Hello Readers: And welcome to my re-write of The Caseys. Though, I have every intention of trying to make this story different than the previous version; especially when it comes to (a) how it starts, and (b) just who is involved in this story. And because I know the One Chicago fans somewhat well, I believe that you guys will enjoy the return of a fan favorite character we barely got to know.
Note: I've decided to push back the timeline when it comes to when Gabby came back. Rather than coming back in September, she'll be returning in late October so that she's further along in the pregnancy…which makes things safer. Hope you like the new story.
Chapter 1
October 26, 2018 – Firehouse 51, Chicago
It was getting late in the night of October 26th, which meant that things normally calmed down around this time of the night, which was perfect for what Matthew Casey needed to do this evening: take some time to think and just relax, which is precisely what he was in the midst of doing at the moment as he sat near the garage door and smoked a cigar. And while his original intent was to do it alone, it turned out that wasn't going to happen for one simple reason: his best friend decided that he didn't want to let him sit alone when he clearly wasn't acting like himself right now; as evidenced by the reckless act which he did yesterday in almost killing himself, which was precisely why Andrew "Andy" Darden felt like he needed to talk to his best friend. To see whether he was okay. "So, this is where you're hiding out from the world right now." Turning his head when he heard Andy, Matt shook his head. After all, he should've known that somebody was bound to find him. "How did I know that either you or Severide would try and come find me out here?"
Snickering as he set his chair down next to Matt's chair this evening, Andy proceeded to sit down next to him so that they can talk man-to-man, friend-to-friend, and husband-to-husband. After all, he was the only other guy Matt's age who was married. "Well, maybe not Severide." Turning his head, Matt was confused. "I hate to defend him against you, but why you putting down our best friend? I mean, he'd come talk to me if someone was up." Andy snickered. "Kidd's in his bed right now." Matt sighed when he heard Andy say that, as that was something else he missed about his wife: when she (sometimes) snuck into his office late at night, only to cuddle up to him before her next call. She loved sleeping in the same bed as him, regardless of where that bed was. "Yeah, that was one of the reasons I'm out here. Not a sight that I really want to look at right now." Andy agreed, as he knew that was the case. "I know. But listen, I really need to talk to you. Just as friends, Case. Not as your subordinate, but as your best friend. Can you do that?"
Matt agreed, as that most certainly is something that he can do for Andy. "Andy, you know full well that you aren't just my best friend. You're my brother. Heaven knows that you've saved my life countless times over the years." Andy agreed with Matt. "Does that mean that I get some of that inheritance you got, considering I'm your brother?" Matt laughed when Andy said that, well aware of just what inheritance Andy was talking about: his recent $3.9 Billion inheritance from his grandparents. "Yeah, I'm not ready to talk about that. And can you keep it down? The entire firehouse doesn't need to know, man! I only told you because I needed someone to talk about it with, and I thought that you could be discreet. Yet, you've almost slipped up a couple times." Andy agreed, well aware that was the case. "And while it may seem that I'm all happy and all smiles over the fact that I theoretically don't need to work anymore, that isn't the case. Rather, I'm mad as hell over the fact that I just learned about this now." Andy was shocked when he heard Matt say that.
After all, he'd die to have this type of security when it came to his finances; especially when college is so expensive now. "You're mad that you're rich? Matt, I would kill to have this type of money for me, Heather, and the boys. I mean, the possibilities that Ben and Griffin could have. They wouldn't have to worry about picking a school or a career based on what we can afford and could instead have their dream job by learning at their dream school. If anything, you should feel lucky that you're going to be able to provide that sense of security and those chances that every kid could only dream of to your future children." Matt sighed as he turned his head and looked at his friend. "Andy. They're my dad's parents. They thought about me when they made their wills. They thought about me in death, but not in life?" Andy sighed, as he knew precisely what Matt was talking about. "So, you can care enough about me to not let me live in poverty, but not enough to make sure that your son doesn't molest me? And rape my mom?"
Andy gulped, as he knew that he stepped right into that one. "Oh, and make me have to live without my mom for a while? Make her have to go to jail, because you couldn't step up and control your son? Hell, the lawyer she got was so inept. Had I known about this…I probably could've got her a lawyer that could've gotten her half the time she was sentenced to." Andy sighed. "Do you really think that your dad's parents would've let you do that?" Matt sighed as he turned his head. "Maybe they didn't know, Matt. I hate to tell you this, but…it's not out of the realm of possibility. I mean, I hate to even compare you to the Menendez brothers, but…" Matt sighed, as that was something he knew about as well. Sometimes, family doesn't know. "Yeah, I know. I know. It's something you see all the time in the news. That people don't know that people try and hide the truth. Plus, that was the 90s. Things are different now." Andy agreed, as it most certainly is a different age. An age where a rapist can also be President of the United States.
Not that he wanted him there. "I mean, look who's in the White House right now; a guy who's associated with Jeffrey Epstein." Matt agreed with his friend, well aware that was the case. "Can't wait to vote in November to get the House and Senate in Democratic hands. Then, they need to impeach the mother fucker." Andy laughed as he agreed with his friend, well aware that was the case. "That, they most certainly do. However, you also need to talk to me Matt. I hate to ask you this but, what was yesterday? And don't act all dumb and everything. You know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. What the hell happened?" Matt sighed when Andy asked him what happened, as he had no idea what really happened. "Matt, if you're having health problems, then you need to let me know. I hate to tell you this, but we were all freaking out. Me and Kelly were scared. The entire house was scared. Think about how Gabby would've felt had she been here." Matt sighed, agreeing with his friend. "How is she, by the way?" Matt sighed.
After all, he hasn't spoken to her much. Well, other than today. "I spoke to her today, she seemed good. I saw her at the end of July." Andy was surprised when he heard Matt say that. "And I'm just learning this now, why? I would've come to say hi. I would've spoken to her on your behalf." Matt shook his head, as he didn't mean here in Chicago. "Remember that furlough I took for a week at the end of July? Maybe a week-and-a-half?" Andy agreed, well aware of that furlough he took. "I was in Puerto Rico. Went to go see Gabby so that I could be with her and just take some time. We spoke and figured some stuff out." Andy agreed, glad that was the case. "Well, I'm happy about that. But, does that include telling her about the change in your life? Maybe that could entice her to come back?" Matt sighed, as that was the last thing he was going to do: entice his wife to come back just because he was wealthy. "Andy, that's the last thing I'm going to do. Gabby loves me for who I am, not because of my wealth. I want to keep it that way."
Andy agreed, well aware that was the case. After all, he knew full well that his friend wasn't going to change, just because his fortunes have. He was going to be the same old Matt he's known for the longest time, which is something he's proud of. "Matt, I already know that. I know that you aren't going to change, and I'm sure that Gabby's feelings for you won't change either. Dude, you need to remember that her feelings for you have been consistent since before you were together. She wanted you, even when you were with Hallie." Matt snickered, well aware that was the case. "I still regret not dumping her right around Otis' death. We weren't together at the time, and I was more than ready to leave her; but, like the drug she was for me at the time and me needing someone to be attached to…I decided to stay with her, which was the worst thing I could've ever done." Andy agreed. "And then, you chose her over Gabby again when she came back. Oh, I remember that." Matt agreed with Andy and sighed, as that was a crazy time.
And even though he was married to Gabby now, he still couldn't believe that it's already been five years. "As much as I love Gabby, I still can't believe that it's been five years since she's gone." Andy agreed, well aware that was the case. "Hey, at least you got someone better now in Gabby. Speaking of which, I've seen that you're worrying more of late. You worrying about her now?" Matt nodded. "I just got off the phone with her again. And this time around, there was just something different. The way we were talking. It was different and it made me wonder…" Sighing, Matt looked down. "Whether this is a sign that my marriage is about to end." Looking at his best friend when he heard him say that, Andy felt horrible as that was the last thing he wanted to hear: that his friend was worried that his marriage was over. "Matt, say it ain't so." Coming out to join his other best friends after seeing them outside while going to the washroom, Kelly was confused as he overheard what Andy said. "What are you talking about out here?"
Turning their heads to look at Kelly when he came out to join them, Matt and Andy both smiled due to the fact that things were always so much better when they were together as a trio; though, the smiles soon faded as Andy answered Kelly's question. "Matt spoke to Gabby yesterday." Kelly was surprised as he moved his chair close to his other friends, though he ended up smiling. "Well, that's good news. She coming back?" Matt shrugged, as he had no idea. "I have no idea, though I wish she would. I wish she would come back so that I could fix things with her and not lose her, like I fear I am." Turning his head, Andy decided to fill Kelly in on what Matt just said. "After the call he had with Gabby yesterday, he's starting to wonder whether he saw a sign that his marriage is about to end." Kelly was shocked when he heard Andy say that, as that was the last thing he'd ever thought he'd hear about Matt and Gabby's marriage. "Matt, are you out of your mind? Ok. I'm doing it. I'm channelling Shay. Matt, she LOVES you! You're an idiot if you think she's over you!"
Matt laughed as Kelly said that, as that most certainly is something that Shay would've said. "Oh, that most certainly is what Shay would've told me. Just like she would've told me to stay in Puerto Rico when I visited Gabby at the end of July." Kelly was surprised (just like Andy was) when Matt mentioned that he went to go see Gabby at the end of July. "I thought you went to my cabin with my spare keys?" Matt laughed. "Dude, Gabby's birthday is at the end of July. I went to go see her to celebrate her birthday. Sorry, but we may be in a fight…but, a husband still has needs. And she had needs as my wife." Both Kelly and Andy laughed as Matt said that, as that most certainly is the truth. A husband will always have needs, especially when he misses his wife. Though, not as many needs as Gabby right now. After all, she was hormonal and needed her husband now more than ever, which was precisely why she decided to come here to the firehouse on her way home, so that she could see her husband for the first time in months.
Sitting in her car across the street from the firehouse, Gabby turned her head to look at her loving husband as he sat on the driveway with his friends Kelly and Andy. And boy, did she love the sight of him laughing. She knew recently that he's been miserable due to the fact that she was gone, and she had every intention of coming back in August, then in September. But, things just changed. The biggest change of all was her health situation. The situation that she found herself in, where she knew a secret about her health that Matt didn't: she was currently 12 weeks pregnant with their first child. And based on the way he was laughing with Andy with no care in the world, it seemed as though he had no clue over the fact that she was pregnant, or she was right across the street from the house.
Rather, he seemed relax, which made her wonder whether this was even a good idea. Was it a good idea for her to come here to the firehouse, when this isn't what Matt wants? Maybe she should just go home and wait for him there, where they can talk in the morning. That was, until she turned her head to look at the man she loves once more as he sat with his friends. But as she looked at him this time, something happened: she locked eyes with him. And even though it was hard to make out, Matt could clearly see a car which he thought he recognized; as well as a woman he felt like he knew. And that was precisely what he decided to tell Kelly and Andy as he turned to look at them. "Hey, guys, am I dreaming…or does that car across the street look like Gabby's car?"
Turning their heads when Matt asked them whether the car he was pointing at looked like Gabby's, they both agreed. "Yeah, it does." And as they told him that the car he was pointing to looks like Gabby's, he decided to get up and set his cigar down so that he could go see whether it was indeed, Gabby's car. While, at the same time, learning some news which is going to change his world forever. And Gabby could only hope that it would change his world in a good way, even though…in the end…it could easily change it for the worst. Even though this news meant that he was one step closer to having his dream of becoming a father come true, it was also news that meant that his wife's life was on the line due to the fact that she was pregnant thanks to the aneurysm she has.
He was still in shock as he made his way over to Gabby at her car when he looked into her window, only to smile at her due to the fact that he was happy that she was home; here, with him, in Chicago. She was here, and it seemed as though she had all of her bags here with her. Something which made him even happier, due to the fact that it may mean that she was moving home. But, he doesn't know that for sure yet, as this could easily be another trip to just get more clothes, which he decided to make a joke about as Gabby rolled down her window. "You just trying to sneak in and out of town with new clothes? Without even saying hello or goodbye to me?" Gabby smiled as Matt said that, as that was something she's done in the past; of course, she wanted to do that. She wanted to just sneak in and out of town so that she didn't need to talk to Matt about their reality. Though, that wasn't something she had the luxury to do due to her medical condition. Her aneurysm which could kill her while she was pregnant. Yet, that's precisely what she was.
And as she rolled down her window, Gabby smiled at her husband. "Of course, not. Anyways, I need to talk to you." Matt smiled when Gabby said that, only to walk up to the window and look in. And as he did so, he saw why she needed to talk to him. He saw her growing abdomen and just stared into her eyes. "Gabby…" Gabby just looked down as Matt said that, only to watch him reach in and place his hand on her stomach. "Yeah, I know. I'm…." Turning her head, Gabby looked up at her husband as she was scared. "Matt, please don't yell at me. Please. Please, let me just explain and talk." Matt sighed as he heard Gabby say that, only to see her tear up. "Hey, why you crying?" Matt said, as he opened the door to her car and went to put his hand out. "Come here." Gabby agreed as she proceeded to unbuckle her seatbelt so that she could get up, which she did promptly as she needed to hold Matt. And that's precisely what she did the moment she stepped close to him: she wrapped her arms around him and held her in his arms.
That way, she could feel safe and just take a moment with the man she loves; while he placed his hands on her sides and held her close to him, while also feeling her shake. "Baby, you're shaking. Are you cold?" Gabby shook her head, as that wasn't the only reason why she was shaking at the moment. "That's not the only reason I'm shaking Matt." Looking down, Matt soon realized why she was shaking: it was because she was scared. "Are you thinking back to what I said?" Gabby nodded, as that's precisely what she was thinking about: how he told her that she can't have a baby. "Matt, I'm sorry. I'm sorry, I truly am." Matt sighed as Gabby said that, clearly able to tell that she was terrified over what he would say at the moment. How he would react to the news that she was pregnant with their child. "Hey, it's ok. Just take a breath baby. I'm here now." Surprised, Gabby looked up at her husband. "What? I'm…" Matt shook his head. "Not here. It's late, you look tired, and you need rest. Or, let's at least head into the firehouse."
Gabby agreed with her husband, as that's precisely what she wants to do: head into the firehouse so that she can be with him, as she doesn't want to be alone right now. "Matt, I don't want to be alone right now. I really don't. And I just…I need you to promise me something if I agree to go into the firehouse." Matt agreed with his wife. "What is it, babe?" Gabby sighed. "Matt, I need you to stay calm. I know that you're mad. Mad that I left, mad that I stayed away for so long, mad that I'm pregnant, mad that this is the last thing you wanted." Matt sighed, as this is the last thing that he wanted. "Yes, this may be the last thing I wanted, but that doesn't mean that I'm mad about it Gabby. Please, don't you dare think that I'm mad about this, because I'm not. Hell, I don't even know how I feel at the moment. I'm just processing this right now." Gabby agreed, as she understood that he needed a moment to truly process everything was going on right now. That was extremely reasonable, as she could see that he was scared right now. "I understand, Matt."
Matt agreed with his wife, glad that she understood that he needed a moment to process this. Yet, at the same time, he also needs her to breathe and just take it easy. "Ok. To let me process this, just fill me in. How far along are you?" Gabby bit her lip, as this was the hard part. The moment where she was going to have to reveal that the aneurysm wasn't the only reason her pregnancy was high-risk; rather, it was due to the fact that she was pregnant with twins. "Matt, I need you to breathe first. Please. I know you. You're going to be scared. Just breathe." Matt agreed with his wife, doing as he was told: he took some breaths, prior to her telling her news. "Matt, I'm 12 weeks pregnant with viable twins." And just then, Matt knew why Gabby told him that this news was scary. Not only was his wife pregnant, but she was pregnant with twins. "Oh, wow." Gabby agreed with her husband. "Listen, I was just going to check on you, then head home to rest." Matt shook his head, as that wasn't what he wanted. "No, please. Stay, babe. Stay here with me."
Gabby looked up into Matt's eyes when he said that, clearly able to tell that he was worried now. "You want me to stay because you're worried, aren't you?" Matt agreed with his wife, as he most certainly is worried. "Gabby, you need rest. We need to talk. And you just got home. And the truth is, I would've asked you to stay regardless because of how much I missed you. Please, babe. Just stay here with me. We can hold each other. Plus, I remember how much you clung to me while I was in Puerto Rico. You were so relieved to see me okay and alive; not hurt or anything, I know that. And I know that's why you came here, as you wanted to make sure that I was ok. But, we both know that you aren't going to be able to sleep tonight if you're home alone, when I could easily go out on another call." Gabby agreed with her husband, as that most certainly is the truth: she'd be worried out of her mind the entire time he was on shift for the rest of the night. "So, how about you stay here? You can take it easy and relax. And I can hold you in my arms in bed."
Gabby agreed with her husband, more than ready to hold him close to her as well due to the fact that she's missed him. "That sounds perfect." Matt agreed, only to place his hands on her arms as he kissed her softly. That was, until he heard the bells go off. "Listen, I love you. Just take what you need and go inside to my office. I need to run." Gabby agreed with her husband, well aware that was the case as he turned around to run away, only to hear her yell. "Matt!" Turning to look at Gabby, Matt saw concern all over her face. "Be safe. Promise?" Matt agreed with his wife, as that was precisely what he planned on being: safe. "I promise, babe. I promise." He yelled out, only to rush over to the truck to get in. Meanwhile, she proceeded to grab her bags from the back seat of her car so that she could go inside. That way, she could just take it easy and relax while Matt's on a call with Truck 81 and Ambo 61. And as Ambo drove by, Gabby made sure to turn her head and looked right at Sylvie. After all, they had unfinished business.
And while Sylvie was scared as she drove by, the same couldn't be said about Stella as she drove by in Truck 81. "Hey girl!" Smiling as she looked up at her friend, Gabby showed off her stomach to both Stella and Andy. "YOU KEEP MY HUSBAND SAFE! YOU HEAR ME, ANDREW!" Nodding as Gabby said that, Andy agreed. "PROMISE GABBY!" Gabby agreed with her husband's best friend, trusting him more than anybody to keep his best friend safe; after all, Andy knows just how much Matt wants to be a dad. So, she felt like she could rest easy as she proceeded to collect the rest of her things as she prepared to walk into the firehouse this evening.
Truck 81 – Turning her head as she drove towards the fire early this morning, Stella was still in shock over what she just saw; or, at least what she thought she just saw. Though, she still thought that her eyes were deceiving her. Was her best friend truly pregnant? And why was this the first time she was finding out about this, when Matt knows that she's Gabby's best friend. "Ok. Matt. What the hell!" Stella said, as she went to slap Matt's arm. "Why didn't you tell me that you and Gabby were pregnant?" Matt sighed as he heard Stella ask him that question, only to hear Andy answer for him. "Stella, he had no idea she was pregnant. I was just talking to him outside when Gabby came. He truly had no idea she was pregnant, and he was stunned when he saw that she was pregnant. So, don't go all 'how come you didn't tell me' on Matt. He's dealing with a lot right now, that he hasn't told you about yet." Turning their heads, everybody looked at Andy. "And I'm not telling anybody. I'm Matt's best friend, and I know things that you don't."
Kelly agreed with Andy, deciding to back him up. "Guys, I can attest to what Andy said. Matt is dealing with a lot at the moment, so please just lay off him. Matt, can I speak for you since you're stunned at the moment?" Matt agreed, as he could. "Go ahead." Kelly agreed. "Ok. So, here's the thing. Matt and Gabby haven't had the easiest time this past summer. Their marriage has been getting better since she left, but it's still not in a place where it should be. They need to talk a lot, and that's why Matt is so stunned…." Matt nodded, even though that wasn't the truth; though, he appreciated that he wasn't revealing any secrets he and Gabby need to share with the firehouse. "…and that's why we need to just give him time to process this, before we bombard him with any questions. Guys, his wife just came back to Chicago in the middle of the night, and she showed up pregnant. That's a lot to take in, right before he gets sent out on a call. So, Truck 81, you make sure that you keep Matt safe during the fire. Andy, stay with him. Understood?"
Andy agreed, as that was something he could do for his best friend. "Of course, I can do that for you. Matt, I promise. It'll be just like the good ole days. I'll be on your hip, just like a candidate." Matt smiled when Andy said that, as that truly made him laugh a bit; even though he was petrified of the future, especially with Gabby being pregnant with their child. And since nobody else knew the true reality of why he was scared, Matt made sure to not lead on that he was scared when he heard the chorus of congratulations starting with Herrmann. "Before we get yelled at by Boden to not do this over the radio, let me be the first to congratulate you on the pregnancy." Matt agreed, smiling at Herrmann. "Thanks Herrmann. Now, we can talk about this another time. Let's get this fire out so that I can go back to the house and be with Gabby, and not just because she's pregnant. I've missed my wife, and I want to spend some time with her. Also, NOBODY SAY THAT WORD WHEN WE GET BACK!" Everybody agreed, as they knew they didn't want that.
They didn't want to interrupt Matt and Gabby's reunion, when it was clear to them all that they needed to talk. And talk they most certainly will, just as soon as Matt gets back from the fire. Then, he'll hold Gabby in his arms as they talk to each other about the pregnancy and what comes next. After all, this is going to be hard on them both for many reasons…as if he didn't have enough to deal with, not that Matt was complaining. After all, he's always wanted to be a father and it was a dream come true to have a pregnant wife. Yet, he was also dealing with so much more. The inheritance he got from his grandparents, and the hidden demons he has hidden in the back of his mind; but, which have recently started to come back again in the form of PTSD. The last thing he needs.
Chief Boden's Office, Firehouse 51 – As she finished setting her bags down in Matt's office, Gabby took a breath as she knew that she should just lay down and take it easy right now after such a long day of travel; she should just rest and concentrate on her pregnancy, but she couldn't due to the fact that Matt was gone. So, she decided to just take a walk and stretch for a bit. After all, she's been in a plane for a while and it may help her to stretch some; just like it also helped her calm down as she walked, which was something that always worked for her while she was pregnant. But what helped even more, was the text message she got from Matt. 'Gabby, I know that I didn't say much at the firehouse because I was in shock. But, I want to let you know that you have nothing to worry about. I'm going to be safe and I'm coming right back to you. We'll figure this out. I'm with you babe, I promise. We'll figure this out together, just like we should've done in May. I'm sorry again. -Matt XO.' Taking a breath as she read the text, Gabby smiled as it was sweet.
And it was everything she needed from her husband to know that everything was going to be okay as she made her way over to Boden's office, hoping to tell him that she was here so that he wasn't scared. Scared to see someone else here, as he was alone at the moment. Or so he thought that she was alone, as he wasn't due to the fact that (as you know) Gabby was here. And that's precisely what Boden just learned as he heard Gabby speak to him while she knocked on the door. "Good morning Chief Boden. I see that you haven't gotten much sleep this evening." Looking up when he heard Gabby, Boden was surprised. "Gabby? What are you doing here this morning?" Smiling as he got up, Boden made his way over to his former paramedic. "I just got back in town. And while I thought about going home so that I could get some rest, I decided to come here first to see Matt; only to have him go on a run right when I get here." Boden agreed with Gabby as he walked up to her, only to hug her this morning. "Well, I'm happy that you came."
Gabby agreed and smiled at her former chief. "Uhm. Listen. I was going to go lay down, but…now that I have you alone, I wanted to talk to you." Boden agreed with Gabby as he felt her stomach push against his own. "Wait, are you?" Gabby smiled, nodding as she placed her hands on her bump. "I'm 12 weeks along with twins." Boden smiled as Gabby said that. "That sounds incredible. Congratulations." Gabby agreed with Boden, only to look at the chairs. "Do you mind?" Boden shook his head. "No, please. I should've said that. Come sit down." Gabby agreed, prior to doing just that. She went to sit down in the chairs, as she needed to get some rest. "Thanks. It's been a long day. Hell, I was even thinking of going home; though, Matt convinced me that the right thing to do was stay the night." Boden agreed, as that made sense; probably due to the fact that he was worried about her. "Gabby, I hate to tell you this, but uhm…he may have told me about why he'd be so worried." Gabby sighed, as she figured that would be the case.
In fact, she should've said it herself. "I understand. Probably in case he needed to leave at a moment's notice, in case something happened in Puerto Rico." Boden agreed, as that was precisely what Matt said. "You know your husband too well." Gabby agreed with Boden, smiling as she pushed a strand of hair behind her ear. "Boden, I just want to say that I'm sorry about what happened in May." Confused, Boden didn't understand what Gabby was saying. "What do you mean, Gabby?" Gabby sighed. "I'm sorry for having left all of a sudden. It was completely unprofessional of me, and the last thing I should've done." Boden shook his head. "Matt filled me in on what he said to you and asked for advice. So, I get why you ran, because your marriage was in shambles." Gabby agreed. "I was also the one who suggested he go down to see you. He was hesitant, as he thought you'd reject him; but, you clearly didn't reject him." Gabby smiled, as she most certainly didn't. "Oh no, we had a fabulous time in Puerto Rico. But, it's not all fun and games."
Boden agreed. "The truth is that this pregnancy is high risk. Boden, I need you to please promise me that you take care of Matt. You see, I have an aneurysm on my right iliac artery." Upon hearing so, Boden got scared as he knew about those. "Gabby, I'm so sorry." Gabby agreed with Boden. "I know, it's not something I need to share, but I do. I needed to let you know, as you need to promise me that you keep Matt safe. God, I didn't think I would be as scared as I am right now but…the aneurysm could kill me if something goes wrong Boden. I could die, leaving Matt to raise the twins on his own." Boden shook his head when he heard Gabby say that. "Gabby, I'm so sorry. Just know that he wouldn't do it on his own, as we'd be there for him." Gabby smiled, as she knew that was the truth; the entire firehouse would (of course) rally around him and their twins, to help him in whatever way they can. "I know that, and it feels great to hear it. But, he's still going to be worried the entire time. I just needed to let you know, just in case something happens."
Boden agreed, as he was grateful for what she said. "I appreciate that Gabby, but you shouldn't have to worry about that. I want you to take it easy and rest. Is that why you're here? To rest and take it easy with Matt, so that you aren't alone at your place?" Gabby sighed, as that was precisely why she was here. "Yes, I'm here for that reason. I just couldn't be alone right now. Plus, I have a lot of bags to bring in and I need some help." Boden snickered, even though he shouldn't. "I shouldn't laugh at that, as I know that you need it for multiple reasons." Gabby smiled, as she knew why he was laughing. "No, it's ok Boden. Humor is how I get through all this stress. I laugh when I need to, as it helps calm things down and just lets me take it easy." Boden agreed with Gabby. "Speaking of which, how are you in the aftermath of what happened with Sylvie?" Gabby was shocked when she heard what Boden said. "Sorry, what?" Boden sighed. "I got your report Gabby. Is it true?" Gabby nodded, as it was all true. Every single thing she did that day was true.
And that was why, even though she left afterwards, she still felt the need to send in a report. "I know, I should've told you that same day to protect the citizens of Chicago; and I felt guilty about that, so I felt the need to send in a report. I hope you can forgive me for not having done it sooner." Boden shook his head, as there was no need for forgiveness. "Gabby, Matt told me about everything that happened around that time. So, I understand that you telling me what happened was the last thing on your mind. You were dealing with so much, and I knew that you probably just wanted to deal with your marriage first." Gabby nodded, as that was precisely what she wanted to do: make sure that her marriage was okay. "Gabby, I promise. I understand why you waited, and I understand why you left. You thought that was the right thing to do, as you needed to do what was best for you. Just know, that you can lean on us. The entire firehouse is here for you, no matter what you think. We're all going to be here whenever you need us. We're family, after all."
Gabby snickered as Boden said that. "Some family I had on Ambo 61." Gabby then realized what she just said and felt horrible, as it was so inconsiderate of her. "Boden, I'm…" Putting his hand up, Boden didn't want to hear it. "Hey, no need to say anything. Gabby, I get what you're trying to say, and I promise that we're going to fix everything." Gabby agreed with Boden, as she felt the same way. "Thanks Chief." Boden agreed with Gabby and smiled, happy that she was home. "Listen, you look tired. How about you go get some rest until Matt gets back?" Gabby agreed as she got up, only to make her way over to him so that she could hug him. "Thanks Chief." Boden agreed with Gabby as she said that, smiling as he hugged her. "No problem, Gabby." Gabby smiled as she let Boden go, only to walk away so that she could go lay down in Matt's bed, which is precisely where she wanted to be when he got back this morning.
Casey's Quarters, Firehouse 51 – She was sound asleep when he came back from his latest fire, all comfortable and cozy in his bed. Oh, the sight that it was for Matt when he came back from his latest call: his gorgeous, pregnant wife in his bed. Just laying there with her stomach clearly visible under the covers of his bed. The stomach he wanted to place his hand on, as they held each other close and took it easy with each other. And now that he was here, that's precisely what Matt was going to do: lay down in bed with his wife, as he held her in his arms and placed his hand on her stomach. But, he also wanted to make sure that he didn't wake her up as he took off his jacket and set it down on his chair; only to take off his shoes, which would make everything much more comfortable when he joined the love of his life in bed. And he was right, because it was very comfortable when he joined Gabby in bed. Sure, it wasn't their bed at home (which will always be much more comfortable), yet it was still a bed where he could hold his family in his arms.
And now that he was doing so, he was much more relaxed; though, Gabby was no longer asleep. "Matt, is that you?" Nodding, Matt proceeded to press his lips to Gabby's shoulder. "Yeah, it's just me, babe. It's ok." Gabby agreed with her husband, only to roll over in his arms and place her hand on his face; while Matt placed his hand on her growing stomach as they held each other close in his little bed. "Sorry I'm taking up so much space in bed, I'm much bigger than I was when I left." Matt smiled as Gabby said that, only to place his hand on her stomach and stroke it with his thumb; leaning in to kiss her at the same time, Matt smirked as he took things nice and slow with his beautiful wife this morning. "You're home, and that's all that matters at the end of the day. The fact that you're home, here, with me; safe in my arms, where you belong." Gabby agreed, as she knew this was where she belonged. "I know. I just…" Taking a breath. "I didn't know how you would react, that's why I stayed away for so long; I'm sorry for that." Matt agreed with his wife.
After all, he knew that; he knew that was the reason why she stayed away for so long, as she didn't know how he would react to the news of her being pregnant with their children. "I know that Gabby, I promise. I know that you were scared, and that you stayed away because you wanted to take it easy. Then, you would come back when you were ready. And clearly, you're ready now." Gabby sighed, as she still didn't know what she was. Whether she was ready or not. All she knew, was that she needed her husband with her. "The truth is…I was skeptical that I was ready to come home up until I got on the plane." Matt was surprised. "Really?" Gabby nodded. "I was scared of the reception I'd get from you after what you said in May. I mean, I know what you said in July when you came for my birthday…thanks for doing that." Matt agreed with his wife as he placed his hand on the side of her face. "It was such a great time, and I don't regret it for a bit. Two weeks with you in Puerto Rico was a great honeymoon for us."
Smiling as she cuddled up to Matt, Gabby agreed with him as she kissed him softly. "I love you Matt, and I want to make this work. I want you to be a dad." Matt agreed with his wife, as that's what he wants as well. He wants to be a dad, and he wants to make their marriage work. And now that she's home, he has every intention to make that happen. "Maybe I should take some time off. Just the two of us for a bit. Maybe we can get away or something." Gabby smiled as Matt made that suggestion. "Buy a new home for our family." Gabby smiled. "With what money?" Matt smiled. "The $3.9 billion inheritance I just got from my grandparents after they died." Gabby was stunned when she heard Matt say that. "Sorry, what!" Matt agreed with his wife as he placed his hand on her back. "I was going to tell you soon, but I just finished with the lawyer. Hell, I don't even need to work anymore, I just am because I like my job." Gabby agreed with Matt, as she could understand that. "I get that." Matt smiled as he agreed with his wife.
Though, that didn't mean that he was going to keep working now. "Honestly, I was thinking of quitting the CFD." Gabby was surprised. "You, quit the CFD?" Matt nodded. "I was thinking about it before you came home. But now that you're home and pregnant with the twins…" Gabby nodded, as that made sense; this news must've changed everything for him and all he was thinking. The fact that she could die had to be on his mid at the moment. "It's on your mind, isn't it?" Matt nodded, though he didn't want to think that way. "I hope you know that this is the last way I want to think. I just…" Gabby shook her head as she placed her hand on Matt's face, as the last thing she wanted was for him to start overthinking everything. Of course, he was going to be scared; for her to not know that ahead of time was ridiculous, as she knew for a fact that he was going to be scared. And that was why she came back. "It's why I came back, because I knew that we had to do this together. Though, I have to thank you for not yelling at me. I appreciated that."
Matt shook his head, as he wouldn't dream of yelling at her while she's pregnant with their child; especially not with her condition being so serious. "Gabby, the last thing I was going to do is anything that could put your life at risk. That was why I said what I said, remember? I promise, I hated what I said the moment I said it. All I meant, was that I didn't want to be the one that killed you." Gabby agreed with Matt, well aware that was the case. "And as hard as it was for me to understand after you first told me when you came to visit, I understand now. I understand what you meant, and I promise that we're going to figure this out together." Matt smiled as Gabby told him that, more than ready to do just that for the rest of their lives. "I promise, we're going to do this as a team. I may not have been in this from the very start of the pregnancy, but I'm in it now, babe." Gabby agreed, happy to hear him say that. "You have no idea how nice it is to hear you say that." Matt smiled and agreed. "Listen, let's get some rest and take it easy."
Gabby agreed with Matt, more than ready to get the rest she needs as she's exhausted after a long day of travel. Thought, not too exhausted to finally talk to Matt about what happened before she left. "Matt, I need to tell you something before we go to bed. I need to tell you something to warn you to not get too close to Sylvie." Matt was confused when he heard Sylvie say that. "What are you talking about?" Gabby sighed. "Sylvie threw the ambo bag at me when we had a fight on our last call while I was here." Matt was shocked when he heard Gabby say that. "What?"
