to consume the forest around her. Once she was cleared of the inferno, she headed straight for the area where the students would be conducting their Test of Courage. A few moments later, she noticed a shadow following her. Upon closer inspection, she realized that it was her clone following her towards their destination. Twice must have created it just as she was leaving for the camp. With another one of herself on the battlefield, she would be able to spread her poison gas in a wider area and affect more people.
Once they got close, the two Yukas went to opposite sides of the area where the Test of Courage was taking place. Once they were in place, they both simultaneously started producing poisonous gas thanks to their shared quirk. Yuka concentrated her attention on her breathing, taking deep, long breaths to maximize the output of her quirk. The bigger the breath, the more gas she could pump into the air. She had been practicing her whole life to increase the capacity of her lungs and make them more efficient at using her quirk. Once the air was thick with gas, she started to hear the students freaking out in the distance. Some found themselves cut off from their friends because of the gas and some were slowly succumbing to its effects. As she wandered into the gas filled forest, she noticed a pair of female students passed out on the ground with gas masks on. She scowled as she realized that someone had brought masks with them. No matter, she had brought her sword for that exact reason. She continued to walk slowly through the woods, breathing more gas into the air once in a while when she felt it growing thinner around her. She did her best to maintain control of her breathing, fighting hard against the urge to cough as she used her quirk to fill the air with toxic fumes. While her clone made it so that she wouldn't have to manually fill the entire area with gas, she still had to pump new gas continuously since there was wind blowing through the trees once in a while.
There was a surprisingly low number of students that were knocked unconscious by her gas. Unsurprisingly, though, if they had masks with them, it meant that they could move through it without being affected. Regardless, she kept her cool and continued to press on cautiously, keeping an eye on her surroundings as she made her way through the forest. Eventually, she started to hear footsteps coming her way, so she hid behind a large tree. A pair of students ran by; a red-headed girl and a boy with wild silver hair and thick eyelashes. Yuka recognized the boy from the Sports Festival. He was the one who could turn his skin into metal. They were both wearing the same masks as the two girls she had found earlier.
"Wait! Tetsutetsu!" the girl called out to her friend. "Mandalay didn't say anything about the gas in her means the gas isn't spreading to where she's broadcasting."
Yuka surmised that they had received a telepathic message from Mandalay of the Wild Wild Pussycats. It seemed as though their targets were a lot more resourceful than they had initially anticipated. This didn't bother her at all, though. What bothered her the most were the masks they were wearing. Even though they could only filter a certain amount of gas, they could completely negate the effects of her quirk for a certain period of time.
"The gas hasn't been blown away by the wind yet," the girl continued. "And look, the gas is definitely thicker around here than where we just came from."
"Okay... So what?" her friend replied.
"That means that whatever's creating it must still be in the area, the villain that's responsible for this toxic miasma."
"Oh I get it! Oh man Kendo you're so amazingly smart!"
"I figured you'd miss the signs... which is why I came with you." She sighed exasperatingly, before getting straight back to business. "Okay, so the closer we get to the source of the gas, the thicker the poison will be. There's a limit to how much gas these things can filter, so the denser the gas, the shorter the functioning time. That means..."
"We follow the gas and we punch whoever's causing it!" Tetsutetsu yelled enthusiastically.
Yuka was now caught in a dilemma. If she stopped producing gas, she could slip away from them, but the poison could grow too thin as the wind would start clearing it out. On the other hand, she could produce more gas in order to max out their masks capacity and render them unconscious that way. Either scenario had its drawbacks, but the choice seemed clear to her. She hadn't come here to run around a bunch of wannabe heroes as the sword clutched in her hand could attest to, so she released a long, concentrated breath of gas before disappearing into the shadows.
The two students followed where the gas had suddenly grown denser, but found nothing. Before they had time to react, Yuka lept from a tree and delivered a downward slash towards them. Surprisingly, Tetsutetsu reacted quick enough with his quirk and parried her attack, but not before her blade slashed open the mask he was wearing, splitting it in two. He then put his hands to his mouth and nose to help him hold his breath.
"Impressive," Yuka said in a dull tone. "I wasn't expecting you to react so quickly. But I wonder... how long can you hold your breath while fighting me at the same time?"
She went to deliver another attack with her katana but was quickly intercepted by Kendo coming to Tetsutetsu's aid. Yuka was caught off guard by the gigantification of her fist as she enlarged it at the very last second. Her punch sent her flying against the tree she had gotten down from at the start of the fight but she wasn't about to let her land a second hit on her. As Kendo's other fist went straight for her head, Yuka ducked and slashed at her abdomen, but Kendo was surprisingly nimble despite her large hands. She used the hand she had punched her with to propel herself into the air. Meanwhile, Tetsutetsu came in and charged at Yuka, forcing her to roll away from him to avoid his attack. Instead of punching her, he punched a hole in the tree behind her. Yuka steeled herself as Kendo prepared for another attack, but luckily, she was intercepted by Yuka's clone who had just arrived from the area she had been pumping gas into a few moments earlier.
"Good, now we're evenly matched," Yuka said as she turned towards Tetsutetsu.
He was still desperately holding on to his breath. Yuka's eyes suddenly started to glow a bright shade of violet as she breathed more gas into the air. She wanted to overwhelm him with her quirk while she slashed at him with her sword. With his hardening in effect, she couldn't hope to pierce his skin with her blade, but if she could tire him out and force him to gasp out for air, he would have to breathe in the gas and would immediately fall unconscious.
She started to deliver a series of attacks directed at him to open up his guard. Unfortunately, his guard was a lot harder to break than she had thought and he was a lot more endurant than she had anticipated. She tried kicking him in the stomach, but his metal skin made him completely impervious to her attacks. Her only chance of winning against him was his body's need to breathe in oxygen and he seemed on the verge of breaking when she started to deliver more and more slashes with her katana, leaving scuff marks on his iron skin.
"Give up now!" she shouted as her eyes glowed with fury.
Eventually, his body started to fail him as he fell to one knee. His vision was getting blurry and Yuka walked over to him calmly. His hands were back on his face, forcing his nose and mouth shut so that he wouldn't breathe in any of the toxic fumes in the air. Yuka pressed the tip of her sword to his chin, lifting his head up with it as she stared down at him.
"I expected a lot better from a couple of U.A. students," she said in a disdainful tone. "What good is it to be a part of the fabled hero course if you can't even take down one single villain?"
He was about to let go of his breath when suddenly, Yuka was caught off balance by a sudden change in the wind. She turned around to see that her clone had been smashed by Kendo's attacks and that she was now waving her gas away using her massive hands.
"What do you think you're doing?!" Yuka shouted as she charged towards her with fury in her eyes.
"Saving my classmate!" Kendo replied proudly.
Yuka leapt into the air with incredible speed, ready to slash down at Kendo when suddenly she clapped her gigantic hands together, creating a shockwave that propelled her backwards. This didn't deter her for much long as the dark haired woman began to charge at her once again with her sword raised. Since she had been too focused on Kendo, Yuka didn't notice that Tetsutetsu had recovered and was now intercepting her attack. Before she had time to lower her weapon, he headbutted her in the face, completely shattering the mask she wore on the lower half of her face. This sent her reeling as there was still some poisonous gas in the air. She quickly caught her breath, but her lungs had still managed to suck in some of the miasma and she could feel the poison start to affect her.
"Damn it..." she groaned as she slinked back into the darkness, forced to run away now that her mask was completely destroyed.
Fortunately, Kendo and Tetsutetsu didn't follow her into the woods, so she was free to recover from the effects of her gas and the attack she had sustained from Tetsutetsu. She had been producing oxygen in her lungs while she navigated through the gas, but with such a heavy usage of her quirk, she quickly felt the effects of the aftershock as she exploded into a fit of coughing. She fell to her knees, coughing up blood as she clutched her chest with her hand. Without her mask, she couldn't administer her lung medication as efficiently, but she still needed to try. If not, she would probably fall unconscious and be captured and she was not about to be apprehended on her first real mission. So, with the help of her sword, she slashed open the capsule and quickly shoved it into her mouth to breathe in the medicated powder inside. She breathed in deep as the medication filled her lungs and helped her calm her cough down sufficiently enough so that she could do the rest on her own. She would probably have to take another one once she got back to the hideout, but for now, she could meet back at the rendez-vous point with the others.
Speaking of which, shortly after, she received a message from Compress informing them that he had secured their target. Yuka quickly made her way back to the rendez-vous point, arriving a few minutes later only to find that Mr. Compress had been subdued by a couple of students from Class 1-A. She gripped her sword tightly as the students tried to make a run for the woods. She quickly intercepted them, lifting her sword above her head, ready to slash at them.
"End of the line," she said in a cold voice.
Her sword was blocked though by one of the student's quirk. He had erected a huge wall of ice between her and them and she completely lost track of them. As she tried to go around the wall, she saw that their escape had been cut off by none other than Kurogiri, who manifested himself as a huge mass of darkness with bright yellow eyes.
"It's been five minutes since the signal," he said to them. "Let's go, Dabi."
A portal suddenly appeared next to her. As much as she wanted to go after those students, in her weakened state, it was wiser for her to pull back, but before she could enter the portal, she wanted to make sure Dabi and Compress were safe to do so.
"Hold on... We're not leaving without the kid," Dabi said as he looked back at the three students.
"Don't worry," Compress replied slyly. "They were so impressed by themselves for rooting through my pockets that I thought I'd let them gloat." He turned towards the three students. "But allow me to explain a basic tenet of magic..." He removed his mask, revealing his face underneath. "If I'm flaunting something shiny, it's because there's something I don't want you to see."
He opened his mouth to stick out his tongue, revealing three colorful marbles. The three boys stared in shock as the villain snapped his fingers and made the three marbles they had in their possession turn into chunks of ice.
"A little bit of misdirection, forgive me," Compress gloated as he slowly slipped into the warp gate behind him. "I do so adore a twist ending..."
"You can't do this!" Izuku cried out loudly as they started to charge at them.
Mr. Compress bowed down as he started to disappear. "One last bow, before the curtain falls..."
Yuka was relieved to see that Compress had outdone himself and left through her portal to rejoin with the rest of her companions. She appeared on the other side, in the bar of their hideout. Toga, Twice, Spinner and Magne had all made it to the hideout while Compress and Dabi still hadn't gone through the portal yet. Yuka was starting to think that she had passed through her portal prematurely when they both came through the same portal with Bakugou in their custody.
"What happened to the other two?" she asked Compress, who seemed incredibly peeved that his performance didn't pan out in the end.
"A last minute trick completely ruined my finale!" Mr. Compress complained loudly. It also seemed like she wasn't the only one to have her mask blown to bits.
"Well, at least we got our target," she said as she looked down at Bakugou.
"Who are you calling a target, you dumb whore?!" he shouted at her loudly. So loud in fact that it almost burst her eardrums.
"Compress, can you trap him in one of your marbles so that we don't have to hear him screaming?"
"A wise decision, my dear."
With an elegant flourish, he returned Bakugou to his marble. They were then joined by Shigaraki, who had just stepped into the bar area.
"From the sound of things, I can tell that your mission was a success," he said with a satisfied grin on his lips.
"Yes, we've successfully captured Katsuki Bakugou from under U.A.'s nose," Compress announced proudly as he showed him the marble with Bakugou inside.
"Good, excellent even. You've impressed me."
"Muscular and Moonfish were defeated by them," Dabi said as he leaned against a wall.
Shigaraki's smile faded slightly. "That's... unfortunate, but at least, we've got what we came to get. Now, help me set up a seat for our 'guest'... I'm sure he'd prefer more comfortable accommodations during his stay with us."
