Once they were let off the ride, the three girls received a message on their phones simultaneously. They all checked to see who had sent them a collective text message, even though they were fairly sure of who it was. Sure enough, Shigaraki had sent them a message telling them to meet him at an old abandoned warehouse located outside of town. His message instantly soured the previously cheerful mood and Yuka's smile disappeared as they made their way out of the park to return home.
She rode the bus back into town, where she bid farewell to Violet and told the other two that she would meet them at the abandoned warehouse. They had no idea why they were meeting there, but since Shigaraki had summoned all of them, it was probably something big. Yuka quickly made her way back to Dabi's apartment, only to find that he was nowhere to be found. She figured he had already seen Shigaraki's message and was already on his way to the abandoned warehouse. After putting on her mask and changing into some more "work appropriate clothes", she left the apartment and slowly made her way towards the outskirts of town where the abandoned warehouse was located.
Since she had to walk to where Shigaraki had told them to meet, it took her longer than most to reach the forest where the warehouse was located. The meeting had most likely already started and Yuka reprimanded herself for having gotten lost on the way there. Once she reached the old abandoned building, she entered through one of the side entrances and hurried to meet with the rest of the gang. In a way, she was sort of looking forward to seeing everyone reunited once again. It meant that maybe Shigaraki had formulated a plan for them and that the others had managed to recruit a few people. She was excited to hear what the others had been up to since they separated, which surprised her since she wasn't used to having people she looked forward to seeing. Her recent outing with Himiko and Magne had left her more optimistic than she had ever been before. She thought to herself, maybe things were going to be okay after all.
When she finally reached the main area of the building, she could see that a few of her comrades were sitting on a few crates stacked to one side of the room. Toga and Magne had changed into their usual clothes, same as Mr. Compress, who had adorned himself with his signature costume. Even Shigaraki had gone all out for this meeting and was wearing his villain costume. Spinner seemed absent from the meeting, same as Dabi. Twice was standing more towards the center of the room, next to somebody Yuka couldn't make out from where she stood. As she continued to approach, she gradually started to make out the expressions on her comrades' faces. They were clearly having a tense conversation with whoever Twice had brought with him which immediately put Yuka on her guard. She still couldn't see who they were talking to since they were standing behind a wall that was blocking her view. Before she could get close enough to make out who their guest was, she saw Magne jump out of her seat and grab for her weapon, before charging forward towards their honored guest.
"Sorry, Yakuza boy! But we didn't come here to serve under someone's boot!" she shouted, taking off the protective tarp from her magnetic weapon.
Yakuza boy? Yuka froze at the mention of her old clan. She had gotten close enough now that she could clearly make out who the person they were meeting with was. She felt her heart stop as she realized who it was. The distinctive color of his eyes and the familiar shade of auburn in his short hair was unmistakable. This was the one person she had hoped never to cross paths with: the young second-in-command of the Shie Hassaikai… Kai Chisaki.
None of them had noticed her arrival. She wanted to look away, turn back and run out of the building, but her legs wouldn't budge. She was frozen in place, forced to watch as Magne activated her quirk and started pulling Chisaki towards her.
"Today, I met with an old friend," she started speaking calmly. "She's a gentle soul, but she supports me despite knowing about my past. D'you know what she said to me? Those who are bound by the chains of society laugh at those who aren't!"
She continued to exert her magnetic pull on Kai, pulling him closer and closer to her.
"I'm here because I don't want to be bound by anything!" she shouted as she lifted her weapon over her head. "We're free to decide for ourselves exactly where we belong!"
As Chisaki collided with the burly red-headed woman, everything seemed to slow down, as if everything were in slow motion all of a sudden. Yuka watched as Kai removed one of his gloves and ran his finger down Magne's forearm. A few seconds later, Magne's skin expanded and swelled until the entire upper half of her body suddenly exploded, spraying blood everywhere and painting the walls crimson red. Everyone watched as Magne's existence was suddenly erased by Kai's quirk. It was like the ground had suddenly given out underneath Yuka's feet. Her entire body was trembling, but she couldn't seem to move. Her eyes couldn't look away from the scene that was unfolding before her eyes. It felt almost surreal, like she was caught in a nightmare, a nightmare she couldn't escape…
"No…" she heard Toga speak. "Big Sis Mag!"
Kai had ducked out of the way when Magne's body exploded in front of him. He had managed to avoid most of the blood, but had been sprayed nonetheless by the carnage he had just inflicted.
"Urgh! I'm filthy now! This is why I hate the aftermath…" he complained while anxiously rubbing the sleeve of his coat. "Just remember, you made the first move…"
A few seconds later, Compress suddenly rose from where he was sitting, leaping into the air as he soared across the room with his arm extended towards Kai.
"Compress, wait!" Shigaraki yelled for him to stop.
"NO!" the magician shouted back. "I have to seal him away!"
Everything seemed to slow down once again. As Compress got closer and closer to her ex, Yuka's body suddenly started moving on its own. After what had just happened to Magne, she couldn't just stand by while the same thing happened to Compress, not when she could do something about it. It was her will to protect him that pushed her body to move on its own accord, and in the span of a few seconds, she quickly closed the gap between her, Compress and Kai. As she closed the distance, the glint of something shiny caught her attention. A second or two later, a small metallic object implanted itself into Compress' arm, freezing him in place. At first, she thought he had been struck by a paralyzing dart, but quickly realized the reason he had stopped moving was because he couldn't get his quirk to activate. In his confusion, he left himself wide-open to Chisaki's attacks, but luckily for him, Yuka had arrived just in time to prevent him from suffering the same fate as their fallen comrade. Despite her incredible speed, she hadn't been fast enough to prevent him from having his arm blown off by Chisaki's quirk. Blood came splattering against her face as Compress fell to the floor next to her.
"Don't touch me!" Chisaki yelled as he tried to recoil from Compress' touch.
That's when he felt his arm being lifted up into the air. In her rush to save her colleague, Yuka had lifted Kai's arm out of the way and was now holding it above his head. Their eyes finally met for the first time and all of Kai's hatred was suddenly replaced with a look of pure and utter shock as he stared back into Yuka's eyes. She continued to hold his ungloved hand far above their heads, making sure not to touch his skin directly as she didn't want to set him off even further. The two of them remained frozen in place for what seemed like an eternity, but their reunion was quickly cut short by Shigaraki suddenly moving from being her. That's when another metallic glint caught her eye and she quickly jumped back to try and avoid it.
"Wait! Shigaraki!" Yuka called out to him as she lunged forward to try and grab him by the back of his coat.
She felt the fabric slip between her fingers as Tomura continued to charge forward. She feared the worst when she saw him extend his open hand towards Kai, but the brown haired man swiftly jumped away, calling for reinforcement as another masked man suddenly appeared out of nowhere to shield him. This would spell his doom as Shigaraki's hand collided with the man's chest, instantly reducing him to ash. Shigaraki then jumped backwards next to Yuka, keeping his guard up as he looked towards Chisaki.
"Now I get it…" he said quietly.
A few seconds later, a group of masked men suddenly erupted from the wall behind Chisaki.
"You should have just started with this! Saved us all some time…" Tomura spat aggressively.
They then heard a voice coming from the ceiling.
"That was a close one, Overhaul."
A few seconds after speaking, a man wearing a white coat and a similar plague doctor's mask as the others came down from the roof with a gun in his hand. Yuka immediately recognized the man's voice. Like her, he had grown up with Kai and had been one of his closest allies: Hari Kurono. Yuka remained on her guard as she stepped in between Shigaraki and Chisaki's band of thugs.
"You're late…" Kai said to his assistant in an annoyed tone.
"And I missed a shot," Kurono replied, lifting his gun up in front of him. "But at least we know they work."
Meanwhile, Twice had gone to Compress' side and was holding him in his arms. He stared in bewilderment at the sudden arrival of enemy backup.
"Where did they come from?!" he asked, his voice cracking from the sheer panic. He then turned to Shigaraki. "We weren't followed, I swear!"
"One of them probably has a tracking quirk," Tomura hypothesized.
Yuka could feel the adrenaline pumping in her veins. She remained on high alert, ready to strike at anyone that would dare to make a move against her or her comrades. She kept looking back at Kai who, to her surprise, seemed completely unphased by her presence now.
"Hard to be objective in this situation," he said to the League of Villains.
He looked towards the remains of Magne and his subordinate who had been turned to dust by Shigaraki.
"A death of both sides…" he noted calmly. "Killing each other isn't productive, so let's take a breather… We'll cool our heads and try again later. I owe your side an arm…"
He then turned his back on them and started to walk away. As he started to make his way out of the building through the hole his team had just made in the wall, Yuka could hear the others yell out in protest.
"Bastard! I'll eviscerate you!" Twice shouted angrily, still clutching Compress' limp body in his arms.
"Tomura," Toga's voice came out in a low tone. "Let me cut him, real' quick…"
"... No," Shigaraki replied.
"It's my responsibility!" Twice protested loudly.
"No!" Tomura reiterated more forcefully.
"Smart decision, Facepalm Guy," a small, doll-like creature uttered from atop the shoulders of one of Chisaki's particularly large goons. Upon hearing his words, Kai suddenly stopped his advance.
"I don't want to rush you but…" he spoke without turning to face them. "The sooner we talk, the better." He then stuck his hand in his pocket and pulled out a business card. He then threw the card backwards towards Shigaraki. "Think things over carefully. Consider how your organization should be run. Then, when you've calmed down… call me."
"They gotta pay for this!" Twice continued to object. "Why can't I go after him?!"
"Enough, Jin!" Yuka finally spoke. "We need to take Compress to a doctor…"
"My power… wouldn't work!" Compress said with difficulty, barely conscious as he was slumped over in Twice's arms.
Yuka continued to look in Kai's direction as he and his gang were walking away. Once they were out of view, she quickly snapped back towards her colleagues, turning her attention towards Twice and Compress to help him up as Twice started to walk him towards the back of the building. She then turned to look at Toga, who was now staring at Magne's lower half lying just a few feet away in a pool of blood.
"Maybe we do have time to make them bleed…" she murmured as she leaned down to look at the knife she was holding.
"No…" Shigaraki repeated to her.
She looked up to see him walking away towards the side exit where Yuka had previously entered through.
"Come on, Tomura," Himiko continued to speak in a low voice.
"Another time…" Shigaraki replied weakly, placing his arms behind his back.
He continued to take a few steps forward, then stopped. He picked up something from the floor, examining it for a moment before stuffing it in his coat pocket. He then continued his way out of the building, leaving Toga and Yuka to deal with Magne's body.
The two of them hauled Magne's lower half towards the woods behind the warehouse. The whole while, Yuka seemed completely dead inside. She could hardly believe what had just transpired mere moments ago. It seemed almost too horrible to be true. Just earlier that day, Magne had taken her to the amusement park for the very first time in her life and now… she was gone, killed by the very person she had once loved more than anything. How could this have happened? She never would have thought Kai capable of killing someone so indiscriminately. He seemed like a completely different person now. Had he grown colder because of her? She kept thinking about how she had abandoned him back when she had lost her father, and the more she thought about it, the more she felt her stomach churn.
Once they were outside, the two girls started to dig a hole so they could bury their deceased friend. Once they had dug a hole sufficiently deep, they plopped Magne's remains and slowly started to cover them with dirt. They still hadn't spoken a word to each other since they had started moving her body. Once Magne's remains were buried deep underground, they both stepped back and stared emptily at the unmarked grave. Yuka couldn't help but feel responsible for what had happened to her. If she had gotten there sooner, maybe she could have prevented this from happening. She kept thinking about how drastically Kai seemed to have changed and wondered, if she hadn't left him when she did, maybe things would have turned out differently. This only served to dredge up all of the guilt she had been repressing all these years and it grew to such an extent that she couldn't contain any of it anymore. Without realizing it, she suddenly took off into the forest. She could barely hear the sound of Toga's voice calling for her as she ran further and further into the woods. She could barely see more than an inch in front of her because of how dark it was and her vision was impaired even further when tears started to prick her eyes. She could feel the emotions starting to take hold of her as her breathing became more and more erratic. Then, she suddenly tripped over a root and fell over into the damp earth. She wanted to get back up, but her body was shaking so much that it was impossible for her to stand. She could hear her voice cracking as sobs erupted from her throat. So many familiar feelings came rushing back in as she was overwhelmed by the wave of emotions rising up to the surface. This was exactly how she had felt when her father had died 7 years ago. As tears and sobs continued to pour out of her quivering lips, she clutched herself in desperation, as if holding herself in her arms was going to help her push away the agonizing feelings she had sworn never to feel ever again. She kept chastising herself mentally, thinking to herself how stupid she had been for letting people in when she had swore that she would never let anyone get close enough to make her feel the way she felt right now.
She let out a roaring scream, shouting her frustration into the night as she fell back against a tree. She remained huddled up against the base of the tree, her arms wrapped tightly around herself as she cried and screamed for the pain to stop until there was nothing left but apathy. She then sat motionless on the forest floor, barely aware of the fact that she could hear a few voices coming from the direction of the warehouse. It felt like she had been submerged underwater and as she waited for the pain to drown her, she felt a pair of arms picking her up from the ground and carrying her towards the warehouse. Yuka could barely hear the two voices that were calling out to her, trying to get her to respond. She just stared blankly as she was brought into the building once more. At that moment, the fog seemed to lift slightly and she could hear Dabi's voice calling out to her, stirring her from the haze that clouded her mind. She turned her eyes towards him, realizing that Toga was also crouched down in front of her. The two of them were looking at her with concerned expressions on their faces, but Yuka was too weak to respond. They ended up looking at each other, completely at a loss as to what they were supposed to do with her.
"Fuuuuuck!" Dabi exclaimed, pacing around nervously and he combed his fingers through his hair. "Why the fuck isn't she answering?!"
"Show some respect, Dabi!" Toga snapped at him. "She just watched her friend die!"
"How did this even happen?" he complained loudly.
"Some fucker from the Shie Hassaikai showed up and straight up killed Big Sis Mag!" Himiko started to explain.
"Wait… The Hassaikai was here? Shit…"
He bent down in front of Yuka once again, grabbing her face in between his hands to try and snap her out of her catatonic state.
"Did you catch the guy's name?" Dabi asked Toga urgently.
"Umm… I'm not sure," Himiko replied. "Kai something or…"
Dabi's eyes flashed with panic as he realized the gravity of what had just happened. He continued to try and shake Yuka from her stupor, but it was no use. She was completely unresponsive.
"FUCK!" he shouted angrily. "That was her ex, Toga!"
Toga's eyes widened at the news and her concern grew even more. She knew Yuka had been in love before. She could smell it on her when they had first met. But now that she knew that the person she had once loved was the man that had killed Magne and severed Compress' arm, it became clear to her just how much emotional anguish Yuka was in right now.
"Oh no…" she whispered. "Mia…"
She seemed completely at a loss as to what she needed to do right now. Yuka was not responding to any of their methods. The only thing that was left to do now was to wait and see if she would recover. She needed to recover, Toga thought to herself, or else she wouldn't know what to do if she lost both of her closest friends.
"We need to get her out of here…" she said to Dabi, her eyes full of tears.
"Agreed," he responded, taking Yuka into his arms once again. "I'll bring her back to my place."
"Dabi?" Himiko said, her voice growing darker as her eyes were shrouded by her blond bangs. "I don't know where the hell you were tonight, but it better have been worth it…"
She shot him a death glare as she lifted her head up to look at him once again. Dabi tried not to seem too troubled by her sudden change in mood and just left with Yuka cradled in his arms. He then started to make his way back to town, all the while, Yuka remained completely motionless. In her mind, she had completely lost herself to the emptiness. She kept replaying what had happened over and over in her mind, seeing Magne die right before her eyes again and again. She kept hoping that all of it was just a dream and that she would wake up from this waking nightmare and yet, no such relief came. Instead, the scenes just kept repeating themselves. But before she completely succumbed to the guilt, she felt something warm wash over her. This stirred her somewhat from her current state and after a few minutes, she found herself back in Dabi's apartment. He had run a warm bath for her and had taken the liberty of undressing her and lowering her into the hot water. He then sat next to the bath, holding her hand as he patiently waited for her to come around. Once he saw the light had returned to her eyes, he perked up and squeezed her hand gently as he attempted to keep her grounded in reality.
"Heyyy…" he said to her softly, leaning forward to kiss her forehead. "Can you hear me now?"
She was still unresponsive. She tried to form words inside her mind, but it came out completely blank. She kept lowering her gaze towards their hands and managed to give him a weak squeeze, which made him sigh out in relief. After a few more minutes, she finally started to move around and seemed more alert. Things were still extremely hazy, but at least she seemed to be conscious for now.
"Dabi…" she whispered very faintly.
"I'm here," he said in a reassuring tone.
"Mmh… Where… Where did you go?"
She could feel the sadness boiling up to the surface as tears started to cloud her vision once again. She tried to hold back her tears, but had no strength left to do so. She saw Dabi let out a dejected sigh, lowering his gaze as he thought about what he was going to respond.
"I was…" He hesitated. "I got held up by something."
Yuka could tell that he was being intentionally vague, as if he were trying to hide something from her. She gave him a hurt look, tears streaming down her face, then pulled her hand away from him as sadness quickly turned to anger.
"You got held up?!" she snapped back at him. "What do you mean you got held up?! Where were you while all of this was happening?! Tell me!"
"I just told you!" he answered defensively. "Something came up and-"
"STOP FUCKING LYING TO ME!" Yuka screamed, her eyes drilling straight through his skull. "You were supposed to be at the meeting! If you'd been there when all of this happened, maybe things wouldn't have turned out as bad as they did!"
Dabi seemed hurt by her comment and shot her an angry look.
"Yeah well… If it weren't for last night, maybe I would have been able to take care of personal business sooner instead of having to rest all fucking day!"
Yuka stared at him in shock. She couldn't believe what he was saying just now. It was bad enough that she felt responsible for what had happened to Magne and Compress, but to have Dabi throw everything back in her face hurt her deeply. Without saying a single word, she stood up from the hot bath water and started to climb out of the bath to start changing herself. She grabbed the clothes that Dabi had removed from her just prior and started to put her clothes back on even though she was still dripping wet.
"Baby I didn't mean-"
She cut him off by storming out of the bathroom once she was dressed. She then started collecting her things around the apartment. As she stomped around collecting her things and stuffing them into her bag, Dabi kept following her, trying to reason with her, but Yuka was having none of it.
"Babe, please," he pleaded with her. "I didn't mean it like that!"
He tried to block her as she tried to enter the bedroom, but Yuka forcefully shoved him out of her way, picking up the last of her things before storming out of the room to exit the apartment. Dabi ran after her and tried to block her passage once again, shoving her against the wall as she was preparing to leave. Seeing as she had put her mask back on, Yuka's eyes flashed red as noxious gas came pouring out of her mask, forcing Dabi to back away so that he wouldn't breathe in any of the toxic fumes.
"Yuka, please!"
Before she could hear any more of his protests, she slammed the door behind her and started to make her way out of the building. Fortunately, Dabi didn't try to follow her out of the apartment. Instead, she could hear him angrily throwing things around in his apartment. Once she was back out on the street, she started to make her way towards the nearest hotel she could find. She didn't want anything to do with anyone at the moment. All that she wanted was to be alone with herself and have no one to bother her while she processed everything that had occurred that night.
