The next day, Toga, Twice and Miasma received orders from Shigaraki to meet up at the entrance to the underground network he had been brought to by the Shie Hassaikai. There, a few of Overhaul's henchmen would be waiting to take them to their master. Toga and Twice had been the first to arrive on scene wearing their villain costumes. They were greeted by Kurono and Mimic upon their arrival and were now waiting on Yuka. A few minutes later, she finally showed up wearing something very different than what she usually wore. She had exchanged her usual baggy clothes for a finely tailored suit that she wore over a burgundy dress shirt and a tie. She had an ample brown coat draped over her shoulder, giving her a very business-like appearance. Her whole look screamed "Yakuza" and it was scary just how well it suited her.
"I'm here," her voice echoed through her mask. "Ready to go?"
She looked over at Kurono and Mimic. After staring at her for a few short seconds, they motioned for them to follow as they started to make their way underground. While they were walking through the tunnels, Yuka kept glancing over at Toga and Twice. She could tell by their expressions that they weren't exactly pleased with the current situation and that they were being a bit distant with her. She figured they were probably still upset with how things had gone down the night before. It didn't help that they probably felt betrayed since she had defended Kai during the meeting. She knew how much they were hurt by what he had done to Big Sis Mag, but she just couldn't help but feel responsible for what transpired. She had hoped they would understand, but judging by their avoidant behavior, it was pretty clear that they weren't on the best of terms at the moment. It seemed like she would have to face Overhaul all on her own for the time being.
Shigaraki had warned them that the way to Overhaul's stronghold was long, but Yuka hadn't expected there to be so many twists and turns on the way there. She had visited her fair share of Yakuza strongholds in her lifetime but never had she seen such an extensive network of tunnels leading to one of them. She figured this must have been Kai's doing. He was never one to leave things to chance when it came to security. After walking around for about thirty minutes, they came upon a hidden entrance leading into the compound and Kurono opened the way for them. Once they were inside, they came upon a long hallway leading into a reception room. The whole feel of the building felt strangely familiar to her, even though she had never set foot in it before. It just reminded her so much of the stronghold she and Kai had grown up in when they were young.
Once they were inside the reception area, they could see that Overhaul and his goons were all waiting for them to arrive. The only person she recognized, other than Overhaul himself, was Kurono, who was now standing next to his boss sitting on the couch. The rest, she had never seen before. Once they were all inside, she quietly stood next to her teammates, waiting for Overhaul to make the first move.
"Welcome," he said to them in a calm tone. "Now that you're here, why don't you start by introducing yourselves to everyone?"
Toga was the first to speak out of the three. "My name's Toga and I was told to come here… Hiya…" she said unenthusiastically.
"Long time no see, Bird Man," Twice followed up. "Be warned, I'll never forgive you…/So happy to be on the team!"
"Wonderful…" Overhaul replied in a slightly exasperated tone.
He then turned his attention over to Yuka and the air suddenly became a lot more tense.
"Shinigami," he said to her.
Yuka's eyes narrowed slightly. "Overhaul."
She tried to look tough while all eyes were on her. She hadn't been called by that name in ages. Toga and Twice seemed confused as to why he had called her by that name instead of the alias she went by with them, but she ignored their puzzled looks and focused her attention on Kai instead.
"Hand over the mask," he said sternly. "I don't trust you while you have that thing on…"
She let out a long sigh as she slowly started to undo her mask. She had already taken the liberty of putting on a cloth mask underneath in case this would happen. Once her mask was off, she placed it on the glass table in front of him, then stepped back. Though she couldn't see any of their faces, Yuka could tell that they were shocked by how cooperative she was being.
"Where's your old man?" she asked Overhaul bluntly.
Now it was his turn to squint his eyes at her, but before he could answer, one of his minions interjected.
"We'll be asking the questions here, snake," a man spoke from behind him.
He dressed entirely in black, with a cloak wrapped around his body and a wide brim hat accentuated by a black plague doctor's mask. In fact, all of Overhaul's men were wearing some kind of mask, most of them being similar to his. Yuka looked up at the man who had just spoken to her, her expression barely changing as she squinted her eyes at him from across the room. She then heard Overhaul let out a slight sigh.
"Calm yourself, Nemoto," he ordered calmly, before turning his attention back to her. "He's fallen ill. I've assumed control of the Hassaikai in his absence…"
She was shocked to hear that his father had taken ill while she was away. She figured that he would have done something to help him recover, but it seemed that even his quirk had its limits.
"I'm sorry to hear that," she spoke genuinely, lowering her gaze for just a moment. "I presume you've already spoken about me to your fellow comrades?"
"Indeed. They already know who you are…" Chisaki replied in a low tone.
"This is perfect!" one of the larger men spoke behind him. "The infamous League of Villains… Let's brawl!"
"I'll kill you!" Twice threatened.
"Yeaaah, no thanks…" Himiko said in a disinterested tone.
Yuka didn't even grace him with a response. He looked like the type who went around picking fights with anyone who looked strong enough. She couldn't fathom why Kai would choose to keep someone like him around, but then again, there was much that had changed since they had last met.
"I'm sorry about your friend," he spoke to the group. "It's unfortunate. I didn't want to kill him…"
"You mean her…" Twice corrected.
"Don't make that mistake again…" Himiko threatened, her eyes darkening with anger.
Yuka exhaled harshly as she closed her eyes slowly. While it also rubbed her the wrong way that he had misgendered her friend, tensions were running high as it is and Yuka was worried that Himiko or Twice would do something rash if they continued on like this.
After a few seconds of awkward silence, Overhaul spoke again. "... Anyway, this is no time to be holding grudges against each other. We're on the same team now. I want your help with my plan."
He had been staring at Toga and Twice the whole time that he spoke. He seemed genuine in his words, but Yuka had a creeping suspicion that his goodwill only extended to her two comrades…
"Bastard…" Twice seethed. "You tried to play it cool the first time we met! Like you don't care about anything!/… So, what are my orders?"
Yuka exhaled once again. "Sorry about him," she apologized to the rest of them. "He's a bit off his rocker."
She heard Overhaul exhale as well. "Just follow my instructions like everyone else in the organization. But first things first… I want the details of your quirks. It'll be easier for us to work together if I fully understand what you can do."
"I think I'll tell you about my powers when you need to know about them," Toga replied snidely. "Oh and just so we're clear… I still don't like you people."
"So much for making a good impression," Mimic growled. "Don't underestimate the YAKUZA, girl!"
"Toga, behave," Yuka scolded her. "We're not here to cause trouble…"
She felt Toga's gaze turn towards her as she shot her the nastiest look she could muster. Yuka didn't look back at her when she did.
"I agree with Toga," Twice answered. "We'll tell you when we feel like it. You won't get nothing out of me! No way! My lips are sealed!"
Yuka placed her hand to her forehead, shaking her head. They were being needlessly antagonistic and she had a feeling their blatant disrespect was going to get them into trouble soon enough. As she was thinking about this, the man with the wide brim hat spoke once again.
"What is your quirk?"
There was something different about his voice. It seemed to resonate despite there being no echo in the room. Yuka stared at him intently, waiting to see what would happen. A few seconds later, Twice suddenly started blabbering about the ins and outs of his quirks, explaining to them how it functioned in great detail. His two female comrades looked at him in shock as words kept pouring out of his mouth. Once he was done with his speech, he froze. It took him a few seconds to realize what had just happened.
"Huh?! What happened?! It's like I couldn't stop the words from coming!" he exclaimed.
"Wooww that was pretty stupid…" Toga said in a very unimpressed tone.
"It wasn't me, Toga, I swear!"
"And you?" Nemoto asked Toga next, his voice reverberating once more.
The same thing happened to her as well. It was like she was compelled to speak even though she didn't want to. Once she had finished explaining how her quirk worked to Overhaul and his men, she stared blankly at the group in front of her, then turned towards Twice with an embarrassed look on her face.
"See?" he said as she turned to look at him.
Yuka's eyes narrowed as she saw Nemoto turn his gaze towards her. Kai was already very well acquainted with the ins and outs of her quirk, so there was no need for her to speak about it now, and yet she was still subjected to the same treatment as her two comrades. She tried to fight it at first, but it was no use. As soon as Nemoto asked his question, she felt compelled to tell them everything there was to know about her quirk, including the drawbacks and its limitations. Once she was finished, she shot a nasty look at Nemoto, before looking back towards Overhaul.
"You know I could have told you all of that willingly!" she complained, feeling like her pride had been pointlessly bruised by his overzealous lackey.
Overhaul shrugged. "Can't be too careful…"
It was clear he had let this happen in order to embarrass her in front of his men. This frustrated her to no end, but it was to be expected. She and him were not on the best of terms after all and she could sense a lot of animosity coming from him. Not wanting to make a bigger fool out of herself, she bit her tongue and waited to see what he would do next.
"One more thing…" Nemoto spoke using his quirk. "Did Shigaraki say anything about betraying us?"
There was no point in trying to resist his quirk, so she let herself answer truthfully along with her two colleagues. All three of them answered "no", which seemed to surprise Overhaul, but also put him at ease. Once their interrogation was done, he slowly rose up from his seat.
"Okay then… I'll accept you two as members of the Hassaikai now," he spoke to Toga and Twice. "But wanted criminals like you should stay out of sight. Unless I say otherwise, don't leave the underground facility."
"House arrest?!" Twice interjected loudly.
"Awww that sounds super lame!" Himiko complained.
"Once I trust you a little more, you can do what you want," Overhaul continued. "But you'll have to prove yourselves… Chrono, Mimic. Show our two guests to their chambers. I have some unfinished business to take care of with Miss Sakurazuka. The rest of you, wait for my command. I wish to be left alone with her…"
She suddenly felt a knot in her stomach as her two companions were led out of the reception area. They both flashed one last look in her direction before being escorted out of the room by Overhaul's henchmen. The air got infinitely more heavy as Overhaul slowly walked over towards the door, making sure that it was secure before letting out a long-winded sigh.
She had spent the entire morning rehearsing what she would say to him once she was brought over to him. She had been hyping herself up on her way to the compound, but now that she was finally standing in front of him, it was like all of her bolstering from before suddenly fell short. She felt her self-confidence rapidly decline as he turned to stare at her with intense eyes. There was something oppressive in the way he didn't speak a word to her. As the seconds ticked by, she felt herself growing more and more agitated, to the point where she couldn't stand the crushing silence anymore and finally spoke first.
"I know what it looks like," she blurted out. "But I swear, it's not what you think…"
He gave her a sardonic laugh. "Oh really? Then, please, enlighten me. I'm curious to see what kind of excuse you're going to conjure up to explain the fact that you were DEAD for the past 7 years…"
His words cut her like a razor. While she hadn't specifically left to get away from him, the reality was that she had still left him behind when she fled the Shie Hassaikai. Even though he had his back turned to her, she could tell from the way his shoulders were shaking that he was desperately trying to control his temper.
"You've got to understand, Kai-" she started to speak.
"It's Overhaul now," he cut her off abruptly. "And I think I understand just fine. You intentionally went after your father while he was out on his mission and pretended to have died alongside him in order to escape me…"
"That's not why I-"
"Is it not?!" he yelled, pivoting towards her as his citrine irises shot icy daggers at her from across the room. "Because from where I'm standing, Yuka, it seems as though you'd rather be dead than be with me!"
"That's not true!" she retorted. "It was never my intention to hurt-"
She was interrupted by him suddenly moving in on her, grabbing her by the neck as he pushed her against the wall behind her. While she was busy trying to explain herself to him, she had failed to see that he had removed one of his gloves and was now holding her by the neck with his uncovered hand. This spiked her heart rate even more as she stared frightened at his enraged face mere inches away from hers.
"Don't you dare give me that excuse!" he bellowed, squeezing her neck slightly while he breathed heavily behind his mask. "You deliberately went against my father's orders by going after your father and you pretended to have died just so, what? You could run away from everything we had built together?!"
He continued to tighten his grip around her neck, slowly blocking off her air supply as she struggled to breathe. If it wasn't for the fact that he could instantly annihilate her with his quirk, she would have fought back against him, but now that his hand was tightly wrapped around her neck, she couldn't say or do anything without risking her life in the process.
"I fucking mourned you, Yuka!" he continued. "We held a god damn funeral for you! And you have the nerve to come here and tell me that you didn't do this to hurt me?! If that's the case then why? Why did you leave?! …TELL ME!"
Despite him wanting her to answer, he was not leaving her much room to talk. After slightly wiggling her way out of Overhaul's grasp, she finally found enough room to breathe and inhaled deeply before yelling out:
"BECAUSE I WAS WEAK!"
She started panting as she fought to get some air. She could still feel Kai's hand around her neck, but at least now she could manage a few strained breaths. She stared directly into his eyes, feeling her emotions slowly starting to take a hold of her. It hurt her to no end to see him in so much pain because of her. She had never wanted for him to suffer and yet there would have been no other possible outcome. She had left him at the very moment they were supposed to pledge themselves to each other and she had spent the last 7 years trying to bury the past because of how ashamed she felt every time his face would pop into her mind. She had fought against the pain every single day, trying to smother the guilt she felt over having to leave the one person she had ever loved all because she couldn't stand having him see how weak she had been after the loss of her father.
"When I went to see my father, I knew something bad had happened," she started to explain. "But what I found was so far from what I had expected that it completely broke me…" She could feel herself breaking down in front of him, tears filling up her eyes. "The thought of having to face everyone, of having to face you, was so unbearable, because all I could think about was how everything reminded me of him and all he had given me… but I know now that it was my own selfish weakness that pushed me away from you… So go on, do what you want with me. I deserve whatever punishment you have in store for me."
She knew there had to be a reason he had specifically asked for her during their negotiations. Whether it was so he could punish her or have her killed, she wanted to get it over with. She closed her eyes in anticipation as she braced herself for what was about to come. To her surprise, she felt his grip loosen as he leaned in closer to her.
"You're lucky you are of some use to me…" he growled angrily. "Or else I might have killed you just now."
He released her neck abruptly, shoving her against the wall. The impact left her off balance and she immediately fell to the ground. She looked up in shock as he proceeded to put his glove back on. As she looked down, she noticed how his arm was completely devoid of hives despite him having touched her directly. He proceeded to roll down his sleeve as he approached the coffee table, then retrieved the mask she had left there and started to make his way over to the door.
"I'll have my men come and fetch you," he declared in a calm voice. "You'll be confined to a room until I find a use for you. In the meantime, I'll be keeping this." He lifted the mask in his hand. "I'll consider giving it back to you if you behave…"
He then opened the door and stepped out of the room, all the while he kept his back to her and didn't look back even once. Once he was gone, Yuka completely broke down. She started crying, leaning forward as she held herself in her arms, huddled up against the wall. She had expected things to go poorly, yet she couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by what had just happened. She had been so scared of dying at that moment that she couldn't help but cry. It could have been all over in an instant and yet, he had spared her. Whether that was a good thing or a bad thing, Yuka couldn't tell. The only thing she could feel at that moment was relief, even though her troubles were far, far from over.
A few moments later, Kurono came by to fetch her from the reception area. She had somehow managed to compose herself by the time he came and he motioned for her to follow him. He then brought her to where she would be sleeping for the night. Once she was settled into her room, he closed the door behind him. She could hear him talking to someone just outside her door. She figured he was probably relaying Overhaul's orders to the people that would be guarding her room for the foreseeable future. While this situation was far from ideal, she couldn't help but feel grateful for the fact that she was still alive, even though things were going to be far from easy in the coming days. For now, she would try and garner some semblance of goodwill with Overhaul. She needed to prove to him that she was still the same capable person she was before she had left. Then, and only then, could she hope to redeem herself from the mistakes she made and the pain she caused.
