Dabi had spent the whole night watching over Yuka, holding her tight as she slept in his arms. He wanted to make sure that she wasn't going to slip back into another flashback while she was sleeping. As he watched over her, he thought about his own experiences with trauma. It had been hard having to go through all of that pain on his own and seeing Yuka go through the same thing made him wish for someone to have been there for him when things got really bad. Being alone during these kinds of moments wasn't something he wished upon anyone, which was why he wanted to be there for Yuka, since he knew that she didn't have anyone else in her life. He didn't want her to feel alone like he had been in the past…
The hours ticked by and Yuka was still sound asleep in his arms. He could see the sun poking through the curtains, marking the beginning of a brand new day. He was exhausted, but it all seemed worth it since she had managed to sleep soundly through the entire night. When she finally stirred from her sleep, Yuka looked up to see that Dabi was already awake and looking awfully tired. She shot him a concerned look and looked down to see that she was still wearing her mask. For some reason, it hadn't come off while she was sleeping and it's at that moment that she realized they had barely moved since they went to bed the night before.
"Good morning, sweetheart," Dabi crooned, flashing her a crooked smile to hide his exhaustion.
"Mmh… good morning," she replied tiredly. "Did you stay up all night?"
Dabi looked away, slightly disappointed that she had noticed his tired look.
"Don't worry about it," he said to her in a neutral tone. "Did you sleep well?"
Yuka thought about it for a moment. She felt rested, despite the intense turmoil she had been subjected to the night prior. Last night's events were kind of hazy and she had trouble recalling what kind of dreams she had during the night. She figured it was preferable to her having nightmares, which she admitted was a concern when she had first gone to bed.
"I did," she answered briefly. "But Dabi, you really didn't have to-"
"I said not to worry about it," he shot back in a harsher tone. "Just… focus on yourself today, alright? I'm gonna get some rest in the meantime…"
She could see that he was utterly exhausted. She didn't want to pester him any further, even though she felt extremely guilty for him having to watch over her while she slept. She gave him a slight nod, then leaned forward to kiss him on the forehead. Dabi then rolled over to the other side of the bed to get some sleep.
As Yuka slowly climbed out of bed, she noticed that her phone screen had just lit up on the nightstand. She grabbed it to see who had just messaged her. To her surprise, she saw that Toga had sent her a text saying that she and Magne were coming to Musutafu to visit one of Magne's friends. Since she knew that Yuka and Dabi had gone to Musutafu, she figured she'd invite her to meet with them and they could spend some time together outside of work duties. Yuka hesitated for a moment. Meeting up with friends wasn't really something she normally did, but she also didn't trust herself being alone at the moment, not after what had happened last night. Dabi had already done more than enough by watching over her through the entire night and she figured it would do her some good to see other people for once.
She texted back to her saying that she would meet with them today. Toga then sent a whole slew of happy emojis before telling her where to meet them. After confirming everything with Himiko, Yuka turned to look at Dabi, who was already lying half asleep next to her.
"I'm going to meet with Toga and Magne today," she declared. "Will you be okay without me?"
Dabi then waved his hand weakly at her. "Go. Do what you want. I'll be fine here…"
He then lazily went back to sleep as Yuka bent down to kiss his temple. She then left the room to prepare for her outing. As she went over her clothing options, she figured she would wear something more put together than what she usually wore on a daily basis. Her outfits were mostly utilitarian, but today she figured since she wouldn't be on the job and that she was mostly going out for fun, she would wear some of the nicer clothing Giran had gotten for her. Once she was dressed, she stuffed a few things in her bag and debated for a moment if she was going to wear a mask or not to go out. She figured the passersby would have a harder time identifying her if she didn't wear a mask, since she had mostly been spotted wearing one. After stuffing a few more things into her bag, she stepped out of the apartment and started to make her way towards the nearby bus stop.
While she was on her way towards the rendez-vous spot, Yuka realized she had never gone out with a group of friends before and she was feeling surprisingly nervous about it. As she was riding the bus towards the downtown area of Musutafu, she started to regret accepting Toga's invitation. Suddenly having people around her who wanted to spend time with her was completely foreign to her, and it made her self-conscious to know that she had no idea how to act or behave in this kind of situation. For once, she was worried about disappointing people which wasn't something she usually concerned herself with. As the bus pulled over next to the stop she needed to take, she felt her chest tighten as she exited the vehicle. She could see the park where Himiko had told her to meet them at and, sure enough, they were all waiting for her near the fountain. Toga had traded her usual school uniform for a pair of shorts and a white top. She was also wearing some black knee-high socks that seemed ripped in a few places. Magne, on the other hand, was wearing a red summer dress with a white summer hat and a pair of sandals. Now that she was wearing something more revealing, Yuka could clearly see that she had been born a male. Despite that, she was absolutely glowing in her summer dress and seeing her this happy made Yuka crack a smile.
"It's Miaaaaaa!" Toga exclaimed as she saw her approach.
Yuka braced herself as Himiko came running towards her. She then threw herself at her, hugging her tight as she looked up to give her the biggest smile she had ever given her.
"I'm so happy you came!" Himiko said as her cheeks slowly started to turn pink.
Yuka seemed shocked at first, as if she didn't know what to do with all of the attention she was getting. She tentatively patted her on the back before backing away and waving at the other two women approaching them.
"It's good to see you again," she said to them. "You as well, Magne. You look great."
"Thanks!" the tall red-haired woman replied. "Himiko's the one who got me this dress!"
"Teehee! I figured Big Sis Mag' would look really cute with this on," the blonde girl said with a giggle.
"The color looks great on you," Yuka added, a faint smile curling her lips.
"Thanks Mia!... Oh! By the way, this is the friend Himiko mentioned in her text. Her name's Violet!"
The woman standing next to Magne seemed even bigger and burlier in comparison, but her girlish pigtails and her light lavender dress strongly suggested that she was also female.
"It's a pleasure to meet you," the woman said to her. She seemed a lot more shy than her redheaded friend.
"The pleasure's mine," Yuka answered calmly, tilting her head slightly in reverence.
"Magne was saying we should go to the local amusement park!" Himiko said in an excited tone. "What do you say, Mia? Do you wanna go?"
Yuka stared at her in surprise. She had expected they would keep a low profile since they were wanted criminals. Even though they weren't wearing their usual gear, it seemed unwise for them to be visiting a place with such a large concentration of people.
"I'm… not sure that's such a good idea, Himiko," she reluctantly replied. "It wouldn't exactly be safe for us to be surrounded by so many people…"
"Aww come on! I'm sure it'll be fine!" Toga assured her confidently. "There'll be so many people there that we're sure to blend in! Plus, we're not even wearing our villain costumes."
Yuka didn't look convinced. Toga then started to look at her with sad puppy eyes, trying to get her to change her mind. Yuka let out a long sigh, rolling her eyes as she turned to look away.
"Fine…" she exhaled. "Since you seem so keen on going…"
"YAYYY!" Himiko exclaimed, skipping around happily before squeezing her in her arms once again. "I knew you'd say yes!"
Yuka let out another exasperated sigh. Once everyone was in agreement, they all made their way towards the bus stop and waited for the bus to come and pick them up so that they could make their way down to the amusement park. Yuka remained quiet while the other three seemed hyped to be visiting the amusement park together.
"Man, I haven't been to a theme park in AAAGES!" Himiko proclaimed. "How long has it been for you, Mia?"
She saw Yuka's face turn slightly red as she averted her gaze from her. She seemed embarrassed, which confused Himiko at first. Magne also took notice of her reluctance and leaned forward so that she was closer to her.
"Have you ever been to an amusement park, Mia?" the tall woman asked.
Yuka's face turned even redder as she leaned away from them, almost turning her back towards them as she tried to hide her embarrassment. She had never been to an amusement park before. She knew what they were and the kinds of attractions that were usually found there, but she had never been to one herself. She felt too embarrassed to tell them, since it was something most people did at least once in their life. Seeing her reaction, Magne's expression turned to sadness as she understood what was happening.
"Oh Mia…" Magne said, feeling bad for having asked that question.
Toga looked at her with a sad look on her face, which was quickly replaced with a wide, toothy grin. She then turned towards the two burly women and slammed her fist against her palm in a decisive manner.
"Alright, listen up!" she commanded them. "Since Mia has never been to an amusement park before, we're gonna make today extra special for her!"
"Count me in!" Magne answered enthusiastically.
"We'll make today a day you won't forget!" Violet chimed in.
Yuka's face kept getting redder and redder as she continued to look away.
"You guys don't have to go through so much effort just for me…" she said to them shyly.
"Nonsense!" Magne proclaimed. "You're important to us, Mia, and we want you to have the best day ever!"
She wasn't used to getting so much positive attention all at once. She continued to look away, only looking back for a few seconds as she tried to hide her embarrassment as much as possible. She didn't know how to respond, so she remained silent for the rest of the bus ride. Once they arrived at their destination, they stepped out of the crowded vehicle and stared up at the massive gate leading into the park.
"Just leave everything to us, Mia!" Himiko said as she hooked her arm around hers. "We'll show you everything there is to do here!"
"That's very sweet of you three, but-" Yuka started to say.
"No buts!" Magne scolded her. "You're always so serious all the time. It's time you let loose a little!"
"But I-..."
"ZIP! Just follow our lead!"
It was pointless to fight against them, so she let herself be swept up by their enthusiasm reluctantly. They weren't trying to embarrass her or make her do something she didn't want to. They only had good intentions, so she figured she would go along with what they had planned for the day. Surprisingly, no one seemed to notice their presence. Maybe it was because there were so many people around, or maybe it was because they weren't wearing their usual clothes, but whatever it was, it meant that they were free to roam around the park without having to worry about people recognizing them.
Yuka tried her best to let go of her insecurities and have fun while Himiko and Magne went from one attraction to another. They started by making her ride the carousel. There, Yuka got to pick which horse she was going to ride. She ended up opting for the unicorn, since it seemed to be Toga's favorite out of all the available animals. They both rode the carousel side-by-side, with Himiko smiling from ear to ear the whole time. Yuka felt a bit foolish at first. After all, theme parks were mostly reserved for children, but as the ride progressed, she slowly started to enjoy herself. After riding the carousel, Magne and Toga decided to ride the teacups with her. Violet stayed behind to watch them from the sideline, knowing full well how things would go. Sure enough, during the entire ride, Magne was spinning the cup so fast that Yuka and Himiko almost threw up when they came out of the ride. The burly red-head seemed completely unphased and laughed at the two girls struggling to walk straight as they exited the ride. After taking a short break to calm their stomachs, Toga suggested going on one of the roller coasters. She seemed especially excited to go on the biggest, most intense one they had, which left Yuka feeling anxious and uncertain.
"Umm…" she uttered while she looked up at the roller coaster zooming along the track. "A-Are you sure this is safe?"
"It's perfectly safe, Mia!" Himiko assured her. "Come on! Let's get in line!"
She pulled her towards the queue and before she had time to protest, a few people moved behind them, blocking her exit. She sighed, resigning herself to her fate as they waited patiently for their turn to ride the coaster. She kept looking up at the people screaming their heads off whenever they went down a particularly steep incline. This only served to make her even more nervous and before she knew it, she was sitting inside the ride next to Himiko while Magne and Violet rode in the car behind them. As soon as the train started to move, Yuka gripped the bar in front of her while Himiko shouted her excitement as the train started its steady ascension up the first incline.
"U-Umm… H-Himiko?" Yuka stammered. "I'm not too sure about this anymore!"
"It's okay, Mia!" Toga tried to reassure her. "You can hold my hand if you're scared!"
As she extended her hand towards her, Yuka wondered how she managed to muster up the courage to let go of the bar holding them down. She contemplated the idea of taking Himiko's hand, but decided against it, seeing as it was utterly foolish of her to be afraid of such a stupid ride. As the train continued to climb the first incline, Yuka looked down to see the crowd of people walking below grow further and further away, making her instantly regret her decision. She straightened her back quickly, now looking straight ahead as the front of the train started to curve slightly.
"T-Toga!" she stuttered as the train curved over the bend.
Before she knew it, the train suddenly dipped past the top of the incline, pulling them down. Yuka screamed at the top of her lungs, grabbing for Toga's hand as she held on for dear life while the train quickly descended, then abruptly ascended once again before shooting down another steep incline. Meanwhile, Toga was cheering and screaming with delight, while Magne was absolutely losing it in the back from seeing Yuka so utterly terrified. Everytime the train took a sudden dive, Yuka would scream in terror, clutching the bar and Toga's hand as if her life depended on it. Before long, the train finally slowed down before immobilizing itself at the station, marking the end of the ride. Even though they were free to go, Yuka was still glued to her seat, completely frozen in fear. Himiko could barely feel her hand anymore with how tightly she had been squeezing her palm, but seeing her friend's frightened expression made it all worthwhile in the end.
After helping the poor terrified girl out of her seat, Magne brought everyone to the food court where they could sample the local carnival food. Yuka had never eaten any of the foods served at the kiosks and her two colleagues gladly had her sample a bit of everything. They of course paid for her meal, despite Yuka's protesting, and after eating their fill of greasy food and sweet confections, they went on a few more rides. Yuka was reluctant at first to go on any more rides after her experience with the roller coaster, but she ended up enjoying herself despite her initial apprehension. As the day progressed, she became more and more relaxed and her smile slowly started to come through more and more often, much to her friends' delight. They had rarely seen her smile before. Her face was almost always covered by some kind of face-covering and she almost always had this really cold look on her face. It was nice for once to be able to see her so genuinely happy.
As the day came to a close, the three of them had Yuka ride the ferris wheel where, from the very top of the ride, they admired the beautiful array of colors that stained the sky as the sun was setting in the distance. This was probably Yuka's favorite activity of the day and it showed by how incandescently at peace she looked looking up at the sky. Himiko couldn't help but smile at her peaceful expression as she wrapped her arm around hers and pressed her head to her shoulder affectionately.
"Did we manage to make today special for you, Mia?" she asked softly.
Yuka turned to look at her, smiling serenely. "You did. Well done, Himiko…"
The blond girl squealed as she nuzzled against her friend's shoulder. Magne smiled as the two girls sat side-by-side, looking up at the setting sun. She then turned to her friend Violet, who seemed just as pleased with herself with how things had turned out.
"I'm glad to hear it," Himiko said after a short while. "We were really worried when Dabi texted us that you weren't feeling well…"
Yuka turned her head towards her in surprise. She shot a look at Magne, who was staring daggers at Toga as if she had said something she shouldn't have.
"Toga! We weren't supposed to tell her!" she scolded her.
"Oh right! Sorry…" Himiko replied in an apologetic tone.
Yuka continued to look at them in shock. She knew that Dabi had been concerned for her the night before, but she hadn't expected him to contact Toga and Magne so that the two girls could cheer her up. She felt kind of betrayed for having been played by both sides, but figured they were only trying to make her feel better after the rough night she had gone through, so she let out a soft sigh and turned her head back towards the sunset.
"Remind me to thank him later then…"
